On step 5. I think what you were trying to say is, once that custom setting is set, you can pressed C4 and adjust your ambient light. let go of C4 button and take your picture and the fill flash will do its job if it's set on TTL.

another thing.. if your wireless flash setting on camera is set to ON the rear sync will not work
also.. if you turn on auto ISO you can preview your view finder and use Exposure comp. to adjust brightness

The fact that you can't see the effect of your settings in the viewfinder or live view any more when you have the Flash turned on makes perfect sense, especially when in ttl, because with that flash firing, you (if you set it correctly) will get a correctly lit image. The flash in itself is a setting that affects your lighting. Switch the flash off, and you see the effects of just the ambient. It's not a godox thing, it's a flash in general thing.
Flash compensation adds up in camera plus in flash. It happens on all systems. As is to be expected, but mind that it's limited to the guidenumber of the flash. So when ttl says 1/4 power and you add a total of +4 stops comp, it still won't go over 1/1 power (ie 2 stops).

Yeah that’s clear as mud 😂 What the viewfinder shows and the results you’ll get after firing said shot with flash are rarely the same and who shoots TTL? None of the photographers I know anyway 🤷‍♂️

@@markwildphotography I do- beats fumbling at the dials at crucial moments in a shitty lit party basement like the wedding I did last week.. It's just a matter of setting the ambient to +1 and the flash to - 1 stop. Aperture pref, ISO auto between an acceptable range and just at auto (minimum of 1/30), flash firing at rear of shutter. Beats missing crucial moments, and beautiful results if you ask me. Why do manual when there's so much smart software in the cam 🙆🙏🏼🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @markwildphotography
      @markwildphotography 3 роки тому +1

@@laurahompus Just on camera or off camera as well? And how would that work with an extremely high ceiling that’s blue? I find fumbling through manual renders better results than TTL can, sure technology can choose for you, but sometimes that’s not the result you’re after.

    • @laurahompus

@@markwildphotography On camera flash! In the studio (although I don't do much of that right now), I choose everything manually, starting at max shutter for the sync speed, and lowest ISO possible for the aperture I'm after.
When shooting on camera flash in ever-changing circumstances, a well lit, in-focus shot with the right mix of ambient and flash is what I'm after. Also, I use the spot metering mode that is tied to the focus spot of my Sony A7III So I always measure for the right spot and so far I've been getting exactly what I'm after :) To me, it's a matter of know how the AI thinks, so I can work my tools the way I need them to without needing to fumble with more buttons :) It's like.. you can use a hammer in multiple ways but with a little knowledge and experience I know where to grab it to smash in a nail efficiently.
Try it out for yourself! See how adjusting the flash comp and AEV comp affect your image :) like, work your way from +3 FEV and -3 AEV towards -3 FEV and +3AEV while keeping the other settings as I mentioned in my previous comment.
As for extremely high blue ceilings.. They don't really bother me much because I have a ripoff Magbounce with a colored gel (depending on the color of the ambient) on the flash, with the flash pointing upward. At the beginning per location/light situation I use a greycard to set the white balance to a value I agree with. In the specific case of the wedding I mentioned, it ended up being a mixture of different light sources with different Kelvins so you can never truly correct for all of them but I focus on skin tones looking natural in that case :)
      Hope this helps!

Sony is arguably correct to turn off "settings effects" when the flash is on camera and powered up, BUT, there should be a message in the viewfinder that this happened in order to avoid confusion. Why is it right? Because the camera viewfinder cannot show you the anticipated result including the effect of the flash. I

If you’re in continuous (af-c) the assist beam will not work. You’ll need to switch to af-s. It also will not work when used off camera with Sony for some reason.
Also, exposure comp for entire scene or ambient only is very useful for aperture priority mode. Entire scene will darken or brighten the exposure of the scene and the flash. Ambient only will only darken or brighten the exposure of the environment’s natural exposure and the flash exposure will stay the same. Only ambient will change.

The focus assist lamp is a particular red light on the front of the flash unit - if you have it shining on a dark wall you can see the unusual checker-plate pattern that the red light projects onto the wall... But if you look at the red light, it just looks like a regular red light.

This was very helpful. But I don’t fully understand my problem or why the solution worked lol. I don’t use a flash that often as I mostly do landscape photography. I took out my flash after not using it for a couple of months and must of hit something. I’m used to just hitting between manual, ttl, and multi, but my flash started jumping to the master/slave screen and I couldn’t use it properly or change the flash power. It was really frustrating. I didn’t even notice the message on the flash at first because I’m usually looking through the camera viewfinder. Anyway, it must’ve been my camera settings, and after matching them to yours they it seems to work. So thank you.

