Hi! My name is Heline and I am a Finnish flute player. I make flute covers, improvise and play classical music. I also create informational videos about flute playing and some other instruments I play (Akai Pro EWI5000, ocarina, dizi).
The studio version really has much more strength.
Yes, Heline. Thx 💪👍🤙
Simply one of the greatest bands ever, I am a fan since I was 15
Hi Helene, you really should check out the rest of that concert, it's mainly their earlier material but rearranged for orchestra. It wasn't just a prog rock band hiring an orchestra for a few shows, the songs were partly rewritten so that the classical instruments were fully integrated into the music.
The song shifts keys between A minor and B minor and is polymetric in the verses - the drums are playing in 5/8 time against the rest of the group playing in 4/4 time.
Nice Heline. The album that Long Distance Runaround comes from is a classic called Fragile. No orchestra on it but it is fabulous none the less. And the 4 albums after Fragile is where Yes really created some epic long form music. Give them a listen.
I saw Yes for the first time as a 15 year old 45 years ago. I’ve seen them three or four times since and I have to say that, even though he had some health issues throughout the years, Jon Anderson’s voice is still amazing, and very close to what it was almost 5 decades ago. He’s still hitting notes in some of the higher registers, which is amazing, especially compared to other rock singers of his generation, who pretty much just grunt and talk their way through songs now.
Thank you for your thoughtful insight on this and all of your reviews/reactions. I especially love it when you get a little kick out of something and you smile and chuckle. I’m glad that you have fun doing this.
Yes doing a repetitive song is so exceptional, this may be the only song you could say that about a Yes composition. And the song is followed by a piece called The Fish which always is incorporated and it's a solo piece by the bass player, Chris Squire.
Fantastic band, I have actually never heard this version though. Chris Squire is one of my favorite bass players. Steve Howe and the rest are great too..
There is a song by Yes called "future times-rejoice" from the TORMATO album, the track was written with a flutist in mind for some parts, no flutist turned up, so Steve Howe the guitarist played, aka Flutist, great reaction BTW, don't be scared to criticise, again great reaction.
The whole song is in 4/4, but some bars use triplets, and in other places the snare drum plays 5th 8th note instead of every 4th.
If the song sounds repetitive, remember: It's part of an album that is LOADED with complex and baffling stuff. It provides a respite from the complexity. It's a pleasant counterbalance.
Prog rock at it's best. If only Rick Wakeman (keyboards) had been there, too. Great reaction, Heline
Tom Brislin did a great job, but hes no Wakeman
@@martinreed5964 I think Keith Emerson was the only one on keyboards that compares to Wakeman, but not nearly as gentle or subtle. I would love to slip a microphone into whatever quantum reality Emerson quit ELP and for Yes. God knows, we didn't need Love Beach!
Beautiful
I SEEN YES IN THE EARLY 70s,THIS SOUNDED REPETITIVE AND SHALLOW FROM WHAT I REMEMBER..THANK YOU
Love Yes
Roundabout.
Now you are getting in to the sweet stuff!
I was there in Amsterdam and I loved it. The orchestra really added to the sound, it was a pity Rick Wakeman was not there, but the keyboard player was great and the orchestra added a lot. And both Steve and Chris play phenomenal. I loved it in this concert when the orchestra started swinging to the music. Pity it is complicated to have Nightwish perform with a symphony orchestra, now that would be awesome.
Hi Heline...Just wanted to mention that in the original studio version or versions with Bill Bruford on drums, when the song transitions into the verse something really cool and clever happens with the time signature and snare accents. If you count it out you'll find that Bill Bruford on drums is basically counting in 5/4 with the snare coming on 1. The rest of the band is in 4/4. Then the sequence is inverted then back to a 5 count till eventually the pattern resolves back to 1. The beat is always on a 5 count which effectively makes it 1, then 2 then 3 then 4 resolving back to one)on the snare). I've tried playing this and I must count it out otherwise I will get it wrong Very hard to feel. Although Alan White is a very very good drummer even he has trouble with this one. That's what makes Bruford one of the best Fusion drummers ever. Thanks for your take on this piece *cheers* 🙂
Agreed I love Alan Whites’ work with Yes but Brufords playing with them was as equally creative as Howe, Wakeman and Squires
-cheers
On this song the time signatures are all over the place. The drummer plays in 5/4 time (but sometimes doesn't quite get there as he is supposed too), the rest of the band predominantly play 4/4 with some 7/8 fills just to make it interesting.
