  • Follow along with Jennifer to learn how to make this classic Bubble Quilt (also known as a puff quilt or biscuit quilt) with a cute ruffled edge! Check below for links to the products mentioned in this video.
    The backing is sewn to the quilt when the ruffles are added (reference our free download for ruffle instructions and learn how to add the backing). The dimensions of the backing will depend on the number of blocks you choose to include in your project. Measure the height and width of the quilt after all blocks have been sewn together to find the dimensions of the backing!

    Just a suggestion, if you sew the pockets that contain the filling into a strip side by side first and then stuff them it's much easier . Then sew all the tops shut in one row of stitching. Add the next empty row of pockets and repeat.

      You could even sew two empty rows together, back to back and then stuff each and sew shut, this means you would only have to sew half as many "stuffed" row seams together, Thanks Nanna!

    Jennifer I knew a lady who made the puff quilts back in the early 1970's era and it is an old quilt pattern. She made a queen size quilt out of the puffs. A few years ago I saw a girl wearing a puff jacket in black color - very small puffs and really nice. She was really slim and it looked fabulous on her.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 років тому

      That is so cool to hear! A queen size quilt would use a lot of puffs- but it would be gorgeous!

    • @TheJules1003
      @TheJules1003 8 років тому

      Yes the queen size quilt sure would use a lot of fabric but it is worth the bother. I have seen a thing that goes in the crib to protect the baby's head (I forget the name of it) but someone made one out of puffs and it looked beautiful. I saw a girl with a black puff jacket with tiny puffs and it was beautiful. The ideas are boundless. Puff quilts have been in since at least the 1970's and I know because I went to school with the woman in question when she got married she made one for her bed a queen size and very beautiful. I live in Canada and the lady is now in the US since quite a number of years with her husband.

    The first quilt I ever made was a Bubble Quilt. In 1976. It was in different shades of blue. It was so much work and cost way more than I could afford at that time. I gifted it to my inlaws for Christmas, and never saw it again. LOL! Never again!!

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  4 роки тому

      Oh no!! That's so sad! Hopefully they liked it though. These quilts are such an investment of time, but they're becoming so popular again. We're seeing them at baby showers and being given as Christmas gifts to little ones. - Morgan

    Years (decades) have gone by and still I've not made one of these! So, tonight - finding your tutorial, I am most grateful for the reminder.
    I wish I had saved all of my children's t-shirts - and could make a puff quilt for each of them out of their own t-shirts.

    Thank you again Jen for this awesome video! Since I made my 1st bubble quilt, I have shared your video on Facebook many times even as far away as Australia! I bought a 5 LB box of the Poly-Fill to begin with. The quilt I made will fit a twin size bed. I also have made 3-12X16 bubble pillows. I still have enough of the poly-fil to make another twin size quilt.

    Cute quilt Jennifer! To cut cost of project use a muslin for that back of the puffy block, use a scant 1/4” seam to reduce losing the finish size of block, and consider using a gathering foot instead of making a tuck.

    wow, I was searching to find out how to make a puffed cushion for my computer chair, I saw 2 tutorials which included ripping the backs of each square ( i dont want to hand sew, if i can avoid it I will ! but your method looks so much easier. I love love love this baby crib quilt but no-one is expecting right now!, if I remove the ruffle and replace it with binding and a backing fabric theres the cushion I was wanting to make thanks for making this look so achievable I willbe giving it a try in April and sending in a pic of the result xx

    Your video is truly THE BEST on how to make a bubble quilt! I hate to admit it but at 69 years of age I have never seen one. I am a seamstress and all of the instructions I saw before looked very complicated and time consuming until I saw your video! What size bag of Poly-Fil would I need to do a 36"X60" quilt? and What is the best brand to buy to keep the Poly-Fil from bunching up when washed? I am so excited to get started on one for my newest granddaughter! I think I'm going to zig-zag the edges of each bubble for added endurance during washing over a long period of time.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  7 років тому +1

      It's hard to say how much polyfil you'll need because we just keep going until we don't need anymore :) As far as the bunching, there will always be a little adjusting to do after washing these puff quilts so just grab your favorite brand! Zig-zagging the edges of the puffs is a great idea!

      Thanks for watching LindieLee! You can wash it on a delicate cycle and either tumble dry with no heat or low heat for best "puffiness". You may still have to fluff the filling a bit after a wash. You might even try tossing a few tennis balls in during the tumble dry; I know that works well for down comforters.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  6 років тому +1

      Great question! You will want your backing to measure the exact same as your top and then you can follow these instructions for how to add the ruffle and backing: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/BubbleQuilt_forDownload.pdf
      To make it so the backing is not loose from the top, you can tac stitch at the corners of some of the bubbles after the backing is on :)

  • @karenlautzenheiser2003
    @karenlautzenheiser2003 7 років тому +2

    I have a question about the backing. After you sew it on and finish the opening, do you do any quilting to hold the backing from just being loose , maybe tie quilting or something like that? It would seem to be unfinished without something. Thanks! Love your tutorials!!

