As electronic musicians we have the power to precisely execute our compositions with 100% accuracy, but why would we really want that? What are some methods to re-inject that human imperfection back into the music?

I want to take this opportunity to thank you Oscar for helping people out with tips and what not about music production. You deserve a big thanks from the universe!! Keep doing what you do!! Amazing stuff 👏 I've been following your videos for over a year now, even though I never approached you personally, you have inspired me quite many times. Thank you again 💓
I appreciate you saying that! 🙏🏻🤗
same here!
I love how surprised your friend is with every time you play around with the sounds, add effects and all that. Wholesome video.
Yeah you can become a bit jaded after a while, forgetting how exciting this stuff can be 😁
Thank you for sharing the anxiety thing - it’s extremely comforting to someone like me who can never keep the anxiety down showing anything to anyone!
Yo Oscar, the friend part is so real. Whenever I've made any tracks with people sitting next to me. The track is totally different from what I usually make alone
10 further ideas for getting more organic realness in productions that comes to my mind are:
- Use Foley in the brackground (very subtle)
- Use Tape (J37 is heaven, cause it rhymes)
- Make use of chance methods,
- Use Groove/Swing
- Put very subtle off grid panning to Instruments and/or Percussion
- Add in some subtle human sounds (like breathing, subtle VOX shots)
- Use real recorded sample loops form percussionists like shaker, rides or tambourine Loops. If you use Splice look out for samples that are claimed "live sounds"
- Get a sample pack from a real drummer like Jake Reed (Dope AF!)
- Record a shaker or something through out the whole track...even if you are not a percussionist you are able to record a shaker on every Kick or Snare/Clap...
- Put a very subtle random LFO on start or endpoint of some drum elements ( like Clap, or Hi Hat)..brain empty.
@Oscar: Thanks for your insights and inspiration
"some say he is still holding his rain stick to this day..." love it
Great video, totally agree on recording your own physical instruments whenever you can. Not only do they bring the "humanness" because you're the one who's gonna be playing them (or a person that you record with), but also it will be recorded in the space that you are physically in, and the choice of instruments will be unique and true to you (probably expanding over time). Another thing I would really encourage anyone doing production to try - reamping sounds in interesting places, recording that with some sort of mic (field recorders are great) and re-introducing that to your track. For example you could take a piano part from your track, export it as a solo audio to your phone, take a bluetooth speaker and bring it to the biggest tunnel/cave/space you know of (you have to be able to be loud there), blast it back through the speaker and record it on a mic - there is real magic in using physical spaces for reverbs!
A trick electric guitar players use is to play the same song on an acoustic guitar but only use the absolute high end of the sound so it picks up all the plucks and hand shifts like a form of percussion that you can layer on top of an electric guitar.
Can't wait for the level 2 course!
This one was probably one of your best videos. Just made me smile!:)
Thanks, I put a lot of heart into it 😁 glad that came across!
@@OscarUnderdog it has come through for sure!!
Underdog is the top dog of youtube production, always providing me with the inspiration and knowledge I need
I presume you've seen the live video of Otomo, being performed with the Pipe Organ at the Albert Hall... goosebumps every time!! ❤
Oscar, i can see the fun when you guys were looking at each other. That's the beauty of creativity. Sweet!
Loved how you two were jamming out together and surprised with some awesome results. Very inspiring and uplifting video! Combining organic elements and introducing all kinds of imperfections are some my favourite things to do and this sounded amazing!
you guys vibing 😎❤️
another nice video. thank you 🙏🏼❤️
Excellent, top-tier video. And seeing two friends jam out together was a lot of fun. :D
Thanks again! So educational, fun and inspiring at the same time.
'How to sound alive?' is a very, very deep question *BESEF*
It’s a turing test actually 😂
I'll be waiting to see the level 2 course!
Timely as usual. Thanks Oscar.
ill be buying the foundations. thanks for the knowledge!
Your information is priceless. Thank you for the hard work 😁
3:18 so so so epic
Very cool track, love the percussive elements !
Another great video. Thank you Sir.
Hey, I recently discovered this channel, it's really helping me a lot.
The opening sounds a lot like a Belgian techno classic track.
Groetjes van een landgenoot!
Your best track yet! Nice one Oscar :)
Dear oscar ive been watching for a year and lowkey learning to produce some simple thing on my ipad sampler app thing,
And do i have to thank you, i’ve watched so much of your content to understand whats going on at all.
Sound is such a beautiful emotional hobby.
If you ever need any art, im in berlin waiting for opportunities to make beautiful things.
I like you a lot.
