    I began taking berberine last week as a support to another supplement for skin health. I had no idea until I saw this video what all it could do on its own. I was diagnosed with MS ten years ago and continued to take ballet classes because doing something I love keeps me moving. Last night at barre, for the first time in memory, I had zero problems remembering the combos when normally, I rely on watching the others. The teenage girls around me were getting confused because it was a bit more complex than normal and forgetting what was next, but there I was, 48 and "disabled" and having no trouble! I'm a believer.

      @@Krise343 Best of luck! My daughter was over yesterday and commented how long I had been so healthy since I began the supplements I'm taking. I think because my digestive system is so sensitive, I avoid a lot of foods with important nutrients like wheat which I can't have at all and dairy and meat which make my stomach hurt causing me to eat very little of them. So I had to figure out what I was missing and get it that way. Since I wrote this a bit over a month ago, my arrhythmia has also stopped! I still have my referral to a cardiologist, but my guess is, it will just be a "Yup, you're fine, go enjoy your life" visit.

    There are thousands of folk remedies from the plant kingdom. We now have the tools to study them, evaluate them, find out what's in them, what benefits they offer if any, what risks or side effects they might create. In short this is a whole new branch of pharmacology open to us. IMO those medical practitioners who dismiss all of it out of hand are either stupid or are in the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies who see it as a a threat because there is little profit in it. Instead standards for purity, dosage, bioavailability should be established to achieve the same pharmacological requirements as drugs. These are considered food supplements and are therefore unregulated. Certification by independent laboratories would be reassuring but may not be legally necessary.

      @@DrJasonPickel Thank you for your comment, The most common of these supplements are just scratching the surface. Many of the familiar ones many people know about are found to have new applications just being studied. These include supplements of vitamin D3. I had a D3 level of 7. My doctor diagnosed it many years ago and now I maintain a level of 81. Vitamin B1 in the form of Benfotiamine is very useful as is vitamin B6. My body did not tolerate berberine well. Two to three pills a day sent my ALT and AST very high. At least that;s what I think. Back to one pill a day brought it down to normal. It is still preferable to Metformin which is also a plant derived medication.
      I look at the ingredients in many of these expensive "cures" and research the chemistry and bioactivity of them to see which ones make the most sense. Because of their power I am extremely cautious since my doctor has never even heard of most of them although she did advise me to take melatonin. The real cutting edge is in epigenetics, the turning on and off genes through activation of sirtuins. These are scary and complex. Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard University is a pioneer in this field but it has gained a lot of interest. Even he has a lot to learn and sometimes gets it wrong. Another area is senolytics, killing senolytic cells or reverting them back to an earlier viable cell. Experts say that you do not want to destroy all of them. Resveratrol has contradictory effects at high dose and low dose. Sinclair takes 1 gram a day but it has the opposite effect of 100 mg a day. High dose resveratrol plus metformin is being experimented in cancer treatment. Of 7 sirtuin activators 1,3, and 6 are being studied. NMN is showing promising results but there are three factors that have to be dealt with to get it to work efficiently. There are other nutriceuticals that can generate NAD+ through other pathways.
      I'm fascinated by all of the research and results being done as this entirely new field is exploding with activity. There are also a lot of misleading claims for expensive products that offer hope to people with illnesses that don't work so you really have to be careful. Some are very expensive. So far the most expensive one I've seen is the only activator for sirt 6 that promises to reverse aging but others also have justifiable claims based on well documented double blind trials.

So I started taking 500 mg berberine a day in November on top of the metformin. My overall average for readings went down, to about 93, and were consistent, never far above or below that 93. I tried increasing to 1000 mg, planning to decrease the metformin, and maybe even going up 1500 mg and eliminating the metformin. But my stomach couldn't stand the diarrhea. I have also put patients on a ketogenic diet or us intermittent fasting and have seen amazing results. It's a very common plant that grows wild all around many places. (Including where I live) All I need is a shovel and a short walk to the woods near me. Oregon grape is really easy to find. I wonder how the 🍵 tea will taste.

