  • In this episode I took the chance of having the band Bed Legs recording in my studio, and did an episode on their guitar player's amp: the Ampeg Rocket Reverb.
I've been wishing to test drive one for a long time and when the opportunity came I just grabed it.

Ampeg as guitar amps has been kind of a secret for a long time. If I knew about these sooner, you could pick up one for dirt cheap. Now the word is out and prices go up. I think we
are all in the school of buying a Fender, Marshall, or Meas Boogie. Nothing wrong with that except we overlook how great Ampeg really is also. Some guitarist buy the old vintage bass
heads and rock out on them too. Just because it says bass amp you can still play guitar on it. They take pedals well also. The Stones toured and in-studio used Ampegs in the 70's.
They do have their own sound. Mick Taylor one of my favorite Stones guitar players got all the cool sounds from them. Thanks, Budda for the video, I want an Ampeg now lol.

I've played a friends Ampeg 212 Rocketreveb at a good loud volume. 50 Watts. Its got girth. Its a 2x12 and it seems to play between a AC30 and a Fender Twin. Sounds great cranked and clean as you heard. Probably an awesome pedal platform. I've seen them used for about $400. Quite a bargain for the Amp you are getting. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet, is because it is so beastly!

I bought my 1998 Ampeg R212R one one month ago. If you give Ampeg your serial number they respond by the next day and can give you all of th info you need.
I have turned it up to 8 on the lower channels. With 25' of cord through a strat. W/ SSH Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates playing in another room.
It was ear splitting. But still clean. I'm not quite ready for the high channels and vol. 11.
These amps were designed for classical player to amplify but stay clean. I had a 1974 Fender Twin Reverb 100w. This might be louder.
Or I'm getting old. My Rick 360 / 6 does everything I bought it for through this amp.

Still owning one, with a fitting flightcase. Great amp, allthough i'm going to sell it(too much great tubeamps like Rivera,THC Sunset, Burriss). Also owned a Ampeg J 12R and a SJ 12R,also great amps.
This SJ12R had an orange Fender labelled JBL,which is agreat update in sound to this amp,but the weight is getting heavy. Also changed the powertubes to a pair of TAD pentode Tone Bones and preamp tubes from ECC 83 to EEC 82/12AU7's(GE ) and that was a huge progress in sound and volume:for livingroom usage it had become so much better.

Were they the stock tue s in there? I just bought a used one and it had very, very much mids with humbuckers. Have been trying to dial it in. Notice that the drive channel accents different freq for the mid and treble when engaged, which is a good idea.
Anyway, thanks for the video, I hadn’t thought to raise the bass as much as you have and made it sound good. Will try that.

These amps have a good reputation for sound. Supposed to have an excellent clean. I own a 1995 first year, it has el34. After that they moved to 6l6gc. Mine is shrill sounding. Very bright. Not good. The amp lacks warmth. When I saw your video, that amp is the same sound as mine , very shrill , no bass. Eq controls effect it but not enough. There is no way that amp was sold new sounding that bad. Was wondering if it was ever fixed. Was wondering if it was the el34 version.

I believe there is something wrong with that one and mine also because people love the sound of these but the sound you were getting was way to bright and could not be eqed out. On mine the EQ does very little, especially the bass. I dont think that one or mine was operating properly.

@@BuddaGuedes No disrespect intended, but when you started testing the amp, you turned off ALL of the eq. I don't think anything would sound good like that. I would think a more logical approach would be to flatten the eq at 50% across-the-board. Then dial in, adding or subtracting from there.
I just bought one of these amps and I think it is a strong competition for a Fender Twin. You got some great sounds out of it!

    • @TheHumppaidiootti
      @TheHumppaidiootti 3 роки тому +1

@@pics0265 Fender amps have flat eq when both bass and treble are zeroed, at that point mid controll acts more as a volume control. There is not really any right way to start dialing eq on amp, especially when tone stack type is unknown. Marshall is about flat when middle is full, treble at zero and bass is at 1. Hiwatt is as flat as it can get when treble and middle are 0 and bass is 2. Ampeg has Baxandall type tone stack, so with this amp you relly should start with treble and bass at 5, it is flat setting unlike with other guitar amps

Ampeg did experience a resurgence in the States, but many are still scared of all tube amps , and inclined towards either big 3, or higher gain.
Mojo is the word; you can't beat them once familiar with the set up and controls. It can take some fussing if you're used to Fender. The 50 bass heads are outstanding for guitar, but I would avoid stock speakers and cabs. The only Trem and Verb that beats Fender, hands down.
They do run a little heavy, and the combos are brutal on old men on the stairs.

      Budda Guedes
I have the same amp, but the single twelve inch speaker combo version(reverberocket R12R). It’s a reissue from the ninetees, nice amp, but not as cool as the vintage ones.
If I’m not mistaken, this 90’s reissue are from when Crate Industries bought the Ampeg factory. This amps were made in the USA, though, snd the quality is fine, but this are not hand made-point to point holy grail amps as the 60’s era original reverberockets!!
The stock speaker is an eminece, the same eminence legend ‘gold label’ used in most stock fenders for the last 20 years...but with a simple sticker with the Ampeg logo.
      Sounds quite cool, btw.
Mine cames with 6L6 tubes, but the first versions of the reissues had EL34.
This version with 2 speakers was used and abused by Matthew Followill, the lead guitar from the Kings of Leon.
I would say this amp, the 6L6 version, is to me kinda like a hot rod deluxe in a lot of things, but with better reverb (awesome, indeed) and, maybe a brighter, 50’s sound...
      Rock’n’roll approved beast!!
