To be honest, whenever I go get guinea pig supplies (at the pet store) for and I pass the guinea pig cage my only thought is... *I need another guinea pig*
I hate how a lot of people when they first see a rat skinny pig or mice the first thing they say is "Look at that ugly thing" when they all are awesome creatures and they deserve more respect
storytime: My parents got guinea pigs for my 10 year old sister over two years ago. They didn't do their research, didn't buy the right cages and refuse to take them to the vet because of the money issues they have (and because they are in a cult and believe that taking animals to the vet is a sin, but that's a whole another story). I'm a student, I live on my own and I have to see them weekly to do basic health checks and often cage cleaning. I saved money to take one of them to the vet (walking problems) behind my parents back and paid for a new cage for them since the one they have is waaay too small and occasionally have to buy them food since my parents don't have the money for it... I don't know I just needed to rant, because my parents don't see a problem and I feel like I have to take responsibility for them, because they didn't think their decision through. I just wish people would see that taking a pet is a big commitment and it requires money, knowledge, dedication and love. Sorry I just needed to rant, please take having guinea pigs seriously...
That kinda happens to me but I’m the 10 year old. So I have been dealing with loneliness and like I had no friends. So I got a boy pig with a small cage it was not the smallest but neither the biggest. He dies half a year later because he got old. (4,5 years) After 3 months I got a hamster. He is now 1,5 years. But he weren’t awake or that fun so I got piggies again. They later died of sickness. But not at once so I got my pig Maya. When the other pig died I got Ally. After 3 months I got Rosemary and again a few months Laura. So I had 4 guinea pigs at once. Btw when I got Rosemary me and my dad build a cage for them cuz I weren’t happy bout the size. The cage is 3 meters times 1,5 meter. Turns out Maya was aggressive against Ally, Ally started to bleed 2 times when I finally separated them. Maya got to a nice boy who just lost a pig. (The cage setup was A M A Z I N G) After a year I still have the 3 piggies, the cage and even got 3 more hamsters! Yes I’ve done research. They are getting litter boxes trained so their cage is putted into 2. They’re foods are getting weighted and measured, unlimited farm hay and half hemp half fleece bedding. Lots of toys, hides and foods. Ally is fully tame and can be petted in the cage and even lays down on me!!!

I usually do wellness checks once a week when I clean their cage. Eyes, ears, nose, feetsies, tummy and coat. Keeps me informed. When my male had his neuter I checked his incision daily as I cleaned his cage. The vet was impressed that when it was then end of the healing period I caught some of the suture coming out lol.

My guinea pig died 3 years ago her name was Coco. She was a really pretty dark chocolate guinea pig with streaks of gold in her fur. One time she stopped eating, she started to loose all of her hair. Skipping to three months later, I went to bed that night and when i got up i looked around in her cage and she wasn’t there. So i asked my dad and hesaid that she was sitting on his lap when he heard her last breath i walked in my room and lied on my bed with water constantly running down my checks and all through my neck. i would do anything to see her again, to this day when ever i think her i start to tear up.
my guinea pig had a uri, we didnt have money to take her to the vet but eventually we did but during that time i tried taking care of her as best as possible and make her comfortable. She got antibiotics and shes doing perfect now so yay
Yup, sometimes its too late with guinea pigs. With one of my first guinea pigs, Wally, we didn't realize he was sick, and one day his stomach flipped and it was too late and we had to put him down at only 5 years old. we learned from that though, and now our 9 guinea pigs are living a happy, healthy life. And Wallys twin brother, Blue, live a long happy healthy life and died peacefully in our arms at the age of 7 1/2 years old.
Tysm. My guinea pig died yesterday and I was confused on how he died. By watching this i found put he had an upper respiratory infection.. Now I can avoid another loss. Thank you for this information. Keep posting you’re videos are helpful.
I have a great vet, who gave me a discount when we had a case of mange-mites. (3 piggies) and they have always been able to help us if we need to split up the bill or wait for the 1st of the month to pay. Always talk to your vet about payment options :)

Last summer my guinea pig that was just under 2 years old got sick. I took it to the vet right away and got some baytril. It got better for 2 days and then it got worse fast and it died. I don't know what happened. The other guinea pig that was in the same cage didn't get sick at all. That made me realize sometimes it's just out of your control. Sometimes there's nothing you can do. It was young, it was outside every day, I kept it's cage clean, I got it medical attention right away yet it still died. Before that I had 3 other guinea pigs, one lived 6 years and the other two lived 7 years.