      The Mediterranean keto diet was easy to follow and I could only stuff in enough food per day such that in 3 months I lost 30 pounds, reduced my Type 2 diabetic A1c and fasting blood sugar to normal, triglycerides went from over 500 to 138, LDL went from over 200 to 73, and HDL went from 26 to 41. Just remember, when a drug company does a study on their drugs, they get approval from the FDA by showing that their drug is better than a placebo while people continue to eat a typical crappy diet. No drug company would put their drug while eating a crap diet up against a calorically restricted Mediterranean keto diet alone because they KNOW FOR A FACT that they would lose. Not only is it easy to eat this way, it’s actually cheaper. NO ONE is making money off you being healthy. The bottom line is calories in calories out no matter what anyone says. Research suggests that those who are considered overweight or obese based on BMI are more successful in losing weight on calorically restricted low carb diets rather than diets that include an abundance of carbs because of the hormonal effects of carbohydrates on the feeling of satiation and feeding behavior. If you commit to do it, I am confident you will succeed!

    Let's get into the real stuff. What does Berberine do long term??? That is the most important question. You can feel great on it for 5 years and then drop dead. What are the potential side effects of long term use? If it has been used for 3000 years, are there any papers talking about long term effects? You see, Niacin is miracle vitamin and I think it would be perfect combination with Berberine (because Niacin can sometime make people diabetic), but how all of this affects liver, kidneys. There are some info that high dose Niacin causes problems with liver and lot of other things. But yes, after years of checking stuff on internet, 3 Super Supplements that have most attention are Niacin and its metabolites, Vitamin D+K2 and Metformin (berberine - similar function). How does Berberine affect exercise? How does it affect Testosterone?? So many questions.

    • @DrJasonPickel
      @DrJasonPickel  Рік тому

      Hi, great questions! Like any herb, you have to take breaks about every 2 to 3 months because the body adapts, or increase dosage. Long term is no problem unlike longterm Metformin which has a long list of side effects. I have never seen research on niacin causing diabetes though. Also, because it deals with insulin resistance, aromatization decreases and testosterone increases in men. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    600mg 3x a day works well for me. I started with 1200mg 2x a day and had terrible diarrhea in the first week. Took a few weeks to figure it out, for me. Everybody's different when it comes to absorption so my only advice is to start slow work your way up or start high and weed your way off. Either way, best wishes! ✌️❤️💪👍💯🥩
    Oops edit: I wasn't paying attention and changed the values, they're correct now HaHa 😆

      Great comment Tony! You are totally right, everybody's physiology is different and absorption may vary.

      I've heard that Dihydroberberine is 5x more absorbent than regular Bergerine but it's more expensive.

      Ha it made me constipated! When do you take your berberine? I was told to take it a half an hour before meals. But I ended up being late and being constipated. Maybe it’s not getting absorbed all the way because I have more sugar cravings in the usual I work out a lot but when I go to bed, I am off and get out and watermelon and papaya and grapes and almond chocolate on them. It just doesn’t stop 😭I just want to get eight hours of sleep without waking up wanting frui

    🧐🧐 Sounds to good to be true? What are some cautions like heart diseases. What are some negative side effects?

    • @DrJasonPickel
      @DrJasonPickel  Рік тому +1

      Hi, great question! The research on this is great - especially compared to metformin. I rarely see any side effects, but some people, supplementing with berberine has been reported to cause gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, and stomach pain. Due to its ability to reduce blood sugar, berberine may increase the risk for hypoglycemia in high doses - blood sugars may drop too low. Usually all of this is a dosage issue, but could create the above symptoms if you have an autoimmune condition and can't tolerate Th1 stimulation. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Don't make us google you to find out your degree. Your lab coat should say D.C. I do utilize chiropractors, but you just don't have the background to be making a video like this. BTW I do take Berberine. I'm not sure what supplements are working for me, but this probably as good as the fish oil, B12, Vitamin D (been tested before and was super low despite being in the sun way too much), magnesium, zinc. Some of these, plus eating a mostly vegan diet (I do eat chicken and fish) got my weight down to the 170's (I'm over 6') and my 5-mile average walking is now at 4mph. Too bad you're in Kansas as I'm in need of a chiropractor as the last one really didn't seem to help, and my fantastic Chiropractor has passed.
