That's not CGI, that's practical effects.
Not sure if you are a Star Trek Person or not, or if you recognised him, but the wild haired scientist at Area 51 is played by Brent Spiner, who plays the Android Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

My favorite part of the speech is, “We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore…”

I did this monologue as my first theatre piece in highschool. Still one of my favorite monologues ever. thanks for addressing it.
Those weren't "graphics", they built actual models of all those buildings and city blocks and blew them up on film. They actually built the spaceships, the aliens and alien suits, even the canyon that the fighter jets flew through. That's why everything looked so good, because it was real.
I much prefer this kind of film making over the modern method of CGI.
They mixed practical models and CGI
The alien ship models were actually fifteen miles wide, too! 😆 That wasn't easy to pull off. And it was expensive, which is why they only ever made one, and shot it as the model for ALL the space ship scenes. Repairing New York and Los Angeles after brutally blowing them up practically bankrupted America! Needless to say this was an expensive flick! lol
@@0predaking0 the CGI was very minimal tho, I think it was mostly the energy blasts. Compositing doesn't actually count as CGI, that's only a visual effect.
@@Enrique-Garcia You are MOSTLY right but lots of the small stuff in the battles was actual CGI, small as in scale of individual items in large scenes not necessarily if you saw them in real life lol. So when they had the hundreds of small non-organic fighters, both alien and fighter jets the individual elements were CGI not miniature models.
The alternate versions of scenes showcase that when they had Randy Quaid show up in his crop dusting biplane with a missile strapped to it for the climactic scene where they escort him to the big ship. The plane with an 80 knot top speed makes more sense moving so slowly in that scene than the fighter jet taking so long to climb 80 feet, but I am so glad they changed that CG model as it looked so silly.
Bill Pullman's Presidential speech is still one of the best moments in film. Best delivery of a speech.
I've read that if you get a couple beers in him, you can get him to do that speech. He still knows it.
Moreover, this speech is improvised. At least that's what I read from the curiosities for this movie.
@@ponczi Bill Pullman did an interview somewhere here on UA-cam where he confirms that this was written in the script and he did it multiple times - as opposed to another myth that said he did it in one take.

I haven't watched this since my daughter was born and hearing the "Is Mommy sleeping now?" line and imagining myself in the fathers shoes was a real gut punch.
Having kids has totally changed how I watch movies. There are some things that just land differently now...

The guy with the voice is Harvey Fierstein and he is a treasure and an icon. That is his real and natural voice. Everybody has two sets of vocal cords, we just often use only one. It's not hard to talk through both of them. When his voice "dropped" as a kid both of his got permanently activated so he has that dual voice all the time.

He's in Robin Williams' "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Disney's animated Milan. My son was born in '96 and now he's retired U.S. Navy.
I can relate. My voice is 2X deeper than his and it changed @ 12yo. A little hard calling girls on the phone and explaining to parents that I'm not 40yo.
This was one of the last films to rely heavily on minature models which is one reason the special effects hold up despite some aging 90s CGI because the CGI was used to supplement the practical effects

It’s crazy people outside of the US haven’t heard of Area 51. As kids we always figured aliens were being experimented on. Lol
I just don't think its talked about as much anymore , in the UK most kids i knew in the 80's knew about area 51

I grew up in the 90s in the UK and I knew what Area 51 was. Then again I was a big X-Files fan.

That “Welcome to Earth” punch scene was hilarious!
Fun fact, the city burning flames early in the film were not cgi. Too early for that. They built city models, flipped them on their side, and sent flames through them recorded with a high speed camera.

To cats, Alf is basically a xenomorph.
From our perspective, although humanoid and very similar to terrans, Luke, Leia, Obi Wan and Han are all alien. They all come from planets in a Galaxy Far Far away.
A blockbuster classic. It's actually interesting to see people discovering this for the first time. Of course it boggles my mind because when it came out it was the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time. My how times change.

