Lesson learned: just because a video wasn't released this week, doesn't mean the information in it is obsolete. That's why we have books, and in fact, that's exactly where I learned it from.

Great video. This great little trick was hidden way up on page 35 of my owners manual. I never knew about it. I had a similar problem when my key fob got too cold, causing the battery to not put out enough voltage (it was low to begin with). I opened up the key fob and warmed up the battery in my palm for a few minutes, and it then worked. But, I feel a lot better knowing that the start button is capable of inducing a current in the key fob so it can put out a signal even with a totally dead battery.
Thanks Rocky! This information actually is in the book, but being several hundred pages, it's easy to miss.
When the battery gets marginally low, you'll start having problems. In a perfect world, the car will warn you when leaving the vehicle. I've had luck opening the fob and spinning the battery clockwise some, for some reason that would make it work for a little while. After a while I got tired of opening the door with the key and touching the fob to the button so I replaced the battery and all is well.
The salesman showed me how to do it when I bought the vehicle. Three years later I had forgotten how to do it, but I did remember there was a way. I just now replaced the battery

@@candygreen1831 No, it wasn't working before, now you replaced the battery, and it's still not working. The keyfob itself is the problem, it's not getting power from the battery, most likely, but the coil behind the button can excite the coil in the fob and get it to work. You might need to replace the keyfob.
As I write this comment I have a flat key fob battery and this as far as I am concerned is a eye opener for me because I was worried what if it happens where the buttery is not easily available, I can't start the car etc, etc, but after watching this video I am assured I am not going to be stranded anywhere with fear and worries of how to solve the problem.It was a brilliant video and 10 out of 10 for the presentation Thanks a lot .

I agree with many others. I was never told this. I have one fob that works but another fob that is "dead" and will not work from a distance. I asked the dealer about a new one and he quoted me almost $500 for a new fob with programming. Then I found this video but was super skeptical about "touching" the Toyota symbol on the fob to the starter button to start and drive the car. However, I gave it a try and it works! Unbelievable. Now at least I know I have a back up in case my daughter loses the working key fob or something. Thanks a million.
The dealer is certainly never going to tell you this, that might impede future business. It's not in their best interest to tell you. I read the owner's manual, that's all I did. There's lots of other information in there as well.
These keyfobs are nothing to mess with. $500 for a replacement is about the going rate. Keep them in good condition, don't get them wet. Most times nowadays, they never have to be removed from a pocket or purse, so there should never be a reason to lose them.
So glad this video exists. I'm working and thought I was going to be out over a hundred bucks because my car wouldn't start. I thought I was going to be out 600 bucks for a tow because of a two-dollar battery.. Thanks man!

I was aware of the key in the fob, but had no idea how to start the car. Thanks. I did put a new battery in and did not work, so off to my Toyota dealer. The start procedure saved me, able to start to drive to the dealer.
No problem. I have found that the battery in this fob has to be brand-new fully charged up, not one that has been sitting around for some time on a shelf. It might be worth your while to try another battery in the fob before succumbing to dealer prices.
Please Gary Mattews, I just had similar issues with my car. I changed the battery in the key fob and yet my doors nor ignition powered up. I jst kept punching d button nd the car came up. When you got to the dealership what did they say was wrong with the key fob or the car. I am in Nigeria and i dont have the privilege to visit any dealership.

I was looking for information on how to put my car in neutral to move it back out of my garage to work on it, but this is also great information!
There should be a very small hatch by the shifter that you have to pry out carefully. You'll then need a stick of some kind (a screwdriver will do the trick), inside will be a release button you need to hold down, then you can shift it. It's been that way since they mandated you to step on the brake to shift out of park, somewhere around 1990 that I remember.
To this day, stepping on the brake to shift out of park really annoys me. So I bought a classic car that doesn't have that problem. The shifter isn't tied to the key either. Doesn't have a steering wheel lock, or wraparound turn signals, none of those things were federally mandated in '67. Of course if I leave the windows down anybody could reach in and throw it in neutral and roll it away, but back in those days it was pretty rare you'd hear about stuff like that happening.

That is good to know! I had that trouble with my '12 Camry XLE V6 about 3 weeks ago! I was able to get it started. Then went and immediately replaced Both batteries in both key fibs! Mark in Iowa.
