I followed the instructions to the letter........DO NOT spray detailer on your butyl tape. The tape absolutely will not stick after you do that even after leaving it out in the direct sun to "dry" the detailer off! About 80% of my glass will not stick now. I'm going to have to start completely over.
Helpful video, thank you! Question, im working on a first generation montecarlo 72, and im wanting to R&R my front and rear windshields. Is there a seal for that make as well? I see other videos and all use silicone, im wondering if I can use a seal as well?.. Thank you!
Mark I have a question...getting ready to install a 69 Elco windshield. Using the detailer spray, will that cause the bond between the glass and tape, not to adhere to the glass surface?? I understand...you squeeze the detailer out, but will there still be a very thin film between the seal ?? GREAT VEDIO....
Mark Boice Hello Marrk I enjoyed your video I have a 71 Chevelle that I’m gonna do the windshield and back glass what is the detailer spray made of is it just soap and water or is it a special solution that you buy from the auto parts store. Thank you
Hi Mark. I will need front and rear glass installed on my 81 Camaro. The shop wants to install a "dam" (I think for no squeeze out towards the inside of the car), and then use a urathane glue of some sort like newer cars. Should I only use butle tape and no glue?
@@theshark2804 I did more research, and asked the tech. The "dam" creates a finished edge and a gap, to whatever the thickness you need is (depending on the car and the outside trim you use), then the glue is applied. The glass is heavy, so all the glue will squeeze out. The dam prevents the squeeze out. This is the best method and that's what I'll be going with
@@jakefriesenjake yeah. I have the glue and primer already. Im waiting on my new glass now for my 73 nova. Hopefully i can get some good help to get this this in asap.
So I spray the actual channel with the detailer, the metal. Then I put the tape on the metal over the detailer? Do I spray the window with detailer before I put it on the tape? Or is the metal before the tape the only thing I spray?
Mark...totally agree with your statement about how sloppy the caulking looks. Many installers will not use Butyl Tape. Old timers still use the tape. For my 69 Elco, I will use the 3/8" tape. Thanks for the education...great video....
I took his advice and now my sealer won't stick to my windshield. Adhered fine to the body of the car (dry side) but won't stick to the glass now. I'm very upset.
@@dougr.6734 You should be upset. Common sense says the detailer or any other solution will leave a film of residue between the seal and the windshield preventing adhesion. The only thing that might work is straight water which will evaporate over time and leave no residue.
Glass guy here. Don’t use any chemicals. Don’t handle the glass with bare hands. Oil and chemicals are your enemy. Use gloves and clean the glass extremely good.

I came to learn about the windshield seal for my firebird, I stayed for the Camaro. Great ruby red color.
What can I use for spray/detail cleaner?
Mark, your expertise has been invaluable for me! Thank you for helping me get my glass set up perfectly on my 1st gen!
Excellent video on installing the front glass on the first gen bird!
Thanks again for a great video and all the detail to help us beginners. lol
Thanks again for the info.. (is there a part # for the seal you used?) That is one nice looking car.
Does a 73 Firebird follow the same routine.

Great question! The detailer will dry out very quickly when the glass gets hot in the sun.

I can’t find the answer to this. I have the glue. But the tape seem easier

You can spray an entire area as required to get the glass to seal.
Hi Mark,
Could you tell me which MEGUIARS detailer are you using? Thanks :)
Did you use 3/8" or 5/16" rope on the windshield? And what type of detailer, just like an Armor All??
Great Question! We use 3/8 rope with Meguires detailer. Works the best! Have a Clear Day!
Thanks a lot Mark!! Great videos by the way!!
@@MrScaredshiftless do you know what size I would want to use for my 1974 nova for the windshield and the rear windshield? great video subscribed!!

I can not think of anything dumber than to spray any sort of fluid on the sealer.

Where can I purchase this sealer rope? Thanx
Janann Anderson Class is Indutries carriers it. However most glass shops should be able to get it. I have seen it on eBay also.

Hello Marck,
Hey, What color is that Camaro?
looks awesome!
Not Sure! Customer owned.
Great video 😊 Do you use butyl primer or no primer.
Straight to a clean surface.
Mark no esta en casa!!!
And it's called butyl tape. Usually 5/16"
Super Bitchin' Mark!
well you do
A real glass guy would NEVER set a windshield with silicone anyway. Have you ever done this before?
