    Eck: "Why the Mickey Mouse ears on the ISD?"
    Me: "please never say those words again."
    As for alternate placement of the shield bulbs I would suggest on the Superstructure tier at the base of the bridge right above the main turbolaser batteries or perhaps on the underside of the bridge wings. this way the angles from which they can be attacked is reduced from nearly 360 degrees to around 180. Also they are much closer to the defensive batteries and the bridge does not obscure firing angles.

    • @SephirothRyu

      Ideally, a shield system should consist of two types of parts, honestly. The emitters, which are a series of ant-lion-den looking things that get the energy-matter hybrid out there to begin with and control them enough to spread them towards near the rest of the ship. And the effectors, which manipulate the shields from behind (at least certain types of, which don't interfere) armor, and which CONTROL the shields and truly keep them stable, in-shape, and so forth.
      That is based on my limited interpretation of sci-fi shield tech in a barely-realistic sense anyway. In this case, it would likely be a shield based on something that can be called a plasma, but that is how I imagine that it would work. For shields that revolve around some form of energetically charged/controlled particle (which itself has at least some mass), anyway.
      ...Yeah, I've thought about energy shields a lot in various settings. They kind of fascinate me in the "I want them to exist" kind of way, so I try to imagine ways to have them. But well, regardless, before most sorts of energy shields, we would need at least a fusion reactor and at least some form of limited gravitics. Unless we just want a specific defense against a specific thing. Normal plasma can be good for anti-laser (i.e. real lasers) after all.

      @SephirothRyu 3 роки тому +3

      @@galvanizedgnome I mean, they are mouselike in being round and placed on the "head" so yeah, you have a point. I guess I just accidentally posted some random thoughts to this now-highly ranked comment though.
      That said, Mickey's ears definitely are oversized relative to an actual mouse's. So calling them "mouse ears" is more accurate than "Mickey ears." I will definitely let it slide though, as, well, a certain Mickey Mouse is very well known among the now-owning company of Star Wars (which seems to not know how to handle major movies, but still seems to be doing quite well for TV series on the franchise and such at least, overall. Aside from Marvel's lazy comic artists anyway).

    • @SephirothRyu
      @SephirothRyu 3 роки тому

      To follow up my original comment though, if I am to take my original comment and modify it to fit Star Wars lore and design and... etc... Then the big "mouse ears" are still needed. In addition to the "projectors" and the "affectors" I mentioned before, there would POSSIBLY need to be a third system. The "Detectors" which effectively allow the other two to actually work.
      In another universe, one might imagine that Detector function is built into one or both of the other system parts noted. But what if Star Wars tech requires them placed separately? In that case, rather that just coincidentally ALSO having sensors and radar in them, those "mouse ears" are in fact a combined suite that also contains the sensors necessary for getting the information needed to maintain shield integrity across at least the upper half of the ship. The lower half perhaps having lower profile ones. Even then, there are two of the things, so you can lose one without issue.
      Remember that this ISD thing was designed for capital ship engagements basically, and to also be a symbol of fear, that would re-assert itself any time someone actually tried to take another capital ship against it. Hence its heavy turbo-laser batteries and such, so that it would destroy the other ship first. I mean, Mega-lasers basically ended up being artillary (in a way I have my own theory of, but which is irrelevant for now), so one can assume turbo-lasers are longer range than normal ones. At least for what Star Wars calls a "laser" anyway.
      But yeah, against capital ships and perhaps last-gen-fighters, those "shield bulbs" (actually multipurpose sensor suites) might not be such a weakness. The more you "turbo" or "mega" a "laser," the more it seems to be harder to aim in one way or another. In the latter case, you even need to adjust for some strange parabolic curve.

