Lu Meng is one of my favorites of this period, who I feel gets an unfair treatment due to him defeating Guan Yu and Romances portrayal of Lu Meng's death. Hoping that this lore series will help people see a different side of him!
So glad to get this video about Lu Meng! He is my favourite Wu character by far, and was interesting throughout his entire adult life - including his mysterious death.
Lü Meng is definitely gonna quickly spend & do more effort that what Yuan Shu would extralegally expend allowances and materiel to Sun Ce and his ballooning army
Yes! I love these videos! As I mentioned to you before in a different video, ST, I am/was a big enthusiast of Romance of Three Kingdoms AND 三国志. Your presentation style is also very easy-going and nice to listen to. I appreciate your diligence! 👏🏼
Great my men. When i play Dynasty warrior, i thought Lu Meng is just like ordinary general with good background. I don't know that he's also have humble origins
In one episode we got: Mother in law fearing generals, hothead bromance, Yuan Shu doing Yuan Shu stuff to an innocent man and info about Wu's military. Let's talk lore is back in force.
Hey Serious Trivia, Do you know 6:49 Yuan Shao's Portrait and 3D model in Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is model after Chinese Actor (Jerry Chang Lu Feng) who play Lü Meng in Three Kingdoms 2010 TV show. My favorite Line is Lü Meng: (Guan Yu. Today, I shall make you pay for your arrogance!) Ep. 72 Three Kingdoms 2010.
So did the officers at least recieve a stipend from Sun Ce to cover the expenses somewhat? If not was joining sun ce seen as like a noble cause/way to gain prestige. If being one of Ce's officers is coming out of my own pocket what is the motivation? Long term investment to cain local power and prestiege? Just trying to understand what sun ce is tapping into here with this approach
you get rewarded in loot. Instead of thinking them as noble warriors you should see the Sun clan as the biggest mafia in the south. They ran tuntian farms using populations captured from raids in the north or attacks on Shanyue and unlike Wei or Shu tuntian farms, Wu tuntian system were basically unpaid slave labor with the output entirely benefiting the officers who ran them. Many of the officers pillaged or ran smuggling operations to fund their troops and enrich themselves from their position.
@SeriousTrivia thank you for the explanation and for the fantastic video as always. Does the system receive further reform as Sun Quan is crowned emperor? Wu does always have a manpower problem but I feel like from what you've previously outlined that Sun Quan never breaks away from this retinue system, with retinues just growing and being inherited as his power base is cemented. This leaves him with the inherent instability and inconsistencies of officers being responsible for their own bands and looking out for themselves. But it could also bring strength through decentralised local power vs. a centralised power. However, given this is at the time of the failure of the central Han government, it makes some sense that the people are exploring alternative forms of organisation.
I choked myself when I heard "Fearing his mother-in-law's wrath, Deng Dang immediately reported him". That was hilarious.
Asian Mother Syndrome existed already back then.
Yuan xiong meeting lü meng: "why do he reminded me of someone?"
Yuan xiong: *flashback when sun ce rampage and screaming at ze rong camp*
Lü ‘Died Under Mysterious Circumstances’ Meng
7:38 Truly one of the Yuan Shu moments of all time
I love historical content from this channel

Fun fact: in Dynasty Warriors 4 Sun Jian says this same quote 1:47
"You must enter the Tigers den if you wish to catch a Tiger."

Looking forward to this one! Please don't be biased against LM, he acted in the interest of his kingdom (which is not Shu nor the romance fan base)
Hell yeah I love Lu Meng

@@SeriousTrivia damn, that means they also become pirates then
@@SeriousTrivia Oh, that family centric dynamic just got a whole different meaning.
