I successfully on the 1st try made my very first silver ring using a torch for the very first time yesterday. So glad I found this! I honestly hate having to switch the compound AND the attachments. You have to keep track of what goes with what.
I prefer to just use a "neutral" compound and change the grit or style of the attachments . Was unsure about fabuluster but after watching this I'm 100% buying a bar

I think it's everyone's least favorite step, but necessary. Randy mentions that rouge can make a red mess. Years ago before I knew or cared about the dust, I never used a dust mask. Oops. I also used a very dark dark purple rouge. I did switch to ZAM, but not because of the dust. OMG! What a mess. Had to scrub down the walls and paint with a special covering paint. I hope by now I've got all that out of my lungs. ;-)

Use 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove the red rouge film on things. It works on wood, plastic, metal. Loved the video. Thank you

I got the table Abbot polishing machine from UK ! And box , tape the hoover handle to side left or right side the box has filter in back and cut outs !

Just make sure you're not wearing a scarf or any clothing (loose sleeves) , bracelets,etc that could end up getting caught in your foredom ! I learned that the hard way & believe me, it wasn't fun...🙃

Hi, What Grits would you recommend for polishing stainless with minor to moderate scratches? I'm looking to clean up some old zippo lighters. I've tried with a white felt pad with red polishing compound that you get with the Dremel kit but it's struggling with the deeper scratches. Thank you :)

Thanks and you can polish etched metals like this but you need to make sure you have a deep etch. You might want to just skip to the polishing pad with the polishing compound. You are going to have to test and see if you are going to polish your etched design off or not.

Great video! I want to use my 421 compound with my dremel to polish, my question is that if the compound will wear out the gold ?
The compound that I have will take away little bits of gold in order to smooth it out.

Thanks! It's counterintuitive, but too much compound drastically affects the final finish. I wasn't getting a good shine until I watched your video and you covered what too much looks like, haha. Using some new wheels and applying less worked perfectly.
You can get it off using simple green (the cleaner) with a toothbrush or an ultrasonic cleaner.
So which one works better the dremel or the flex shaft?
How to avoid haze? I use red rouge in stainless steel watch cases but can’t avoid haze on the case back. Thanks! Happy New Year!
You might want to try some different polishing compound. I don't use stainless steel but it know it is a lot harder than copper, brass, silver and gold.
I have a question. I want to know of if I can polish my silver since I want to make it shiny. What tools would I need to make it happen? And any tips?

It has been several months since you have done this video, so you may not even see my comment. But. . . I just found your channel yesterday, and I LOVE your teaching style! Very clear and easy to understand. I have a question. I am new to all of this, and polishing has been difficult for me - this helped immensely! However, I just purchased a rotary tumbler - at what stage would you use this? In place of the ultrasonic cleaner? THANKS!
Haha, I see all the comments 😁👍 and thank you for your kind words. As for your question, I need to know what you are using in your tumbler and seeing that I use steel shot in mine and I still use the ultrasonic to make sure all of the polish is gone.

If I have something with a lot of details and I wanted all of it polished I will use the tumbler. It wall also hardest your work so that is very helpful after your are done soldering. I don't used the tumbler very much and do most of my polishing with my polishing wheels.
Any chance you could do one of these except in silver? And go from where that white powder fine silver coat is still covering the ring (or anything silver)? I’m having a hard time getting it all the way to mirror finish.

Bought some of the rubber discs exactly like yours - Is it really black, white, green. brown (as your little box lid shows) - coarsest to fine - because it seems more like black brown green white when I have just tried them?

So you mean what polishing compound would I use for silver and gold? If so you can look for some items like these. amzn.to/2NayDEJ They have different grits and can be used on silver and gold. Here are the specs that they give:
COLOR: ROUGE/RED - The brightest shine for yellow gold. Also produces a brilliant shine on silver.COLOR: BLANC/WHITE - Bright polishing of silver.COLOR: VERT/ GREEN - Recommended for bright polishing of hard alloys such as platinum, white gold, chrome, chrome cobalt and stainless steel.COLOR: YELLOW - Used for Brass copper and bronze.COLOR: BLUE - All-purpose compound for all types of metal
As for your price question, I don't understand what you are asking. Also seeing that you in belgium you are going to have to search for similar items to the ones that I linked to on Amazon. I know there are lots of places that sell these compounds.