Hello, thanks for all your videos, always very helpful! I just wanted to add something for this one. As guinea pigs hide they illnesses first, it is often very late when they show some signs. So the best way to spot a problem early so that they can be treated quickly is the weekly weight check! Any sudden loss of weight or slow constant decrease means that a visit to you vet is required. I hope it helps others 🙂
I have saved several guinea pigs from bloat, by giving them a few drops of any edible vegetable oil, that you have on hand. Then immerse them in warm water, holding them upright. Whilst holding them, massage their tummies, until you see air bubbles pop out from their bottoms. You will see an immediate difference in your guinea pig. The relief from the pain is obvious.

Little Adventures, I appreciate how much you stress vet visits! It drives me insane when people tell me “it’s just a $35 rodent, it’s not worth it.” I would definitely suggest pet insurance though! I have 5 piggies, and it’s only $7 per pig and it’s great coverage. :)

Illnesses can be so hard to spot really, I've lost two of the sweetest guinea pigs from mites. I had a herd of 3 girls and first it was my Peruvian Annabelle, then my abyssinian Blanche. Whats crazy though is that the only survivor was my ridged back runt Mia whos had 3 babies and her friends being twice the size of her. I still have her and she's still the toughest and sassiest piggy I own :3
I had to get my guinea pig, Fred, put down last Thursday. He had his teeth growing through his lower jaw, which is very treatable with antibiotics, but because he obviously wasn't eating well, even with pain meds, and syringe feeding his body hasn't happy with it, causing his digestive system to stop, so we were given meds for that too, which he was barely responding to. He stayed at the vet for a day, and they found blood in his urine, and it turned out his pH levels had gone up a little tiny bit. Not the end of the world, but a few days later he hadn't made progress, so we gave them another urine sample, and his pH levels were way too high (pH is basically how much acid there is in your blood (correct me if I'm wrong, English is not my first language)). So we told to make sure he had soft food and hay in his cage of he wanted it, to give him twice as many pain meds as before, and water so he wouldn't die of dehydration. He was a fighter and held on for another 5 days. No animal should suffer so we went with the last option possible. I miss him so much, but he's not in pain anymore, which is the most important part. His herd is a little shaken up, but they'll be Okay. His brother has already taken over and his taking good care of the others :')

My typical vet visits cost $60, this includes a basic check up and nail trim. The last one cost around $93 because of the antibiotics. And my vet is one of the cheaper ones in my area!
My guniea pigs work with a ‘all for one and one for all’ mentality. I started feeding my guniea pigs a lot more hay after watching this. I also started giving my guniea pigs health checks I’m so glad we did because we picked up a potential illness.

Lots of great tips! The only thing I noticed was you said give probiotics while giving antibiotics. I have always read this is actually a waste of money and not healthy to do because the probiotics and antibiotics cancel each other out. In that case, for my dogs anyway, if we ever need to give antibiotics, we follow-through with those and then when those are out we follow up with probiotics :) BUT, I do not have a degree in biology, I have just heard this mentioned several times from nutritionists.
I really loved all the information, it was great. It was also kind of scary. That's why I have an emergency kit, always stocked with infant gas drops, critical care powder, different size syringes, antibiotic eye drops, eye lubrication gel, q tips, cotton balls, coconut oil, piggy safe shampoos, hair brushes, animal scissors, you name it! I also always interact with my piggies, so I can see how they're acting, walking, how their eyes look, I check over their furry potatoe bodies every few days, because I don't ever want to wake up to a piggy who's at death's door! So far, so good!
my guinea piggy, Levi has been scratching a lot and when he can't reach the spots he wants to scratch , he falls on his cage floor and starts shaking and having spasms while crying , the local vet told us that he has fungal infection on his skin and he needs treatment but I'm not sure if the spasms are a part of this, I really hope our little guy will be okay , he came home not many days ago and he's still very scared ,which will make it extra difficult to apply his treatment creams on him since he's pretty scared.

