Geology behind the Gemstone Peridot and WHY is created a Green Sand Beach.

- Geology lesson of the day! Why are there 96,000,000 green gemstones on this beach? - The Green Sand Beach of the Big Island of Hawaii.
The green Gemstone is Olivine aka Peridot. Peridot is formed deep in the mantle of the earth and is brought to the surface through volcanic action. It is either deposited in cooled magma below the surface and eroded out, or in this case blown out onto the surface in an explosive Volcanic event that created a lot of volcanic ash or finer ejected material. And then washed out of the ash/cinder onto the beach.
Two expert sources had conflicting information on the source of the ash/cinder, one said a very large eruption from the main Moa Loa volcano, and the other, which is more likely, says it was a side vent of Mona Loa known as a cinder cone that had many small eruptions. Either way the peridot was deposited in volcanic ash/cinder in big bluffs that the ocean then eroded and concentrated the olivine onto this beach.
Green sand beach is officially known as Papakōlea.
Note If you visit this beach you must leave all the sand for other to enjoy. Take pictures, take video, take memories, but do not take sand!
If you want some peridot for yourself, I sell peridot bags and crystals on my website from my local claims.

Oh man that was a great premier the other day with the green sands! So cool! Thanks for sharing Dan!
Glad you liked it
Loved the green trails and beaches ....now to find some garnet beaches too ;)
@@omegaseamaster1550 those beaches seem to be on the Frasier river. It amazes me that there's always garnets in his gold pans and the shear amount of garnets when he uses his gem sieve looking for gem quality specimens.
@@coloradowaterdog3706correct , many of Dan's vloggs show the Garnets along the Fraser River , but none as many as Dan's claim on The Big Silver Creek claim on Harrison Lake show the beaches of Red Garnets.I was speaking in jest as a reference to Big Silver Creek on Harrison Lake...
BC has many wonderful natural beauties and Dan showcases but, just a few.
Happy Holidays All.
@@omegaseamaster1550 thank you, for the clarification on which river has the "garnet beaches." Garnet is my birthstone, but I never thought much of it until I started watching Dan's videos. Now, I'd love to spend an entire day with him finding them(A day out prospecting gold with him would be pretty awesome too!).
I got to visit this island for 2 weeks. It Was fantastic. We really enjoyed the day we spent on this beach. Happy memories.
I’d take a whole geology course if you were my teacher! This was great, thank you!
Thanks Dan for educating us viewers on all things Peridot. I had no idea and not much interest in the grapefruit sized rock stuck back on a shelf for some years, but now I know its hundreds of peridots, wow !
Finally a geology lesson I found it easy to concentrate on:)
A beach ⛱ of my birth stone!! I love it!! Peridot and, diamonds come about in the earth's mantle, all other stones are formed in the earth's crust. A green sand beach, how beautiful and, unique!
I love it when the geology lesson has a good story to it.
Basically, the beach looks like a big Gold Pan! The nature panning in action?!!😏✨💚
Thanks for the info, I know a little bit about this subject, and other than a few minor details, you got it spot on. Water and steam does play a bit of a part in the events.
Awesome, thank you! I wish I had said something about that too, but can't get it all. and hindsight is..... you know.
Yes great info, thanks

great video in a time of BC winter weather Mr Hurd...keep up the good work ,Merry Xmas !
Super interesting! Thank you for sharing, Dan!
you are welcome
Aloha Dan. Been here choke times. Never thought you and I would share the same locale , ever. Fine explanation of the place. I've sat drinking 1st am coffee on that ridge of olivine/ash/cinder watching sunrises decades ago. My 1st prospecting olivier came from using a small paint brush to "dust" up some into a small baggie to take back to my Hale. "Treasure" is where you find it. Now, I must seek out the PART 1 that I seemingly passed by. I saw it showing the
"Green Sand" but never linked it to this beach I've enjoyed so much before.
Laters.
Great video, Dan! Love the science!
Dan, fantastic vid, made it really clear and and easy to follow. Well done.

