    I didn't have a dad growing up and I remember watching John Wayne movies like 'True Grit'. I was always a huge fan and kind of thought of him as to what my dad might have been like. Over the years throughout my childhood, I guess, my heart sort of 'borrowed' him as a 'dad figure'. I hope his children will forgive me for borrowing their dad! I loved him too! What can I say!

      @monav...
      I honestly believe that John Wayne's kids would be honored that you thought of their dad as you did. I think they're just as kind, friendly & down to earth as John Wayne was. I was fortunate enough to have met him twice & he was every bit the perfect gentleman his fans would hope he'd be. In the 70's I worked at LAX 5:00am to 1:00pm. One day I was asked to work a half hour over which was no problem, but that half hour led into 4 hours over. It was 5:00pm & I had to be back at 5:00 in the morning so I told my supervisor I don't care if you have to run the register but I'm leaving, which was perfect timing. When walking through the tunnel to the street I saw a bigger than life figure walking towards me & I thought no way. I thought the Duke probably had a private plane but as he got closer I couldn't believe it was him. Too embarrassed to say anything cause an airline guy I knew was near so I kept walking. I realized this was a once in a lifetime experience so I turned around, caught up to him & his entourage & said "excuse me Mr. Wayne", everyone stopped & John Wayne said "yes little lady may I help you?" I told him I have pictures of him & would like to know if I could send them to him to be autographed. He handed me an autograph card & his business card where I could mail them to him which I did. You may have already heard or read some or all of these stories, but in case you haven't, Google childhood memories of John Wayne's adult children. They tell of things they did as children & they're cute . I love the one about taking his daughter golfing. I don't rember if it was Michael or Patrick but one of them said to the sister who went golfing with Duke. He said " thanks we've been wanting to belt him one for a long time." The Ireland story is cute also.

      The house i grew up in , located in Thornton, Colorado area was
      One of seven show homes. John
      Wayne's manager was contacted by the developer of this housing project and asked to make an appearance for the Grand opening. He agreed and spent
      Several hours there walking through the houses and signing
      Autographs. We didn't get a picture of this event but , it happened in 1955. So not only did Wayne walk through my home but the man passed away on my 20th birthday too! That
      Was a bummer and a little weird!

He was a good role motto on screen and evidently off screen too. He raised good upright citizens! It is sad that we can’t say that regarding those in that business and in many other people that we have left to pattern our futures after, past leaders of our nation etc. This is just observations of an old 84 yr. Very funny, not one of the Hollywood sad-stories about the kids of famous celebs, he had a great relationship with his father and loves talking about him. I think practically every single actor or actress from that era were brainwashed that smoking was the in thing to do!

    John had a home built in El Encinar de los Reyes outside of Madrid. The front facade was in the shape of a stagecoach, for obvious reasons. We lived in the off-base housing for Torrejon AB in the same general neighborhood, separate from the more expensive homes but there nonetheless. Pretty expensive neighborhood for AF base housing but distance to the base was close and to Madrid even closer, but without the Metro system. Saw the home once or twice from the outside...impressive. Been to the home in western Iowa also. And have seen the pretty much hidden statue at John Wayne Airport in Anaheim. The man was seriously influential in Hollywood and politics and he had his opinions and detractors but he pretty much built Anaheim. Big fan no matter the faults.

    I worked for the moving company that was hired to bring the household goods from John Wayne's Lido Island Estate into storage. It was an ongoing effort and I was familiar with three of his sons, who oversaw the project. They didn't come off like their dad. Thankfully.

    My father was everything to me. Smartest man I ever knew. Had the greatest wit. Had so many talents( actor, town officer, artistic painter using anything from pencil to oil based ). With my equally intellectual mother I was instilled with their interests in science, art and history to where I was asked to teach my high school class in science for two days, history for a day and drama class for a day. So where am I going with this? Parents make us . Some make us who we become. And a few make us to become who we become later on. Regardless mothers and fathers are the back bone of society. Be we good or not it is how you raise your kids. If parents put love,knowledge, respect for others into the children they produce. The world would be a better place

The next weekend they gave a picture for my mom of all three of them with both of them singing it to mom. Great guys.

    If a movie had John Wayne in it, you knew who the winners were from the start.
    Best John Wayne film (for me) was, "Island in the Sky". Then "The High and the Mighty". Both films had an aviation theme, pre commercial jets.

    IT'S kinda Strange too read the Comments these Days. As there are many from Older People that Speak in much Kinder Ways. And people of these Days, have nothing but Bad Thing's too Say of Anyone else too tell the Truth it seems.
    As for John Wayne he was a Kind, Firm, Honest, Straight forward, and No BS Type of Man. That was a part of Forging the Country, We Call Home. IN His Lifetime this Nation was going through it's Golden Year's of it's Existence, I'm Thinking 🤔🤔 and it's Formative Year's as Well. Now it's been Forty Five Plus Year's Since His passing? And Yet He is Still Revered, & Remembered more So Now it Seems. Than He was when He First Passed Away. The Man Was & Is the Essence of What the WORLD is Told An American Person IS. The Medal they had Commentated, & Created in His Name, just before His DEATH. States that Same Exact Phrase that He was Simple Stated An American.
    The Medal State's His Acting Name of John Wayne, then it's Says AMERICAN. That's Seems Very Humble too Me. But also it Seems Exactly as it Should Be. Since that is Basically. All We Ever do? IS Try too Endeavor to Be Basic American, Citizens Ourselves in the End. Thank You for Sharing, and Allowing for Comment's in the End. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🔔🔔
