GREAT review. Nice to see someone showcasing $500 or less watches. All too often I see reviews on watches costing thousands upon thousands of dollars (out of most average people realistic budgets). These can be obtained in most coasts for less than one week salary. Keep these up! 👍
Lol in the same breath that he says it has a see-through caseback, it cuts to a frame with the SS caseback. I have the sarb017 (model in the vid) and it has a steel caseback with the alpinist logo on it. The recently released Prospex models do have a clear case back though.
Great video Brock! Really liking these watch themed videos. My thoughts: Pretty much depends on the mood which watch I would choose, but for everyday use I'd pick Seiko Turtle or Hamilton khaki. Steinhart has also many great watches around that 500 budget, but they share opinions. Also as you mentioned many microbrands have a lot of good options.
I think you mixed and matched features/images of the old Seiko Alpinist (SARB017) and the newley released version (SPB121). They’re fairly different, so it’s worth considering both. Great video overall!
Great List! I have 4 of the watches on your list, Personally as a sports watch the fit, finish and performance of the Seiko Turtles are my favorite and you can still find those for about $250-300. I don't like the Seiko bands, an upgrade in the band makes a Big difference I like the Strapcode Super Jubilee bracelets for about $100 combined with a Turtle still gets you under the $500 mark and makes your watch look 2-3x better, You can also get upgrades on the bands on many of the watches on your list and for some you really should. Thanks for the Video!
Seiko sarb033. No doubt. I don't wear it, but I couldn't let go of it when another watch took its place in my collection. One of my wife's favourite pieces now.
My favorite watch I have bought so far is the Timex Todd Snyder Gold Welton. It is a 34mm quartz dress watch, that uses what I'm certain is the same case as the 34mm handwound Marlin. I put it on a Speidel Twist-o-Flex bracelet, and it fits it perfectly. The black leather strap it comes on is nice too, just a little too formal for everyday wear. It is around $160, but I found a 15 percent off code. Literally the perfect budget dress watch in my opinion.
Does anyone happen to know what style of bracelet that is on the Dan Henry watch? Also great job on your vid. I've always loved watches since I was a kid. But had very little knowledge. Thanks to the r/watches subreddit and vids like this I'm learning what's worth my money.
Hi, I have a Seiko Presage SPRD-41and im loving it. I noticed that the retaining ring / movement holder is plastic instead of metal. After reading some forums apparently Seiko cut corners and installed plastic to save money. Do you think that was the reason and will it effect he quality / longevity of the watch. Thank you.
For your „watches under 1000 dollars“ you should definitely include the Hamilton Intra-matic. I’ve recently gotten mine as my first automatic watch and I absolutely love it. It definitely falls into a dressier category, but youre still able to dress it down if you want to.
Nowadays most have a cell phone attached to their hip which tells the time makes watches optimally I don't have a cell phone and I can't wear my watch with that stretch o matic band Hamilton antique at least 1950 model self-winding no date great watch don't cost me a dime to run it either battery can't corrode up in it cuz there's none but I'll have to get a leather band to wear it because that metal one isn't good for old guy like me 18 karat gold filled
Great list Brock, you have excellent taste. I have 5(!) of the watches you mention. 😉 As for other watches, I just bought the GoldenEye Glycine Combat Sub for $300. The other watch I'm eyeing is the Smith's Everest @ $399. Keep up the great work.

Great list, Brock. I have the SARB033 and would also recommend it to everyone. The Cocktail Time is one I have my eyes on. Good suggestion going for the quartz version of the Max Bill: get the Bauhaus look at a fraction of the cost. Finally, although I am familiar with Dan Henry, I had not seen the 1970 until this video. That’s a nice looking watch!
Never worn a watch, have a antique British pocket watch which I wear occasionally, but nevertheless I enjoyed this. They must be much cheaper in the USA though... the Junghans Max Bill Automatic for example is over £1,300 retail in the UK! even the non-automatics are over £500.
Hi Brock! Great video and great watches! Unfortunately Seiko SARBs are not produced anymore and are running out of stock. I've had a lucky strike and bought a SARB033 recently on amazon for less than 400$. However, it is every day harder to find SARBs and prices are going up. I suggest all the interested modest men here to speed up if interested!
The Seiko alpinist seems to have gained attention considering it’s not longer under $500. The amazon link shows the watch being priced at £650 (which is worth more than $650 therefore > $500)
I have a Hamilton. A Seiko sarbo35. a Steinhart Ocean one 39. All cost me $500 . I have a Seiko skxo13 that I paid $200 . All are great watches. The Seko skx o13 has gone up $200 . I will flip mine ! Flip yours .
That's a pretty good list, though I don't see the desire for the SKX when it's gone up so much in price since discontinuation. I would have put the Seiko Turtle on the list instead (or even the Samurai), since it's definitely an upgrade in finish and movement, in my opinion. As mentioned below, the SARB017 doesn't have a see through case back. Only the newer, much more expensive SPB121 replacement for the SARB017 has that. I have the Dan Henry 1970, and really enjoy it. I really want one of those Brew Retrographs, especially the Technicolor.

Because they're still great watches, and many people prefer them over their "replacements".
In England you can't get an Omega for under five hundred unless it's second hand and missing it's hands lol,,best watch for two hundred and fifty quid is sport Tissot IMO
My favorite under 500 is the Tissot Visodate 😄
