- Here is an easy way to make frijoles charros. This method eliminates hovering over your stove and stirring the beans. I find cooking in a crock pot on low is convenient and frees time to work on other things.
INGREDIENTS
1 lb pinto beans (washes and rinsed)
1/2 onion
4 cloves of garlic
1 to 2 tomatoes
1 jalapeno (or serrano pepper)
1 cup chopped cilantro
6 slices of bacon chopped
4 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
2 tsp salt (or salt to your taste)
black pepper to taste

So true
Charro beans are cooking at this very moment. I will post an update.
UPDATE: the family loved ❤️ the charro beans!! Thank you!!
Thanks for this video. I really need to unpack my CrockPot!! When I was a boy we didn't have a CrockPot. My mom would put beans on the stove first thing in the morning before we went off to school and she went off to work. It was my older sister's job to add water the beans when she got home from school. It was my job to add the water that she never remembered to do!!!
Daniel lol, good thing you were aware of those precious beans cooking
Daniel I know it’s late but this made me laugh😂 My mom had the convenience to stay home and pretty much everyday there were beans on the stove. I think a few times my mom accidentally burned them when she went to get us from school and they ran out of water and that is the worst smell ever😂 I love my mama tho☺️
Awesome
Didn’t have chicken broth so i sub 4 tbsp of chicken bouillon and it worked sooo well!! I always come back to this recipe, thank you so much for sharing it with us ❤️ its so enjoyable to watch
I have struggled for so many years to cook beans. They never came out right. Just made these last night. Not only are they cooked right! They taste so amazing! Can't wait for everyone to try them. Thank you so much!!
Angelica Saavedra did you use the bacon?
Thank you. El Paso in Louisiana serves charro beans and no one there knew the origin of the word. The beans there run from OK to great, depending on how long they have been on the stove, the longer, the creamier and better they get. I will try these today.
I know this is an old post, but "struggled" is the key word. From pressure cooker to oven, soak and not soak, I gave up. So, tonight, I bought a cheap 3 quart, bag of beans, and the food she mentions and I'm going for it. I saw your comment during this video and I thought, well, this is my last try and this Angelica said it worked. Well, we'll see in the morning.
@@c_farther5208 what troubles did you have? Beans arent difficult, ts when you try to do stuff to it that they act up. They can be baked, boiled, crockpot, or pressure cooked each to suit a specific dish. But if you name the problem we can usually tell you the remedy. Also whats your altitude? High up in the rockies so i cant add salt til the end for example. It leaves the center uncooked and the outside falls apart. My mom is around sea level and can cook a perfectly firm outside and creamy inside bean and salt doesnt ruin her final product.
C_ Farther , Well so how did it turn out? Inquiring minds want to know if you have given up or now have a go to recipe?
I made these last night and these were the BEST charro beans I ever had! Hubby gave them 2 thumbs up and he doesn't even like beans. Thanks for sharing your recipe!!
Your husband and children are so lucky to have you cooking/loving them. Great genes and values from your mom and dad.
This was so good. I decided to do this on a whim so used what I had, Camellia beans, some chopped up pork jowl that I had straight out of the freezer, a can of tomatoes, water, an onion, and a big spoon of Better than Bullion. Cooked overnight. OMG right out of the pot. Refried some with bacon fat. Just great, thank you.
This recipe is way more simple than cooking them on the stove top. Muchisimas gracias!
Yes! I agree. 👍
I know this recipe was posted in 2017, but I just came across it and wanted to make it in the slow cooker. The results were awesome and we were impressed! You know we’ll be making this from now on. Thank you Angelica 😊
This recipe is AMAZING. I made them last night. Thanks Angelica 💕
Thank you for sharing your recipes!! There's times when I don't know what to cook on a short notice but cooking these beans overnight is perfect!! 😊😊

Yay! Glad you liked it. 😊
This was my first time cooking beans that weren't terrible! They rocked and so yummy! I did mine in the Insta Pot on the Bean setting for 40 minutes. Let it saute at the end to create the bean soup consistency. OMG!!!!! Thank you!
i did not believe beans would cook so perfectly without presoaking but they sure did and were great. I let mine go an extra hour to thicken the soup. thx so much Angelica!

Oh, and I have to note that I love you actually use all of your ingredients. There are so many other channels that I watch to where they dump in and lots of it is left and I’m like get a rubber spatula and add that to your stuff!

