I am very impressed with Berberine. Great stuff!
I began taking berberine last week as a support to another supplement for skin health. I had no idea until I saw this video what all it could do on its own. I was diagnosed with MS ten years ago and continued to take ballet classes because doing something I love keeps me moving. Last night at barre, for the first time in memory, I had zero problems remembering the combos when normally, I rely on watching the others. The teenage girls around me were getting confused because it was a bit more complex than normal and forgetting what was next, but there I was, 48 and "disabled" and having no trouble! I'm a believer.
Fantastic Heather! Very exciting! Thanks for watching.
where did you get your berberine?
@@Garden-Resell-Thrifts, I've seen it at various stores, but I ordered it off Amazon along with the other supplements except nmn which I had to get from my local health food store. It's hard to pick out each one's effects, but I've accomplished a ton in the short time I've been on the regime. My primary care doctor was seriously impressed when she saw me a couple weeks ago.
I was dx with MS in ‘07, recently pre diabetes. I’m buying Berberine tomorrow and am hopeful, with comments like yours, in seeing positive results.
@@Krise343 Best of luck! My daughter was over yesterday and commented how long I had been so healthy since I began the supplements I'm taking. I think because my digestive system is so sensitive, I avoid a lot of foods with important nutrients like wheat which I can't have at all and dairy and meat which make my stomach hurt causing me to eat very little of them. So I had to figure out what I was missing and get it that way. Since I wrote this a bit over a month ago, my arrhythmia has also stopped! I still have my referral to a cardiologist, but my guess is, it will just be a "Yup, you're fine, go enjoy your life" visit.
If you ask your doctor, he will not endorse any type of supplement if it's not a prescription drug. It's a waste of time in my opinion
Hi Serfino, thanks for the great comment!
Excelent information!!!
I am epileptic and taking Lamictal, Can I take Berberine??? I also have cerebellar atrophy and I heard it will be good for the cerebellum, but do not want it to interfere with seizure med.
Thanks!

Hi Wilson, I don't know of any interactions, but it would be good to ask your pharmacist. Thanks for watching!! Also, for cerebellar atrophy we have had great results by eliminating gluten from the diet.

What brand should I try, specifically? Thanks, Dr. !
Hi Tony, I really like Berberine Synergy from Designs for Health. Go here to order: fullscript.link/Products
You will have to set up an account.
It is NOT without side effects though. Can lower blood sugar too much and can cause BAD constipation
What brand should I buy? Also the HCL GT or the complex?
Hi, thanks for watching! Go to the link: fullscript.link/Products and search Berberine. I really like the Berberine Synergy by Designs for Health, but there are many other great ones here. As far as HCL, both of those are fine.
Is this guy a real doctor? What is BPH again? Benign prostatic hypertrophy???
Thanks dr
Thank you so much for watching Phyliss!
There are thousands of folk remedies from the plant kingdom. We now have the tools to study them, evaluate them, find out what's in them, what benefits they offer if any, what risks or side effects they might create. In short this is a whole new branch of pharmacology open to us. IMO those medical practitioners who dismiss all of it out of hand are either stupid or are in the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies who see it as a a threat because there is little profit in it. Instead standards for purity, dosage, bioavailability should be established to achieve the same pharmacological requirements as drugs. These are considered food supplements and are therefore unregulated. Certification by independent laboratories would be reassuring but may not be legally necessary.
Great comment Mark! Thanks for watching!
@@DrJasonPickel Thank you for your comment, The most common of these supplements are just scratching the surface. Many of the familiar ones many people know about are found to have new applications just being studied. These include supplements of vitamin D3. I had a D3 level of 7. My doctor diagnosed it many years ago and now I maintain a level of 81. Vitamin B1 in the form of Benfotiamine is very useful as is vitamin B6. My body did not tolerate berberine well. Two to three pills a day sent my ALT and AST very high. At least that;s what I think. Back to one pill a day brought it down to normal. It is still preferable to Metformin which is also a plant derived medication.
I look at the ingredients in many of these expensive "cures" and research the chemistry and bioactivity of them to see which ones make the most sense. Because of their power I am extremely cautious since my doctor has never even heard of most of them although she did advise me to take melatonin. The real cutting edge is in epigenetics, the turning on and off genes through activation of sirtuins. These are scary and complex. Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard University is a pioneer in this field but it has gained a lot of interest. Even he has a lot to learn and sometimes gets it wrong. Another area is senolytics, killing senolytic cells or reverting them back to an earlier viable cell. Experts say that you do not want to destroy all of them. Resveratrol has contradictory effects at high dose and low dose. Sinclair takes 1 gram a day but it has the opposite effect of 100 mg a day. High dose resveratrol plus metformin is being experimented in cancer treatment. Of 7 sirtuin activators 1,3, and 6 are being studied. NMN is showing promising results but there are three factors that have to be dealt with to get it to work efficiently. There are other nutriceuticals that can generate NAD+ through other pathways.
I'm fascinated by all of the research and results being done as this entirely new field is exploding with activity. There are also a lot of misleading claims for expensive products that offer hope to people with illnesses that don't work so you really have to be careful. Some are very expensive. So far the most expensive one I've seen is the only activator for sirt 6 that promises to reverse aging but others also have justifiable claims based on well documented double blind trials.
It seems like DihydroBerberine (DHB) is about 5x more expensive than Berberine HCL. They say it is 5x more bioavailable but at 5x the cost which is actually better?
It interacts with some medications. It did on my synthroid. Decreased effect . Had to up my med do or a time. Stopped taking berberine.
I’ve been taking Berberine for about a month now. I take it AFTER I do a workout and 30 min BEFORE my dinner. I was hoping the Berberine would help with the sugar cravings I get when I go to bed.
It made me constipated, and I ended up gaining weight. 🤷♀
I read that Berberine is best taken before you fast, like at bedtime when there is long stretch where you won't be consuming anything.
@@rebeccahwilliams137 for what purpose though? I was always told take it a half an hour before your largest meal to avoid insulin spikes. Blood glucose levels going up. if you’re sleeping, you’re already fasting, so why take a pill for that?
@H H Type in Berberine and fasting when to take there's a user called high intensity health that will explain it better than I can.
@@rebeccahwilliams137 that’s where I ordered the Berberine. Off of his website.
@H H I ordered from wholesomestory I found that if I stop eating 6-7 pm and took berberine before bed, and resumed eating again 9-10 am I started seeing weight loss. I excercise 3-4 x a week for 30 min. I realize that not everyone is the same, I hope you find something that works for you.
After taking Berberine at 1.6 grams twice a day for two months I see no benefits whatsoever? I'm looking to reduce am blood sugar but see no improvement, No complications from taking it and maybe it is giving other benefits not realized? (Carnivore diet)

