  • Raymond Massey from Pearl presents the Midtown Series 4-piece shell pack (in the Black Gold Sparkle finish). This 4-piece shell pack squeezes into the tiniest corner of a stage or practice room to deliver hard-hitting rhythms without hogging the space. The Pearl Midtown is made from lively 6-ply poplar and sounds surprisingly big for its size: the kick is punchy and warm, toms are full and responsive, and the snare is crisp and polite to pop through a mix without dominating it. An included drum riser elevates your bass drum off the ground for a rounder tone and better pedal compatibility.

    I have this kit and have it tuned lower. Sounds amazing. Competes surprisingly with my Gretsch Renown

    For anyone thinking about buying this kit, I can say after giggin with it for two years that it is perfectly capabble. You can tune it pretty low. I use an evans hydraulic on the rack tom and an evans EC2 on the floor tom, with some gaff tape on the bottom head and some cotton balls in the shell. I forget what the bottom heads are, but on both toms they are coated evans. The snare is good too. I put an evans geners dry on top and an evans level 360 head on the reso side, as well as some puresound 20 strand wires. An evans emad on the kick with the stock reso head on. This thing will go low in tuning, but be aware that you wont get as much volume and projection from such small drums (which can be grest when you are playing small venues). The rack tome loses tune quickly, and the boxy dimensions of the floor tom can make the tuning a little tricky at first. I love this kit and only recently swapped the snare for another pearl snare. This kit goes great with Pearl's lightweight convertible series stands. Check it out!

      This kit is catered towards jazz drummers so it makes sense that they tune it high.

      Mine is tuned all the way down. Besiddes the snare which I like rather high-tuned. Sounds good.

      Hopefully this response help. I know it's been a year. Maybe it'll help someone? The midtown is designed fir the gigging drummer who played small venues, ie coffee shops, diy venues, etc. The construction is similar to the export series in my opinion having played both. Super durable and sounds incredible. Forgive me I forgot what wood it uses. I think birch. The roadshow, is a great set for beginner's the bearing edge is that perfect 45 degree angle so it's easy to tune, the hardware isfurable for the drummer who isn't giving to much/learning. The one flaw with the road show is the material. It uses a poplar birch mix which makes it ready fir young kids beating on it, or made for low end tours with a snack budget. I do not recommend recording, but live shows it works great. Hopefully that helps you if not hopefully someone! Best wishes!

    Having owned both the Midtown and a Breakbeats.. the nod goes to Ludwig for punchier sound. The Pearls are nice. Great build quality as is the case with all Pearl gear..however, I would opt for the Ludwigs if you were inclined to do more rock etc.

      @rhythmista7707 7 років тому +9

      MooDog15G--Nonsense.. I've been a Ludwig guy for years, and i think Pearl's Midtown is better quality both in the hardware and shell construction. Ludwig's quality control is awful when it comes to their low budget/beginner line kits. Pearl's hardware and construction is superior to Ludwig's in almost every aspect.. The flat base to tripod conversion stands are genius, practical, and wins over Ludwig's atlas flat base stands.. Ludwigs Atlas hardware is nice, sturdy and pretty solid, and they get points for the 360 ATLAS gearless tilter and all of their mounts. But even though Pearl has none of this, the solidity of their low budget and high end hardware is second to none..I bought the Atlas bass drum pedal and hi hat stand when they came out and thought they were great. However, the kick pedal started squeaking after a few hours of play, and became sluggish.
      This was even before i gigged with it, which i never ended up doing anyway.. It went straight back to the shop, and i got the Pearl Eliminator. I haven't looked back since. ! 1 year of constant gigging and still smooth as butter, and noiseless.. Ludwig has had some hits with mid range lines like their Epic series, and the Special Edition vintage kits like the Club Date, Fab 22 and Downbeat SE kits.. Pro quality and vintage tone at an affordable price.
      But i'm afraid they don't have that anymore.. Their new Evolution Maple is nothing of the sort.. 4 finishes and the hardware looks real low end..
      Whatever the case, at the end of the day, personal preference and opinion is all subjective. I think that most DW kits sound like cardboard boxes, but Sonor Pearl and Tama sound absolutely bombastic and thunderous, with tons of resonance and tone..But that's just me.. Being a drum tech for the past 19 years, as well as having played most drum manufacturers over the years, has made me quite picky.. ;)
      Peace..

      Either kit will produce basically the same tone provided heads and tuning are the same. The shell material is the same. Pearl however is much higher quality construction.

    How does this rate to the Gretsch Catalina, in quality, sound and price.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 6 років тому +2

      I have the Catalina Club Jazz, so I think that the hardware, especially the riser, on the Pearl is far superior to Catalina. Plus, the kit bag is convenient if you're gigging a fair amount, whereas the Catalina is a bit bigger and probably needs its own cases, which means you're likely to try to gig without a bag, so you'll get some road rashes pretty quick. However, the Catalina has that look that I really love. As for sound, that's more about heads and tuning than anything else. I think both can sound very professional if you know what you're doing, but the Catalina is a bit bigger, so it's going to be easier to get a lower tuning. But maybe it's just because I have the Catalina and grass is always greener, but I just think the Pearl has to be better. I love Gretsch, by the way. I just think the Catalinas are great for the price (perhaps budget for some replacement hardware) but cut some corners in order to be competitive, that's all, and the Pearl does, too, but I think Pearl does it without compromising hardware quality (by having fewer finishes, smaller sizes, no options, etc.). When I went from a Catalina to a Renown, the difference in quality was night and day, and I think it made me see the Catalina from a slightly different vantage point.

    However they recorded this video, they did it right. I can hear the subtleties of the shells. Most video demos are not like this.

    Besides being a part of the fetish for "retro" is there a functional reason to prefer flat bases on cymbal stands?

    • @Fkroll6
      @Fkroll6 8 років тому +1

      I use a mix of both... Flat bases under normal ones makes it easier to position and looks nice.

    • @tagusan8999
      @tagusan8999 8 років тому

      And flat-based stands are 2-in-1. They give you more positioning options. You get the best of both worlds.

      With my setup they work great.I use 3 of them in the flat bass and they slide under my tripods.you can get them in some pretty tight spaces,and there made very well.

      Roy Beckerman I like this better, it has a wooden hoop, and the Ludwig has a plastic hoop. the snare is 1 inch smaller than the Ludwig but it can still be tuned pretty low and sound good. I personally like the finish of the pearl too it looks amazing in person

    there´s only one detail I find not to be so cool in this drumset...the tom holder lacks infinite adjustment, making in a bit difficult to position the tom in place...this holder has a very short tube to let the tom be positioned a bit more towards the drummer if he or she has, for example, long legs....it seems to be the same holder they use on their Export line, which always makes me think why Pearl would fail in including this so basic piece of hardware in their drumsets, since something much cooler wouldn´t necessarily be much more costful