Our baby Cali passed from sickness. Coughing and sneezing and just sadness. She passed in my stepdads arms. It was quick and after she took her medicine. Her sister knew it was coming as she got really upset after we took Cali out to give her medicine. When she passed we took a moment to say a prayer and cry, then we brought in gwinie to say goodbye to her sister and we put Cali in a box with the hat she was in when she passed and the next day we took her to our new house and buried her in the backyard. I know where she is currently and she’s popcorning free on the rainbow bridge. It’s bringing tears to my eyes thinking about her but I know she’s much happier now. I hope she had a good life with us in the little bit of time she was with us. I miss her.
One of my babies died today, he was having many seizures (chasing tail-like, no ear issues, I didn’t think much of it at the time) and was extremely underweight, he had to be put down because when we took him to an emergency vet he couldn’t move and his breathing was extremely slow and light heartbeats. If only my dad listened to me that week before.
My family has spent close to $2000 USD on our Karmello. I am happy to say he is still with us and I don't regret anything. Family is family, simple, money is printed everyday.
I have two bunnys and the same things go more or less for them. One of my girls had a Abcess in her stomach close to her intestines, that was a really expensive surgery and sadly she did not make it due to infection. But since then we have a emergency fund just for the fluffballs. Now we have at least the money to take them to the vet at once when something isnt right. Its the best thing you can do as a pet owner, no matter what pet.
I have a question: I had two guinea pigs and one receantly died. My other guinea pig is 3 years old and we dont know if she would like a friend. Right now she plays with rabbit so we dont if she even needs another guinea pig.
Guinea pigs and rabbits are not able to communicate properly because they have different body language. They can be fine together (sometimes it works, sometimes not) but every animal needs at least one partner of it's own species. Please adopt a new guinea pig, the best would be an older one. I think your guinea pig would be very thankful
@@Ziiivva Maybe you could look online if somebody wants to sell his old one. That's very common where I live. Don't you have things like shelters where you can find guinea pigs? Or maybe a person you know has an older one and can give it to you. But if that isn't posdible I would try it with a younger one. But it's your pet and you have to make a decision for yourself😊
@@Ziiivva there's this website called Petfinder and you put in your area code and you can pick the age, gender, etc. of the guinea pig and it will let you know where they are and where you can adopt them from.
i’m getting my guineas back this month hopefully! we just got their cage in the mail! we got them at petco (big mistake) and they got it from the breeder (aka rodent mills) and they have been gone since jan.1st :( i miss them so much!!! but we are getting them back soon!! :)
Dusty hay can also cause a URI. One time we couldn't find our usual brand of hay so went for a random one, it was so dusty that I couldn't be in the same room whenever we took it out the bag. We thought it might be ok after a vigorous shake, but... One day, we woke up to one of our pigs, Peppa, having a nosebleed and sneezing blood all over everything (and everyone). Vet diagnosed a URI, and after plenty of medicine and going back to our previous hay, she's made a full recovery.
1 of my guinea pigs recently had mites and after researching a bit on mites, I realized why. Their cage is too small! My parents bought everything for me (and I love them for that), but they argued on the cage. So I planned on just buying the bigger cage after they bought the smaller one. Which I just did today! I’m finally getting my guinea pigs a bigger cage, and I’m so excited! (Btw my guinea pig with mites is doing amazing now! And is all better!)
My sister, when we were just kids, had owned a little albino female guinea pig. A couple decades ago we didn't have any of this information other than 'keep their cage clean, give them a hidey, and feed them pellets/romaine lettuce/carrots, and let them run about every so often.' My sister named her Tails. One day she stopped eating and moving around, and when we took her to the vet, we found out that she had a tumor the size of an orange. She died in my sister's arms later that evening. Watching these videos made me realize that, back then, my sister and I did not give her guinea pig the proper care she deserved. I feel guilty that I did not take better care of her, but then I realize back in the early 90s we didn't have the luxury of having all this information available. I still miss little Tails, her complaining, and petting her to the point where she was flat enough to be a foot long. If anything, keep an eye on the size and shape of your guinea pig's bodies. It could save their lives.
So when I first got my piggies I thought I could get away with a store bought cage I soon realized that wouldn’t work I have two piggies and I’m thinking about a two by four c and c cage I only have 50 inches by 27 inches to work with could I maybe be able to fit a two by four c and c and if not should I get the Midwest cage thank love the videos
I take my pigs to the vet once a year for a wellness check and any time I notice anything odd. Archie: 0, Edison: 2 Im a vet student so visits are $25 but expect to pay more for tests and things. If you can afford it, id recommend yearly checkups to catch problems before pigs start showing signs. 💜
i have two guinea pigs (nugget and blizzard) they are both short hair. Their cage is about 8 square feet but we take them out for floor time in their pen about 1-2 hours every second day. We feed them lots of veggies and they have loads of hay and some pellets. they drink from both a water bottle and a water bowl because one of them prefers the bowl and the other the water bottle. we are fleece lovers and they seem to love it too. they have two hidies in their home and lots of toys. i would love some advice/feedback! :)
I had a guinea named Cookie Dough and even though I had him for only 2 weeks I noticed he wasn't acting right. He just seemed different. For the 3rd week I kept bugging my mom to take him to the vet. She didn't listen till that weekend when he wouldn't eat move or do anything. Then she took him to the vet. And that night he passed away. She feels bad and now we are watching my piggies to see if they are healthy
My guinea pig got sick a few months ago and I looked up her symptoms and it was because of a lack of vitamin c and we fed her oranges and she recovered within an hour and has been fine ever since.
I bought my pig from a pet store and I only had her for 5 days and she ended up have a fungal on her neck and under her eye and I took her back to the store I bought her from so since it was less than 30 days since I bought her they took her to the vet and they been giving her medicine and after long 3 weeks I will be getting her back tomorrow on Monday hopefully