For accurate blood sugar levels, test it 1.5 to 2 hours after a meal. Thanks for watching!
I heard it isn’t that bio available though? So, I don’t get it….
Hi Arista, thanks for watching! I really have never had a problem with bioavailability. Some brands are junk though and are loaded with fillers, binders or low quality product. Is TMG the same thing?
Hi Tati, TMG is not the same thing. Great question and thanks for watching!
I take a small dose of calcium channel blocker so I wonder if this would be ok to take. Also took this years ago when I was dx’d with celiac and had very bad SIBO it really helped a lot

Vit k2 has been known to have a positive affect on calcium problems. Who would've known it could do so much good. Check out the book Vit K 2 and the Calcium paradox.
Is it safe to take Berberine while on Xeralto?😊
Hi Anne, thanks for watching! Do ask your pharmacist about this for any interactions. I have never heard of any issues.
Looks like Dr. Whitaker was right all those years ago.
LOL! Great comment! Thanks for watching Lance.
Is barberine and goji berries the same?
Great question! Berberine is extracted from various different trees including a shrub from the “berberis” family. It is completely different from goji berries, as those come from the Japanese Barberry tree. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Can you stay on berberine indefinitely ?
Hi Denise, The body will adapt to any herb/botanical over time, so I would take a break about every 90 days at least.
OK this doctor just repeating the phrase it helps with 40 times. Doesn’t tell anyone anything without some of the details behind it.. because if you have to look it up yourself then why do you need to watch a video like this? He explains nothing. He’s just reading what anybody else could’ve just researched
I started using Berberine 3 months ago. I have decreased my insulin usage by 15%. Improved my kidney function per my last blood test. Lowered the sugar spikes after meals. Continuing the testing.
Praise God for making the little bushes. I had a stroke five years ago at 45 I was perfectly healthy and boom. There have been several times during my journey I wasn't expected to live. What dosage????
Excellent! Thanks for watching Peter!
The only issue is poor absorption in the body, so 1000mg a day is best…
I have been taking metformin, 850 mg daily since last April when I was diagnosed for diabetes. It's OK; it brought down many of my glucometer readings, but it still allowed for peaks. So I started taking 500 mg berberine a day in November on top of the metformin. My overall average for readings went down, to about 93, and were consistent, never far above or below that 93. I tried increasing to 1000 mg, planning to decrease the metformin, and maybe even going up 1500 mg and eliminating the metformin. But my stomach couldn't stand the diarrhea. Also Metformin is cheap as dirt. I'm still glad about the progress though.
Great on the progress and trying. Yes, I have had a few patients that high doses irritated the stomach. I have had some patients add in Essential Fatty acids (EFA's) and Cinnamon Verum, or Chromium Nicotinate Glycinate and push their results to even a better positive. I have also put patients on a ketogenic diet or us intermittent fasting and have seen amazing results. I have seen the ketogenic diet totally resolve insulin resistance completely to where the patient went completely off meds with no problem (you don't need insulin when your body gets into ketosis). Keep it up! I like what you have been doing so far.

