I feel so bad for the murdered members of the Rose family, what are horrible way to die! I feel especially bad for the mother, she had recovered from the initial poisoning, only to be poisoned again! The mother's love was so strong for Ceely because , even though she knew her daughter killed her whole family, she still left her half of the money to Ceely. RIP Rose family...

I think it's because you're serious but don't depress me but also don't like mess around to where the real murder doesn't feel important. So happy to see this talked about. I live close to Malabar farm and go constantly. When I was about 11-12 I was on a tour of the upstairs of the ceely rose house with my mom. I thought she was behind me when I was leaving a room and I felt a hard tug on my pony tail. I turned around to tell her to stop and I saw I was alone. I immediately screamed for my mom and told her I felt something and we left the tour early. It really effected me at the time, I haven’t been upstairs since. I think you might not be allowed up there anymore. Thanks for talking about this story! I learned a lot of details I haven’t seen at the park.

What a disturbing story. My own family member is a special needs adult, with a similar intellect of about a first grader. She had a "boyfriend " and they were to be married in twenty years (ofc that didn't happen). He was also special needs, though. She can't be left unsupervised, and she doesn’t form friendships but is close to family members. She is very sweet tempered, but can get very stubborn and secretive. I could really understand a lot of the behaviors described in this story.

Me too! I work with special needs children, and this community let this baby girl down and IMO reaped what they sewed. IDK I felt a little frustrated hearing about this. I do believe justice was served, but my goodness she had more people around her treating her awful than people that really cared about her. She was learning hate not love. 🤦🏼‍♀️

@piper_lori-williams-tudhope I worked with one particular person who's brother would hit her. I found out when she couldn't pick out a cookie because her glasses were broken. At 15, this made livid and I went to the owner of the day facility and she told me nothing could be done. I wanted to take justice into my own hands with a light threat but that wouldn't have done any good and back then I didn't have other options. Anyway the woman was always kind and cheerful even with this caretaker brother. I'm not excusing her family because I am a " normie" lost my temper, but she did not. Even though she saw through experience that violence gets results she did not result to such measures

I wonder if the author Shirley Jackson knew about the case of Ceeley Rose because her book We Have Always Lived In the Castle is about a young seemingly childlike girl who poisoned her family. The book is haunting in the way that the murders at Malabar Farm is haunting.

Louis Bromfield wrote about this in his book "Pleasant Valley" in 1939. He bought that farm after returning to the area after fleeing France before Nazi invasion. The house is part of Malabar Farm State Park. Lots of scenes from The Shawshank Redemption were filmed there or nearby. Beautiful area. Humphrey Bogart married Lauren Bacall in The Big House. Great place to visit. Ohio Amish country (Holmes County) nearby.

Honestly, I do think it likely that Ceely with her genetic issues was the biological child of David and Rebecca. With the decline of genetic material both from the age of her mother and health problems of her father, it makes sense. I know several women who were born with genetic abnormalities after their father was exposed to chemical warfare during the Gulf War. They had older and younger siblings who were all healthy though.

Could be or could be through interbreeding. I don’t find the age gap unusual though as my grandmother had two babies after a big gap. She was so sexually uneducated that she thought you couldn’t get pregnant after 40. This was in the 1950s.

@@jturtle5318 I don't believe so, but in the video it was mentioned that the father had health problems after the war. The conditions that most of the soldiers were in was less than ideal. Besides the stress of war and battles, most of them barely had enough to eat, what they did eat was not nutritious and they nearly all struggled with malaria, dysentery, or other illnesses. Plus they were exposed to the elements all year. If he experienced 4 yrs of that, it would definitely take a toll on his body!

I believe that when something happens somewhere and emotions are running high, that energy is absorbed into the space where the event occured, and under the right circumstances, that stored energy can manifest itself in a way that is visible to human eyes.
When I was six, my parents had bought this old Victorian house and evidently, a murder had taken place in the 50s in the alley between our house and the neighbors. One of my bedroom windows faced the alley. To my recollection, I did not hear about this story until I was much older and we had already moved out, but what I do remember was a recurring nightmare I had about looking out that window and seeing blonde girl in a green prom dress looking up at me from that alley. It was absolutely terrifying.

