Enjoyed your reaction. Audience reaction to Yes is unique. Unlike rock band contemporaries, Yes audiences generally smiled throughout performances. A very different vibe.

I have a boot of a show I attended, and near the tape machine during I Get Up, I Get Down, a young girl asks her mother twice, “Mommy? Why are you smiling?”
      We know why.
Btw, it was a monumental Close To The Edge that night.
      Amongst many others.
      Greatest show I ever attended.❤

This is part of an entire concert with that symphony. The entire concert is available on DVD and most of it is on youtube. They do perform Close to the Edge with the symphony in this concert, but the best production they do at this concert is The Ritual: Nous sommes du soleil. It is available on youtube, but it is in three parts because it is very long.

Dude, I get it. We get it. It's Okay! It's a phenomenon there to absorb and enjoy over and over again because there are nuances that you keep picking up 50 years running. I LOVE YES.

You not only get to hear YES, you get to feel their music. Is probably the most spiritual of all the YES songs for me.

Nobody does it better than YES live or in the studio! I listen to this song every day and get emotional every time. YES is the greatest gift to music that God could have ever given us!🤩

Truly amazing. Jon at 68! Granted still beautiful at 78. I also enjoy 'State of Independence' from that show tons. His solo album 'Change We Must' is him with much orchestration. Soaring. Ty!

Even though I have listened to and loved this song for decades, when I listen to this specific live version, I always get emotional. You phrased it well: this is a spiritual experience. To me, the orchestral accompaniment is what helps this transcend the studio version. I’m glad that this was recorded so that we can enjoy its magnificence.

Jon Anderson says when introducing this song live that it's like a fine wine - it gets better with age.

You should watch "Ritual" from the same concert, even the keyboardist plays the drums and the bassist plays the timpani.

the yes members said to make music in a studio was their job, to make music live was their passion.
    I think that says all.

I was there, in Amsterdam, at the symphonic concert. I still wear the T-shirt -) It was amazing. Before joining Yes in 1972, the young drummer Alan White played in the Plastic Ono Band (album Imagine, John Lennon) and the album All Things Must Pass (George Harrison).

Beautiful reaction Jone, indeed Yes are at their very best live. This concert with the orchestra is so brilliant. I'm sure you'll agree their music fits so beautifully with orchestra. They actually open the concert with Close to the Edge to a standing ovation, I highly recommend you watch that one. Also from the same DVD, The Gates of Delirium, absolutely epic & the final "soon" section will bring tears to your eyes. I saw them on the following tour for the first time in Australia as a 5 piece with Rick Wakeman, had waited 30 years, was fortunate to meet them at a book signing in Sydney it was a dream come true. You should also check out a live version of Awaken, they're all great. All the best!

There was a way on the DVD to omit the video stuff and just watch the live concert. Nevertheless, you should check out more songs from this "Symphonic" Live. It's great. "In the Presence Of," for one.

Your reaction was "Great" That's what happened to Yes people when we first heard this song on the Close To The Edge album and then Live....we cried!!! Not a dried eye in the audience!!! Another Beautiful song of Yes is "Turn of The Century" from "The Going For The One" album released in 1977. A masterpiece album and a masterpiece song. They call Chris "fish" because he named YES this beautiful band. YES is not an English word. Its meaning is FISH. (Shindeleria Praimaturus) Just as his creation, a solo bass section in FRAGILE.