Could I have some advice from anyone, I just adopted two piggy boys, today. They are 5 months old and one of them when we got home started sneezing like crazy. Like I heard him sneeze once at the place and once in the car. When I got home I set up the cage and he started sneezing like so much. At first I removed about 95% of his bedding and he seems better but he still does sneeze a tiny bit. Is he allergic to hay/bedding or is he sick ( at the place he had only newspaper and fleece with a really small amount of timothy hay, like a few strands, for bedding)? His brother seems completely fine so I'm worried, what can be the issue.

Hello, thanks for all your videos, always very helpful! I just wanted to add something for this one. As guinea pigs hide they illnesses first, it is often very late when they show some signs. So the best way to spot a problem early so that they can be treated quickly is the weekly weight check! Any sudden loss of weight or slow constant decrease means that a visit to you vet is required. I hope it helps others 🙂

I have saved several guinea pigs from bloat, by giving them a few drops of any edible vegetable oil, that you have on hand.
Then immerse them in warm water, holding them upright.
Whilst holding them, massage their tummies, until you see air bubbles pop out from their bottoms.
You will see an immediate difference in your guinea pig. The relief from the pain is obvious.

I would definitely suggest pet insurance though! I have 5 piggies, and it’s only $7 per pig and it’s great coverage. :)

Illnesses can be so hard to spot really, I've lost two of the sweetest guinea pigs from mites. I had a herd of 3 girls and first it was my Peruvian Annabelle, then my abyssinian Blanche. Whats crazy though is that the only survivor was my ridged back runt Mia whos had 3 babies and her friends being twice the size of her. I still have her and she's still the toughest and sassiest piggy I own :3
I dont think they pass from mites, something else was probaly was going on.

We have five piggies. This video has helped me know how to keep them safe from illnesses!
I had to get my guinea pig, Fred, put down last Thursday. He had his teeth growing through his lower jaw, which is very treatable with antibiotics, but because he obviously wasn't eating well, even with pain meds, and syringe feeding his body hasn't happy with it, causing his digestive system to stop, so we were given meds for that too, which he was barely responding to. He stayed at the vet for a day, and they found blood in his urine, and it turned out his pH levels had gone up a little tiny bit. Not the end of the world, but a few days later he hadn't made progress, so we gave them another urine sample, and his pH levels were way too high (pH is basically how much acid there is in your blood (correct me if I'm wrong, English is not my first language)). So we told to make sure he had soft food and hay in his cage of he wanted it, to give him twice as many pain meds as before, and water so he wouldn't die of dehydration. He was a fighter and held on for another 5 days. No animal should suffer so we went with the last option possible. I miss him so much, but he's not in pain anymore, which is the most important part.
His herd is a little shaken up, but they'll be Okay. His brother has already taken over and his taking good care of the others :')

My typical vet visits cost $60, this includes a basic check up and nail trim. The last one cost around $93 because of the antibiotics. And my vet is one of the cheaper ones in my area!
Were do you go because in my area none of my vets do guinea pigs only cats and dogs
I feel you dude/dudette the cost of ours would be $53 for a visit. And probably near $100 for medicine.
My vet is 98 for a checkup and it drives me crazy

My guniea pigs work with a ‘all for one and one for all’ mentality. I started feeding my guniea pigs a lot more hay after watching this. I also started giving my guniea pigs health checks I’m so glad we did because we picked up a potential illness.

