ah yes the SH-101, short for "SH I'm playing with my 101"
I love the SH-101. It's not just the iconic sound of this machine but the user interface. In my opinion it is possibly the best designed monosynth for performance. I've had it for years and I still find new tricks, easter eggs and ways to use it while jamming. Its a funky lil bastard
ps: trigger the sequencer with a drum machine. just do it. its so much fun.
The rim shot from my Tr-8 works with some gain and the beauty is you can then use the very visual 16 step xox sequencer to choose where in the bar you want the notes to fire. You can also quickly switch from 16ths to 8ths, polyrythms, etc, etc. Hours of fun
@@CloudTwo1 👍
For anyone wondering the TAL -Bassline 101 is a pretty good plugin emulation of this synth. For $60 it’s pretty damn good
Such a lovely machine. Sh-101 has such an iconic sound. Simple design but powerful. Can’t wait to see what else you do with it.
In the process of acquiring one of these...wicked video as usual Ned! Always appreciate how deep you go into hardware. Great stuff.
First i misread the topic and was like nice! Ed Rush from virus recordings are going to show some sh-101 tricks. Then i realized it was Ned Rush and still was amazed about the quality content ✌️🔥🔥 great !
Such a machine my ms-101 is very close so much fun with pedals, the sub bass from it wow beats any soft synth thanks ned your cool 👌
💯🎹🎶
One of my favourite synths …thanks Ned!
Glad to see you back!
At one point I had three 😬. I still have two and they both are in need of some service. But my favorite track that used 101’s was 808 States Newbuild. Still a total banger of a record! Slave them cvs to a 303 and it’s magic!!
What a great video 😊 entertining and educational 👍
So just got my new S-1 out and created some cool acid bass noises thanks to following your example! Thanks dude! 😊👍
9:52 _Quest for the Snare_ = Comedy Gold! 🌩
Waiting for part2 Ned. Thanks
I can't even express how nostalgic your story made me lol.
Haha I love your passion 😊👍❤️ you are absolutely right in everything you say 😊😊👍
I had one years ago..i am about to buy one at a ridiculous price but well worth it. . i am well excited . I sold my behringers to get one. LMAO. yours sounds sweet m8
Well this was fun! I did what you did and bought one after a beer or three (or five). It always held mythical status in my mind and it's one of the only synths I've bought that fully holds up to that notion. I got the SH-01A first which wet the whistle, so to speak. But in the end I couldn't resist the desire for the OG. And it is a lot more fun to play with, I have to say.
Re: External clock, any loud enough audio spike will drive it. I used to use a factory 808 kick with a very very short envelope from my Ensoniq TS-12 to drive the clock input. Doesn't have to be DC-coupled gubbins, just a loud enough level. The 808 click + very short envelope cutting the sub down super short seems to give enough oomph to trigger the clock. Gazing lovingly at both in my studio now... the 101 was the first synth I ever bought in 1985 and I will never ever sell it. First manufactured in '82, BTW. Thanks for the great video!
I'm new to synths, would the audio-triggered clocking be able to control both the arp speed and sequencer speed?
@@bananermat3798 Yes, that’s exactly what I used it for.
@@NgaTaeOfficial Sweet! Gives me some ideas for live setups :) Thanks.
Great video thanks. One of my dream synths as well. Always sounds great.
Had one years ago, paid £30 in a good old second hand shop in Chorley Lancs.. lent it out to help a guy out with a gig
& received a broken one back !
Sent it to London for repair.. never saw it again..still don’t know what happened to it 😞
Enjoyed your delving.. sound great through FX.
Tragic!
Top tier synth.
Great NED Rush Review Style for a nice machine !! ;)
I had a 101 as well...it went up in flames at a gig...not because the gig I played was particularly good...I wasn't "on fire" or anything...the only thing that was on fire was the 101...like literally...well, it wasn't really burning per se...there was just smoke coming out it...101, I miss you😢🙈
I wonder if you could get these sounds with all the low end out of a MS-1. Great instrument with a well deserved cult status.
I didn’t know noise from a synth could sound so good
At 24:47 jeesus christ you get a really awesome nasty sound evolving ❤️
Nice work, boss!
"We all like a present nipple." - Ned Rush
damn ned, I've been waiting forever for new content :)
13:46-13:47 Robert Hood - Ride
I'm watching this in memory of the Christmas Party special broadcast that deleted itself :(
I don’t know what party you speak of.
Fart 2 D2 😂 This thing sounds so good, would love to pick another one up. SH01A is good, but the OG can't be beat
10:04 you got the snare
cool !!!
The two girls that held down the bass chair in my 8th grade jazz band back in the 80's used one of these. They never sounded as cool as this, tho.
had one for 30-odd years which i got for free, but it never quite worked properly so i never really played with it. I finally got it repaired this year and it's awesome, although i still don't really know what i'm doing. Videos like this are invaluable. did you ever get round to doing part 2?
No but I happily would cause I love it. I’m still learning the sequencer which is so charmingly obtuse and yet it reveals some much awesomeness.
You're a sick guy Ned. I almost bought a cz101 whilst inebriated around the same mostly just to make the sleng teng bass irl. Luckily common sense prevailed eventually 🙃
You talking about the Casio one?
@@CleverMetaphor yea man
@@bunningtonhevy ha yeah I thought that was it. I got the small one from a used guitar shop like 10 years ago. It was already in bad shape so it didn't last long but it was fun. It sounded more like a toy tbh, but I mostly got it for the sake of having it.
@@CleverMetaphor Oh nice, glad you had some fun with it bro. Yeah it is almost a novelty purchase, thats why i didnt end up getting it. They are a few hundred on ebay these days, and theres way better things you could buy really. I really love that 80s digital reggae sound though and its on loads of those records so it seemed like it would be cool to have. They look hard asf to program though too, how did u find it?
@@bunningtonhevy lol yes man it was so weird programming but after a few days you get used to it, and it's just like using a VCR or any other old tech. It's just learning how to navigate the menu quickly. And you could really get some cool sounds out of it too. I could definitely see it being used for some reggae sounds now that you mention it. $300 though, that's over 3x what I got it for so yeah, not worth it at all.
Hey Ned, I really love your videos. Do you think you would ever make a video on making sounds like Doon Kanda on Ableton?
Blawan high hat gave me laughter haha
Hi Ned, I love your channel! Is it still possible to join on Discord?
Oh… I actually did get drunk last night and bought a Roland S1
Thanks Ned, now I need one of these. Ffs
Beautiful!!!
How are you connecting this to Ableton? CV to Midi converter?
In this video, I am not. But when I plan to do so, I’ll either use the Novation SL Mk3 which has a built midi to cv converter, or I’ll use the Disting mk4 with the midi interface addon.
new band name.. suspicious stain
Ford Capri!!!!
10:05 snare
Blawan hi hat also cud b snare
What u actually looking for in terms of snare? What’s wrong with any ol burst of noise?
I guess it depends on the context.
@@NedRush fair beans
Next time jam like Ed Rush.
No
can you start spending more money on hardware? Please. Thank you.