      @@papapalps2415 droids also have built in power supplies, and tend to be physically stronger allowing them to carry more hardware. A clone trooper carrying around a battery pack is going to get tired/annoyed at lugging it around, and become combat ineffective quickly. A droid may use more energy to carry it around, but their combat effectiveness isn't on a scale, it's either 100% or 0% (not counting damage). And to get a droid from 0% to 100% is easier, just add power. Humans need sleep, food, rest and relaxation (ontop of sleep), and even then your only going to get close to 100% and it will rapidly decay downwards.
      It's a simple case of soldiers spend more time wasting time and doing busy work than actually in combat on the front lines but must be ready for combat at a moments notice, meaning full kit and gear on/nearby. This wears on them and their kit. Droids can be either in combat, or in standby, in standby they aren't draining energy or wearing out their kit, and they aren't become less effective.

    The whole "keep things away from crew because of radiation" thing exists in modern vehicles too, specifically with radar systems. Even the weather radar that's in modern airliners emits enough radiation to cause permanent injury if directly exposed at close range; that's why it's located in the plane's nose cone, pointed away from where the people are in the plane'z cabin. The radars aren't allowed to be used on the ground except in designated testing areas, where a cone over 100 feet out is cleared of all animal life to prevent injury. Being 50 feet in front of a plane when the weather radar is turned on can cause infertility in seconds, and radiation sickness in just a couple minutes. That's also why the radar on ships is located high above the deck. It creates a safe zone under the tower where directed radiation is focused above where any people can be expected to be.

      RADAR *can not* cause ARS (acute radiation syndrome) it emits *NON-ionizing* radiation, that is less dangerous than visible light.
      The only danger factor with radio waves and microwave is that in VERY high concentrations (i.e. in a microwave oven or, to a lesser extent, just in front of a very powerful radio/microwave emiter) it can heat up water in your body.
      That's it, no cancer, no radiation sickness, just heat stroke.

    An additional point about their placement on top of the bridge: not only is it a good place to avoid radiation flooding into the rest of the ship, but it's also the only such place where, if they are destroyed, nothing else on the ship will get damaged. If the shield is taken down and the generators destroyed, the rest of the ship is unharmed and can still get out of dodge. Or, bar suicide runs, even still fight at full capacity. Placing them somewhere else, like the throat of the bridge neck, means that throat might get damaged with catastrophic consequences.

    Say, if suddenly, Star Wars books going forward say shields work more akin to Squadron's, it creates it's own interesting new rules for writers and directors to work with to create cool scenes. The Essential Guides and Cross Sections books were never bibles and should never be. Before someone who plays Squadron's thinks that makes ships too weak, lets say canon is more "Danger Zone Mode" than not.
    If it's not on hard confirmed on film yet, shields can still work however it wants if it makes for more interesting combat scenes.

    I always thought those two shield generators on ISD are actually the main bridge generators/emitters combined with some radar or other sensor housings... as in, those generators protect the command tower, or more like add to the shielding of the superstructure layering over the hull shielding.
    But they could also give the ship incredible ability to direct shielding over to the side of the ship that would be the one turned towards an oponent of the same weight class.
    And now that I think of it, the ability to have two massive shield generators that are able not just project an all-around shielding in a way many small emiters would, but also direct them through the whole upper hemisphere of ISD (as well as most of the rear) might be quite a good thing with the ship's purpose and design, especially when the ship's "broadside" (the part with most overlaping gun arcs, thus the heaviest possible firepower) is actually a directly forward or even slightly upward. In that way, you can switch between heavy frontal shielding for attack and heavy rear shieldding for the few cases you might retreat, and you would need lesser amount of large shield emitters...
    I bet Lyra Wessex didn't expect this ship to fight against multiple powerful oponents, and I somewhat doubt that late Republic/early Imperial Navy would expect that too with people like Wilhuff Tarkin penning the doctrine.

