I got out of HO scale model railroading years ago but I held on to the train table because I could not find anyone who wanted it and someone on a video suggested School the train club and they came and picked it up and some kid is going to get a nice fully scenic train layout. Just because you dye does not mean that your pride and joy has to die with you. Imagine the decades of joy you are going to get out of this layout.
I would basically leaves a layout as it is without trying to expand it. Let's not forget the layout is vintage as well as all of the building. It is like a time capsule. It should give you plenty of enjoyment as it is.
Let's not forget in the 1970s for the price of a good quality Atlas diesel HO scale locomotive 🚂 you could buy a top-of-the-line Tyco train set. Lots of people look down on bachman and Tyco locomotive but many of them with a little bit of cleaning grease and oil will run another 50 years. Indeed with the price of trains today for someone just starting out buying you stuff from train shows is going to be your best bet. I'm sure the previous owner of your train layout is looking down from heaven happy that his train layout is being enjoyed.
I don't doubt that there was not an HO scale model railroader alive in the old days that did not have an atlas track planning book. I have one of my uncles old copies and it was $2 back when a issue of model railroader was 35cents. They stoke the fires of your imagination in the old days especially the larger layouts.

Still Love That Table have you given It Any thought of Expand that table?
It's a lot of fun! I'm hesitant to make much in the way of changes, but do have a major change on the way. Hopefully in the next week or two.

Basement is repaired, but still have a lot of work to do to get it back to normal.
