You should also react to this performed live, at Tampere. It is just as good as the official video, which you are seeing here. Note who the singer is in this one.

As others already have said - Tampere 2015 version is the ultimate must see experience.
But still an excellent reaction 👍🤘

FYI, Tuomas only wrote the lyrics on this one. Marko composed the music for The Islander. Also, Nightwish was founded in 1996, not in 2003. It's always so nice to get your facts right.

Nightwish has been around since 1997. This song is from their sixth album, not one of the first songs. However Tuomas and guitar player Emppu started the band with an acoustic "campfire" style in their mind. The boys knew Tarja, the original singer, from the same music school, but they haven't heard her singing at all. They asked her to joint the band, and her style came as a total surprise. That was one key factor for Nightwish to create their operatic and symphonic style.

Choose a singer to capture the essence of 28 years? WHY? Every singer was an important part of this beautiful journey❣️❣️❣️
What voice do I like the most? Floor❣️

Shame. When I saw the song title assumed it would be live version at Tampere 2015. Nice video though.

If you like this, you will probably like the group Auri - this is a folkier group formed of Tuomas, Troy and Tuomas's wife Johanna. I suggest the track Pearl Diving, there is an official lyric video on UA-cam.

Enjoyed your reaction. The music video is good but the live performance from Tampere with Floor providing backing vocals is even more fantastic. I just find Anette's backing vocals here a little thin in comparison. Music was written by Marko for his band Tarot but decided it wasn't a good fit and brought it to Nightiwish. Tuomas added the lyrics to create this masterpiece.
Band was founded in 1996. Tuomas wrote most of the music for their first album while doing his mandatory military service in the Finnish Army. Luckily he ended up in the Finnish Army band playing the clarinet. Their first album, Angels Fall First, was originally supposed to be a demo recording to get them a label deal but the record company liked the demo so much the just released it as is instead of re-recording it. Fun fact, Tuomas actually sings on a couple of the tracks which he has never done again as he doesn't think he is a good enough singer. Checkout their first music video for the song The Carpenter to hear Tuomas sing. ua-cam.com/video/Z4A5HwMOfW8/v-deo.htmlsi=ReY1rP45nTOJtYYK. Floor and Troy singa live version in 2018 in Buenos Aries as part of their Decades tour which featured older songs from their catalog. A double reaction would be fantastic.
For the most part I prefer Floor but there are songs where I prefer Tarja or Anette's performances the same or more. For Tarja the songs The Siren, Planet Hell, and Bless the Child jump out. For Anette, the music video for Amaranthe or Slow Love Slow live. I will also echo Tuomas, Troy, and Johana's side project Auri. Atmospheric, folky mood music and Johana has one of the prettiest voices. My favorites are Desert Flower, The Space Between, and The Valley.

Marko and Tuomas composed this song. I agree with your commentary. Tuomas compsoes beyond metal. He tells stories and the soundscape sets the stage. You can hear Tuomas' love for Celtic inspired music. All three are wonderful in their own unique style. Me, I am a huge Floor fan.
Hear is the official story of how it started.
‍It’s July, 1996. A hidden campfire looms on the island in the middle of Lake Pyhäjärvi, Kitee. Then at midnight, something happens that has far-reaching consequences. Tuomas Holopainen has an idea of a solo project that would play atmospheric “mood music.”
The idea quickly crystallises: the sound would include acoustic guitars, flutes, strings, piano - and female vocals. Guitarist Erno “Emppu” Vuorinen and vocalist Tarja Turunen soon join the project.
    1997: RECORD DEAL
Holopainen’s embryonic idea takes form in just a few months, and the first Nightwish demo is completed in early 1997. Outsiders’ opinions are reservedly positive, and the seeds sown during the summer start sprouting during the freezing winter of Karelia.
New dimensions soon appear in the band’s music: Vuorinen changes from acoustic to electric guitar, and Jukka Nevalainen joins as the drummer. A few weeks of furious practise culminate in a studio demo recorded in April, featuring seven songs by the new line-up.
The songs attract the attention of Spinefarm Records, and the band is offered a deal. During the summer, Nightwish record four more songs, and their debut album Angels Fall First is released in November. The album rises to number 31 on the Finnish charts, while the single, “The Carpenter” has already made it to Top Ten.
Wrapping up a year of surprisingly hectic action, Nightwish play their debut gig on New Year’s eve. Over 400 people show up at Huvikeskus, Kitee, and the band is jumpy as hell, but the concert surpasses all expectations.