Merry Christmas Dan. Thank you for all you do
And to you as well
Did rather well on that overall concept. Nice to see the third color of beach in my life, two almost the same - coral white and pure white really making four colors and textures.
Really engaging and educational video there Dan, thanks. :D

Merry Christmas
We visited the Big Island from Miami a few years ago and went to Green Sand Beach twice. We hiked the first time but had a jeep the second time and needless to say both times were enchanting.
Excellent explanation Dan 👌
thanks
Merry Christmas Dan & family! 🎅
Very good! Dan you are the man.
THAT place is unreal looking!
Very good overview of the processes involved .
For a place where the mineralization is somewhat boring , it does have a few beautiful exceptions .
What a blast coming by. Merry Christmas 🎄☃️. Gold Squad Out!!!
merry Christmas to you as well.
Another great video Dan. Hopefully you get your 1 millionth subscribers for a new years present 🎁
I learned something new today ! Merry Christmas to you and your Family !
And to you as well
Thanks Dan - very interesting and a beautiful beach! Greetings from the UK. :o)
Hello Dan, Merry Xmas. To you and your family. I just saw you cutting your rocks. I'm sure your students are lucky to have you as a teacher. You are such fun.
green is my obsession and I would love to visit the beach
so cool ! more lessons like these please !
I hope tovdo more.
Hey Dan! Based on your first video about Green Sand Beach, we just went there during our kids winter break (since Mauna Loa and Kilauea both decided to stop erupting at the same time). We hiked in and took a ride back and it was fun, interesting, and a beautiful (if warm) hike. Unfortunately since then, I've learned that those truck rides are probably illegal and really contributing to erosion problems at the park. 😞 So, you might want to look into that - you can google it... But I love your videos!
Very interesting. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Hawaii.
I did!
Been watching you for quite a while now.
Very informative!
Glad you liked it
Great video bud
Dang your gonna hit one million subs shorty.
enjoy the sun, great vid.
Closing in on 1mill Dan hope you hit it before new year’s
@Dan Hurd , My wife and I visited that beach in the early 1990's. I can't believe the erosion that has occurred over time on that beach over 30 years. The beach was much higher up and shallower than it is now. We kept a pound of the greener mix of sand and took it home with us. Still have it.
We parked a lot closer than 3 miles at the time. I can't believe the ruts you drove through. Do they still have that line of wind power generators further inland?
Man the Big Island was so fun to visit. Much better than the commercialized drama of Oahu. Fond memories. And Volcanoes national park oh my! ;)
the beach will come and go each year depending on weather
THANK YOU DAN. PERIDOT IS MY BIRTHSTONE. GREAT INFORMATION.
You are so welcome
Merry Christmas Dan
That's super interesting, thank you
you are welcome
Great video 👍
thanks
Well that was a nice teaching lesson good to see that you're back at teaching I enjoyed it I never knew a lot of what you told me it's a beautiful beach and beautiful little gemstones yellow like gold but thank you I appreciate it I was also wondering when you walk on it does it make the bottom of your feet smooth anyway happy New Year see you next year haha haha
Well …. I’ll tell ya what Dan… I’m not going to be writing a thesis anytime soon…. But I just learned a volcano load of information…. If I end up on a quiz show and they ask about Green Sand Beaches…. Im going to win because of you and this video.
Awesome Dan .. Nice to see some more geology /lithology based information in the video !! Youve been studying ;) Love it ... Can't wait to hang out and talk rocks soon !!! Congrats soon on 1m subs and an epic 2023 season ... ps just got call RC permit is 99% done/approved :)
Awesome!
I've been at that beach, it's pretty cool.
Your best video thanks for knowledge you didn't waste your education bravo and merry Christmas big dude 😎
Happy holidays!
I was up there on that high up part of the beach when I was there In 2018 very cool spot
How exciting! Thanks Dan, you expressed the drama of the event with the wonder of geological mechanics perfectly.
As far as not going into tedious detail to be perfectly accurate... I say, well, if it ain't true, it oughta be!
thank you
How small or big is the peridot? Great lesson today.
Love your beard Dan!!! My 3rd great grandfather, Ransom Gates, had a beard somewhat like that. Except his was thinner at the sides and a different color (gray & black). I have a great drawing of him with that beard.
You say lava differently then I do. I love hearing different accents from around the world
Thank you very much
you are welcome
Beautiful video share ☺️

1K AWAY FROM 1 MIL CONGRATULATIONS
Cool! I had no idea peridot could be found in columnar basalt!
That is how we find most of it here in BC
Nice video
Thanks
