Chacchoben - A Cruise Excursion Review

- Chacchoben is a Mayan ruin site in Costa Mayo, Mexico. While on my latest cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras, I adventured with my daughters to see Chacchoben and review it as cruise excursion offered by the cruise line. The excursion is rated as moderate activity and as a fluffy cruiser I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it all. Let's just say the ruins ruined me but I overcame. Come with me to Mexico and enjoy this cruise excursion.

Oh Tony, I feel you man! I hefted my fluffy butt up ruins, waterfalls, volcanos and caves a few weeks ago. If I had to give a commentary during my hikes, all I would have been able get out was heavy breathing and the occasional grunt of pain. Thanks for sharing!

You have inspired me to consider booking this excursion to the ruins. I’m mid 50’s, a bit fluffy, a little arthritic, and have been worried about how I would get up all those stairs in all that heat. I love that you have shown some of us an easier way to get up to see it all. As a short girl, the steps still look steep to me but, with less steps I could potentially scoot myself up or down each step. Great vlog, Tony.
There was also a route to the far left of those stairs at Tony took our guide showed us that it was broken up a lot more and there was kind of something to hang on to all the way especially going back down and everybody helped everybody else but yeah it's worth it.
Chacchoben is so wonderful... If anyone is interested in touring there and doesn't want to do a ship excursion, I highly *highly* recommend looking up Native Choice. David and Ivan really are natives, and they grew up with the ruins as their playground. Their knowledge and their passion for the Mayan culture and the ruins is absolutely contagious. It was one of if not the best excursion my son and I ever did. Wish more Carnival ships out of Galveston went to Costa Maya instead of stops like Progreso!

If you ever have the opportunity to see some ruins I recommend that you do so. While cruising on the Carnival Glory had a stop in Belize City and did the Mayan ruins excursion. Was so glad I did!!
Did the ruins when I was young & fit...now leave me on the ship with a book & a drink! Hope you guys had a great time.
We went there about 3 years ago! Thanks for the walk down memory lane. The ruins are awesome. We had a local guide who was antigovernment. She was a kick! We booked on our own and paid about 1/3 less.
Loved that tour, the plants and wild monkeys were a bonus.
Cruising on Mardi Gras in January for my daughter's 13th birthday and now I'm even more excited to visit the Mayan Ruins!!. Thanks for taking us along. Really enjoyed this vlog!

Tony my knees hurt every time you grunt! I appreciate you taking us along and doing a review with experience vs price.
I went on this excursion right before the cruise industry was shut down. This was a bucket list item. I was very surprised at the number of temples there. I thought there was only one. We climbed up one set of steps and there were 2 more temples. I'm so glad we did this excursion. It is worth the money. We were warned to use bug spray. The temperature was extremely high. This was an absolutely amazing experience.

Great vid Tony. I did a couple excursions to Chachobben in 2019 and 2020. Brought back so many memories to see it. It was a really interesting experience.

That was so great to "meet" your daughters/their husbands! a first cruise experience for them? Sounds like you're having an amazing time! I know they can't modify a historical structure, but if they could somehow put in a railing it would be a lot safer (to climb). Really gorgeous footage you took. Thank you for sharing!

Good on you, I couldn't do it in Belize at Altun Ha. Said NOPE!. I wasn't even fluffy then. My clumsy self would be tumbling down those stairs.

I enjoyed Chacchoben when I was there in 2019. I'd love to go back! I did the 31 stairs with my then 13-year-old son. Felt like Rocky at the top🤣.

Our first cruise, our first port stop and our first cruise excursion was the Chacchoben Ruins tour and it's still at the top of my favorites list! My hubby and I did all the climbing up/down we were allowed to do, which was a challenge because it was very humid on those steps, making them pretty slippery w/the moss. But we didn't fall or have any scares, lol. Just a gorgeous, beautiful place! We loved our tour guide and the lengthy history he gave us. Including a lot of the history of the culture in that area and Mexico in general. Absolutely loved it there! Lots of Fitbit steps for us as well! I'm so glad you did that your w/your kids and had that tremendous experience! Worth the memories!🌴♥️

I did this excursion as well, but on a different cruise line and I had a great time too. I’ve also been to tulum which I would consider to be a step up from moderate, more walking and much hotter/ less shade!

Thanks for the great video, Tony. I've been to those ruins and each stair is very tall and very rough; my tennis shoes kept catching on them, so I only went up a few steps. Love visiting ruins.

Hi Tony, it was great seeing your family! I missed you and Jenny going live, it's not a great Tuesday without you two (no guilt) it's really beautiful to see you all having fun cruising. We had a Mayan Ruins excursion in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel in 2001. 5 days after 911, yes didn't want to cancel. It was a great trip but scary and weird time to travel. Everyone was so nice, but we were welcomed on the island by police strapped with rifles across their chests 👀 However, we made the best of it, as you have been on your cruises during these different times. The ship was half full then. Well, thank you for bringing us along. Give Jenny our love ❤ See you in the next one....Bye 🙋🏽♀️

Great review. This was one of the expeditions we'd planned to take in January, until we had to cancel our cruise. So it's nice to get a cruiser's view of Chacchoben.
Tony and family, I thoroughly recommend a set of telescopic walking poles for these excursions. Amazing how much easier the up and the down can be with a set of sticks.

We took this same excursion in 2016 and Pablo was our tour guide. It's good to see he's doing well.

Hi Tony! We were also at the Chacchoben Ruins in Costa Maya about 2 weeks ago when we sailed on the Disney Fantasy. We absolutely loved it! While we were there we had a torrential downpour so part of the site was not accessible due to mud and being unsafe but we climbed those same stairs that you did and it was a challenge for sure....especially because it was raining! It is absolutely beautiful and amazing to hear about the history of the Mayan's and their culture. Our guide also explained about the cemetery you passed on the main road before getting to Chacchoben and how the local people were getting prepared for the "Day of the Dead" celebrations. When we arrived back to the port we saw an iguana hanging out in the parking lot. We didn't get a chance to explore the port itself when we got back. Disney's protocol was that if you went on an excursion you had to first return to the ship and then you could disembark again and explore the port on your own. We were soaked from the rain so we just got back on the ship. Looks like you guys also had a great time! Enjoy the rest of your cruise.

I love the confidence @11:43. Go girl. I have been to Costa Maya many times but hardly go beyond the terminal until Hurricane Mitch came. I had made friends with people who worked at the facility. So I decided to check in one of them, the place was devastated. Now it's 10 years I have not been there, seeing thus video brought back a lot of memories and in my next trip, I will book this tour and spend the other half of the day ti check in on old friends in Mahajaul. We did some Mayan ruins (in Cozumel) on horseback several years ago… the excursion included lunch and they raffled a bottle of tequila that I won… and I hardly remember the rest. LOL
