Thanks for the video. I needed to do the same repair myself for the same reasons. As mechanically inclined as I am, it is good to see a video from someone who has gone down that path which gives me the confidence to move forward without second guessing myself. That is what UA-cam should be about. Helping others. Good job!
Thanks for the video. I'm going to be doing this on mine this weekend and I have the same unit. My pilot light would burn and burner would fire up but would only stay lit maybe 30 seconds. New thermocouple didn't work.
Thanks for the video. I'll be doing mine tomorrow. It was burning fine but we had to evacuate midweek for a wildfire. Went to restart everything and nope, no pilot light.
Thanks. Have the same problem and chalked it up to the thermocouple. WRONG! Need to order a replacement. Thanks for the part number and the Ebay search term. Note to all: The original Atwood p/n 91601 was obsoleted and superseded by p/n 91602. The Robertshaw 28-A38-005 (R103RVTS-LPP) gas valve is the equivalent to the Atwood 91602. As seen in the video the Robertshaw equivalent to the Atwood 91602, and the Atwood 91602, are not a direct replacement for the Atwood 91601; and some minor tweaking will be necessary.
The Atwood Gas Control Valve shown is no longer produced. Dometic bought Atwood and canceled all production forcing people to buy a new Dometic water heater. Sigh. However, IF you are able to find a Robertshaw 110-503 (Robertshaw Uniline, Brownsville, TX 951-734-2600), it will indeed fit. They can direct you to a reseller or maybe you can order directly from them if you have a business. I have also seen adverts for the 110-503 from Grainger (most expensive - but still much less than a new water heater). You will need a 1/2" reducer bushing to use your same inlet fitting. The only other simple mod needed is to enlarge the hole for the inlet gas line so it will easily mate with the fitting in the 110-503. I did this with a rat tail file in about 5 minutes. Hope this helps.
I'm going to assume that you did not know to not use Teflon tape in a gas line application. You need to use pipe dope that is certified for gas line applications.
i would like to know what you replaced the 45 with that connects the gas because the new thermostat does not have the same size thread connection as the old 45.
Hey how ya doing? I'm fron Canada, need these valve for my camper, but can not find a model number or proper replacement, do you have a source for this valve you could share with me?
when you installed the new gas controler i did not see you remove the little rubber cover from the end of the tempeture probe. so that stays on in the water tank. i would think they may come loose and block your water flow from the tank. this video was very good im in the same boat having to replace mine and not paying someone else 100 dollars to do it.
The new valve had instruction NOT to remove the sleeve. I wanted to but decided that if they wanted it left on, then i probably should leave it on....prevents build up maybe?
and i am in need now i have a 75 year old living in a trailer without hot water for a week now and we just went through a hurricane making things worse. i thought i would be able to simply fix it in a few minutes today until i ran into this problem.
Great video this sounds like a stupid question but, there is a plastic band at the themocoupler fitting. Does that get removed? Not sure to take off or leave on. Thanks, I also know this vid is over 4 years old but if anyone can help please do.
@@hgffrank no, that I kept, there like a blue plastic tie band that runs across where the fitting of the themocoupler goes into, not sure if it stays or goes.
Thanks! Redoing a 1986 Coachman and want to rebuild the water heater. This is exactly what I needed!

Thank you so much! I am new to campers and appreciate your help.

Great video. Straight forward. I have same heater. Will be repair before next trip
Good video. Simple and to the point. GOD bless
Thanks for your video sir

@@joshualukehart2295 On my camper the gas line was copper tubing. Adapting from a different size thread should not be very difficult.
Can’t get it to come out. I have everything off of it. Counter clockwise. Don’t wanna go. Any suggestions?
Soak with penetration oil. Propane torch. Keep a 🧯 on hand. That foam insulation will burn

Unfortunately not, sorry. The manufacturer decided to discontinue the part to force people to buy entirely new water heaters 😭
Can you provide replacement gas control valve resource to purchase?

What about that plastic sheath that is around the sensor on the valve. Do you take that off? It looks like you left yours on.
DO NOT remove it
Nuff said thank you!

Did you buy a regular thermostat from Lowe's or a store similar or buy one meant for propane? Was there an orifice to change?
I ordered from an online RV parts dealer.

The plastic sleeve that fits over the end that goes into the tank? That stays on.

@@randybrawdy3050 without seeing it I can't be 100%, but if it's on the pipe fitting itself, then it's most likely thread sealant. Leave it on.
@@randybrawdy3050 At the 3:27 Mark on the video you can see the thread sealer I added to mine.
Where did you get the part at?
Ebay. Do search for Robertshaw 28-A38-005 gas valve. 70.00. Other number on valve is; R103RVTS-LPP. You can zoom in on valve tag to verify.
@@oldmantech5399 Thank you sooooo much for that part # equivalent. Saves me about ~$35.
I searched on the p/n in the manual which is 91601.
Great video thank you.
