QUITTING His Job! 1 YEAR Later ► Chasing His Dreams & First Season Debrief!

  • Most of you guys know that Brandon quit his job almost a year ago now and started his own business named Envision Landscape Solutions. We were out and about filming our winterizing video and when we had a few spare minutes at the end, we decided to flip the camera on and shoot this end of year debrief!
Brandon and I have known each other literally 20 years, growing up together as he was my neighbor a few houses down. Brandon was there from the beginning watching my story and me starting my business, so it was no surprise that one day he would probably follow suit.
If you guys don't know, Brandon had a background doing concrete and although thankful for the job, just couldn't stand the dead end prospects of that career. After a few years of planting the seed, and Brandon consuming everything he could get his hands on, 2018 was the year he threw off the ropes and decided to set sail on his new adventure: starting his own company.
This video could've honestly been 2 hours long, chalked full of helpful tips and ideas. I wanted to shoot this video just to inspire those out there who are on the fence or thinking about starting their own company, and could maybe learn from Brandon's journey.
I know this one will inspire a lot of you guys out there, especially you younger guys! Hopefully you enjoyed seeing Brandon's journey this year and see how much he's grown and changed this year. If you're thinking about starting your own company, my attitude is do it. What are you waiting for?

Hey guys, lot of you were asking for an update on Brandon’s first season and going full time.
We could’ve talked for an hour with funny stories, lessons learned, etc. Hope this one inspires you a little if you’re thinking about doing your own thing next spring!

Definitely the best video out there right now on starting a landscaping business. It's great that you exposed the myth that owning a business was easy and that there's much more than 40hrs that goes into it! Brandon, congratulations on totally crushing it in 2018, and I know that you will do the same this upcoming season! :D

The biggest thing that sucked for me starting out that you guys can relate to.. Raising 2 kids, being the main breadwinner .... when you actually get home (working out of home) you aren't done. But your GF wife kids animals all see you back and home and expect husband, daddy, owner when you aren't done.... You have 4 calls to make, 30 min of research to do, an hour of maintenance to do......but you can't explain that to them. And they won't understand. A supportive GF or wife (or be single) is a huuuuuuuggeeeee part of success and happiness in self employed lifestyle.

Great point, as much as i dont like my 9-5 job I still make great money and then get to come home and hang out with my kids, plus every weekend as well. If I was a single guy or had no children then this would be the career for me.

Brandon, congratulations on your 1st year. When I was 20 I caught the entrepreneur/self-employment bug then life happened and I didn't think about it again until I was 30. It hit me really hard at that point and I was on it from that point. Still took me about 6 years to really get it going after I took a horticulture course at the local community college. I wished I had pursued it more when I was your age but, nevertheless, I'm glad that I at least started to when I did. Looking forward to crushing it this year. Keep the blinders on fellas!!

I too walked away from a good paying job to start my Lawncare biz. I was sick of making a crap load of money for someone else. I was also really nervous about what I was about to do but as I got started on my own, I discovered something amazing. I started LOVING what I call The Hustle! Servicing accounts, making clients, scheduling jobs, meeting with new customers. Machine maintenance, invoices, proposals, you name it. All of it. Yeah, you work more hours but for me, it feels like fewer hours because you love it! Thanks for sharing Brandon and have a great 2019!!

Way to go Brandon, I’m starting into my 15 th season , I’m still as giddy about this now as you are I guess that’s why I’m watching this tonight. Being self employed is hard , but so great. I started at 35 years old, four kids and had a mortgage . That’s incentive to work hard . I still love it . You boys keep up the good work. I really like the bit about clients and costumers. Looking forward to seeing your success this year!!

Hey brother I just turned 37 and I'm working 60+ hrs a week at my job its getting old, been watching Brian's videos for a few days and for the last 2 months I've had the idea to start my own lawn care business I live in a small town 4000 pop but not many mowing so I'm giving it a shot on weekends this year!! I have the money to invest but not sure what things are essential and how to get the most out of a client work wise since I live in a small town. If u have an opinion I'd love to hear from you. 🌿😎🌿

Tony Light people like to higher people they know. Once people know you or there is someone in town to do lawn / yard work you will get work . Advertise a bit . Do good work . You will get some work no doubt . Bigger companies are interested in working in small towns . You would be surprised how much work is in that small town. Good luck . I have a little UA-cam channel and I talk a bit about starting out. Maybe check that out

I spent all winter (so far) and a bunch of money buying everything needed to get started in lawn care. New zero turn push mower weed eater back pack blower and trailer everything bought in 2018 and and paid for so no debt. I have 3 days a week off working full time as a chef. So I plain on starting on the side of course. I also have a back up plain to keep customers if its raining etc on my days off. I got a buddy that mows his on mowers and all and if I can get to em I will sub them to him and even know I dont get paid for it I keep the customer happy and keep the lawn. Very excited to get out and mow! thought about filming it from the start but think it will slow me down to much. Pretty much why I dont have car event videos it takes up to much time.

