  • Our journey today takes us up Constellation Road & down the creek to the seemingly forgotten Black Rock Mine. Operated as early as 1902, this old copper camp once featured large bunkhouses, a mill, and other support equipment before being abandoned entirely during World War II. Today, numerous ruins remain, including at least two cemeteries where 38 people have been buried.

    My great-grandfather, Frank Long, was one of the Black Rock Mine co-owners. He was the accountant. Thanks for the information and video.

    Another great video, with nice drone footage of the Black Rock Mine area. It always gives me a different perspective. Interesting to see that the Monte Cristo trail was open too - the last two times I was there (last summer and fall) the cable barrier was across the access trail and locked. Either BLM opened it again or someone has cut the lock. Also interesting to see some activity in the Unida Mine area. There seems to be more mining/prospecting activity along Constellation and Buckhorn Roads over the last year, with some previously open areas being closed. Take care & looking forward to your next video!

      Thanks, Terry! Glad you enjoyed it. Interesting to hear about the cable blocking the trail. The times I have seen it (most recently as well as 3-4 years ago) it was on the ground. Hopefully it will remain open for people to visit, although the area does seem to be more active lately. Thanks again & take care.

    Another great video, thanks for the ride. The last time we were at the Monte Cristo there were quit a few bees to deal with.

      Yes, I was there last year and the place was alive with those big black bumblebees.

      Thank you, Jimmy! We didn't see any bees while we were there, but we also didn't spend that long walking around.

    Excellent Vid. Haven't been to the Black Rock, but the Unida and Monte Cristo many times. I appreciate the historical info you provide as that can sometimes be difficult to find.. I can't wait to check it out. Thank you.

      The Unida area has been worked enough it's like swiss cheese. And I'm surprised at the apparent new activity there. I don't think that's been worked for a long time.

      @@W7DSY Agreed! I was out there a 3-4 months ago and there was nothing there but the Swiss cheese.

      This was a great ride and the weather was absolutely perfect...!!!! I know there was a mention of the Monte Cristo being closed and or protected by someone with a rifle. When we were there absolutely no trace of that ..... the area was burned pretty good all around the mine - so don’t know if that has anything to do with that someone not policing it anymore .... 🤷‍♂️ but either way great place to check out and as of Saturday February 6 2021.... All good ..!!!

      @@olebluemonster We did a ride up to the Black Rock Mine today. It was an excellent drive. We spent several hours looking at everything. It was a bit crowded with about 10 side by sides there. The upper Unida mine are is closed and listed as private property. There is s shed and some heavy equipment on site. The lower entry area had nothing posted. Thank you for all the info.

    Good catch, Scotty. I've been up there numerous times, have missed the Black Rock. With 31 graves, makes me wonder if there was a mining accident. No mention of a 'town' there so? Also re: graveyards, I'm sure you're familiar with the Williams Family Ranch. There is a graveyard near there with 17 sites, including those of 3 girls who died in a cabin fire 10/17/79. Approximate location is N 34.10153, W -112.56555. I've not been there (yet), account, looks very remote. You can see a cross on top of the hill from the road to the south. Again, excellent video.

      Thank you, sir! It is curious to have so many graves. An accident could certainly explain some of them. And actually I have not heard about Williams Family Ranch -- we've always turned around just past the Gold Bar. I will drop a pin in the 'future trip list' but if you make it out, I'd love to hear more about it. Thanks again for watching!

    A good morning we just watched your video really a good job narrating at. We love how an informational your videos are. We actually just did this trail yesterday and noticed when we got down into slim Jim wash that the gate is now complete barbeyer wire fencing going all the way across that Creek. Do you know of any other way to get down into slim Jim Creek? It looks really pretty and we'd love to find a way down there. Thanks so much. Randy

      Thanks for following along! We haven't done any group rides yet, but there has certainly been a lot of interest. Tucson Wash is definitely on my list -- it's been a couple years since I've been in the area, but I definitely want to get back down south sometime.

    Most of the areas in and around this video are on Arizona State Land Trust land, requiring permitting. Also to mention, PRIVATE PROPERTY.
    Before heading out, verify you're not trespassing.
    Check out the ASLD Parcel Viewer - gis.azland.gov/webapps/parcel/?loc=-112.0200,33.4300,8&layers=3,2,0

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  3 роки тому

      True. The Black Rock appears to be at least partially on private property, however, we observed no signs posted along the trail. I always check the ASLD parcel viewer (and other maps) before heading off on a trip! I also make it a point to carry up-to-date AZ Trust land permits with me on every trip. Thanks for the reminder.

    • @azoffroad_net
      @azoffroad_net  3 роки тому +1

      I think you would be okay. You will probably need a bit more clearance than the road into Swansea, but 4WD shouldn't be needed.

    When I read the report from the grave research project I found it very curious as to the number of grave sites and how they were determined to be male or female graves. Then I read that the grave locations and gender was determined by a person on the project who "divined" them. Their research methods are very suspect to say the least and is based on very little other than "divining."
