I remember watching this movie in the theaters it looked so amazing! The hospital scene with the boy, Violet crying and seeing her postal stamp in the future all had me crying😭 Kyoto Animation did just amazing job with this flim🔥As always great discussion and reaction
P.S. in the light novel, Violet did see Leon again in her travels and got to share a moment with him, looking up at the stars again.

The old lady at the museum was Nerine, the receptionist with short red hair. The eye color was the tell. She was a very minor character.
So it was brought up in the previous movie discussion, and is a major element in this one, but with technological advances, things like Dolls are becoming obsolete. We see Iris complain about how telephones will eventually put them out of business. We see a lamplighter looking up at the electric street lights because his job is no longer needed. And we see the completion of the radio tower, which is a symbol of mass communication. Even had Violet stayed a doll, she wouldn't have had long left in the career. So I feel like she quit at a good time, while she was on top, and before the industry died. And her going down to just working at a local small post office is nice.
However, at the same time, we see that these advancements aren't bad. Thanks to to these advancements, Violet and Hodgins were able to be informed about Yuris' condition and get Iris and Benedict to go to his aid. Then they were about to use telephones to let Yuris talk to his friend one last time. We also see one armed Gilbert able to help with the crops thanks to the technology. So while the age of Dolls is over, its easier for people to share their feelings over long distances, without having to hire someone. And we see how letters still have their value even in the modern day with Ann's granddaughter.
Also since its never brought up, in the novels Benedict and Cattleya become a couple. Though watching the anime, I always shipped Cattleya with Hodgins lol

I’m in full agreement with your ladies small critiques about the film, I would much prefer if Violet stayed with Hodgins and the crew. When they were watching the fireworks and Hodgins turn to talk to her and she wasn’t there, that pained my heart. Also would have like more time with the brothers and their bond. I think like Sam suggested, that Violet and Gilbert completed their respective “side quest” then reunited. Would have a much better outcome. But I still very enjoyed this film. It was a nice conclusion to the series. I really appreciate and enjoyed watching this wonderful bittersweet show with you lovelies.

I personally don’t really get y’all disappointment. Violet chose her love over her friends, yeah, we could see trough the series how much Gilbert meant to her and that nobody could’ve ever replaced him. Yea, it’s sad that she leaves the gang, but damn this is life, everyone have to move forward, everyone has their own personal lives. It doesn’t mean she never met them again or anything, when you move away from your home town to a different place are you not seeing your friends and family anymore? I don’t think so.
Also, I don’t really get all this stuff about “wasting of Violet’s character development”. Why is it a waste? She learned how to feel, how to live, how to love, thanks to Gilbert and her friends who she considered her family, thanks to all her clients, in the end she wasn’t this unemotional “doll” anymore, and she was ready to leave Gilbert, the love of her life, behind, it was enough for her knowing he is doing well. But when he replied to her with mutuality, why did she had to decline and why it’s “ruining her character development”? I really don’t get it. Not every story has to be about “letting go of the past and moving forward”, it’s not always the only way out, so if you have an opportunity to happily live a life with the love of your life - why th not to?

What side quests? This is real life. they were already apart for years and they finally saw each other. Do you want them to be seperated for even more years losing more of their time together? They dont have any "side quests" to do. Violet accomplished what she wanted to do. Finding out what I love you means and discovering her emotions. So everything she was doing now was working at the postal office everyday. She can do the same thing on the island. There is no need to be seperated any longer. And Gilbert also has nothing more to accomplish on the island. He only stayed here cause he felt guilty. But he already stayed here for years and became a teacher and helped the children. He redeemed himself enough. There are no more "side quests" for him and Violet to do. They would just continue to keep on working and the years would just pass. So the only "side quest" that really remains for them is to finally be together.