Keep doing you, it’s helping so many of us
Thanks Andre, that's a super nice thing to read 🥰
So great my friend! Certainly love this track and it was great to see the little snips of you and your harp friend getting into that groove together. Really love that connection, and by extension I also now feel very connected with the track. Got you all on my playlist Extended Blundering and Inspiration on spotify, amazon music, and tidal: you certainly do keep being inspiration!
Owwwww thanks for this!!! 💙🙏🏻 helps a lot for a small project like ours!
@@OscarUnderdog thank you for the reliable educational content
Oscar as a reason ambassador maybe this can get a part 2 with the new Object Synth from reason Studios! Always love your content thanx!
Sounds Great!
Can't wait for Level 2
Superb collab!
More content gold. How have I only discovered this channel recently? Oh well I have lots of content to delve into now. Happy days
Thanks for the humor, thanks for the advice.
You are beautiful people, thank you Oscar ! 😊
Oh i love this! ❤
Hey I just want to say that alle these videos are top notch!
You have a big talent for teaching complicated things in an understandable and just enjoyable way.
keep it up, and groetjes van een noorderbuur
Cheers rob!

Wasn't expecting this video to be so wholesome 😍😍😍
Oscar pls put Looking for (Acoustic Version) on Spotify🙏 crazy track and deserves it
🥰 thanks for that, makes me wanna do it!
Amazing track 🔥
Love that song ❤
Yes I want that class
Hi Oscar. My current technique of introducing realism in production is: recording the Korg Wavedrum percussion synthesizer/sampler for all kinds of organic percussions... It has fantastic sounds... And for lead synths any electronic wind instrument like the AKAI EWI is great. If you know how to play winds you'll give it a great expressiveness.
Just a request for Temple Dance to move over to Spotify too. I think really deserving of a release there
Shout out.. give this man a Nobel prize ❤️❤️💥💥💥🔥🔥
I like to sing oohs, aahs and other syllables to make pads. The human voice slightly wavers in pitch when singing which creates small movements in pads!
you should check out the Bonobo- Otomo version with Anna Lapwood on the organ if you don’t know it already, it’s incredible
I hadn't holy crap!!! 🤯 thanks for pointing me to that!!!
@@OscarUnderdog least I could do for all your great videos!
I love that version a lot!
Your videos helped me a ton already, thanks for that aswell!:)
I used to sequence acoustic drums one shot samples, to mantain an organic feel i would many times snap almost every single one shot sample slightly out of the grid lines, i also changed the volume each time a sample would play.
Yees, level 2 please!
Such fun ,and bouncing ideas and skills off each other was complementary. I'm not sure where to start, but I need to find someone to work/collab with, even though I am a newbie to EDM (Live).
One of my favourite examples of using real instruments or sampling real sounds is Dax J - Tenshun. He samples an out of tune piano and what I think is a door creeking. At the end of the track when the music stops, there is a small snippet of the recording where he is talking to someone in the room about how he likes this sound so you get a sense of the origins and time the sampling was done. Definitely worth checking out
Very nice! Love that groove. I would've liked even more if you went a bit into more detail on how and where you've set all these "sprinkly" percussion voices. That would've been even more helpful.
Thanks a lot for what you do!
dude you gotta be creative yourself about these things
Hey Oscar, I really enjoyed this video and the new song!
How do you feel about 'comping'?
It's something I like to experiment with too.
I select a few bars, arm record, press record to loop that section, and
play an instrument or sounds over it, creating new melodies or rhythms with every pass.
After 4 or more passes I listen to what sounds interesting and sometimes I even
cut and paste parts together like a collage.
Love the new song and look forward to maybe? an album of sorts?
Or maybe a remix competition? 😉
Yeah i never fully got into the comping workflow but i totally see its merit! I still just record loops endlessly in ableton and cut and paste from there. Both methods get similar results im sure!
Oscar, I bought your course some time ago, I am a very amateur producer who loves to experiment with electronic music. I thank you very much for your passion, commitment, and how didactic you are in transmitting your knowledge. I hope there are more people like you in the world. It would be nice if you could make a video about the best free Plug Ins (not necessarily) or indispensable for you to enrich your sound.
😗
I would love more videos about the organic and live sound that producers like Bonobo or Four Tet have.
Cheers Pablo! Will definitely keep making videos and I have some ideas for these topics for sure!
Absolute legend doing god's work with these video. Always learning so much every god damn time 🙏🙂
oh yeah I love it!! Hi Gui :p
Hey Oscar, great tip! I've been looking to recreate this Bonobo bass sound forever and have failed miserably!! Can you please tell me how you did it?