    Love the demonstration. I wish you had shown the back “reverse side” of the Quilt with the finished product. Reason, I wanted to see how much of the stitches and pieced together fabric seems are shown since there is no backing added to the quilt.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  2 роки тому

      We actually do add a backing to these quilts- We do not have a tutorial for that, but here is a link to both of our Bubble Quilt tutorials www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video?search=bubble+quilt - both of the Free Download instructions tell you that we added a backing by placing the fabric on the front side of the quilt (right sides together) and sewing then turning it around. We did not go over it with quilting, so it's only stitched on the edges. If you're going to add batting inbetween the layers, we would recommend stitching the batting down to the backing prior to stitching. I do hope this makes sense! Please let us know if you have any more questions. -Michelle

    Wow... this is awesome... never thot about a ruffle... but instead of following my original pattern which incorporated a border will do the ruffle instead...wow... just awesome... now i noticed in my pattern the center of the puff squares are either tied with yarn or a button is sewn... is it really necessary? Will i need to quilt so that the backing stay in place....? My thinking is if i tie the puffs that old be enof quilting.... I would appreciate ur suggestions... meanwhile i will go to ur website and download ur pattern... many thanks or this video... really clears the air for me.... blessings...

    • @ShabbyFabrics

      So you will need to tack down the front of the quilt to the backing in order to make sure it stays in place, otherwise they will billow apart from each other. You can just use your machine to add a couple of stitches at some of the corners of your puffs to stitch the top together with the backing (it isn't at all necessary to tack down every single corner, but you can do that, too). Hopefully that helps clear up some confusion!

      You can tac it in place in the corners of the blocks with a few stitches or sew squares around each "puff" to keep it in place. It is really up to you :)

    This is a wonderful tutorial!!!! I have owned two puff top king size bed spreads in the 30+ yrs that my husband and I have been married and I am in need of another one as they sure do help to keep one warm as well as being unusual and pretty too. I have had no luck in finding one on line from a trustworthy company so it looks like I am going to need to TRY and make one, you make this look so easy!!!! can you tell me for a California King what the measurements would be? Also.. I need to know how to add the three tier ruffle's for the bottom all the way around please??? thank you, Sheila

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  6 років тому

      A king size quilt (will also fit Cali-king) is about 110" x 108" but you can make it square with this quilt method. You will need to make it 24 blocks x 24 blocks or a bit smaller since you want ruffles. As for the 3-tiered ruffles, we do not have specific instructions on how to complete that but you could layer the ruffles around the edge of this if you want layers right on top of eachother.

    how do you cover the raw edges in the back of the quilt when sewing the the puffs together? The fabric is lovely.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  7 років тому +1

      The backing is sewn to the quilt when the ruffles are added (see free download for ruffle instructions and how to add backing). The dimensions of the backing will depend on the number of blocks you choose to include in your project. Measure the height and width of the quilt after all blocks have been sewn together to find the dimensions of the backing! Hopefully that helps clear it up :)

    Call me a dummy but i still dont get how to put the ruffle on. Can u do another video showing exactly how? And you're not specific about which way the fabric is facing when making the blocks. Like if i take the 5 in piece on top with the right side facing out and the 4.5 in piece on the bottom with the right side facing out wouldnt that automatically make a back to the quilt? So then is there a need for a back? I need help and seeing it would really help. Nothing about the back is explained in this video but i love the quilt!

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  6 років тому

      The information about the backing can be found in the description box below the video :) You are correct, the fabrics are both facing out when the blocks are assembled, which creates seams on the back.

    I went through several comments in hopes of finding my answers to: How many charm packs would I need to make a queen quilt? Also, do you sell the white 4 inch backings in charm packs. Appreciate your help. I want to make my daughter one for her bed.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  8 років тому

      An average queen size quilt is 86"x93" so you would need APPROXIMATELY 19 squares across and 21 squares down to achieve that width. This would be 399 squares so 10 packs will definitely give you enough squares with some to spare! We do not sell the 4" backings in charm packs since those only measure 5"x5". It would be best to buy a larger pieces of fabric and cut it down to 4" squares. Let me know if you need any additional information :)

    As the backs of the puffs are never seen (covered by backing), could one use scraps for the 4 1/2 inch puff-backs? Or might they show through the backing fabric?

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  4 роки тому

      You can do that! You would want to consider that when choosing your backing fabric. Maybe go for a darker backing or be sure to add some interfacing or extra batting to help hide the scraps. - Morgan