@@malkuusha all I’m saying is she slightly reverted back I think , like when the major didn’t want to see her and she just kind froze and I get where she is coming from but it just seems like she was back to when she only new how to function was under his orders , but is still a beautiful story just a little Sad that she really seems to enjoy being a doll but stopped 🤷🏼‍♀️

I wish Violet didn’t regress so hard, and that she recognized how much Hodgins cared about her too. I’d argue he loved her just as much as Gilbert did.
It is my informed opinion that Violet disappearing onto the island and never doing anything significant again until her death was a change they made as a direct response to the arson attack on the studio. Violet still had a three month backlog of work before she could move to the island, and her suitcase went back to Leiden with Hodgins after she jumped off the boat. There’s official material showing all the characters together later, but Violet wasn’t there when CH Postal Company closed, even though Roland and Taylor were. There’s also official material of Violet playing piano on the mainland, which is a clever skill transfer from typing.

      @piotr004 6 місяців тому +4

Exactly. It's double the sadness, because Violet Evergarden is about MATURE topics and life dilemmas (death is one of the MAJOR one), but literally many people who worked on the movie died in that arson, so they couldn't see their work. This movie was dedicated to the victims, there is even "sincerely" written at the beginning of the movie on the black background and "I love you" at the end of the movie again on the black background (it works both for the plot and as the tribute to the victims). Also, all 36 victims of the arson attack are included in the end credits as a tribute whether they'd worked on this movie or not makes this movie even more poignant and heartbreaking. Their lives live on in the art they've left behind!

I wouldn't of really enjoyed Violet/Gilbert separating that way. I don't really see why Gilbert should have to bear his guilt/burden by himself on the island. Violet and Gilbert bearing the burden together and helping others on the island is honestly really beautiful and fitting in my opinion.

I don’t see why Gilbert couldn’t invest some of his massive fortune into the island, though. He could at least replace his arm so that he’s a more productive worker. The jig is up anyway, the money wouldn’t out him, and I doubt they’d turn it down. Violet already ran around calling him Major, Dietfried showed up with the Navy, and the only other man knows he’s from Leidenschaftlich.

It's a little upsetting that Violet quit being a doll at 18 just to stay with Gilbert.... She was passionate about being a doll and it taught her so much about who she is. It also allowed her to heal from her pain of taking so many lives in the war by helping other people. Being a doll was a big part of Violet and it's disappointing the writers made her quit at 18 and just forget all about it.

i'll be honest, og violet i loved it so much despite it having some changes from the ln that were questionable but worked out, now when this movie came out and i found out the ending i instally hated it, i've said it many times but dont feel like putting all my thought on this again out there so i'll be short. For me this story was basically violet learning the meaning of love and the "i love you" gilbert told her, friend love, family/parental love and ofc lovers love, what i didnt want to happen was the i love you that gilbert told her when she was 14, a no thinking tool killing machine, someone who didnt know or experienced life, to be that type of love. All the time into healing, leaning to be a person, making friends and experiencing life just to bring him back last minute and go back to him, when i saw it the only thought i had was ah this is why trauma ppl or groomed girls will most likely go back to their abuser if they re-appear in their life, as dark as that thought can be thats just how it is, not that he was an abuser but u get the idea .Gilbert re-introduction to the story was the cheapest way to have "closure" and for me made s1 and special lose meaning.
tldr in the words of a reviewer:
"Gilbert understood that Violet would again dedicate everything to her old master if he returned to her life, and that's why he hid out in the middle of nowhere all this time. So why, after sticking to this decision for years, did he have a change of heart in one moment with just one letter? Was he that fickle? Did he not think things through when he decided to play dead? Was he just horny? It just doesn't make any sense.
And we are led to believe that Violet grew old and died peacefully with the same man who she had supposedly become independent from, who supposedly was no longer the sole thing about which her world revolved? The ending just becomes a more emotionally unsatisfying mess the more I think about it. It's as if the director/writer said, "Look, I know Violet has matured a lot over the years, but she needs a happily-ever-after ending with Gilbert no matter what happened in between. That's what the audiences want and expect, so that's what we'll give them. Oh, and let's throw in a scene of Violet bawling her eyes out while hugging Gilbert in there so the audience will feel happy for her."

