Pentatonix a "brief" background. They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list! Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. They married 22/04/24! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage. 4. It is "Pentatonix" there is no "The".
A capella music in the US has gone through various changes in the last century, from barbershop quartets to large collegiate groups singing in 4-8 parts. In the late 20th century, a capella groups that wanted to sing arrangements of rock and pop hits added singers to do instrumental-sounding vocal bass and percussion (beat boxing). Pentatonix does occasionally use instruments, particularly on their Christmas albums, and have in the last few years experimented with electronic sounds and vocal editing, but this song has no instruments; all the sounds you hear are being done by the five group members.
The bass singer is the incredible Avi Kaplan, He left the group for personal reasons in 2017, and now has a wonderful solo career going. Would love to see your reaction to his music. Most will start with his Change on the Rise where everything you hear is Avi from the deep deep bass noted to the high background harmonies.
I'm always happy when a new reactor finds Pentatonix! They have done so many styles of music...and all done well! You have a lot to choose from. They have won 3 Grammys. Their first is a medley of Daft Punk songs which will blow your mind with its effects! The second is for their arrangement of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, a Christmas song with no words. The third was a collaboration with Dolly Parton on Jolene. The have been nominated many more times and they have original music, as well. Have fun discovering this multi-talented group!
If you want more subscribers, start doing more Pentatonix. Their people love to see reactions of someone new to them. FYI They are just as good in their live concerts. I saw them last year on their summer tour and it was awesome....BUT then they came to Knoxville TN with their Christmas tour and performed at Thompson Boling arena (located on the University of Tennessee campus) and performed before their largest crowd to date...over 15,000 people. That was definitely the show to attend!
What you thought were drums/percussion WERE the guy beating his chest. He is Kevin Olusola, one of the world's best beatboxers, and a musical genius. PTX *occasionally* use instruments, but if they do, you will always see them. Kevin also plays a mean cello, and is featured doing what he calls cello-boxing, playing cello at the same time he's beatboxing, on some of their songs.
@@eddybassreactsKevin is truly a musical genius……concert cello and saxophone, perfect pitch, wonderful arranger and one of the sweetest, humblest people in the world…….and has the world’s best LAUGH!!!😂
5 musically gifted aliens blessing us with their God given voices. Welcome to the PTX family. You have a deep rabbit hole with this group. Will recommend you check out their 1st Grammy take of Daft Punk.
Avi Kaplan the bass is writing and singing his own music. He is on tour right now in Europe. His music is great nothing like it out there. Also check out Home Free their bass Tim is great.
Pentatonix just released an updated version of this song, sung live, just the five of them sitting on stools with microphones. You can see how they sound like on stage. And it's extraordinary!
@@eddybassreacts It was! Apparently Kevin's not doing the foot stomps as much anymore because, according to one fan, he was having problems with his knees. But he makes up for it with the sounds that come out of his mouth, which are just amazing!
Avi Kaplan, the bass, has opera training, which is why he can sustain notes so well. He and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer) were one of the tightest rhythm sections in any genre. Avi has a successful solo career these days in a very different style and is very worthy of reaction. Loved this one!
Thanks for the reaction and appreciation. I believe you experienced your first Mitch-slap when the guy with the hat had his solo. He is a natural counter-tenor. The low end is by Avi Kaplan, a natural basso-profundo. Imagine, it's fate to have them in one vocal band.
@@eddybassreacts Clarification and added context: the request is for Pentatonix's Daft Punk Medley. Daft Punk is an electronic music duo (now disbanded) with a substantial music catalog of their own.
Subscribed for more Pentatonix (PTX). PTX was formed in 2011 in order to compete on the national TV show called the Sing Off. They won. They sing all genres specializing in Pop and Christmas music. I dare you to find a bad song in their extensive catalog. About 95% of their music is full a cappella while the rest has some light instrumentation, usually Kevin’s cello. The members are: Scott - tall blonde Baritone with a range from bass to tenor. He is the king of riffs and runs. His stature and personality makes him the frontman for PTX, but the leads and solos are shared by whatever fits the songs. Kirstin - lady Alto Soprano. She has a Disney voice but can sing with belting power. She had a singing lead on Broadway in Kinky Boots. Mitch - Countertenor. He has a rare distinctive voice and can cover many octaves. He has some amazing sound effects. The sheer wonder you feel when he sings some of those notes is called being Mitch slapped. These first three singers are the main vocalists and sang together prior to PTX in high school as The Trio. Avi - bearded Bass. He has a great range as well and his low notes do break speakers in concert. He left the band amicably in 2017 and now has a fantastic solo career. Kevin - Beatboxer/Cellist/Tenor. He is probably the most versatile of the band. He can beatbox and play the cello at the same time (Celloboxing) as well as playing several other instruments. He has a beautiful tenor voice as well. He graduated premed at Yale and can speak Chinese. He has his own music channel. The beatboxer and bass form the rhythm section providing a solid foundation for the main vocalists. The rhythm section can also sing and the main vocalists can produce effects. The member who isn’t in this video is Matt. He took over bass from Avi in 2017. He has a warm buttery voice and is a real showman on stage. PTX has 3 Grammy wins out of 5 nominations. They also have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. They are finishing up a tour now and have yearly Christmas tours. Their record label has harsh copyrighting so you may need to pause with commentary a lot and use image filters. We Pentaholics don’t mind. Recommend their cover of The Prayer.
@@eddybassreacts Matt can't go quite as low as Avi could, and his chest voice is less resonant, but he makes up for it with a more dynamic range that reaches higher. In fact, Matt and Scott have almost identical vocal ranges, but are textbook examples of how _vocal quality_ in various octaves differs between true bass & baritone. Scott takes over the bass line (as needed) whenever the bass (Avi or Matt) takes the lead.
Dude...there were no drums or percussion being played. It was all beat boxing...vocals!!! By the human drum machine called Kevin. There is a brand new Hallelujah video Pentatonix has put out, just a couple of weeks ago. It is a live version. Just them and microphones 🎤. You probably should check it out. (The background is a pinkish color.) Great reaction. Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix (PTX). Please do more from them. Hope you are doing well. Sending you love from Texas ❤❤