I went to Malabar farm on a field trip in grade school. It was the site and test farm for a visionary agricultural experimenter named Lewis Bromfield. He is credited with creating methods like plowing around a hill to prevent run off instead of up and down it like was customary, which basically covered the entire hill with a series of small ditches waiting to wash out. I haven't thought about that field trip and that farm for probably over 40 years, I'm astounded I recognized the name right off.
BTW, they never mentioned anything about the murders when we were there.

@@CBrown86I think you missed the point of her comment, which wasn't to to condone or take away blame & guilt, but to say that she could see how her 🧠 might have been warped over time. Most ppl w\ issues like those aren't bad or Evil. But if sane, "normal" (not normal necessarily but society's view of what normal is.), & rational ppl who suffer from no mental issues can be twisted into something else capable of cruel behavior, then why would it be beyond the realm of possible that somebody struggling w\mental health issues wouldn't be? Again, she wasn't giving her an excuse or saying that it was okay, just that she could see how after 20+y of ill treatment, being ostracized by her community, & possibly suffering from rough anger temperaments in her home as well might turn down this path bc the way that she thinks & views those around her has been shaped by the way she's treated. Who really knows if it could've been different. Bc everyone is different. But maybe just maybe had she been better cared for & a part of the community, she might not have went down this dark path. Or perhaps either way you split it, she would've given the ultimate situation that led to this. Honestly, it makes me feel bad for Guy Berry who was only trying to be kind. I'm sure learning that she committed these AWFUL crimes just out of some misguided belief that they would be together, & also tried to murder his family in such a cruel way as well, would've been something that weighed heavily on his mind for the remainder of his life. & Likely in that community he had that stain follow him as well bc those same cruel ppl would like to taunt him again & again. Which could ultimately have made him desire to not be in that situation again & change him from being kind.

She showed premeditation, was astute enough to conceal the arsenic, saw the results of her actions in real-time, and still attempted to murder again. She said the devil made her do it, which should be sufficient to acknowledge that she can differentiate between right and wrong. Would they would have accepted an insanity plea in today's courts?

If the assessment of her as having the intellectual development of a six-year-old is correct, she would know that doing certain things was considered "bad" & therefore should be concealed, but still wouldn't have a real understanding of the permanence of death. I know the US is obsessed with punishment, but most countries wouldn't even consider a six-year-old child, or an adult at that level, capable of criminality.

If expert witnesses testified that her mental age was below the age of criminal liability she could potentially be found not guilty, but she would still be put into some kind of secured psychiatric facility because she's obviously dangerous. Even though by today's standards a 16 year old is clearly just wrong on so many levels to be with someone in their 20's, back then older men got with younger woman all the time so I almost don't see what would have been too wrong with a slightly older woman to get with a younger man back then, especially if possibly she could have also found a man like her with some clear developmental delays. Maybe it was more frowned upon for the older one to be the woman. In today's society I would say she had some developmental delays that weren't properly attended to as a child so she never developed out of them and her delays continued into adulthood. She also may have socially and developmentally fallen somewhere on the autism spectrum. It makes me sad that, just as you said, it must have been very jarring and clearly disrupted her routine a great deal when at 20 she stopped going to school. I wish the teacher would have kept her on as some kind of assistant and maybe she could have been trained to help with the younger children. Imagine the positivity something like that would have brought to her life instead of now being so sheltered and just hanging around the house swooning over boys.

This makes me feel bad & wonder about Guy Berry's life after this. Obviously what happened was very awful & tragic! But having all this come out & be sensationalized meant that ppl all over knew the details. So, more than likely he did too. He knew she had committed these HEINOUS acts out of some misguided notion of being w\him. Not only that, but she also tried to murder his family in this SAME cruel & devastating way. There he was just trying to be kind to someone who had been treated badly & it blew up. Now, very clearly this was NOT HIS FAULT! But rather her's & the way she had been dealt w\her entire life, as well as how this particular situation was handled. But Im sure he carried this w\him for his life & was likely never allowed to forget it by those cruel ppl in their community. Hopefully, this didn't serve as a poison to his soul & turn him bitter or stomp out the kindness he'd had in him.
Fascinating story though! I'd never heard of it!

My father grew up in an impoverished area. There was a family in the area who had a son who was mentally retarded.
The family lived him and raised him well, as best they could.
But, when he reached puberty, he started raping his sisters, cousins, neighbors... There eas no controlling him.
After exhausting all other options, the family poisoned him. It was never spoken of by anyone in the community. I feel so deeply for all involved.