I’ve got some thoughts on this. Let me preface by saying I loved the show, but the movie were letdowns.
Sounds like you’re familiar with changes from the source material. I sympathize with fans who wanted something more faithful, but I think almost all the changes were for the better. To my understanding, these changes were one of the loudest criticisms of the show, so they decided to try to be more faithful with the movies. Unfortunately they ran face first into consistency, continuity, and contradictory problems.
With regards to Gilbert - I don’t think he knew Violet survived until hearing her name at the ceremony. We know from the final episode that Gilbert wanted Violet to be adopted into the Bougainvillea family, but with the father dead and the mother sick, if Gilbert didn’t make it then that decision would be Dietfried’s, and we know he wouldn’t agree to it. That’s why she became an Evergarden instead. I think he was hoping to raise her properly after the war, and that’s why he looked so relieved after launching the flare, knowing the war was effectively over for them and they were both in one piece (right before catching a bullet with his face), and he spent all those years thinking she died right at the end because of him, not even having taught her the word “love”. I think he disappeared because he thought she was dead and didn’t want to go back to a normal life without her. As for why he pushed her away afterward, I’ll chock it up to a flood of internal conflict.
Honestly, Gilbert’s likability did a complete 180 degree turn in this movie, and I think the biggest issue is the writers split between matching the source material, or matching the changes they already made for the show. One of his new traits was guilt over how Leidenschaftlich’s military wiped out nearly every man on that island, so he felt compelled to help them now. Apparently he forgot that his family is one of the richest on the continent, and that money would do a lot of good for the islanders now.
As a slight correction, Violet does *not* hug Gilbert at the end there on the shore. The one time in the entire series where Violet hugs anyone is when comforting Anne after she runs away. Off the top of my head, Violet gets hugged by Gilbert multiple times, Luculia, Cattleya, and Aiden’s mother, maybe more. However, Violet *never* hugs anyone back, it’s a consistent detail of her behaviour.
Aside from Dietfried’s much needed character development, the final letter and reunion was maybe my favourite part of the movie, but the interaction after the reunion felt so weird. Violet can’t stop crying, Gilbert says her crying is going to make him cry, so she covers her face but he tells her not to. He tells her she’s wrong about him and stuff she shouldn’t do anymore, all of which she disagrees with but he keeps doing it anyway. Gilbert says I love you to her, but she can’t bring herself to say it back to him. She literally starts beating herself up. He walks over and hugs her, saying I love you again. Violet cannot bring herself to say I love you to him now, nor can she hug him back, nor does she stop crying even a bit. I’m not the only one who interpreted this as her realizing that she doesn’t actually want to stay with him, though I know that’s not their intention.
Another thing that just got to me is the obvious errors with no clear reason. For example, Gilbert decides to move to that island after he sees it from the shore of the mainland. At the same time, it takes a ship 3 days to travel between them. Both of these details are plot critical, yet incompatible, and they’re not the only ones. Violet stays on the island while Hodgins continues on the ship, but Violet still has a 3 month backlog of work to finish, and she didn’t jump in the water with any of her stuff.
My belief is that the extreme finality of Violet’s story in this movie, having a few significant years followed by nothing until her death, is a direct result of the KyoAni fire. For many of the victims, Violet Evergarden and this movie were the last things they ever worked on, so I think they wanted to be as clear as possible that there was no chance any more would be made without them.

This is and will forever be one of my favorite shows of all time, but this ending still pisses me off until today. I have no problem with romance in movies, as long as it's deserved. But this almost feels like a cheap fan fiction to "get them together" in the end to me. She deserved better, this guy gave a sh*t about her for years, while she always held on to him. He even rejects her at first when she came all the way to see him. But then he changes his mind and she even jumps off a ship, really?
And are we supposed to believe that "I love you" he said to her when she must have been 12 or 13 years old was meant romantically?
There's so much wrong with this outcome and it saddens me, because I love this work of art so much.