The reason why Marko was more than a bassist in the Nightwish. Something extra to also notice that Emppu does never play the guitar in While Your Lips Are Still Red - those members of fab four no not consider that as the Nightwish's song...and Emppu has principles to not interfere for something that he is not supposed to interfere.

Nightwish. So hot, the campfire sits around them! Nightwish Army, Blue Mountains Corps, Australia. 🇦🇺 🤘 Another vote for Tampere Live version. p.s. Marko, who sang this, wrote it with Tuomas. I miss Marko in Nightwish! Tuomas is the Metal Mozart but Marko is the original Metal Viking. Tuomas also sang backing on this studio version!

Thanks for sharing your reaction to this beautiful song about an old man that has lost everybody he ever loved & commits a suicide by drowning himself into the sea. However, this live performance would have been an even better choice: NIGHTWISH - The Islander (LIVE AT TAMPERE).

You say you forgot Anette, but she sings backing in this very video! Along with others here, I also recommend the Tampere live version. It's more paired down, almost accoustic in sound. I like both for different reasons. Love this atmospheric video, although i couldn't actually see it here. I guess you had copyright issues? Never mind, the sound quality was good.

There is a really good "Making Of" video documentary for this music video. It was shot at a difficult location with added graphics. They show how the whole process went with interviews with the band members, old seaman actor, crew, and graphics team if you are interested in the behind the scenes stuff.

the correct answer to which singer is the MOST Nightwish? Is all 3, that's is the STORY that is Nightwish, Tarja, Annette, and Floor make the story... they would be different now if all that, didn't happen.

  • @Zandman26
    @Zandman26 28 днів тому +1

If it wasn't for Tarja the answer would be easy.
But both Floor and Tarja have been essential for the Nightwish sound.
The Anette period was what made me loose intresst in the band for a long time.
And the reason for that was that the complexity of the sound disappeared during this era. Floor added complexity back to that era by enhancing songs like the Islander and Storytime for example.

Why don't you both react to the Nightwish movie Imaginaerum. Tarja was the original vision a school friend of Tuomas and piano taught by Tuomas mother Tarja was the idea of dramatic Opera music along with metal and Orchestra. After the supposed Diva issues and the removal of Tarja Anette stepped up, Her style was a bit of Pop/Rock Marko did once comment he had to quiten his vocals for her as she wasn't a very loud/Powerful singer. Floor has this ability to sing any style Punk, Rock, Classical/Opera Metal Pop etc. I do feel she is now the right choice for Nightwish but Tarja was the original concept and what Nightwish was meant to be about the vision. Floor fits in because Nightwish had evolved and that means changing styles and formula of musici

As much as i like Floor, it is still Tarja.
Just because i've listened to this band from the end of 90s, this band was essential gateway to entire metal genre, that showed me that it was more than angry corpse painted men unintelligible growling in the Norwegian forest to a repeatable guitar riffs. I've heard that people who had no knowledge of Nightwish compared this band to Evanescence, well, for me it was like Evanescence copied the formula but made it like more pop, more casual. We even used to call a lots of female fronted sympho-metal bands as nightwish clones. Tuomas wasn't at his peak performance as a composer, but real operatic vocal was the thing that made Nightwish stand above others. Thats why lots of people hated (and i mean HATED) Anette, not because she was a bad singer, but because with her Nightwish became just another Nightwish clone:)
To this day i have some of my metalhead friends who outright refuse to give Floor a chance , since for them Nightwish ended with Tarja departure
