  • Operations is one of the main functions of almost any organisation. Operations are the core daily activities that create and deliver value to the customers.
    But "this" video is about the actual role of operations manager across a wide range of organisations and industries even if they don't call themselves that.

    Everything you buy has come to you via operations managers. Your furniture, your laptop, your internet service, medical care, the water coming out of your tap, the amazon package you got delivered... Operations Managers were responsible for every one of these products and services - created and delivered under their design, planning and supervision.
    Operations managers are responsible for designing, delivering, developing and directing the operations of an organisation be that a factory, restaurant, hospital, airport, in the armed forces or a law firm.
    Designing - the processes, facilities, layouts and systems of the operations
    Delivering - planning and controlling of the ongoing operations. Responsible for the results being achieved
    Developing - improving the operations. Identifying opportunities, prioritizing, allocating resources and implementing them
    Directing - medium / long term management - steering performance, preparing and adapting for the future

    Iโ€™ve struggled to find a career that suits my personality. I want to be able to help people, contribute, create, organize and develop. I would appreciate doing this on a large scale and working with teams to create strategies and processes to make things easier, safer, reliable and efficient. I would go as far as to say I would appreciate having a part in creating new cities even. Operations management just seems like itโ€™s suitable to my personality and I feel as though I would be genuinely happy doing something like this.

    My learning is that it has a lot of purpose of being an operation management.
    The purpose of Operation Management is to deliver the good quality value to customs or consumers. It has a core role, everything that we buy comes to operation management; food, technologies, services and etc. every product that we purchase is created, designed, and planned by an operation management. They are also responsible for designing, delivering, developing and directing of the operations of an organization.
    There four major characteristics of an Operation management; First of all what does it mean to design things purposely? It actually means you need to take a step back and consider the narrative you want to offer about your company, what you stand for, your current clientele, and the kind of customers you want to draw in. Next is Delivering; it plans and control the ongoing operation, third is Developing; it manage the continuous improvement or enhancement of the agency and employees, well lastly is the Directing; it is the controller of all the ongoing operation inside and outside the agency. Viewing the performance, mandating what to do, changing resources.

    • @LaurenceGartside
      @LaurenceGartside  2 ั€ะพะบะธ ั‚ะพะผัƒ +2

      Hi Estrada. Glad you enjoyed the video.
      Companies structure their departments / divisions / teams very differently. "Operations" can often be considered to be one of the departments / functions of a business and would have a head operations managers (and likely other managers who are also by some definition operations managers too).
      Other functions like marketing, finance, customer service will all have their own managers who manage the workings of those departments but are not typically called "operations" managers in the same way.
      Often the distinction is that the primary value generating activity of the company is... For a marketing company who sell marketing services, then marketing could be said to be their primary operations. Whereas for a pencil factory, the marketing department is just a supporting function.
      Most operations managers in the world dont even have that title but the skillset, management theory and attitude is of value whenever processes and resources must be managed to do something productive - whatever we call those job roles in a certain company.

      Good question! The path to operations management varies. Some start in a different field, gaining experience before transitioning. Others go straight from university. It depends on your goals and preferences. Both paths can lead to success in operations management; choose what suits you best.
      By the way, I'd like to invite you to my free mini course in operations management.

    • @LaurenceGartside
      @LaurenceGartside  10 ะผั–ััั†ั–ะฒ ั‚ะพะผัƒ

      OM and IE are not the same but are very similar. Industrial Engineers provide a service to senior operations managers and typically work within the operations department /function.
      Many would say that IE is a sub section of OM.
      Industrial engineers only focus on designing, implementing and improving operations, systems / processes, whilst OM is an umbrella subject that covers all but OM is also primarily responsible for running the day-to-day operations. IE does not have any responsibility for the day-to-day running of the operations.
      In then next month, I will be releasing an introductory course on Industrial Engineering so stay tuned :)

      Many university business schools offer degrees / MBA based specifically on operations management and there are also many online degrees or "massive online open courses" (MOOCs). If you search MOOCs operations management on google you can find lots of providers.
      I offer a variety of shorter video courses through my website RowtonsTraining.com including one specifically called "Operations Management A-Z" which is a 3hour online video training course.

      Operations and Management Information Systems certainly complement each other well. If you are taking and MBA I assume you are working towards a very senior role. Just beware that as you aspire to get more senior in an organisation, it is the higher level understanding and the interplay of the departments and systems that will matter more than deep knowledge of how to operate certain software packages.
