My wedding was well under 1000 and didn’t feel cheap and tacky like this one did. Outdoor wedding like you suggested, a lot of luck getting a dress off Craigslist, family took the photos and I cooked the food and did my own hair and makeup and made my bouquet with flowers from Trader Joe’s. Man this made me cringe.

Yes, it can be done if done with some decent thought and planning put into it. For my wedding we bought a whole heap of flowers that I like'd and all of the bridesmaids and I made our own bouquets ourselves while we had a few drinks together and it was really special they were all very beautiful. My Aunty made the cake and helped decorate the outdoor wedding site. My sister-in-law did my hair and we did our own make-up and it was really nice to spend that time together at home rather than running from one place to another all morning on the day.

Got my wife's wedding bouquet for under 25 bucks and it turned out really pretty. I went to a local florist, picked the specific stems we wanted, and they arranged them for free. I had actually called the same florist a few days before and asked about a wedding bouquet with the flowers we wanted and they quoted 150 minimum. The key is to never ever mention that it's for a wedding. It's a 'gift' or a 'decoration' - amazing what the markup is when people hear the word 'wedding'.

My wedding was a total of like $300. My cake was beautiful and it was from Meijers. My dress was thrifted and was $30. I homemade all of the decorations. we got married in a park on bridge under a willow tree next to a duck pond. We had a picnic after party and bought foot long subs for 15 people. I got my prom dress at a thrift shop. It was small but I loved it and it was only $100. We knew of a very sweet elderly lady who did alterations for cheap for people who couldn't afford it, so we went to her and she turned the back of the dress into a corset for $20 and the cost of the materials (which was just two types of ribbons and she had matching thread).

I made my daughters wedding dress. My grandmother taught me how to sew & make patterns. My daughter wanted a dress that was several different designs put together. It turned out gorgeous. I made it for less that $300 & it looked like one costing over a few thousand. I even added the sm pearl beads in the floral pattern on the lace, accenting the wide lace on the dress & veil. (I dont like & wouldnt use the netting. It looks so cheap). It took a while doing all the details on it. But it was impressive.

So I planned a wedding for me and my ex fiance (this is part of the reason we didn't get married and aren't together anymore) and the mother (or as I call her devil in disguise) took over. I didn't want to get married in their family's church but respected it because of family and religion. Wanted us to change our colors because she didn't like the color she would have to wear as a mother of the groom. I had a limit of 100 people because the church SHE picked couldn't hold more and she complained not enough of her family could come and insisted I cut down my side (mind you it was about over half the people there were hers) then tried to change our music because she didn't like the songs. She tried to correct my wedding dress because it had an open back and it showed off my tattoos. Wanted me to pay for a caterer so family wouldn't have to cook as well as maybe a decorator for the church. All while she had my family paying for the whole thing. I wanted to use my mom's old bouquet of flowers my great grandmother had made by hand with a Japanese inscription of love on it and she ordered a lilly bouquet (I don't even like Lillie's) instead because it was ugly. Mind you through all of this her son who was supposed to be helping make OUR wedding special let her act this way and when I would stand up for myself saying it was my wedding and his not hers. He didn't want half of what she was doing either but figured why not have his mother have HER day since it was her oldest son's wedding day.....I'm so glad I did not marry into this family

Professional cakes are high priced for a reason. You’re paying for not only ingredients, which aren’t cheap unless you’re a huge company.. but you’re also paying for skill and all the time the person put into making it. My mum makes the most amazing cakes and got asked by my cousin to make wedding cupcakes to cater to different tastes and diets (there were a couple vegan friends at the wedding and she wanted to make sure they got cake too). She knew that vegan cakes could be a little tricky, and she spent months working on three different recipes for the wedding to make them as perfect as possible, and the end result was so popular that not a single cupcake got left behind. The people at the venue were boxing up the remaining cakes cos everyone wanted to take them home, and the owner actually asked my mum if she was a pro baker because she would really like to sell those cupcakes at the counter. My cousin cried so much when she saw my mum again after the wedding. It had been so much more then she had been expecting. Those cupcakes are still talked about five years later and are now a special family recipe. I can’t imagine how much my cousin would’ve had to spend to buy the same thing from a cakery or something, especially the quantity.
Only downside is that it took me nearly a year to want to go near a cupcake again after all that. Being one of only three taste testers for all those experimental batches will take a toll on you 🤣🤣🤣

