I pul from the center. Yes, Bernat blanket is horrible to pull from the center, but imho the OGO is too gimmicky and less yarn for more money plus wasteful packaging. Love your videos! Much love!

You are hilarious😂 You always put a smile on my face. I am an "inney" Pulling from the center (after the initial "yarn barf") is the way to go. The skein seems to stay more stationary and I am able to keep better tension when crocheting or knitting. Even when I wind a hank of yarn (on the swifter) I pull from the center

For me it depends on the yarn. #4 cake yarns center pull but #3 I prefer out pull.
As of last Christmas my son brought me a spinning wooden yarn holder so I roll all my yarn into cakes and pull from the outside no barf or tangle.

Yes to the Salad bowl! I sometimes wind my yarn before I ever start, to get rid of the tangles and badly tied knots. I then take it from the outside. I have also used the center pull too. Great Yarn room!!!

I really enjoy your talks. The bits of crochet wisdom you impart are very handy (i collect them from your tutorials too!) I love that there's no theoretical high-handedness - almost all problems and suggested solutions are something that I have come across in the past two years of crocheting. And I am grateful for it! Thank you!

Learned how to knit with Red Heart Super Saver, who LABELS their skeins with where to pull from, which is very considerate of them. Other companies *cough* Lion Brand, creates nothing but a mess when trying to pull from the inside.

Honestly I have to pull all LB from the outside, otherwise it is all barf. They should put a warning lable on the outside. "WARNING ! YARN BARF AHEAD FOR THE NEXT 200 YARDS"

Inny here as well & for a similar reason, my Grandmothers (yes that's plural) told me to. Lol Once I get past the "yarn barf" everything seems to be smooth going when pulling from the inside. I've tried pulling from the exterior & things never go well, even when I use a bowl or tub the yarn jumps out on me.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving yarn & that's why I like your videos so much. I can tell you love what you do & you have helped me bring joy to so many friends & family members with your awesome tutorials. Thanks for sharing your talent with the rest of us.

I've been knitting since I was four years old and proudly made my first chunky knit jumper before I was five. I recently discovered how much fun it is to crochet and I'm currently working on an heirloom blanket for my daughter. I always take the yarn from the inside, I agree with you regarding the tension and smooth flow of yarn, also it's not bouncing around picking up dust and hair etc. so I don't have to stop to pick those out if I was to use the outside end. Usually, if I can't get my fingers in the middle I use my crochet hook to pull out the end, works every time 🙂

With skeins of yarn, I'm an innie. With cake yarn, I'm an outie and use my yarn bowl. The only thing to remember, is if you are using a self stripping or a pattern type yarn always be consistent with how you start your yarn. Colors follow an order and switching back and forth will make it look wonky.

My grandmother taught me how to crochet 50 years ago. The first thing she taught me was how to take a skein of yarn and roll it into a ball, getting rid of any tangles along the way. I still, to this day, start my yarn projects with winding the yarn. I’ve used the O’Go yarn and I LOVE IT! No need to roll into a ball.

I am an interior puller as well. My mother was an exterior puller and she taught me how to knit when I was 7. I hated pulling that ball around and it would go flying everywhere; it drove me bananas. So, I tried center pulling and have done it ever since. I also love to have my yarn ball at my hand height too! It is so easy to just yank a few yards out and just crochet away! I started crocheting in my early 20's and have loved it more than knitting, and with that I traded my needles for hooks and have never looked back!

  • @MCher2
    @MCher2 2 роки тому

I agree with your reasoning! I hate chasing my ball of yarn around the room. It’s so distracting from an otherwise enjoyable experience. I actually picked up a nostepinne at one time to wind skeins into center pull balls when needed. You probably know this but a nostepinne can be a simple stick. It doesn’t need to be anything expensive but I do love the beautiful polished woods the craftsmen use in making them.

I have always been an innie, but here in South Africa the yarn balls have become increasingly hard to start from the centre. One has to pull a whole chunk out first go to get it working. I thought it was just me but recently I found a packet of yarn, at least 30 years old & every ball or skein pulled out perfectly every time, they had even stuck the outer end lightly to the label, which I thought really clever. I sort of remember my
Mom being an innie but, as she died when I was just a kid, I never benefitted from learning from her. I have a Tunisian needle that comes in three pieces so you can make it really long, have done baby blankets with two colours in one piece. Looks really nice, even though just the plain stitch, as the ‘pick up’ stitch is always over the other. Love your tutorials!! Thank you.

I am an outtie too because that is what my Mom did. I use a yarn basket like my Mom did which means my ball can flop around no worries. I am intrigued about the innie now and will try for my next project and see how that goes. I did always wonder watching the tutorials why you never seem to have to pull yarn off the ball. Now I know! I will see if it is an innie vs outtie thing or just me.

I agree with you! I use my yarn from the middle and I don't mind the little work at the beginning. When you use it from the outside, the yarn is constantly jumping around. I find the stitches are sometimes not as uniform when I'm fighting with the yarn! I've been crocheting for over 50 years and I used to buy my yarn in "hanks" and had to roll balls with it. I was so happy to be able to start using the skeins already rolled and have the starting end in the middle!!!!

I don't know if this is a British thing but I pull from the centre and roll it into a new ball. This way I can check the yarn before any crocheting takes place. The yarn 'barf' might be all tangled up, there may be knots that need redoing, or any other problems with the yarn. Thanks for your vid, Mikey. Very entertaining 😀😀

I've been pulling my yarn from the center since the brands have made it easier to get to. But if that's not the case I start from the outer portion of the skein, but it gets frustrating when you come to end working from this position because I find the yarn tangles and it waste my time trying to unravel. After a few minutes and before the frustration goes into overdrive, I will simply cut off the remaining amount and file it under "T" (Trash). You are correct we are the creators and each individual has their own preference. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy all your videos and the joy you bring to all of us. Take care 😊.

I used both ways and I also design my own yarn cakes that I roll into balls to make my blankets.

I'm an innie too. Have been for years. If you use a salad bowl or another larger one try adding a paper "clamp", the ones you have to pinch open, to the edge of the bowl. Run the end of your yarn through the part you pinch. It helps keep the yarn flowing freely and if not you know you have to untangle it. It's like the curly part of an official "yarn bowl".

I’m spoiled 😂. I cake my yarn (from the center if possible) then re-cake (is that a word?) to get the tension exactly the way I prefer. Impeccable yarn is my fave 4 weight for big projects but oh. my. goodness. The BARF! Way worse than Bernat Blanket IMO. Thank you Mikey for another smile today ❤.

I pull from the center as well. However I only use Cotton yarn for blankets. I wind balls on to my Swift and then rewind a new ball. The reason I do all of that is because I like a cake type yarn as it just sits there on its flat bottom instead of collapsing in to a new tangle. I spray the Swift with anti static spray as it builds up a bit of static.

l'm an inny and l'm all about the cakes. Bought a big metal winder, the sound of which could raise the dead but l love it. l knit and crochet when l'm out n about, cafes etc, and there is never room on the table for yarn, so l crochet some cake holders, put a button on the side and a button hole on the strap and they can hang from the arm of the chair or from your arm.
Heck, l've been know to craft when l'm walking, lol!