It's the "Gone With The Wind" effect. GWTW was an instant classic when it was made, and was loved by everybody. But even the kids of adults who watched it can reach adulthood without ever watching it themselves, and so there have been two or three generations of film-watchers that discovered it for the first time, 20-50 years after the fact. Hell, I'm sure there are people today who haven't ever seen it, despite GWTW being one of the biggest classics in Hollywood history by this point.
Same phenomenon with this (and every) film. No matter how big a movie is, it always has to make a new impression on each successive generation. Only a fraction of all the movies ever made have ever gotten to do this. Most movies just tend to fade into oblivion after a few decades.
I love it when people in their 20s can’t believe anything cool happened before they were born. Yes, the 1990s were the pinnacle of practical effects.

I was a senior in HS when this came out and a guy in art class painted the movie poster but replaced the White House with the school. He did such a good job on it though the teacher had no choice but display it during parents night. Every time I watch it now it remind me of that.
He'd be escorted out of the school in handcuffs today. 🤣

Agreed. This movie just has a different kind of atmosphere/ ambience (?). I get legitimate chills when the ships roll over the cities and then when the destruction begins.
Independence Day was a huge deal when it premiered in 1996. The premiere here in Oslo, Norway was seven screenings in 70mm film in the biggest concert arena at the time, Oslo Spektrum with an audience of 4500 each night. It was completely sold out and tickets on the black market sold for eight times the original price. The screen used had a width of 40.24 metres and ended up in the Guiness Book of Records as the world's largest cinema screen
We had a slightly smaller screen in a theater (the last single screen theatre in my city). And every single showing for the first week was full. They had line ups around the mall during prime time.

Area 51 is also known as Groom Lake. It has been around since the 50s. It's a secret air base used for testing classified aircraft.

Yh so I don't think everyone quite appreciates how long ago 26 years was in visual effects, this is less than a year on from Toy Story. This movie won the academy award for visual effects at the time.
I enjoy seeing Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum teaming up to take down aliens. Plus I love the president's speech that inspired all fighter pilots to not be afraid but to fight back. Today we celebrate our Independence Day.
Area 51 has been around since the 1950s. However, the Central Intelligence Agency didn't publicly acknowledge the base's existence until 2013.
But Bob Lazar blew the lid off it with his tv news interview with George Knapp back in the early 80's.

This movie has a special place in my heart because it was the very first movie I saw in theaters after I finished Basic Training for the Navy. I graduated June of 1996 in Illinois and was in San Diego the following month when I saw it. It was amazing.
Bill Pullman (President) had to give his "big speech" on one of the earliest days of filming, and he was terrified because he didn't know how "big" to make the speech. Roland Emmerich told him to make it as big as he could, and now it's a classic.
Such an entertaining movie, it's not the greatest thing, but it's a classic 90's blockbuster... Anyway, don't watch the sequel, it takes all those good feelings away lol

It's a popcorn movie. Don't expect high cinematic art or grand social commentary. Just turn off your brain and enjoy the pretty colors. And it's excels at that.

Not just *A* classic 90's blockbuster. It was *THE* 90's blockbuster. What made it so successful is it was basically the first movie of its kind overall.
I have to disagree with you - for me this is a 90's movie that broke records in its era, and to this day in every department still holds up well therefore I would definitely class it as at very least 1 of the all time greats.
I was 12 when this movie hit theatres and my Dad took me to see it. It was soo cool to see this on the big screen. It has become a holiday staple in our family for the 4th of July and I still love watching it. I wish Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith would do another movie together cause they played off each other very well and they make a cool duo.
Mary has been living under a rock never seen or heard of a lot of older tv shows, movies & games.
Bill Pullman portrayed the best President ever!
He had to make hard decisions for the good of the world.
Agreed, still my favorite performance from Pullman. I also really liked Morgan Freeman's President Beck character from Deep Impact, I would put him at a very close second. Underrated performance IMHO.

"It could have had some comical moments"? There were many funny lines and situations in the movie. How about when Will Smith first encountered an alien, said "Welcome to Earth" and then punched it in the face?... I always get a laugh out of that one.