That beat sounds very close to the percussion of Massive Attack, Unfinished Sympathy. Just sped up. That was very organic sounding too.
I love the track! It's really great! Are the strings also recorded? Lots of interesting sounds there... i would love a full track breakdown.
The strings are spitfire bbc plugin, great sound! Feel a bit mixed about recommending them since I learned the company has some values I dont agree with, but can’t deny that the sounds are great!
@@OscarUnderdog Oh. I'm gonna have to make my research about that. But their plugin are ridicoulosly good sounding and many are free. Anyway if you make a full breakdown of this track i'm your patreon NQA 😉
I sometimes add a little LFO filtered second hihat to the mix, to produce more "randomness". - But of course nothing beats real recorded percussions. 😉
I do this all the time,I made a tube rice shake, cups, bubble wrap.all kinds.it's great fun
I would like the advanced course
i really like to mess with pitch a little bit when i'm designing a synth sound. Portamento can be fun. I also sometimes like to put an envelope on the fine pitch so that the sound sort of "dies" over time during sustained notes. Theres all kinds of stuff you can do with lfos and automation on fine pitch too. I think that sorta stuff helps to mimic the human voice a little bit and can give a sound a little more feeling
One thing I use is a sample of someone saying and "S" then use that S noise's transients and i layer it over some of the hihats. It gives it some variation and makes it sound and kinda sounds a tiny bit like beatboxing, but not in a tacky way
Given that the computer can work to such close tolerances in Ableton, it's really surprising how the finesse of human articulation comes through.
What also surprises me is that Gui is playing arpeggi ( e.g.07'00")which are typical of what an arp plug in might generate on its simplest setting.
Who knew? Arpeggiare = to play the harp 😮. Probably everyone but me😢
I watch all sorts of tutorials and some educational videos non are structured as your videos are. I never had any experience in my life in terms of making music or dealing with music and this is the only actual course I'd actually buy. Just wondering if there has ever been or will there be a discount on the price on special days?
I really appreciate you saying this :) No discounts for now, never really experimented with that yet!
@@OscarUnderdog Well i’ll be here if you ever do that experiment. Thank you for your contributions to the community man. I was about to give up. 🍻
great tips! could you make a tutorial on how to make industrial techno songs like cekta - son of paralel Or jonas & slvl - everbody must work . There are no videos about how to make those really hard fast hitting metal souding kicks and and percs and how to make those dark siren like synts / stabs. That would be awesome to learn about! Thank you
Please mention when your music is also available on Apple Music. As it is our primary music source. We found The Maze there. Nice work!
play by hand ...aaand quantize :D
hahahahaha I am aware of the mild contradiction but I stand by what I said 🤣
@@OscarUnderdog :D
well you dont have to quantize all notes and of course there's other aspects too like natural velocities that comes from live play.
for me adding human feel to my music has got to be using mostly samples from my field recorder
Is your fundamentals course for Ableton users or could it be transferable for logic
I'm not really the best player, so If I'm wanting a more human feeling solo MIDI part I'll slow 🐌 the bpm by about 20 bpm and record with no quantize, then return my DAW to the original bpm. If I'm recording something like guitar, I'll do the same, but I'll downtune my guitar then pitch correct the audio later. For example: if the song is 132 bpm I'll set the bpm to 110 and tune the guitar down two semitones.
What program do you use?
So you better record all the noise you make on the toilet in the morning. You never know if that coud be the next Hit. 😜
Cool Sound btw...👍
Maybe I should come to Brussels and you can get me out of the 4 bar loop I've been in for 30 years. LOL
How did you record the harp?
Straight into a sennheiser 416 into my RME soundcard!
@@OscarUnderdog nice! you didn't experience any clashing of the keyboard or feedback when you guys were jamming at the same time?
@@neopunkmusic I think we didn't have monitoring looping back, as the instrument was loud enough in the room! But beyond that, the sennheiser is quite directional so I wouldn't be too worried.
@@OscarUnderdog appreciate the responses, thank you :)
Did you upgrade to using a Mac ?
Yeah about a year ago! Very happy with the decision, as there's a lot less friction, also on the video-editing side, so it's a good fit for me. Having a laptop powerful enough to do serious audio and video work, and let me work remotely, that's something I couldn't do when I had a windows desktop PC as my main workstation.
@@OscarUnderdog I also startede out on pc but then I got a Mac MIni M1 and everything runs smoth :-)I hope you will dig into Live/Reason again :-)
Coincidence? I am right now waiting for two African caxixi shakers, one small one medium. I'll try recording them both simultaneously in stereo with two mics...
Bro thanks so much for your videos! When u visit some day Berlin, lets go partying in a club