I started keto with intermittent fasting about a year and half ago to battle my T2D fatigue and cardio issues.
A few months ago i started having high morning glucose counts of 230 or more due to glyconeogenisis, i thought i had done something wrong in my diet but i found out its a response to low carb and sugar intake, i dont eat that stuff anymore.
So i began a berberine regiment with my other meds about 2 weeks ago and this morning my fasting glucose was 177, the lowest morning glucose i have had in past few months.
I am also a recovered alcoholic dry for 20+ years now and i cant tell you how much better i feel how energy i have and at my age i am riging bikes again, taking stairs instead of elevators, my EKGs are normal my blood pressure has normalized, im have more positive moods and interactions with others also my wife is also very happy.

As far as asking my doctor, she knows less than me about natural remedies.
So since most places that sell supps are not trustable for quality control where would we look for purity? Many folks that have the word “lab” or labs in their name seem bogus.

I got severe constipation within two weeks of starting Berberine, and my healthcare provider told me to stop taking it. But I wanted the benefits! So I watched this and other UA-cam videos on the subject and looked at my bottle. The capsules I have are 1500 mg., obviously too much. So I’ve ordered some 500 mg. capsules to start back on them.
Should not exceed 1000 mg per day.
@The Goods Hello G , stick to 500 and you will be O K .
I'm thinking about getting my berberine from the roots of the Oregon grape plant. It's got a very large amount of berberine in them. It's a very common plant that grows wild all around many places. (Including where I live) All I need is a shovel and a short walk to the woods near me. Oregon grape is really easy to find. I wonder how the 🍵 tea will taste.
When do you take the Berberine? I take it at night a half an hour before my largest meal. I have not noticed any weight loss, but it has definitely made me constipated and I’m taking less than 500 mg..
@The Goods I'm not sure. My guess would be, probably some if the stems were harvested in the spring or summer, roots would be fall or winter. I have no idea what it would taste like or what other compounds in it might do. You should research that. Oregon grape is the plant with it, that grows around where I'm at.

The Mediterranean keto diet was easy to follow and I could only stuff in enough food per day such that in 3 months I lost 30 pounds, reduced my Type 2 diabetic A1c and fasting blood sugar to normal, triglycerides went from over 500 to 138, LDL went from over 200 to 73, and HDL went from 26 to 41. Just remember, when a drug company does a study on their drugs, they get approval from the FDA by showing that their drug is better than a placebo while people continue to eat a typical crappy diet. No drug company would put their drug while eating a crap diet up against a calorically restricted Mediterranean keto diet alone because they KNOW FOR A FACT that they would lose. Not only is it easy to eat this way, it’s actually cheaper. NO ONE is making money off you being healthy. The bottom line is calories in calories out no matter what anyone says. Research suggests that those who are considered overweight or obese based on BMI are more successful in losing weight on calorically restricted low carb diets rather than diets that include an abundance of carbs because of the hormonal effects of carbohydrates on the feeling of satiation and feeding behavior. If you commit to do it, I am confident you will succeed!