One of the biggest blockbusters of the 90's. Very hard to top, and it has so many iconic scenes, dialogue, set pieces, and special effects!!
This movie blew me away when I saw this in theaters with my brother and sister. It made $880 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget. It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
It was going to make it's TV Debut on FOX but due to the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks, it was removed from it's a schedule an replaced by Mrs. DOUBTFIRE.

Nah, it was on TV before 2001. I got it on VHS tape for Christmas in 1996 and wore that thing out, lol.

The scene was shot near the great salt lake in Utah and with the great salt lake being notorious for having a foul smell, Will Smith was reacting to the stench on the set

I saw this movie on the big screen, July 4th, 1996 in a packed theater. One of my favorite movie experiences ever!
7 year old me saw this in movie theaters. Was mine and my dad's favorite. Watched it every 4th and 100% excitement every time.
Same for me, saw it when I was 7 and I remember I was talking all the time about the movie on my way home from the cinema. One of my favorite movies for me as well.

The movie with the greatest motivational speech of all time
Fierstein's distinctive gravelly voice is a result of an overdeveloped vestibular fold in his vocal cords, essentially giving him a "double voice" when he speaks. He is best known for his movie roles in Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, and as the voice of Yao in Mulan and Mulan II.
Really? My mom told me his raspy voice developed from way too many cigarettes and cigars!

I highly recommend that you also watch "The Day After Tomorrow" from 2004, by the same director. It's also a great sci-fi movie and not a military movie.
Am I the only one getting so over with her always complaining about older movies CGI and special effects that's what happens in life we improve, but I can watch "The wizard of Oz" and still appreciate the movie for what it is great storytelling is what it's all about quit being so narrow-minded and repetitive.
Agreed 100%. I find it disrespectful. Nevermind that so many of these movies still look great, and the effects sell the scene and movie really, really well.

The nice thing about Independence Day is that it came out the same year I was born, and it's been one of my childhood favorites, also Mary, there's also an extended version of Independence Day with over 9 minutes of extended scenes.
That speech by the president is probably the greatest speech in all of cinema
The speech is so good because Shakespeare wrote it. Clearly a reworded lift from the classic Saint Crispin's day speech. Substitute English archers about to get a serious whipping from French mounted knights, and it's exactly the same scenario.
"And gentlemen of England now abed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap while any speaks that fought with us upon SAINT CRISPINS DAY!!!"

There's also no CG in it, it's mostly miniatures and a bit of compositing.

I remember when this first came out back in 1996. It was quite an event movie very similar to when Jurassic Park first came out in 1993. These days there's a blockbuster every week but back then it was really special

The Roswell incident, which gave Area 51 the UFO conspiracy theory, occurred in 1947, so it's been a thing for a while, yeah. :)
CGI was perfected in the 90s most 90s movies are as good CGI as today’s movies
That is still the best Presidential speech in movie or real life ever.
Check out some old Ronald Regan speeches, JFK had one or 2 good ones too.
I remember watching this in theaters and the scene when they opened up the alien suit made everyone in theater jump.
Love the movie and that speech the president gave, probably one of my favorite speeches in any movie. Its so damn good.
Will Smith was already famous from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but IMO this is what really solidified his career as an actor and earned him international awareness and appreciation.

It's so interesting to rewatch this reaction because of how much reallife context Mary had when she saw this film.
41:49 ??? There are lots of comedic moments in this movie, especially with Will Smith's character, and Randy Quaid's character (in fact Quaid is almost completely comic until the very end). Jeff Goldblum has several funny moments with Judd Hirsch, and the Harvey Fierstein character's sole purpose in the film is for comic relief. And that's an abridged list.
Dissing the cgi is off-putting.
Especially since there wasn't any.

It's upsetting how people keep saying there using a green screen in this movie. Except for the Volume and Disney people are still using green screen. For a long time this movie was one of the biggest Sci Fi movies until the MCU and Transformers came along. Only think alien for years was This Movie, STAR Wars, Star Trek, Fith Element, Alien , ET and Predator
Men in Black came out in 1997.