But if you really want a good deal on a cake for your wedding, don’t tell them it’s for a wedding we were automatically charge you a minimum of about $300. It’s just how the industry works. If you get just a normal two-tier, For about 100 people, in white with some nice designs, and then don’t tell them it’s for a wedding you could pay about 250. If you tell them it’s for a wedding you’re paying automatic 400. Because we’re going to insist that we deliver it because we know that people are dumb they can’t deliver the wrong case for some reason. I literally watched a guy say no I can deliver my own cake and then drop it right outside my store

Or have a yard wedding if you or your friends have a nice house with a nice yard. I'd also say do your own decorations (didn't see any there), there are so many instructions available nowadays, like how to make cute fairylights out of a used jar, some flowers, lights, etc. And you could cook actual homemade food (for example potato salad is a super popular celebration-food in my country) and it would probably come out cheaper than tons of dry sandwiches. Friends could each bring one dish as part of their gift. Also the mom was soo fixated on the total being no more than 1000 just for the sake of it (so she could brag how she did it with this exact sum), leaving no room for small changes. I bet it could've been a nice wedding in under a 1000 but the mom or anyone didn't put in any effort (like I said, decorations, buffet and etc).

I once got a 12¢ office desk from Office Depot (it was part of their system where it rolled out of inventory as a loss - meaning the company already declared it as loss years prior and got their tax cut or whatever) either way, never will you find a 12¢ (yes, cent) desk at Walmart OR a thrift store or pawn shop.
In fact, I got a lot of things from Office Depot from $0.12-$4.92 (the 2’s where how they identified them in their system).

I used to work a lot of weddings as a musician, and let me tell you there are so many nice work arounds for cost. Flowers: Have friends with some land pick wildflowers and greenery, or my personal favorite was homemade cloth flowers that the aunts did. The bouquets were so cute and not intended to look too real (patterned fabric and such) and really fit the DIY feel of the wedding. They gave me a centerpiece and I still have a couple of those flower to this day.
Cake: Just have a baker friend make one instead of a gift! You can make a plain 3-tiered cake for very inexpensive, no need to fake a display cake!
Dresses: if you know your measurements Etsy has a ton of vintage dresses, and just get matching less fancy dresses from a normal store for bridesmaids.

@@omoidashu You are completely wrong. At least in my shop we use great ingredients already in all of our cakes. Wedding cakes are made more differently than any other cake and any other shop. And we don’t really take different approaches. If it’s a tier cake with some type of beautiful, fancy design it’s gonna take us a while anyway. With weddings we offer delivery, which means we have to take time out of our day to deliver. Which means were taking a decorator away usually on a Saturday to take your cake to some god-awful location, to put it on the most unstable of Stands, and then we make sure that your cake looks nice before we leave and sometimes leave and stay and cut it for you if you so choose. But if you really want to save the money, don’t tell them it’s a wedding cake. Look up how to safely transport a cake by yourself, that’s assuming if it’s three tears or less cause I really want to try to transport anything else, and then order it as a normal event cake. Because we’re still gonna have to take all that time out of our day to decorate a tiered cake with a nice design. We’re still gonna have to stack all the layers, make them sick, then ice the cake then tear the cake then with the cakes that then decorate it. The only difference is we’re not delivering it to you. I work in the industry and I can tell you right now, the process of a wedding cake is really not any different than any other cake. It’s just that we had to do a tasting with you and we have to pull at least two or more employees to deliver your cake which takes time away from other cakes. So basically when you book a wedding cake, you’re booking a delivery as well which means you’re taking the time of about two or three other cakes away from the business. And that’s why we up charge you now because we do it special. We do cakes just the same. that’s a complete fallacy