Lots of great tips! The only thing I noticed was you said give probiotics while giving antibiotics. I have always read this is actually a waste of money and not healthy to do because the probiotics and antibiotics cancel each other out. In that case, for my dogs anyway, if we ever need to give antibiotics, we follow-through with those and then when those are out we follow up with probiotics :) BUT, I do not have a degree in biology, I have just heard this mentioned several times from nutritionists.

I really loved all the information, it was great. It was also kind of scary. That's why I have an emergency kit, always stocked with infant gas drops, critical care powder, different size syringes, antibiotic eye drops, eye lubrication gel, q tips, cotton balls, coconut oil, piggy safe shampoos, hair brushes, animal scissors, you name it! I also always interact with my piggies, so I can see how they're acting, walking, how their eyes look, I check over their furry potatoe bodies every few days, because I don't ever want to wake up to a piggy who's at death's door! So far, so good!
These are great tips! I'm getting a new guinea pig soon to blend in with my trio of boys and I'm so excited!

my guinea piggy, Levi has been scratching a lot and when he can't reach the spots he wants to scratch , he falls on his cage floor and starts shaking and having spasms while crying , the local vet told us that he has fungal infection on his skin and he needs treatment but I'm not sure if the spasms are a part of this, I really hope our little guy will be okay , he came home not many days ago and he's still very scared ,which will make it extra difficult to apply his treatment creams on him since he's pretty scared.
Yes, the spasms can be because fungal infections itch really badly! The cream should help and he'll be back to his old self

Our baby Cali passed from sickness. Coughing and sneezing and just sadness. She passed in my stepdads arms. It was quick and after she took her medicine. Her sister knew it was coming as she got really upset after we took Cali out to give her medicine. When she passed we took a moment to say a prayer and cry, then we brought in gwinie to say goodbye to her sister and we put Cali in a box with the hat she was in when she passed and the next day we took her to our new house and buried her in the backyard. I know where she is currently and she’s popcorning free on the rainbow bridge. It’s bringing tears to my eyes thinking about her but I know she’s much happier now. I hope she had a good life with us in the little bit of time she was with us. I miss her.
One of my babies died today, he was having many seizures (chasing tail-like, no ear issues, I didn’t think much of it at the time) and was extremely underweight, he had to be put down because when we took him to an emergency vet he couldn’t move and his breathing was extremely slow and light heartbeats.
If only my dad listened to me that week before.
My family has spent close to $2000 USD on our Karmello. I am happy to say he is still with us and I don't regret anything. Family is family, simple, money is printed everyday.

Parsley blocks or bowls, grain bars (made for guinea pigs) and edible wooden toys are all great for their teeth that help stop them growing too much
I have two bunnys and the same things go more or less for them. One of my girls had a Abcess in her stomach close to her intestines, that was a really expensive surgery and sadly she did not make it due to infection. But since then we have a emergency fund just for the fluffballs. Now we have at least the money to take them to the vet at once when something isnt right.
Its the best thing you can do as a pet owner, no matter what pet.
I have a question:
I had two guinea pigs and one receantly died. My other guinea pig is 3 years old and we dont know if she would like a friend. Right now she plays with rabbit so we dont if she even needs another guinea pig.
Guinea pigs and rabbits are not able to communicate properly because they have different body language. They can be fine together (sometimes it works, sometimes not) but every animal needs at least one partner of it's own species. Please adopt a new guinea pig, the best would be an older one. I think your guinea pig would be very thankful

@@Ziiivva Maybe you could look online if somebody wants to sell his old one. That's very common where I live. Don't you have things like shelters where you can find guinea pigs? Or maybe a person you know has an older one and can give it to you. But if that isn't posdible I would try it with a younger one. But it's your pet and you have to make a decision for yourself😊