I’m a teacher full-time and just recently moved from GA to KY and plan to sell all my equipment. Let me know if you are interested and I can send you some pics. I’ve also got a Stand-on Ferris Z1 SRS bought last year as well with 21 hours on it. Hate to be leaving the business but balancing teaching and running/operating a successful lawn service with family time was tough. Let me know if you’re interested though 270-401-7989

After 20 years in business and never having to advertise in a highly competitive retriever training industry, and winning literally every award the AKC had to offer, I want to tell both something. Brandon and Brian, you guys are on the right track. Zeal with wisdom is an almost impossible combination to beat in any realm. However if you want business wisdom and market knowledge that is out of this world, you’ll need some business wisdom from your Father. If you tap into this, you will know what can’t be known and move ahead of everyone. Devin... sounds like you are 3/4 the way there with the right equipment. Probably do some advertising and just plan to be part time your first year. Another approach (beside advertising in our local news paper) is I have bought clients from several small lawn care companies going out of business. (Check Craigslist, and also stay in touch with your local lawn equipment shops about this. The local shops tipped me off to both of these companies quitting biz. I contacted the owners, set up a meeting, arranged 15% to 20% of the first year mowing income, payable throughout the summer. They then wrote a letter to all clients telling them their biz was transitioning to me, and highly recommended me.) Price to mow stayed the same, that first year. Worked great! Good success!

I have a question, but first I want to thank you both for being one of the biggest inspirations to me next to my wife. Please keep the video coming as I have learned so much from you. So my question is how do you cover time off or vacations if you are just starting out and running solo for the time being? Who covers your properties or how do you tell the customer?

Wow! Really enjoy the information you guys are sharing! Its great to know the "fears" that everyone has to overcome. I think it was from Tim Ferris podcast but the 2 hardest things to quit is crack and a weekly paycheck! I'm hoping to do the same thing as Brandon and at the right moment quit the weekly paycheck and hit it hard in 2019! The more I've listened to entrepreneurs the more the same reoccurring theme is heard. You just have to make the jump one day and believe your going to make it. Video's like these help to provide that push and I really appreciate it! Keep it up!!!

Hey Brian, Loved the video as always. Have been watching for some time now and I know this is a old video but Id love to see some more videos about the back end of the business. You do alot about the day to day work. So can you cover somethings like invoicing, billing, and all the small details that people looking to start a company like myself know what to look for and do.

Hey Brian. I recently started watching a lot of your videos and I'm planning on starting a lawn care business this year too. One main trend I'm seeing a lot is marketing. What would be your tips to make a good post card or flyer? I'm 15 by the way.
    Happy New year!

I hadn't subscribed yet, but I will now because of your comment about believing in capitalism and free enterprise. You stand for what is great about America and I wish you the best season yet!

it's 11:39 p.m. and I'm doing invoices.. after being in the truck salting for the past 4 hours !
Invoices are a pain , but customers that pay late are the worst!!

Great pep talk! In the end, being self-employed isn't for everyone. Having the drive and self-confidence it takes - is what it is. The market is competitive. That was my first realization and it came from looking at "time on the job" to get it done. Ya gotta haul ass to be competitive. Then, come all the other factors of running a successful enterprise. That's a long learning curve. Which direction to take it, what type of accounts, what equipment, how large a crew - a lot of decisions and strategy involved.
This is good and informative to a guy starting out to get them thinking about things they would have never considered. Sharing this is invaluable to stimulate thought. The advise on marketing at 11:30 is imperative. Ya gotta promote it and keep promoting it. I see many small businesses get stuck in a rut. They grow large enough to survive and stop at the first level plateau and struggle along, rather than push it to the next level via constant marketing. The business has to be in a constant cycle or rebirth and growth as long term steady customer base doesn't come overnight. That's the part that takes the time - and you need to survive the journey. Build the good will and brand name of the business. As that is ongoing, the crew needs to be built as well. Leads and followers, a reliable crew that can be trusted on your accounts. They represent your business, they are your business - treat them well, pay them well and demand the best from them. Pay top dollar, and don't be afraid to weed out the underperformers. Teach them how to interact with your customers to serving them directly or referring them to you.

Me and my buddy started our company 3 years ago and everything has went very smooth and works very well. Our company has doubled every year in clientele ever since. Numbers look good, overhead is very minimal and there is a lot of profit. The only thing with partnerships is it’s hard for say both owners to clear let’s say 40k to 50k a year a piece after all expenses, taxes and so forth. For me trying to figure out the numbers of what we’d have to clear gross in order to make at least that a year a piece cleared profit is mind boggling to me. What are your thoughts on partnerships knowing everything is split 50/50 and trying to make a good living at it that way?

I hear what your saying brotha. One thing I have done for the past couple of seasons while I was building my buisness was also driving Uber/Lyft. Money is decent and the flexibility( being able to work whenever you want) has been imperative for my goals. Also, being able to sit and drive after a long day of landscaping is somewhat relaxing as well. North Jersey is a good market for transportation as well. Good luck and just go for it!

I plan to stay solo, but for those who plan to eventually have employees, if you log all your jobs with how much time you spend at them solo, by the time you take on employees, you will have a good understanding for knowing how much time a job is going to take as a productive employee.---I always log my time anyways as I am always wanting to see my time to income ratio on jobs.
