  • This is the Winners Bracket and the Grand Final of the CPL / Rezer Quake3 Tournament from 2000, held in Dallas, Texas.
The finalists are Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel (USA) and Victor "Makaveli" Cuadra (USA).
The tournament format was BO1 (Best of One)
    Tournament date: 13.04.2000 - 16.04.2000
I decide to merge the Winners-Bracket Final and the Grand Final in to one video, because the same two players are in both of them.
The maps that where played are:
    1). 0:34 Winners-Bracket Final - Map: Q3DM6 (The Campgrounds)
    2). 15:53 Grand Final - Map: Q3DM13 (Lost World)
    Here are the demos sources

    Grand Final Map dm13: www.esreality.com/post/869127/...
    (Both demo versions are "dm_48")
I converted the old dm_48 demos in to the newer dm_68 format, so that the two demos could be played back in to the latest version of Q3 v1.32 + CMPA.

I was there for this event! Didn't even make the top 128, but it was so much fun! Hard to believe it's been over 20 years, but I sure don't miss lugging around a heavy CRT monitor though.

these were the days man, john was such a beast back then. I remember setting up in byoc at this event and hearing ppl talk about this guy fatal1ty, "he uses picmip 5 man!" "what's picmip 5?" nobody even knew what it was back then. he set the mold for all of us with his practice ethic, low sensitivity with a hugeass supermat, etc. I got to top16 I remember being just so nervous and shaky cause I'd just drank a Bawls and my tournament seat was right under the AC vent so my whole arm was shaking lol, it's amazing I got that far but you could tell nerves were effecting everyone from how we were used to playing at home.

Its amazing how different the pace of the game was back then. In part because of the hardware, getting 125 fps was a bit of a challenge with hardware and a good config. With graphic commands that allowed that to happend but were later banned because it allowed cheating due to texture rendering with those commands. Some other were never banned and actually were picked up in later mods such as ZeRo4 config that used the thin light with str commands playing with the zoomfov. I loved playing with the config back then.
Then you see the movement, back then with ball mouses or early optical that couldn't handle high G tracking. So accuracy and precision had to be offsetted by a bit of positioning + strafe-aiming to minimize mouse movement.
Same with the mouse-sens + mouse-accel combinations back then, some players were high sens with no accel. Then others like russian players were very low sens and high accel, which was very useful in some situations, but most of these were to address the ball mouses and low G tracking opticals, until logitech came with the dual optical.
That is why LG percentages around 25-30% were considered high, same with railgun around 40-50%.
Also, Q3 OSP had a funny way with hitboxes shapes and latency to the server which enabled stuff that you could only do at lan and not online. Hence the importance of LAN parties and tournaments. Whole different thing than it is today with all the netcoding.

this would be cool, i think the LG has changed quite a bit between the early osp days of quake 3 and the quake live days? from my understanding LG used to have kind of a 'firehose' effect when firing it where it would lag behind the crosshair, i wasnt around back then and its hard to find evidence of these changes but this would of made LG much harder to hit

Just a few months after the match in this video, he fell away. 2001 was completely dominated by zero4 (cpl babbages, wcg and quakecon). Less than a year after that, he failed to qualify out of NA for WCG 2002.