    I think a point you might've overlooked is the construction & maintenance aspect of the placement. On the ISD-I/II the primary sensor array is mounted above the bridge with the shield generators on either side, now this is something that often gets overlooked in Star Wars, but ships do get damaged, wear and tear happens, and accidents and component failures due occur. Consider this, if either the shields or primary sensor array suffer a critical failure due to battle damage or a failure of a component or material, How long will it take to repair? With the ISD-I/II if the shield generators or the sensor array is so badly damaged or disabled their placement on the hull and various data and power conduits being centralized and relatively few in number mean a yard can pull off the entire assembly with a minimum of effort and swap in a good generator or array far faster than it would take to repair an embedded one. Also the Empire can construct the Generators off a centralized assembly line and then transport them to the individual "Yard"/"Gantry"/"Construction Area" that is building a ship as needed instead of assembling each unit on the ship piece by piece.
    In modern terms it's like a jetliner's engines, both Airbus and Boeing use pylon mounted engines, if a engine fails (Think the recent United Airlines Flight 328 incident) then replacing the engine with a good one while tedious is actually far easier compared to say the DC-10's Tail mounted engine. I think the concept applies to the Empire in Star Wars. Also if the placement of these generators outside the hull was such a problem why did the New Republic Starhawk-class Battleship also use the generators mounted in a external fashion? Yes I'm aware of their nature of being constructed from ISD parts, but if the New Republic felt it would be such a massive problem then there must've been an alternative. Considering they didn't move the generators to inside the hull then I think the New Republic felt that the trade-off regarding protection vs construction and maintenance was still worth making.

    • @shorewall
      @shorewall 3 роки тому

      Your example of a jetliner doesn't work. You need to compare the ISD to a battleship, because it is a warship, that is going to get shot at. And specifically, it's the shields, which protect the rest of the ship from getting shot at. So any utility from ease of repair is outweighed by the fact that it WILL get shot at, and if it fails, the whole ship will be vulnerable. For something as vital as the shields of a warship, it would pay to make sure they are as secure as can be, even if it makes it harder to get at.
      And just because the New Republic kept it doesn't make it right. It could mean that the New Republic is a dumb/lazy as the Empire. And I would bet on that, considering all the failure they propagated.

    • @MrPatrick2160
      @MrPatrick2160 3 роки тому +1

      @@shorewall Really? I thought the comparison made sense considering the Empire built over TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND (25,000) of them in just under 24 years. How else do you build that many of those ships without a streamlined construction process and a design optimized for mass production. Also only a dozen or so shipyards from what I recall had the capacity to build these massive beasts. Even if you had a full dozen shipyards constructing the ISD's each shipyard would've had to build 2,083 or 2,084 ISD's within 24 years. Think of the logistical effort and planning needed to build that many 1.6 kilometer battleships in that time frame!! Certain compromises would have to be made!
      Edit: Not only did they have to build that many ships, they also had to maintain and repair them. The closest Earth analogy I can make to that kind of building effort is the Liberty ships of WW2, and those were made intentionally as cheap as possible since if a ship made even one, ONE voyage successfully it was considered to have been worth it. The Liberty's were disposable transports almost, The ISD's were battleships meant to be the Mainstay of the Imperial Fleet.

    What is so amazing about star wars is that it's a great analogy to the absolute shift in naval warfare and war in general from WWI to WWII. Star destroyers represent the quickly obsolete tactics of fleet in line engagements. The tactic of multiple ships coordinating maneuvers of desteoyers, cruisers and basically slugging it out by naval cannons was obsolete the moment the first fighter planes without 4 wings was finished. Then, you've introduced fast and maneuverable planes that can carry torpedoes or a small number of bombs. And these multipurpose planes changdd warfare. The battleship Yamamoto, I believe, was sunk because of lack of effective anti fighter weapons. That is suppoosed to sound familiar. Modern warfare tactics in the navy now have air superiority as sacred. Carriers replaced battleships even during the war, it was a US pacific theater primary gial in WWII, air superiority. It's why the X wing was designed in the first place.

    The real flaw with the Impstars was their insufficient (and in the case of the Impstar II, complete lack of) point-defense weaponry. A couple dozen quad lasers or maybe some dual purpose light turbolasers could've made a world of difference against the Rebels' starfighter-centric doctrine. Granted, an even better option would've been to make a hyperdrive-equipped starfighter the standard fighter for the Imperial Navy so that way Imperial ships wouldn't be vulnerable in the brief moment before they could deploy their fighters (I'm not even necessarily saying they should've had the TIE Defender here, though that would've been great, just sticking a hyperdrive on a TIE Interceptor could've made a huge difference).