This is one time I would NOT mind everything being staged.
I want to imagine that a lot of what's going on here is due to friends and family sitting back and letting Mom have her time to shine on this show she wanted to be on. Best case scenario, this was just a spectacle for the camera, and the couple had another ceremony later.
This girl grew up with her mom being Like That, she's probably (hopefully) used to just rolling her eyes, playing along, and making her own plans later. The fiance's mom also does not look like someone who would quietly sit still and let this happen to their son on a normal day.
Everyone knew the cameras would be there, and with one of those in your face it's easier to get someone like the Pawnshop owner to play along as well.
I mean, I'm not too bothered about having a "nice" wedding, personally - I myself wouldn't mind doing something like that for a family member under the right circumstances.

There's some reasons for that though. Everything for a wedding is checked and triple checked, because if it is for someone's wedding, everyone turns into a Karen. "I see a fingerprint." " The colours are uneven." "It clashes with the table runners!" Seriously. People are usually prepared to pay extra for a wedding, but the expectations are through the roof.

My wedding was less than $750. We got married in a beautiful botanical garden, in the rose garden, complete with a raised natural waterfall fountain and beautiful archways. We went to the place my husband and I had our first date for our reception, Steak n' Shake. My best friend photographed it. My grandmother made my dress, and my mother did my hair and we got fake flowers from Hobby Lobby when they were 50% off. It was beautiful, and there weren't many dry eyes in the place. @SkibblesT 3 роки тому +5

Florists aren't stupid. You can't order a bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres, and then flowers for the center pieces and say it's not for a wedding. Also the price of the each stem of flowers doesn't go up. It's the fact that you go from 10 min for a nice arrangement up to two days of work for a full wedding which ends up costing you. The price of the flowers wanted, whether they are in season or not will also affect cost and of course labour. Plus delivery, setting up the center pieces day of wedding etc.
Most things for weddings are like this. You can't compare a simple birthday cake you pay $20 for to a wedding cake made to feed 150 people.
You can't compare a family session for photography to a full 12 hour day, plus the hours editing, plus making photo albums, delivery again for the products etc.
So no, a lot of things cost more because there's more to it than just oh it's for a wedding suddenly this rose costs $100 a stem!!!!

But those rules were from back when women typically got married young and went from her parents home to being married, now that people wait later to get married and most people have their own incomes and live on their own before getting married it’s more typical to see the couple themselves paying for the majority of the wedding cost.

My mum worked at the venue, so that was free as well as the tablecloths. Friends offered to do the photography, the music, the flowers, the hosting, as well as make the snacks for free. Smaller decorations were bought at the Dollar Tree. My mum made the wedding cake too. Everything was surprisingly beautiful, but it was because so many loved ones came together to make it happen. (We sent them money gifts afterwards as a thank you) We might've been even cheaper than these people if I'd gone with a thrift store dress, haha. Found a flower wholesale place and my bridesmaids and I made all the bouquets, boutonnieres, etc, I love making flower arrangements), bought our dresses new at a dress warehouse, a friend had opened her restaurant (beautiful country inn) the year before and asked us if we could be her and her hubby's experiment in throwing weddings (we still are featured in their wedding brochure), we'd get the venue and a horse drawn carriage (not kidding, a carriage) for free and just have to pay half price for the food per guest. I have a ton of friends who are musicians who volunteered to play sets for food (we payed them too, because it didn't feel right not to give them anything). Another friend and the venue (because they needed them to advertise) took pictures for a really good rate. Solution 2: All you gotta say is that this one couple decided to elope right before the reunion and showed up in their dress. You can't do a formal first dance, toasts, etc, but it's pretty easy to get away with. The venue, dj, etc. all have contracts, and as long as you uphold your end of based on the legal language of the contract, they cannot back out without repercussions. Besides, if they're already there and they've already paid, they're not going to storm out with $3k worth of food. It costs more for them to walk away at that point.

It's from when unmarried daughters were considered a liability, so the fathers paid for the wedding almost like a "'thank you' to the groom for taking care of my daughter for the rest of her/your life" thing. Though that's more of a Europeans/early America explanation, many different cultures have/had similar traditions though they vary in detail.