Problem with the damn Godox V860 II-S and generally all the Sony Multi Interface shoe flashes is the Multi Interface shoe itself. The plastic MI shoe is flimsy as hell and it doesn't fit into most generic cold shoes such as the shoe on my Custom Brackets FR-Pro rotating bracket. I could not find an accessory cold shoe which would allow solid mounting of the V860 II-S so, I replaced the V860 II-S with the Flashpoint Zoom manual flash. No TTL but the flash mounts solidly because it doesn't have the plastic shoe, rather a generic metal hotshoe...
I wish Godox would come out with an accessory shoe plate for the v860 II-S to convert the flimsy hotshoe into a screw mount. They provide a hotshoe to screw mount conversion plate for the TTL360 but, the TTL360 is a bit heavy for a hand held bracket...
Although I did fabricate - one see this:

Thanks for the insight. I personally haven’t ran into any issues yet with the Godox mounts. But I can see how the plastic shoe could be problematic when damaged.

Hello, I am unhappy with the viewing mode that switches to automatic when connecting a flash, it disorients me about the real exposure, in a report, I cannot turn the flash on and off, it should be the user's choice as to how they want to see it and not the camera's choice, It would be a simple firmware update, the automatic vision mode, if you have a dark background it lightens the image and if you have a figure in front it leaves it white, dazzling the eye 😖

Hi Manuel, sorry for a very beginner question, but I am looking into this flash for my Sony A7iii. Can you please advise if the X1T-S transmitter is needed or not? On B&H there's an option with and without the transmitter. I am not sure if I really need the transmitter. My main use is portrait photography while traveling and the flash will be on top of my A7iii body most of the time.

    • @manuelmartelphotography

I personally like to have a transceiver myself. Godox have receiver built in them so all you you need is a transmitter to trigger them. It makes a world of difference to be able to move my light sources around. I would purchase the xpro or xt1 serie for the flash.

Hi Arjun, sorry to hear you have issue. I had another viewer who mentioned that he had problems with the recycling time. He move the connection in the hotshoe to have quicker burst. Perhaps you will need to move it a little in the hotshoe or perhaps you have a defective unit. Also I am sorry if I state the obvious but make sure you buy the right flash for your camera brand. V860-S for Sony, -C for Canon, etc. I would contact your retailer for a replacement.

The only problem i have with those flashes, (except that i had overheats twice in two different events) is that they loose the connection with the camera all the time, i have 3 units v860 ii i've used them all three in a7iii, a6500, a6000 after a while i get the message in the screen that this accessory is not supported etc. also if you move the head a bit to bounce the flash or to change the angle of the head it happens 7/10 i want to try a sony flash to see if that happens also. EDIT** after tests with my older a6000 and a6500 it works fine even with hard pulling of the head, but the a7iii looses connection very easily.

First you need to find out if it is compatible with your camera body. You can look online on the official Godox website. Then its a matter to connect the speedlite to the hotshoe on your camera.

Thanks for the video. What lens do you have installed? Is it Tamron 35 1.4 SP for Canon with Sigma MC-11? Please tell some words about this combo.

Hi, the combo is actually a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 g2 for Canon with the Sigma MC-11paired with the a7III. The af of the lens had to be adjusted with the Tap in console. Once setup properly I will say that this lens is a beast at a very pleasing price point. I use it for so many type of photography in many conditions. I don’t have access to all of the af modes but the one I can use works really well. Eye af is one of my favourite! I would recommend buying native or lens built for Sony but this combo works great if you own Canon type glass.

I’ve tried and followed everything you did but my camera and flash just doesn’t communicate well.

I had issues using my flash when my a7III was on silent shooting mode. Turning it off fixed my problems.

Reymarkable P Are you getting over and under exposures? I get serious exposure issues if I bounce the flash in TTL on my a7iii. Anyone else? I never use a flash straight on (which seems to expose correctly for some reason). Only when bouncing is it way off.

I can’t say as I am using the a7III. Maybe some one who watched the video can answer.

Manuel Martel Does the TTL work when bouncing the flash off of a wall or ceiling? Does it still give correct exposure? Mine correctly exposes when pointed straight at the subject but when I bounce it in TTL it is wildly inaccurate. Please confirm your own findings for me?
