    What a lovely interview! It's one of the nicest coach-trainee relationships there is in figure skating ✨Stéphane ✨Shoma. I didn't know Shoma's French could be better than his English 😅, that face at the end tho... 😂.
    (btw I still don't know why the name hasn't been changed to artistic skating in English as well 🤔)
    Olympic channel, thank you for giving us new memories

    • @luablau

      I think it's funny/weird that the similar roller skating sport IS called artistic skating and they STILL have figure tests!

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 роки тому +1

      The sport of figure skating is named after the compulsory figures which use to be in competition.

    • @Karen0299
      @Karen0299 2 роки тому

      @@RaymondHng Yes, tracing figures used to be essential in its origins, but it has not been evaluated for a long time now.
      The thing is, my native language is Spanish and when I watch competitions with the title figure skating, I don't even think about the name, I just remembered about the artistic when listening to Stéphane, when I watch transmissions with the Spanish title "patinaje artístico" (I think it used to be called ice skating / patinaje sobre hielo in Spanish before 🤔 but not sure) and when I notice that some programs don't look very artistic (I know it's subjective), that's when I think that maybe the name influences the skaters when considering the importance they give to this part, not all of them ofc. Just a thought.☺️

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 роки тому

      @@Karen0299
      In Italian, the sport is _Pattinaggio di figura_
      In Korean, the sport is 피겨스케이팅 (pigyeoseukeiting)
      In Chinese, the sport is 花式滑冰.
      花 flower
      式 mode
      (花式=fancy)
      滑 slide
      冰 ice
      The international governing body of the competitive sport is the International Skating Union, so they control the name of the sport. When it comes to changing names or terminology, the organization is rather slow in making such changes. For 129 years since the establishment of the ISU, women skaters were referred to as "ladies" in ISU regulations and communications. It wasn't until the 2021-22 season, that they were referred to as women.

    • @Karen0299
      @Karen0299 2 роки тому

      @@RaymondHng In Italian it was also called pattinaggio artistico but not so much anymore bc of the popularity of figure skating. I think in Spanish it was also called patinaje de figuras? (I don't remember if that's what it was called during Vancouver 2010). I know the ISU takes a long time to make changes, and if that's what it's called in the countries that skate the most, the change is less likely to happen, so when I said I didn't know why it hadn't been changed yet it was an ok I get it but I don't get it, more like a phrase of resignation. The name thing wasn't the most important thing for me in the video but the nice interaction between Shoma and Stéphane, so it's unnecessary to keep talking about it, but thanks anyway for the information, it wasn't a real question but i know that you just wanted to give an answer, it can be useful for new fans.