      They didn't even need their standard fighter to be hyper-capable; they just needed a robust, long-range, hyper-capable option of some sort. For reconnaissance purposes alone, it would have been invaluable; the Rebellion operated according to a guerrilla tactics, which meant just finding them at all was a problem. The Empire had a dearth of small, long-range patrol ships in general. In Legends they at least developed the Alpha-class Xg-1 Starwing, but in current canon they've got jack shit. The Rebellion could send their robust, long-range ships with excellent sensors to scout entire systems and sectors stealthily from a great distance, picking targets while the Empire was ignorant of them. The Empire couldn't send anything smaller than a corvette or a Gozanti, which were considerably slower and far less stealthy.

The TIE Scout in Legends is unclear if it existed before the post-Palpatine empire. In both cases, they're far less efficient and effective than simply having a dedicated long-range, robust starfighter model suitable for patrol and recon. You wouldn't replace the standard TIE line; you'd maintain them as a specialist craft. They find the rebels; then the ISDs and the swarms of standard TIEs come in and do what they do. The Assault Gunboat in Legends filled that role admirably, although like all Imperial specialist craft in Legends (the Lancer class comes to mind) was woefully underproduced.

    • @matthewgiglia643

      @@papapalps2415 A naked probe droid costs about one-fifth what a TIE does; it's one-use transportation housing (which has to contain a hyperdrive and navicomputer) is something I can't find a cost source on, but can't be dirt cheap... and these were, again, one-use items; probe droids were not meant to be recovered and re-used. It's the expendability that makes them expensive.
      As for where the rebels are, I believe you're simply flat-out wrong. One of the central tenets of the Rebellion was that the vast bulk of their forces should be constantly mobile, constantly on the move, because locking yourself down to fixed positions meant that the Empire could find you and pound the shit out of you, the Empire always able to bring more firepower to bear. Both the old Essential Guide to Warfare and newer sources, such as the Rebel Files and the ongoing nu-Canon comic series, make this point repeatedly; mobility was life, the power of the Rebellion was in its fleet, not its fixed emplacements. It needed them, of course, but it preferred to minimize them. Indeed, as the war continued, the Rebels got MORE serious about not having fixed bases, and making the ones they did have as disposable as possible; the Rebellion was very upset that it invested so much effort into Echo Base on Hoth as their shiny new command hub, only for it to turn into an expensive target for Death Squadron.
      I'm not saying the Empire SHOULDN'T have used probe droids. They had the resources to do so. But the probe droids should have been accompanied by dedicated recon squadrons that could do things like hyper into a system, scout the entire thing while remaining somewhat hidden themselves, because they're small starfighters, and then move onto the next. This is how the Republic used the old ARC-170 against the Separatists (the ARC in that name stands for "Aggressive RECONNAISSANCE", and it worked INCREDIBLY well for that; the ARC-170 would find Separatist fleets, bases, outposts, what have you, and then the Venators would come in to do the heavy lifting. Indeed, that's how the Rebellion would scout its own targets; the A-Wings would go out and survey systems and hyperlanes looking for something tasty, and when they found it other units were called in.
      Not having a dedicated recon craft hurt the Empire badly. At the very least they should have been building or buying more CR90s and Raider-class corvettes, both excellent reconnaissance units in their own right.
      You're right that they don't make a lot of specialist craft in SW... but the Rebellion invested heavily in them, despite having fewer resources than the Empire did. Indeed, their heavy focus on specialist starfighters is what can be said to have won the war for them. And it wasn't like the Empire didn't build specialist fighters themselves; the TIE l/n IS a specialist craft. It has one purposes and one purpose only; to throw massive amounts of highly maneuverable twin-linked laser cannons at the enemy until the die. Literally everything else was stripped off it to make it more suited for that role.
      And that's fine! The Empire had nigh-infinite resources, it is PERFECTLY acceptable to make a specialist craft of that sort... but make OTHER specialist craft too, ones that fill other roles. You're the Galactic Empire. Fill your tactical and strategic blind spots. Marshal a fleet to fight the enemy you are actually fighting, rather than the one you WANT to fight. The Empire wanted to fight set-piece battles against an enemy that would obligingly commit to a conventional order of battle, where their ISD's could pound them to pieces with their turbolasers. Once it became apparent that the Rebellion wasn't going to do that, and indeed that the Rebellion would adopt a strategy of being very, very hard to find, there should have been a big investment in recon.

