Modern "coaching" lol. Most of these guys just do machines for 50 million reps. Golden Age guys did heavy free weights, they didn't just do machines and up the dosage like modern bodybuilders do.

Well because Arnold and others of their era tried to get as big and conditioned as they could, just like the guys in the open now. Technically, this classic physique is not "bodybuilding," they just want to fit into an ideal, which wasn't necessarily those guys were chasing to mimic back then.

@@wingedhussar1453 Yeah, but the thing is, those bodybuilders didn't have a weight limit cap, they just happened to be around the weights classic physique competitors are trying to mimic now. Only for six years, from 1974 to 1979, they had heavyweight (over 200 lbs) and lightweight (under 200 lbs), the winner of those competed head to head to win the overall, that was it. Other than that, the goal was always to get as big and conditioned as they could, just like modern bodybuilders in the open category. The guys in "the Golden Era" were the biggest of their time, they are idealized now because things have gone out of control in terms of sheer mass. Nevertheless, it is an arbitrary ideal and quite a new trend, despite the term "classic".

@@notatroll8744 I remember watching an interview or something can't exactly remember, but Arnold said he could have gotten a lot bigger, but that was not his interest. Because his philosophy of bodybuilding was to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible (beautiful and attractive) e.g. how big each body part should be compared to the other etc. and that's why Arnold has a problem with today's bodybuilding and has kinda lost its meaning. Today it's more about getting big as possible rather than looking that much aesthetically pleasing.

He would get destroyed in the arm department by the likes of Phil or Lee Priest. They are much more complete with better separation, better conditioning and much more complete.

i disagree, the sport became extrem in so many levels - its unhealthy and could lead to death. in the past, even though the physics weren't achived naturaly, body builders still looked like human. now they look like fucking aliens, with sub 5% body fat and 300 lb body wight. classic competitors aren't different, they just have a small mid-section - some of them have more mass then open body builders.

I find myself staring in awe at Arnold's physique. It's amazing.
Arnold’s, chest and overall upper body is still an amazing spectacle even today. Had those guys gone crazy with the conditioning like they do today it would be insane to see those old classic physics.

Separation is Arnold's legs from the front is amazing. Massive arms calves great condition. Still amazing 40-45 years later.

Chris looked amazing this year, great improvements. But to be fair, Arnold was just something else. Your eyes just get drawn to his epic physique, it's a timeless physique. Arnold has that certain dominating presence, hard to explain it in words. I don't know how he would have looked with todays "supplements", if he would have looked even better, or ruined his lines, but his old school physique is still unmatched to this day.
Before I start this video I can tell you one thing right now: Arnold smokes him in the arms - department and in the chest department as well as in the calves department.

We´re talking about almost 50 years difference in every pic. Come on... For a man who only used T, dianabol and primo more than 50 years ago but who trained twice a day every single day. That is a major difference. Tren itself does half of the work now a days.
Fuckin' A brother! It's night and day. Tren, GH, pepetides, slin, etc are things they didn't have back then. Also the physique standards were entirely different back then - no judges expected shredded glutes, hams, etc. As Coleman himself said, if Arnold had all the stuff they had in Ron's time, he would beat everyone. ;)
Judging the glutes is just for the GFP guys anyway. Keep the glutes covered, its an overrated body part.

Arnold's arm looks like an impression to the He-Man toys. The triceps, brachs and bi's - perfectly stacked on the forearms.
The angle of the pose is also better in Arnold with his face still relating to the audience.

As a quasi-builder I would take Arnold look all day good enough legs and back in 74 but those chests and arms are still looking impressive even by 2021 standards.
Bumstead pulled the classic physique version of what Dorian did in his second Olympia. Insane improvement for one year for a reigning champion. Filling out his physique with that level of conditioning - he's gonna be damn near impossible to beat until his body fails him.
I think a better comparison would be Arnie vs Wesley Vissers 2020 because Chris’ conditioning (and superior legs) makes this a no contest in my opinion.
Chris's hamstrings are the only thing he has going for him in this comparison

It’s the conditioning mate. Things have come a long way in that regard. Chris has nothing on Arnold’s arms, chest and calves though. There’s some areas where Arnie is untouchable.

Arnold had legs that matched his body. 1974 especially so. That lat spread from 1971 was awesome.
Have to give Cbum credit though, he has improved light years since 2019 and given another year to bring up his biceps, the sky is the limit for him! And as you said, modern judging would of given this match up to Cbum.

Chris wins literally everything besides chest and arms. His legs are miles ahead, his conditioning isn't even comparable, his mid section is far better, and he's got more of a V taper.

i think one thing people tend to not think about with these 70's guys and how big/full their chest and arms are is the difference in conditioning. Look at some modern bodybuilders like 8 weeks out from a show they are just about as conditioned as these guys on show day and their chests and arms are twice as full then.
Maybe couple of % but its also that old photos are not showkng nowhere near the detail compared to todays photos

So if we are considering weight restrictions, Chris’s structure is just better. Shoulders are better, abs are better and legs are way better. Sure Arnold could’ve taken better peds but that’s not gonna change the way his shoulders and legs developed.

And arnold was at his prime in the 70’s and the science of bodybuilding was was way worse compared to now. Imagine arnold was born the same year as Chris. (Sorry for my English, huge Chris fan btw)

Arnold genetics aren't that great, huge waist and stick looking legs, just huge in the upper body. Even with today's drugs and training, he would still look like he did in the 70s maybe bigger but his genetic flaws will still be pretty noticeable.
Many people are really bias when it comes to old school, especially when it comes to Arnold and they can't accept that Arnold wouldn't stand against today's lineups.
