Some say his mixer is upside down and recently he's been found lowering all the studio dubs below the background music. All we know is he is not the Stig, but the Stig's sound engineer cousin.
Everyone of these early Top Gear UA-cam videos has horrific sound production, so I think it is intentional that free content has something wrong with it. Happens usually, free is almost as good as the one you have to pay for :D
What happens when these videos get ripped for youtube by the uploader is that, for the most part, these shows are in 5.1 Dolby® with most of the dialogue in the center channel and when the soundtrack is ported to stereo, they usually don't have a mixer that allows them to port the center channel into the stereo mix through an aux send. So a lot of the dialogue gets lost and all you get is the L/R stereo mix.

The fact of the matter is, driving while having a conversation on the phone increases the risk of accidents and reduces your ability to respond to changing conditions on the road. So if it was really all about making the roads as safe as possible, I guess you'd have to make it illegal to talk on the phone period. But that's not a realistic option and education is always more effective than enforcement. So if it was really about making the roads as safe as possible, they'd focus on that. But that doesn't raise any revenue.

The old DBS that set out to replace it is better in my opinion. The clear taillights that are just swooping outlines instead of the full tallight speak more to me, and the headlights having that black outline bothers me - you can see the lack of it on the 575 has made it age somewhat better. However, those are my only qualms with it. Were they to modernize those two sets of lights, it would look spectacular.

Going back and watching these old episodes reminds me that BBC and Top Gear really wasn't what made Wilman, Clarkson, May, and Hammond but the other way round.
That frustration at the gearbox is still how I feel in 2021, even though the test of the world has become placidly accepting of automatic/automated gearboxes.
Even just a simple automatic would have been fine in a heavy, luxurious GT like the Vanquish. That Vanquish's gearbox just seemed needlessly over-engineered for the sake of a novelty

Sukhdev R34 I’ve got most of the top gear DVDs thankfully so i watch all the uncut versions, i bought all of the Jeremy Clarkson solo dvds aswell even the ones that were originally on VHS from when i was younger i got the dvd versions and some of them were like 30 odd quid but wanted them all to rewatch and show my son haha
If that 6L engine were put in an American car with that kind of horsepower, Jeremy would be bellowing about it like he did with the Viper. "Give some European engineers 6 liters to play with and they'd come with a damn sight more than 480 horsepower."
Please come back to the Isle of Wight! I go down that road everyday en route to school and remember this, it would be brilliant to not have to hop to the mainland on the expensive ferry to see my automotive fix! I usually end up saving up for tickets and travelling all the way to Brands Hatch! Why not just make it a 20 minute walk for me by returning to the good old Military Road or some others that I could recommend for your filming? :)
I mean you can pick up these early Vanquishes for under $60,000 now, so can you really complain about a clunky transmission when you just bought one of the most beautiful cars ever made for such a relatively low price?
It's not an excuse though, especially if you are the original owner who paid full price for this 20+ years ago. This was around £165,000 at the time, which would be about £292,000 in today's money. Converted to US dollars, it's about $371,000. Imagine paying that much and finding it more frustrating to operate in the most mundane situations; and it malfunctioned a lot that gearbox.

Top Gear are not known for being very objectives but they usually don't get it wrong that much... The gearbox of the Vanquish is not great indeed but it is not an automatic with optional paddle shifts, it is a true manual (with an ASM mode but let's keep it simple). The car has a classic hand break which helps a lot for a 3 point turns!!
I agree. I hate flappy paddle gearbox. I preffer geartronic where you can actually change into reverse or drive and then use manual mode if you really want to. No point in flappy gear box if it is not your race day car.

I have to say, there may be plenty of cars that perform better for the money, but these are absolutely beautiful cars. I've seen two of them in person and had to stop and look both times.

What do you think the Aston would have if it was performance tuned? Its a luxury GT car, producing 500 Nm of torque. and a fantastic noise. Something the Evo lacks i think, is that V12 roar. The power in that V12 will be far more accessible and useable on the road, regardless of the location, gear or RPM, in comparison to the EVO, if, for no other reason than its NA, so no turbo lag.
the trick to driving one of those while doing a 3 point turn on a slope is to keep your foot on the brake, when you feel the clutch engage let off of it, its not that hard

Not any more! They sold it before getting rid of Jaguar and Land Rover. Don't know how they separate the top of the range Jag and Aston, they were both made at Bloxham near Banbury.

But the problem is that it wasn't a dual clutch box, it was an old school single clutch automated manual and they were terrible - slow upshifts, clunky gear-changes at low speed and the system used to ride the clutch so much you were lucky if it lasted more than 15k miles...
Yeah, the original Vanquish used to be my favorite, but now when I look at it, I'd prefer the DB7 Vantage. Could even be automatic, without those pesky paddles.
Turbocharging isn't "Fake horsepower" the naturally aspirated engine is an enormously wasteful piece of technology and the turbo charger simply returns some of that energy to the engine making it more efficient by giving it a boost in the form of extra compression.

He's right on the gearbox. An aston has now need for flappy paddles. It's not a racer, its a GT. Manual makes more sense.

These two our my favourite models. I would love each one in the beautiful silver metallic.

astons v 12 has small cylinders... and cosidering it has a limit of around 12k rpm means it is quite lacking torque

Beautiful Aston Martin. DB7 Vantage was also amazing. For some reason the DB9 and new Vanquish just don't measure up aesthetically.
