Geology behind the Gemstone Peridot and WHY is created a Green Sand Beach.

  • Geology lesson of the day! Why are there 96,000,000 green gemstones on this beach? - The Green Sand Beach of the Big Island of Hawaii.
The green Gemstone is Olivine aka Peridot. Peridot is formed deep in the mantle of the earth and is brought to the surface through volcanic action. It is either deposited in cooled magma below the surface and eroded out, or in this case blown out onto the surface in an explosive Volcanic event that created a lot of volcanic ash or finer ejected material. And then washed out of the ash/cinder onto the beach.
Two expert sources had conflicting information on the source of the ash/cinder, one said a very large eruption from the main Moa Loa volcano, and the other, which is more likely, says it was a side vent of Mona Loa known as a cinder cone that had many small eruptions. Either way the peridot was deposited in volcanic ash/cinder in big bluffs that the ocean then eroded and concentrated the olivine onto this beach.
Green sand beach is officially known as Papakōlea.
Note If you visit this beach you must leave all the sand for other to enjoy. Take pictures, take video, take memories, but do not take sand!
If you want some peridot for yourself, I sell peridot bags and crystals on my website from my local claims.

@@omegaseamaster1550 those beaches seem to be on the Frasier river. It amazes me that there's always garnets in his gold pans and the shear amount of garnets when he uses his gem sieve looking for gem quality specimens.

@@coloradowaterdog3706correct , many of Dan's vloggs show the Garnets along the Fraser River , but none as many as Dan's claim on The Big Silver Creek claim on Harrison Lake show the beaches of Red Garnets.I was speaking in jest as a reference to Big Silver Creek on Harrison Lake...
BC has many wonderful natural beauties and Dan showcases but, just a few.

@@omegaseamaster1550 thank you, for the clarification on which river has the "garnet beaches." Garnet is my birthstone, but I never thought much of it until I started watching Dan's videos. Now, I'd love to spend an entire day with him finding them(A day out prospecting gold with him would be pretty awesome too!).

Aloha Dan. Been here choke times. Never thought you and I would share the same locale , ever. Fine explanation of the place. I've sat drinking 1st am coffee on that ridge of olivine/ash/cinder watching sunrises decades ago. My 1st prospecting olivier came from using a small paint brush to "dust" up some into a small baggie to take back to my Hale. "Treasure" is where you find it. Now, I must seek out the PART 1 that I seemingly passed by. I saw it showing the
"Green Sand" but never linked it to this beach I've enjoyed so much before.

Hey Dan! Based on your first video about Green Sand Beach, we just went there during our kids winter break (since Mauna Loa and Kilauea both decided to stop erupting at the same time). We hiked in and took a ride back and it was fun, interesting, and a beautiful (if warm) hike. Unfortunately since then, I've learned that those truck rides are probably illegal and really contributing to erosion problems at the park. 😞 So, you might want to look into that - you can google it... But I love your videos!

@Dan Hurd , My wife and I visited that beach in the early 1990's. I can't believe the erosion that has occurred over time on that beach over 30 years. The beach was much higher up and shallower than it is now. We kept a pound of the greener mix of sand and took it home with us. Still have it.
We parked a lot closer than 3 miles at the time. I can't believe the ruts you drove through. Do they still have that line of wind power generators further inland?
Man the Big Island was so fun to visit. Much better than the commercialized drama of Oahu. Fond memories. And Volcanoes national park oh my! ;)