Let's get into the real stuff. What does Berberine do long term??? That is the most important question. You can feel great on it for 5 years and then drop dead. What are the potential side effects of long term use? If it has been used for 3000 years, are there any papers talking about long term effects? You see, Niacin is miracle vitamin and I think it would be perfect combination with Berberine (because Niacin can sometime make people diabetic), but how all of this affects liver, kidneys. There are some info that high dose Niacin causes problems with liver and lot of other things. But yes, after years of checking stuff on internet, 3 Super Supplements that have most attention are Niacin and its metabolites, Vitamin D+K2 and Metformin (berberine - similar function). How does Berberine affect exercise? How does it affect Testosterone?? So many questions.
Hi, great questions! Like any herb, you have to take breaks about every 2 to 3 months because the body adapts, or increase dosage. Long term is no problem unlike longterm Metformin which has a long list of side effects. I have never seen research on niacin causing diabetes though. Also, because it deals with insulin resistance, aromatization decreases and testosterone increases in men. Thanks for watching and commenting!
it’s “hyperplasia”… not “hypertrophy” doc
Took my first dose of super-berb today after lunch and my BG before I ate supper was 83. I have not been under 90-something more than 2 or 3 times over the last couple of years. I'm hopeful. I take Berberine but one should always listen to medical researchers and medical doctors because like any drug or supplement there is always reason for precautions if you take other medications here is the protocol I use since I take the supplement - Continual use of berberine can impact cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in the liver which may affect drug-to-drug interactions. I quit metformin, high blood pressure and cholesterol meds 5 months ago and I am much better. Totally pissed off my doctor but he couldn't deny my numbers.
Hi Sue! That is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Thank for for your info 🙏
excellent service 👏
Just heat it up in some butter on max heat for like 10-20 seconds and then add it into rice, it's super delicious
Thanks for the tip! Great comment!
DR. PICKEL I AM SEEING THIS 1 YR. LATER. WHERE DO I GET THIS PRODUCT??? DO YOU SELL IT, YES I'VE HAD MOST OF THE ABOVE, RECOVERING A SRTOKE, RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH STG 3 KIDNEY DISEASE, TYPE 2 DIABETES, HTN, HEART DISEASE. PLZ HELP.
Hi, go here: fullscript.link/Products make an account and search for Berberine Synergy
Thanks for watching!
One thing that my naturopath told me is to take a probiotic 2hr away from the berberine because it kills off bacteria so you need to put the good bacteria back. Also right when you start you can get those side effects but it will go away within 2 weeks. It's totally worth it.
Great comment Ilana! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching Ben!
Video title..."BERBERINE - Amazing Benefits? or Worthless?". Opening line....."Berberine, it's better than we thought".
OK great, that just saved me 8.41 of my life.
Funny! Thanks for watching!
Very informative. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching!
Hi doc, i take berberine to enhancing fasting. When berberine is in mg, is it mg in dry powder or extract to follow? For example my bottle says 3000mg dry and then 200mg extract.
Hi, I do feel like the labeling of some of these herbs can be misleading. Do always go by the Extract - this is the standardized measurement. Great question!
People tale medication for their whole life,in many cases poisoning themselves,I don't see any damages in taking a natural supplement even if it will come with such sides effects
Thanks for watching and the great comment!
Your Presentation was excellent!
Thank you! I really appreciate you watching!
Increases Insulin is the last thing a Type 11 Diabetic needs. Are you positive about this? Thanks
Hi, Berberine decreases insulin resistance, so there is less need for insulin. It does not increase insulin. Coupling this with diet is the key. Thanks for watching!
But HOW does it work? On a biomechanical level..
Thanks for watching! I decreases insulin resistance among other thing. Watch this video also: ua-cam.com/video/zkfNxKYf2T4/v-deo.html
So everything but the kitchen sink? I'm very skeptical now!
Hi Steven, great comment and thanks for watching! I was also surprised with the research and benefits.
Not really, ask me why.
Do you get these same benefits from Dihydroberberine? I had to switch to Dihydroberberine as regular Berberine made me very constipated.
DHB achieves much high blood levels than berberine. It should work a lot better. Fewer side effects, too. More expensive, though.
Great Comment!
Sounds like a miracle. 🤔
I have definitely seen it change some lives. Thanks for watching Bru!
Is there such a thing as a table or chart showing what supplements shouldn’t be taken together
Hi! Thanks for watching! There really isn't and it varies so much per person. With our patients we must individualize treatment and figure out which supplements work for them and rule out interactions. Great question though.
Wow! I know people who have Parkinson's, cystic adenomyosis, cholesterol issues, insulin resistance and obesity - I'm sending them your video. I've got arrythmia and my calcium heart test was 20 so it needs to come down for my own safety. I take small doses of Eliquis and Metoprolol and I know Berberine can have an interactive effect so, I'll need to do more research and talk to my MD. I'm a little frustrated that I haven't known about this simple supplement before. How can this be, given how long this supplement has been around?