    -The bridge takes up a very small space of the T-superstructure
    -It looks big up close but the farther you get the more you realize how tiny it actually is
    -Tiny targets are hard to hit even if they are dead centre. Ask a dartboard
    -If you're shooting at the bridge from the front and not the ISD's centre mass you're going to miss a lot
    -Where will you even shoot the bridge from? The front where all the guns are? The side where you get broadsided? The top where the shield bulbs are a bigger target? The back where the Engines are the bigger target? Where exactly can you exploit it without the ISD going unga bunga on you?
    -Real-life WW2 ships had bridges that were bombarded from on high all the time and the ships kept ongoing. Ignoring that little inconsistency in Ep VII
    -The bridge is a good simple countermeasure against ECM warfare and since the glass is as hard as the rest of the hull it's no problem
    Tl;DR Besides the giant engines of the back that's the flaw of all human ships, no under belly guns, the questionable quality of TIE fighters, and a few lacking point defense systems how exactly is an ISD lacking in logic again? Because the bridge is not one of them

    The Mon Cals not only use multiple shield generators, but a bit of subterfuge as well. The shield generators are held in the "blisters" covering the hull. However, they're identical to the literally hundreds across the ship holding various systems and their distribution probably varied from ship to ship given how customizable they were. So, the enemy couldn't just hammer at a known location to get at them. Not only were their many redundancies, there were countless decoys.
    I think the issue was having a single pair of large generators so exposed on an already exposed structure. It might make sense when you just need to stick somewhere they can do their job from as you cover the ship with as many guns possible, but it just shows the weakness in Imperial doctrine was concentrating on capital ships and not fighters. Fighters especially could park themselves in a blind spot of the guns and hammer at the shield immediately around the shields to either take it down or force that area to be reinforced weakening the shields elsewhere for more fighters to strike.
    There are times I wonder if the Empire and Rebellion think in the opposite roll they play. The Alliance fleet is designed to be versatile and take on a wide range of missions more like the navy of a superpower. Meanwhile, the Imperial Starfleet is designed for little more than terrorism with seemingly little room for flexibility. In X-Wing Alliance, there were two campaigns where the Rebellion was essentially doing law enforcement with the Empire playing the role of criminals in one of them.

    In a lot of schematics for ships from Star Wars, shield projectors are a lot of the times positioned in areas that are away from the body of the ship. Most ships with wings has the shield projectors along the length of the wings, supposedly this allows greater coverage of the ship. It is also mentioned in some sources that the shields could be projected, perhaps them being high would allow larger field of area to project the shields for additional protection on a large ship. On a side note, every bridge seems to be exposed to some extent in Star Wars. Every bridge has a large window to see out from. I think if you know where the bridge is on any ship, from the front, it would be just as easy to take out the bridge of any ship. I would like to think that there is a reason that bridges in Star Wars are all exposed(besides movie space drop reasons). There is a lot of ships with stealth style technology that makes sensors useless and perhaps the exposed bridge is a way to help counter that to allow commanders to use their own eyes to see targets that would be hidden. Slave 1 is a good example of amazing Stealth, look how close it followed the Millennium Falcon without anyone on board knowing that Slave 1 was tracking it from the Star Destroyers trash in Empire Strikes Back. Also the Victory 1 Star Destroyer is possibly the closest thing to a Destroyer in Star Wars with the retarded amount of capital sized concussion missiles, It was made to destroy other capital ships(probably why it wasn't that fast either, didn't really need to be that fast.) These are my thoughts on this stuff lol. Just wanted to share. Can't unsee Micky Mouse ears now.

    Going as far back as the ancient "Rebel Assault" (iirc) game that the TIE Phantom debut in: the ISD had the 2 main shield projector domes, and a series of smaller field shaping projectors in the trench down each side of the hull, protected by some point defence guns, or at least guns desperately used as point defense.

