  • Munich, GERMANY - 1991 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Free Skate - Nancy Kerrigan of the United States skated a solid program, which included an unplanned triple-triple combination, to finish in 3rd Place in the Free Skate. In doing so, that helped vaulted her up from 5th to win the Bronze Medal.

I think her so-called "frigid" look only enhanced her aura and gave her an air of elegance and regality. Her overall presentation was actually quite sophisticated, I must admit. On the technical side, she was the only skater to incorporate a variety of movements using different angles of the blade --- most notably in her step sequence --- as well as a triple-triple combination. Further, she virtually had no lower body pre-rotation on her jumps. She also executed the prettiest back crossovers and the most beautiful jump landings, all of which added to a sense of refinement and glamour to her skating. I believe she revolutionized the sport with her signature high-extension spiral, which ushered in a new era of flexibility and body line in ladies skating, as well as wearing Vera Wang dresses in competition. ♥️♥️♥️

It's funny you mention her face and I'm reminded of Michelle Kwan's detractors complaining about the pained dramatic expression she'd put on for certain sections of her programs. I wonder if Nancy might actually be on the Autism spectrum, she definitely demonstrated some traits in her younger years.

100% agree with all of this. Few people appreciate how good Nancy's skating basics were. Her jumps were textbook (toe loop and lutz practically perfect technique), and her use of edges and spins and spirals were all top draw

I really like Nancy's stoic yet vulnerable, New England Puritan style and aura. That and her insecurity give her a unique presence on the ice. I like the era when skaters used to have a distinctive personality when performing. They all seem so generic and homogeneous now, both in terms of skating style and aesthetic.

Harding was already a star in 1991. This was Kerrigan’s World Debut I’m pretty sure. Also, she placed 3rd at ‘91 Nationals so everyone was focused on Harding and Yamaguchi. Kerrigan’s saga didn’t start until the Olympics where she took home the bronze medal.

Kerrigan was always happy being second or third banana, but never comfortable being at the top under the glare of the spotlight.
This situation suited her perfectly in having to come from fifth to third.
Technically, even with a fall this was one of her strongest skates.
A triple-triple combo and a triple flip, a jump she rarely landed.
A breathtaking final spiral prob sealed the deal for the Bronze.
Interesting to note this was the first major competition where Kristi Yamaguchi beat Tonya Harding and she never looked back.

Nancy’s skating at times demonstrated her resolve to land her jumps, which made her performances compelling. She was in the moment and by no means giving up. I can’t help but be drawn in. Nancy always looks so elegant and she looks like the ideal ladie’s figure skater. Unfortunately this program, the choreography , the cut of the music was mediocre. And there were some moments where she looked awkward and some moves didn’t seem to match the music. Not sure why she would go back to this for her ‘94 olympics long program. To my knowledge, Tonya only landed her triple axel 4 times in competion: '91 nationals, '91 worlds, and in both the short and long at '91 Skate America. She never landed it in an Olympic competition. Also, I never saw Tonya land a triple/ triple combination. At the '94 Olympics, Tonya had trouble landing anything in her short program, which left her in 10th place. Even if you skate great in a long program (which she certainly did not), you're not going to win if you go into the long in 10th place. If memory serves me correctly, Tonya did a single axel instead of a triple axel in her long at the '94 Olympics, and I don't think she even accomplished a triple-double combination, let alone a triple/triple. Nancy was pretty consistent with her short programs; they were usually very good (her short at the '92 Olympics was amazing and put her in 2nd - though it should have been first; her '94 short was excellent, and put her into 1st going into the long program). In her '94 Olympics long, Nancy skated with peace and joy, landed her triple/triple combo, a triple salchow/double toe, triple loop, triple lutz, double axel, and a dandy double flip, and held out her trade mark spiral for a complete circle around Olympic ice, plus did several very nice spins. She deserved the gold, but received the silver.

@Qq Jjs I don't think her choreography looked rushed or awkward; it looked avant-garde and sophisticated, which it was intended to be. But I do agree that her final spiral was amazing, and the best one of all she saved for the 94 Olympic long program.

She's one of thos forgettable skaters to me. Never really in the spotlight except for when the Tonya-Nancy saga. She's boring to watch. And after her attitude for winning only the silver and at Disney, I'm glad she didn't win the gold. I can only imagine how big her head gets.

Anjong Please don’t think I’m bashing Nancy, but her lack of self confidence while skating couldn’t justify the arrogance that she had. about her own abilities. She’d been known to criticize some of her competition, but at the same time she was too nervous in competition. Even Katerina Witt commented on that. Seeing a sports psychologist helped her. In her defense though, she could be her own toughest critic.

Yes she is stiff and boring but you want to know what, this doesn’t come natural to her the way it did to Tonya Harding which means she had to work that much harder to achieve that level. If TH would have been more disciplined and not smoking with asthma and drinking she would have won that simple.

She actually doesn't, but you're entitled to your opinion. Nancy has far better basic skating skills, positioning, and skates with great speed. Tonya's skating is clunky and lacks finesse. They both had consistency issues throughout their careers.

    • @flightoflightning2505
      @flightoflightning2505 3 місяці тому

Harding’s 3A was so inconsistent. Nancy was a textbook skater, and her edge work was more dynamic and intricate than most skaters. Harding was very inconsistent. Nancy at least was consistent with 3T-3T and 3Lz. In fact, I think Harding only landed two 3Lz in the entire 1993 season. Harding couldn’t do a 3T-3T for the life of her with the exception of 1988-1991.

  • @quiddy

Another thing that remains the same is she never skated cleanly. Even without the pressure as Harding, Yamaguchi, Ito were all more favored than her in all the big 91 and 92 events, she still made a bunch of mistakes in each, despite medaling each time. This was probably her best of the 3 events, and still full of mistakes. And some were actually surprised she couldn't handle the pressure of being favored at 93 worlds, LOL! It was obvious to me that would always be a position she would hate and could never handle, as she couldn't even handle the pressure at all with no real pressure before that.

This was her first World Championship and she was still new to the international scene. I think we can cut her some slack for not being perfectly expressive. I do think that she was very elegant and this program is really sophisticated and haunting. I love the way she extended the spiral at the end! Shame about the fall on the double salchow. At the 1994 Games, the figure skating event was one of the most-watched events in television history, and Nancy skated beautifully! What a triumph it was!