Hi Steve, great comment! Yes, I wish more people/patients would be told of alternatives. Thanks for watching!
Vit k2 has been known to have a positive affect on calcium problems. Who would've known it could do so much good. Check out the book Vit K 2 and the Calcium paradox.
So which one to take?
Mostly available to me are Berberine extract or Berberine HCL.
Hoping extract is good enough cause HCL is double, lol
Hopefully either will work for you. Keep us posted and thanks for watching!
so far berberine is helping with husbands sugar. numbers looking good .. bye bye metformin
Excellent Sandi! Great job and thanks for watching and the great comment!
Any complaints with muscle atrophy? That's what happened to me. Very reluctant to try this again of a different brand( perhaps the combination of bitter melon?)
Hi, THanks for watching! Haven't see this occur before. Test creatine kinase on blood test for sarcopenia. Keep us posted. For the muscle wasting and prevention, I would use this: optimalhealthsystems.link/Muscle-RX
How much Berberine do you suggest daily ? I’m prediabetic
Hi Vickie, I have many patients that start with the lowest dose and work their way up until no craving sweets after meals or feeling tired after meals. Thanks for watching!
How much should you take?? I’ve just started this week and only taking 1 pill a day
Hi Deborah, I would need more information. Dosage varies per patient situation. The end of this video or another that I have done on Berberine may give you more insight. Thanks for watching!
While Prediabetic took it for months didn't do anything. Became diabetic then Metformine and that drug works.
Thanks for watching Tim and your comment.
Bad cholesterol? Many people are saying that having high LDL decreases mortality.
Hi Nick, great comment! See this video: ua-cam.com/video/RBTrnIB2pK8/v-deo.html it shows how you are totally correct!
600mg 3x a day works well for me. I started with 1200mg 2x a day and had terrible diarrhea in the first week. Took a few weeks to figure it out, for me. Everybody's different when it comes to absorption so my only advice is to start slow work your way up or start high and weed your way off. Either way, best wishes! ✌️❤️💪👍💯🥩
Oops edit: I wasn't paying attention and changed the values, they're correct now HaHa 😆
Great comment Tony! You are totally right, everybody's physiology is different and absorption may vary.
@@DrJasonPickel Thanks Doc, enjoy your channel, subbed and looking forward to watching more...
I've heard that Dihydroberberine is 5x more absorbent than regular Bergerine but it's more expensive.
Ha it made me constipated! When do you take your berberine? I was told to take it a half an hour before meals. But I ended up being late and being constipated. Maybe it’s not getting absorbed all the way because I have more sugar cravings in the usual I work out a lot but when I go to bed, I am off and get out and watermelon and papaya and grapes and almond chocolate on them. It just doesn’t stop 😭I just want to get eight hours of sleep without waking up wanting frui
If a guy talks about "bad cholesterol" or "high cholesterol", I'm done and over with 😂
Great comment Rutger! See this video: ua-cam.com/video/RBTrnIB2pK8/v-deo.html you are totally right! I should have explained further in regard to that. Thanks for watching!
So what shall we do? About this pickle we find ourselves in.
Thanks for watching Zarmin! It is a pickle... 🙂
How long can you take 500 mg of Berberine?
I typically have patients take for 60 to 90 days, and then take a 2 to 4 week break. Thanks for watching!
Hello Doctor I love This information about Berberine but what I like to know where I have to go to buy please let me know Thanks
Hi Caridad, thanks for watching! Yes, go here: Go to the link: fullscript.link/Products and search Berberine
Hello Dr.
is berbeine Hcl good ?
and can we use 500mg 4x daily for max fat loss , thx.
Hi M, yes the berberine HCL is great! Thanks for watching!
🧐🧐 Sounds to good to be true? What are some cautions like heart diseases. What are some negative side effects?
Hi, great question! The research on this is great - especially compared to metformin. I rarely see any side effects, but some people, supplementing with berberine has been reported to cause gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, and stomach pain. Due to its ability to reduce blood sugar, berberine may increase the risk for hypoglycemia in high doses - blood sugars may drop too low. Usually all of this is a dosage issue, but could create the above symptoms if you have an autoimmune condition and can't tolerate Th1 stimulation. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Don't make us google you to find out your degree. Your lab coat should say D.C. I do utilize chiropractors, but you just don't have the background to be making a video like this. BTW I do take Berberine. I'm not sure what supplements are working for me, but this probably as good as the fish oil, B12, Vitamin D (been tested before and was super low despite being in the sun way too much), magnesium, zinc. Some of these, plus eating a mostly vegan diet (I do eat chicken and fish) got my weight down to the 170's (I'm over 6') and my 5-mile average walking is now at 4mph. Too bad you're in Kansas as I'm in need of a chiropractor as the last one really didn't seem to help, and my fantastic Chiropractor has passed.
Dr
What is the difference
between berberine
and bergamot
I know bergamot is a fruit
from Calabria italy
would you do a video on
bergamot if you have already
done so my apologies.
Hi Linda, Thanks for watching! They are definitely different. I think doing a video on Bergamot is a great idea and will add it to the list.