It’s interesting how people will show shock at something feeling the same from the late 90s yet be completely comfortable with something from 2002. Do they realize yet that there’s only 6 or so years difference? 6 years ago was 2016. How much has changed since then? I swear, having the century change really made people forget that the 90s were not very long ago. At least for Miss Mary here. She probably remembers the 00s pretty well. ‘96 was only 4 years before that.
Yep for those of us that grew up in the time period it doesn't feel that long ago but number wise it wasn't yesterday. Still in the big picture, 20 30 or even 40 years isn't that long when you consider many of us will live to be 90.
6 years is a pretty long time in computer development as well as developing new techniques, there is a reason LOTR holds up while Matrix and Star Wars do not for early 2000s movies. Another 6 year period would be your end point of 02 and 08, movies were looking quite a bit better in terms of cgi at the end of the 00s instead of the beginning

This was HUGE when it came out. The marketing for this was unlike anything I'd seen before it. Crazy. Changed the whole meaning of Blockbuster.
TWISTER came out the same year so we'd had a taste of that kind of movie beforehand, but ID4 had a HUGE lead.

My favorite Roland Emmerich film is probably Stargate. It has any number of problems, but it's a much more creative premise than his various movies about natural disasters.
The Patriot! Such an emotional movie, but well acted by Gibson, Ledger (R.I.P.), and of course Isaacs!
using the word Historical to refer to "The Patriot" is an unpardonable sin.

Star Gate was a great movie of it's time. It how ever doesn't stand up that well anymore due to the TV series it created and follow up movies from said TV series. Still it was a good movie of it's time.
That "you can't bank at that speed" scene gets me laughing every time. I have personally taken a F/A-18 off a runway lifted off the ground, hit the afterburner and just pulled back on the stick and just went straight up. Pulled about 6.5 G's doing it but other than that A ok. During air shows the Blue angel pilots pull the same type of maneuver as seen in the film and they don't have what came down to a panic attack.
Even in the event of having symptoms of hypoxia there are emergency steps to counter it. One of the things no military pilot would ever do is pull his or her mask off in that type of situation. As Marine Captains (O-3) they have probably been in an active squadron well out of flight school for at least at a min a year at this point and would know better.
The very first time I saw this movie was at the movie theaters with my Mom, my Dad and my Grandmother when I was only 19 years old.
My mother and I saw it. I was either 20 or 21, depending on what day (my bday is July 22).

No. It was a thing at least back in the 50s.

Almost 30 years later, there is still no other country that can produce this level of special effects sci-fi.
Except New Zealand. They beat the pants off you on a regular basis.
You do realise that the UK is the dominant world leader in special effects? From the original Star Wars films to the latest Dune films, many of the big sci-fi blockbusters are made in the UK.

I can never separate this film from my memory of the audio cutting out in the cinema, followed by a friend swearing loudly and proceeding to make his own sound effects for Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith taking off in the alien fighter until the sound returned.
The Chaplan marrying them is Ron Howard's father and Bryce Dallas Howard's grandfather. And also they were using Blue Screen back in the nineties.
The president's speech gets me every time.
This is a great movie, not just for Americans. This is one of those movies that I have to watch sober.

Oh the summer of 1996...as a teen...the Olympics this movie 6 weeks of summer camp with my girlfriend...lol...really the last innocent summer I had as a young person...then the next year was adult reality...lol....
I think we can all agree this movie has one of the all-time greatest taglines:

Independence Day is my number 1 favorite movie. I don't know entirely why, but it just is.

I think one interesting thing was that when they were at the table opening the alien suit, you not only have the actor that played Data from Star trek. But... it also had the actor that was conducting the autopsy on the girl in Silence of the Lambs AND the guy that played a captured person that an alien baby was placed in... in Alien Resurrection.

This was the first movie I ever watched twice in the theater. And if you feel old, I was 16 when it was released.