    Ease of maintenance has been my firm belief since day 1. The only way the generators would be in danger is if all the the emitters in the area went offline, which given the speed (a couple minutes) at which backup circuits can be brought online is unlikely unless the sheer ammount of fire the ship is taking outstrips the ability of the reactor to keep the generators charged, in which case their loss will probably be the least of your problems. Interior generator fittings are fairly common in early or private designs (the Acclamators having theirs necelled next to their reactor core) but taking days or weeks to deal with when they wear out, while disconnecting and replacing the ones on an ISD can be done in a day or 2.
    The exposed bridge may not be a weakness but a calculated choice in line with the situation faced by real world designers. Early battleships had extremely heavily armored bridges for fairly obvious reasons. However, much to their annoyance Naval officers would choose to command from the exterior so they could observe the battle more easily. Eventually, designers bent to this trend and started adding second, unarmored bridges near the top of the superstructure with all the communication relays needed coordinate the entire ship and lots of windows to see both the enemy and a large portion of their own ship. So while the ISD's tower does say shoot me here, its is quite possible the added situational awareness was considered worth it by officers. The large rear blind spot in favor of maximizing the firepower that could be brought against a target in the foward arc being another "weakness" that is simple a compromise.

      They where never intended to be shields in the first place. They are sensors or "radar domes" according to people who worked with the films. • @Mr-Tibbster
    @Mr-Tibbster 3 роки тому

    That's the conclusion I came to, the generators project the shields, and it's simply a matter of constant bombardment to deplete the shields before blowing the generators so they can't recharge. As for the bridge system, I always figured the logic was that if all the controls to the ship were blasted, it then becomes inoperable and out of control, the systems shut down. When life support is shot out it also causes havoc (oxygen, artificial gravity and such), etc. The old Rogue Squadron games did a good job of this when you see the ships begin to just descend toward the nearest source of gravity and free fall, same as in ROTJ and the Executor.

    An interesting video
    I think the Empire was more interested in simplicity than redundancy. They genuinely didn't think they would come across a force that would be able to get through the shields in the first place. By having only two emitters, you simplify the power supply systems, the cooling systems and the command systems for the shields.
    I also have a theory: shields need or work better with line of sight.
    So, by having the shields on top of the bridge tower, you can get good coverage of the dorsal, flanks and aft. For the bow and ventral, maybe they have reflectors or repeaters that can redirect the shield to cover those areas. Again, by having only 2 shield emitters, you can get away with fewer repeaters.

    Yea, having played squadrons, the ISD shields are pretty damn well protected as Eck stated. Not only do you need to fly past a LOT of cannons to get at them, but in order to get the most time on target you can't skim over the ships surface which means that ALL of the top mounted cannons can fire upon you.

I have gotten behind the bridge support and been able to blast away at the generators with laser or rocket pods without issues clearing the back of the bridge structure while in the PDW blind spots. Fighters find me a sitting duck if I hang around too long but a quick hit long enough to take a chunk or disable one generator is plausible on the levels I play at least.

Besides you can have really good armour, bullet impacts still impart considerable force, causing trauma and soft tissue damage underneath (kevlar vests stop bullets, those bullets still break ribs). So considering that, imagine the effects of an enemy who can put 10-20 rounds into your face (even if they don't penentrate), I doubt you'll be conscious. There are very few effective SW slug throwers, and those that are basically decimate everything compared to a standard blaster.

    Probably a CB radio antenna on a car is an apt analogue: for it to function, you have to have it mounted on the roof of the car, not buried somewhere deep inside it; kind of same thing here - for the generator to project the shield around the ship, it has to be somewhere outside.
    BTW, there is a simple way to rationalize the exposed design of the bridge on the ISD; it would've made sense if the bridge was the only habitable part of the ship, and the rest of it (the "wedge" itself) was completely automated - e.g. because of radiation hazard (would've saved a lot of energy on life support systems, as well). But, it doesn't seem to be possible within the established SW canon.