Alan white was a great drummer, but IMHO, he never did this track justice, certainly not in the way that his predecessor (Bill Bruford) did. Bill was a more precise percussionist, with a Jazz oriented feel to his playing.
IMV the original version on the studio album and in particular the live version on Yessongs, which leads into the the next track, The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus), which is Chris Squire's bass solo piece, is the definitive version. The orchestra adds little to the song.
If you'd like to hear some YES music that's not quite as repetitive, I recommend you check out their 9 minute piece 'Perpetual Change', along with their 18 1/2 minute Masterpiece 'Close to the Edge', but if you want to have a spiritual experience, try listening to Close to the Edge lying down, with headphones, in the dark, eyes closed. Enjoy.
In the studio version, the song is all 4/4 time, except the snare drum, which is in 5/4. If you don't like repetition, this band wasn't even big on the verse/bridge structure we're all familiar with.
Hi Heline ! What you said around 3:00 about the time signature was really interesting. Long Distance Runaround has, like most Yes songs, tricky time signatures. The drummer you see here, Alan White, once revealed his style was "playing unusual time signatures but making them sound like 4/4
This has been one of my favorite recordings since I first heard it in 72’, still have the original LP, your response is great to see ,
Topical Graphic Oceans is amazing, have a look 💖🎼🦋
This was a pretty interesting reaction video. The group, Yes, had a few pretty good hit songs. This artist is a very good singer. I think that is what I got out of listening to this. The peoptry is catchy and the singing is superb. Combining it with a classical setting is a nice touch. It pales in comparisom with, let's say, the Moody Blue. But, I enjoyed it.
Although they were/are masters of their instruments, drummer Alan White played and recorded with John Lennon. Ummm...that didn't quite come out as I intended it to. GREAT musicians, anyway.
Get into early Yes, 1970 -1973. Master instrumentalists. Rick Wakeman on keyboards ought to get you interested.
I love your reaction videos. Looking forward to more wonderful reaction videos💖🎶💙🎶
I tell you one prog-rock song you would really love,
Pirates, by Emerson, lake and Palmer.
These three musicians are classically trained and Pirates was written especially for orchestra.
As multi instrumentalist myself (7 different instruments) I love orchestrated prog-rock and I'm sure you would love it too.
Thanks

Yes is the most progressive Rock Band ever, ever, ever
You're young,,, the greatest music was written in the 70's
this is by no means the best item of music from an outstanding 2001 symphonic concert...its ok for those with a short attention span....try some of the others before forming any opinion
Fan of Yes for years. But Tull is still my favorite from that era. Maybe Pink Floyd. There are so many
I'm a Yes fan but I don't really like thier music being interrupted with music that seems to have nothing to do with Yes music. It sounds like a movie soundtrack. The Moody Blues had orchestrations between songs on Days of Future passed that would transition you from one song to another. That is how orchestrations should be on pop albums.
It will be interesting to see if you like the new stuff. I really like 90215.
Listen to close to the edge by Yes
You really should listen the studio version as well. This is live, but suffers from low tempo.
hello blacktecc. i hope you are well. see you soon. 🚴♀
Who wrote the symphonic intro?
Wheater you like it or not
PLEASE go listen to the original studio version of any YES song before you critique a live version. The studio version is always the evaluative reference, and will give you an understanding of what they are doing on stage. This band's heydays were 1970 through 1977, but the surviving members are still active and released an album in 2023! I saw them live as a college freshman in 1974. It was an awesome experience.
Go to the original album track....This is a mess.