I don't think we're supposed to see their relationship in a romantic way. Yes, they got together in the end but the feelings they share for each other transcends the conventional form of love that we're all used to. They're both victims of trauma and their relationship was born out of extreme circumstances. Gilbert ignores Violet because he believes he used her as a weapon when she should have been living normal life. He blames himself for what happened to her. Was it selfish? Yes but I can't blame him. The love that Gilbert has for Violet is far more multi-faceted and goes beyond the realms of romance. To me, they were just two wounded souls who are able to gain joy and comfort through each other's embrace.

@@neilcherian257 Well they did get married in written continuations which in my opinion undermines the bond and type of love they should've had (brotherly/dad type) by implying it was romantic. Gilbert was an adult when he started taking care of Violet as a kid and he took care of her for several years. He should've loved her as a little sister or daughter. I don't think any amount of trauma should change that. Although for Violet, seeing as she wasn't the most emotionally balanced, I could see how it could turn into a romantic because her love was kind of just an unhealthy dependency that could turn into anything if dealt with differently. I would've loved to seen a story where Violet learns about the different types of love and even finding someone who she would marry, but unfortunately she had to marry her guardian.

@@batmanh8899 I knew they get married in the light novels. From what I understand KyoAni concluded the story differently from the anime. The fact their last scene ends with them hugging as opposed to a kiss is a hint that they're relationship wasn't romantic in nature even if they get married in the future.

@@neilcherian257 I'm not sure how or why they would get married if it isn't meant to be romantic, but I'm just not going to accept this ending and pretend they have wholesome close brother-sister relationship and Violet gets married to some other guy as my head cannon because even if the anime is meant to be different, it sucks that it being romantic is even a possibility.

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec 9 місяців тому +3

@@batmanh8899 If it helps at all, there’s no evidence that they got married after the movie, just that they stayed together.
The relationship was clearly romantic in the books, but that was one of the many things they changed for the animated series. To those familiar with both, they could not have changed much more without it being entirely different. Violet herself is a fundamentally different character between the two versions.
This difference actually led to the movies trying to be closer to the books after criticism about the show’s adaptation. This effort lead to more than a few problems with consistency, such as the relationship _feeling_ more romantic now. Comparatively, Isabella was supposed to be Violet’s “first friend”, because Erica, Iris, and Luculia don’t exist in the books, and Book Violet never bonds with clients the way Anime Violet does. Another example is Violet’s “post traumatic reaction” to Dietfried reaching into his pocket for what could hypothetically be a weapon. In the show she gets yelled at, grabbed, and even attacked several times, yet never reacts like that.
Honestly, I can’t picture Violet being romantic with anyone. Several characters are attracted to her throughout the series and she never notices. She never notices when other characters are attracted to each other right in front of her. She barely grasps the concept by the end of the show. Even years later and not long before this movie, she doesn’t realize the man Luculia is with is a romantic partner, she doesn’t realize that the “norm” of this setting is for women’s end goal to be find a man to have a family with, and despite having accepted that she may never see Gilbert again she has no interest in dating anyone.

I didn’t like how they made Violet regress so badly, especially when she was doing well at the end of last movie, which may have only been a few months earlier.
Also, I just feel so bad for Iris. She wanted to be the best Doll on the continent, but with Erica quitting she is definitively the worst Doll in the company. Not much later, telephones proliferate, literacy soars, and postal is nationalized, then Iris doesn’t even get to be a Doll at all anymore.
I wish Violet recognized that Hodgins loved her probably just as much as Gilbert did.
      Gilbert sucked almost entirely.

@@TukaihaHithlec Yeah, Blame the basically WW1 veteran who fought for his country, lost his eye and arm in war, woke up as an enemy PoW and then suffered shell shock and PTSD right after
You're a terrible human being, lol