@@Ziiivva there's this website called Petfinder and you put in your area code and you can pick the age, gender, etc. of the guinea pig and it will let you know where they are and where you can adopt them from.

i’m getting my guineas back this month hopefully! we just got their cage in the mail! we got them at petco (big mistake) and they got it from the breeder (aka rodent mills) and they have been gone since jan.1st :(

Dusty hay can also cause a URI.
One time we couldn't find our usual brand of hay so went for a random one, it was so dusty that I couldn't be in the same room whenever we took it out the bag. We thought it might be ok after a vigorous shake, but...
One day, we woke up to one of our pigs, Peppa, having a nosebleed and sneezing blood all over everything (and everyone). Vet diagnosed a URI, and after plenty of medicine and going back to our previous hay, she's made a full recovery.
1 of my guinea pigs recently had mites and after researching a bit on mites, I realized why. Their cage is too small! My parents bought everything for me (and I love them for that), but they argued on the cage. So I planned on just buying the bigger cage after they bought the smaller one. Which I just did today! I’m finally getting my guinea pigs a bigger cage, and I’m so excited! (Btw my guinea pig with mites is doing amazing now! And is all better!)
My sister, when we were just kids, had owned a little albino female guinea pig. A couple decades ago we didn't have any of this information other than 'keep their cage clean, give them a hidey, and feed them pellets/romaine lettuce/carrots, and let them run about every so often.' My sister named her Tails. One day she stopped eating and moving around, and when we took her to the vet, we found out that she had a tumor the size of an orange. She died in my sister's arms later that evening.
Watching these videos made me realize that, back then, my sister and I did not give her guinea pig the proper care she deserved. I feel guilty that I did not take better care of her, but then I realize back in the early 90s we didn't have the luxury of having all this information available. I still miss little Tails, her complaining, and petting her to the point where she was flat enough to be a foot long.
If anything, keep an eye on the size and shape of your guinea pig's bodies. It could save their lives.

So when I first got my piggies I thought I could get away with a store bought cage I soon realized that wouldn’t work I have two piggies and I’m thinking about a two by four c and c cage I only have 50 inches by 27 inches to work with could I maybe be able to fit a two by four c and c and if not should I get the Midwest cage thank love the videos

I take my pigs to the vet once a year for a wellness check and any time I notice anything odd. Archie: 0, Edison: 2 Im a vet student so visits are $25 but expect to pay more for tests and things.
If you can afford it, id recommend yearly checkups to catch problems before pigs start showing signs. 💜

i have two guinea pigs (nugget and blizzard) they are both short hair. Their cage is about 8 square feet but we take them out for floor time in their pen about 1-2 hours every second day. We feed them lots of veggies and they have loads of hay and some pellets. they drink from both a water bottle and a water bowl because one of them prefers the bowl and the other the water bottle. we are fleece lovers and they seem to love it too. they have two hidies in their home and lots of toys. i would love some advice/feedback! :)
I had a guinea named Cookie Dough and even though I had him for only 2 weeks I noticed he wasn't acting right. He just seemed different. For the 3rd week I kept bugging my mom to take him to the vet. She didn't listen till that weekend when he wouldn't eat move or do anything. Then she took him to the vet. And that night he passed away. She feels bad and now we are watching my piggies to see if they are healthy

My guinea pig got sick a few months ago and I looked up her symptoms and it was because of a lack of vitamin c and we fed her oranges and she recovered within an hour and has been fine ever since.

I bought my pig from a pet store and I only had her for 5 days and she ended up have a fungal on her neck and under her eye and I took her back to the store I bought her from so since it was less than 30 days since I bought her they took her to the vet and they been giving her medicine and after long 3 weeks I will be getting her back tomorrow on Monday hopefully

Could I have some advice from anyone, I just adopted two piggy boys, today. They are 5 months old and one of them when we got home started sneezing like crazy. Like I heard him sneeze once at the place and once in the car. When I got home I set up the cage and he started sneezing like so much. At first I removed about 95% of his bedding and he seems better but he still does sneeze a tiny bit. Is he allergic to hay/bedding or is he sick ( at the place he had only newspaper and fleece with a really small amount of timothy hay, like a few strands, for bedding)? His brother seems completely fine so I'm worried, what can be the issue.
