- Welcome to How to design my garden where do I start, in this episode I am going to cover the renovation build episode this is an opportunity to take what type previous homeowners had and work it into your new garden vision!
With the cost-of-living crisis very much on everyone's mind currently some people are tackling projects themselves to save costs & this short series I will be giving advice on different garden types & where to start!
Firstly, designing a new garden from scratch involves the following steps:
1. **Assessment**: Evaluate the space, considering factors like sunlight exposure, soil quality, drainage, and existing features.
2. **Goals and Themes**: Determine your goals for the garden (e.g., relaxation, entertainment, food production) and any themes or styles you want to incorporate (e.g., formal, cottage, tropical).
3. **Layout**: Sketch a rough layout of the garden, including paths, seating areas, focal points, and different planting zones.
4. **Plant Selection**: Choose plants that thrive in your climate, soil type, and sunlight conditions. Consider a mix of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for visual interest and biodiversity.
5. **Hardscaping**: Plan any hardscape elements such as patios, decks, paths, fences, and water features. Ensure they complement the overall design and provide functionality.
6. **Accessories and Decor**: Add decorative elements like garden art, sculptures, furniture, and lighting to enhance the atmosphere and functionality of the space.
7. **Maintenance Considerations**: Factor in the time and effort required to maintain the garden and choose plants and features accordingly.
8. **Budgeting**: Determine a budget for your garden project, considering costs for plants, materials, labor, and ongoing maintenance.
9. **Implementation**: Once the design is finalized, begin implementing the plan, starting with any structural elements before moving on to planting.
10. **Regular Maintenance**: Keep up with routine maintenance tasks such as watering, weeding, pruning, and fertilizing to ensure the garden remains healthy and vibrant over time.
Additionally, you might also want to factor in
Sustainability: Choose eco-friendly practices and materials, such as native plants, rainwater harvesting, composting, and organic gardening methods.
&
Adaptation and Evolution: Be open to adjusting the design over time as plants grow, environmental conditions change, and your preferences evolve. A garden is a living, evolving space.
