There is a thing worse than being the last man on Earth. Being the last man on a desolate alien world with only a sandy beach and an ocean.

Right side of my brain automatically thought he was going to take a picture of the ringed planet with his "cell phone."
    Left side said: "Erm, no."

Its funny how something so campy looking(even by the FX standards of the 1980's) can be so awe inspiring. Nice looking beach too!

I was quite simply stunned by this ending. The imagery took my breath away and the music left me dazed. Two friends had to take my arms and guide me to the theatre lobby where understanding management administered a cold drink. This is a wondrous example of the power of the motion picture image when sublimely joined with a magnificent film score. It is indeed cinema greatness and the creative team that realized the vision of a gifted director deserve the highest recognition for their work.

The gravity of the rising Saturn is pulling up the water, forming those strange clouds. Same scene at the beginning but with the sun. Now it's Saturn. Not sure if there is any alegory with Cronos the Titan, greek mythology or something like that

Well Zac, in 4 hours you're gonna be thirsty, and in 8 hours you'll be hungry. Plenty of salt water and not a drop to drink, no food in sight. What the heck, enjoy the view.

I was twenty-one and just off the ship after a long cruise. As a lifelong film afficionado and sci-fi fanboy I knew it was low-budget, and working along well-used last-man-on-earth themes but I was blown away nevertheless. It was the music that got me. Bruno Lawrence had only played a thug before this.

Almost my favourite sci-fi movie. The best bits are when Bruno is seemingly alone, then when the others turn up, it's not quite so fun. Still, one of the best endings, right up there with the Incredible Shrinking Man and Knowing...

Ringed Gas giants are very common and in our galaxy alone they have discovered many, some with ring systems, maybe he was transported to another "saturn-like" system in a star system millions of light years away.

One of the best possible themes for a film. The television show turned it into a farce. The idea for how people are wiped out is great. But like all of them, he runs into "other people". "Hell is other people" Sartre, who turned done the Nobel Prize. I can think of a hundred things to do. Don't even want to run into anyone else, who like in this film, can screw up my Utopia.

If so, it would have to be in a different solar system because Earth wouldn't be habitable if it were suddenly moved to orbit Saturn. Maybe Saturn was moved to be near Earth? (the gravity effect would probably make life also impossible on Earth. Maybe that is what was causing the ocean to spurt upwards)

To me the theme conveys the confusion that Zac's going through if you took away the score you'd probably hear him going thru Einsteins theory and scientific jargon then at 1:57 He looks at his tape recorder drops it and say's ah fuck it i dont know what the hell happened but im going to chill out an enjoy the spectacle

  • @montylc2001

Interesting movie, but the "Saturn Rising" makes no sense science wise. Any planet that close to Saturn or a similar gas giant would be tidally locked, would only spin on it's axis once per orbit, and Saturn would stay in the same place in the sky, always. It would slowly change phases like the moon does, but would not move, at least not much.