Somewhere I saw that the bristle wheels require using 2 or more wheels on a spindle. Is that true?
Required? Well no that is not required but it does cover more area if you have 2 on it

Aside from a response below concerning freely shaping your polishing felt wheels, there was something else I wanted to tell you about. I noticed that you dont have a lathe. Lathes are typically large and expensive, so nothing against you for not having one. You do, however, have electric drills.
Simply create your own attachment for the drill to act as a lathe, and you can very quickly simplify your ring polishing process. You can even get polishing pads and put them in the drill chuck, so that you can use your clamp or other holding tools while your drill does the work. Simply clamp the drill down to the work surface and you will be set.
As for the ring lathe attachment, why buy one? You can easily make one. Drill a 1/4 inch hole into one end of a hardwood dowel section (you can buy 1 inch ash or maple dowel rods in lowest or home depot) and insert a 1/4 inch piece of aluminum or brass rod stock. You want metal for a reliable center. Rough up the end going into the wood dowel and epoxy or ca glue in place. Chuck it in the drill and while it is spinning, use rough sandpaper or ramps and files to work it into a tapered cone similar to your ring mandrel. You can then jamb a ring on the mandrel and turn it on your makeshift lathe to quickly and easily polish your rings.
Well,vi do have a lathe now but this information would be great for the people that don't have one. When I get to my computer I will pin this to the top comment. 😄👍

Does lacquer also protect the skin from copper/brass/nickel staining?

How frequently do you replace the felt pads? I just followed your instructions to clean a white gold ring using white rouge. It came out looking really nice, however I can only do about a quarter of the ring before the felt pad turns completely black. Cleaning on wood helps a little bit but not much. So am I supposed to use 4 felt pads per ring or just keep going with the same one even if it looks filthy?
Keep using that some one, you can just reload it with more polishing compound. It turning black is normal. 😁👍
Oh and I stop using the pad when it's too small or will not stay on my bit
If you're going to patina, would you still polish and buff as much as this video shows?
Yes and no. So you can get away with just clean up your work before adding the patina. But you can polish off all the high spots and it should come out looking good 😁👍
Hi I have a question... I’m using a dremel rotary and flex shaft. I would love to buy a foreman. Since I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis I think that a foreman would really be beneficial to me, especially with all the accessory attachments. I set a lot of stones in .999 bezel, cooper, etc... I do everything by hand. The generic push pedal that’s cheaper... does the foreman accessories fit into the cheaper generic rotary tool that you mentioned in the different links? Please get back to me when you can and I really appreciate everything that you do for us on UA-cam...I’ve learned so much from you... also if you are planning to sell some older tools I would be very interested in possibly buying them... let me know and we can go from there... thank you, Michelle

Yes I do and no it's not the proper way to do it for the best polish but it works 95% of the time. 😅👍

A (probably dumb) question I have is, why do you have to start on a lower grit and constantly move up before polishing? isn't it possible to apply the polishing compound right away?
Think of the polishing compound as just a very high grit so you could just us it but to would take a very long time to get everything all polished up. Using lower grits can take off deeper scratches much faster and you just work your way up.

I’m a beginner metalsmith, and recently I tried using a polishing compound. The compound was super dry and flew all over the place when I tried loading it up on the pad. Do you know if there is a way to avoid making such a mess? Thanks!
Polishing is messy, you man make a small enclosure to you can contain the mess a little better
Maggie Friedrichs I had this issue . I melted mine using a heat gun and then tried it but someone also suggested heating it and mixing it with mineral oil.

I think it will work all all of those, It might be a little hard on the stainless steel but you can give it a try. 😀
I always wonder though how to polish in hard to reach places? I cant find this information anywhere, sometimes the disc cant reach in small places. Whats the best way to go about this? For example I cant reach inside a bezel, nothing is small enough to get in certain areas.
You can use a tumbling machine with some stainless steel shot to get into all the hard to get to spots.
Something the original poster left out concerning those felt polishing wheels... feel free to reshape them into whatever contours you need. Simply put a new or even a used one on the dremel or flex shaft and run it against some coarse sandpaper to change its shape. Need a fine point? Make a fine point.

I got flaws all over my rings. I don't care. Just adds character. I electroform so roughness is part of the deal. I could clean it up but I really really hate polishing so I just do enough to make it shiny. Hey, any chance you can send me a rolling mill? And while you're at it a rock saw and cab machine would be nice too.
Yeah I don't like polishing but a lot of people do and it does looks nice on some pieces. 😀👍