I'm so happy to have found you here on U-Tube. My mom and grand-mom were southern cooks, so I followed that way of cooking. After watching you, I'm sure I can prepare some delicious authentic dishes. Muchísimas gracias !
FANTASTIC!
Best beans ever. Thank you for this great recipe! ❤
I'm a gringa just starting to learn the secrets of Mexican cooking, yes I have books by Rick Bayless and others but I find thatI'm learning the basic foundation from your no nonsence approach to every day foods. ( I'm also following Views on the road UA-cam channel at times) so you are my main teacher. Much appreciated.
Great music to go along with the great video! Thank ya!
I really lime you recipes. Thank you.
Omg!! I'm so happy i found your channel.
Made this today and wow great flavor. Thank you!!
I really like that you can crock pot at night while you sleep and meal ready in the morning , especially if you have extra company after Thanksgiving or Christmas ! I love the simplicity of your recipe ! Thanks Mama ...
Yes! I find it really convenient especially for beans. 😊
I also make my beans in the crock pot, but I use 6 cups. I find soaking them overnight, they soak up the water and expand. So once they go in the crock, I just cover them an inch or two with water, add minced garlic,, or fresh, can't overdo it, and a frozen jalapeno, which I freeze in bulk for my beans. I also do not add salt until the beans are about cooked. Oh, and if I have some, I add manteca lard, but just a regular spoon full, to give it that extra flavor. That's it. I start them in the morning and they are ready for dinner. Loved this video because it reminded me how my mom used bacon, but hubby doesn't prefer bacon with beans. Also, want to try the cilantro because when I've added the onions and tomatoes, they were delish.
OMG I never knew now I'll never be a slave to the stove. Thanks!💚
I love your recipes!! Thank you 😃
You are so welcome and Thank You! 😊
Making this again, one of my fav go too. Thanks!
Trying this tonight!!! Thank you for the video
These are amaaazing beans!! I used 2 tomatoes instead of 1, dried cilantro instead of fresh (didn't have fresh in hand) and only 5 slices of bacon but rest the same. I love the smokeyness the bacon adds. Next time I have to try fresh cilantro though. Another absolute hit.
thank you for the recipe tried it and was so easy and very good, i'll keep watching

Thank you for explaining how to cook without rambling. You have very lovely speaking voice and it’s easy to watch your videos from beginning to end. I really wanted to learn how to make beans but went through 5 vids because either it was too complicated or they were awful. Thank you ma’am hope to learn from you in the future.
Made them , they were a hit, I was skeptical but you have never me wrong...delicious
Thank you for showing your Charro Beans recipe by crock pot. I love charro beans and had never learned quite how to make them. My trial and error ways never really measured up to my mom’s charro beans. Now I know. 👍
Made these today. They turned out really good.
I am making it and it is having my place smelling so good can’t wait to eat it.
Love it! I will never make charro beans/ refried beans ( video) any other way. You are my new best friend! And the music you played when you started loading the Crock-Pot got me in a good mood for cooking. I must say thank you for all your recipes that I enjoy. 👍
Just have to say, I absolutely enjoy your cooking videos. I also just ordered your book on Amazon. Thank you for what you do.
TY for the informative video. Right to the point without extra talk
Love any kind of beans, charro beans are so delicious & spicy ! Definitely delicious side or meal !
Thank you so very much for this delicious recipe, Angelica! I made this a couple of weeks ago, and my family loved it! I started it after my husband went to bed, and he woke me up around 3 am asking what was cooking. I had to move it to my laundry room to finish cooking for the night because it made him so hungry....LOL. I made it exactly like your recipe, and I will never buy canned beans again. On the same day, I made your Chorizo recipe, and it was awesome too.
Congrats on going to the UA-cam workshop. I hope you have a great time. Thank you again for your generosity and friendly manner. You are a special person! With love from Tucson :O)

We don't have pinto beans where I live right now, only Red silk beans. Doesn't matter, I'm gong to make this recipe in a cpl of days, when I feel like I can stand up without falling! I used to eat charro beans when my ex's grandma would make them (she used a clay pot from Mexico!). I have missed them so much, as well as her. Such a lively, lovely lady! Thanks SO much for the recipe! I'll be toasting her and you with my first bowl!