@@eddybassreacts Pentatonix may have caught my ADD attention but your reaction was perfect. You listened and appreciated without talking too much and there was no AI!!! Imo you’re doing this right! But I have to admit lol I have an addiction to a sleazy bassline and cannot resist the possibility of hearing one lol I was introduced to victor Wooten almost 20 years ago and promptly began searching for more bass artists!
One stated goal that Pentatonix has is to push the envelope of acapella. There are other groups that also do that. Each of the top groups targets a different audience so you have Voctave, Voice Play, Home Free, and Pentatonix. While there is overlap in what they do, they target different audiences.
If you really want to know what he can do listen to their cover of the prayer, I also saw you did a reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen they also did an a cappella version that is amazing that I think you would find very interesting
Subbed from more PTX. Would love to see you react to Imagine or anything with Avi (the origional bass, the new one forgets he is there for bass and does not have a good singing voice).
I believe Matt is talented in his own right, and in fact he has a wonderful singing voice and fits into the group well. Avi is off doing his own thing. The past is past.
FYI...Their UA-cam channel boasts over 20 million subscribers, yielding more than 6 billion video views. Pentatonix has had two #1 albums on Billboard's Top 200 ...
so i posted my comment before the end. there is no adding anything, it's all just them, whether it's from their mouths or their feet or beating their chests. it's all just them!

Their record label has harsh copyrighting so you may need to pause with commentary a lot and use image filters. We Pentaholics don’t mind.
Recommend their cover of The Prayer.
Wow... Awesome! Thank you soo much this light ❤️💡... And thanks for subscribing🙏
Welcome to PTX.
Thank you 😀.. I love them
Great reaction!
Subbed for more PTX!
Thank you for your subscription.. We have a DEAL, more PTX coming😀
(The background is a pinkish color.)
Great reaction. Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix (PTX). Please do more from them.
Hope you are doing well. Sending you love from Texas ❤❤
WoooooW.. That sounded soo original like real drums! I must say the Audio engineers did a great job there... I'm definitely going for more of them.
Love & light from Africa ❤️ 💡
Welcome to the Pentatonix foxhole ;) Incredible voices
Awesome Team, love them
There is so much more. Subbed for more PTX! Thank youfor your reaction.

Thank you soo much for watching and subscribing, more to come 😀
@@eddybassreacts Pentatonix may have caught my ADD attention but your reaction was perfect.
Wow.. Victor wooten is about the finest in the world right now, we all appreciate him
More Pentatonix please
More to come fam 😃
⚡⚡⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡⚡⚡⚡

PLEASE READ THE COMMENT HERE FROM ALANFREEMAN. MORE PTX PLEASE. WE PENTAHOLICS LOVE THEM SO.
GREETINGS FROM SOUTH AFRICA
More to come 😀! Love&light from Nigeria ❤️💡
One stated goal that Pentatonix has is to push the envelope of acapella. There are other groups that also do that. Each of the top groups targets a different audience so you have Voctave, Voice Play, Home Free, and Pentatonix. While there is overlap in what they do, they target different audiences.
Awesome groups.. I love all of them you mentioned.
there is a brand new release of this song - live by PTX - look it up :)
Okayyy. I'll check that out.
If you really want to know what he can do listen to their cover of the prayer, I also saw you did a reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen they also did an a cappella version that is amazing that I think you would find very interesting
Wow... Amazing team indeed.. I'll check out your recommendation.. Thank you soo much ❤️
I like how you play the song straight through , most dont at all....
Thank you soo much for watching…
Subbed from more PTX. Would love to see you react to Imagine or anything with Avi (the origional bass, the new one forgets he is there for bass and does not have a good singing voice).
Thank you for the sub.. More PTX
I believe Matt is talented in his own right, and in fact he has a wonderful singing voice and fits into the group well. Avi is off doing his own thing. The past is past.
This is really beautiful ~ Please check out Pentatonix's "Mary Did You Know" It is on par with this video ~ New sub!
Thank you soo much for watching... And thanks for the sub
FYI...Their UA-cam channel boasts over 20 million subscribers, yielding more than 6 billion video views. Pentatonix has had two #1 albums on Billboard's Top 200 ...
WoooooW... That's massive! They deserve all that, they're really amazing
Their best song in my eyes is Mary did you know
Listened to it again earlier today, really loved it
Subbing for more PTX please! 🙂
Alriiiight DEAL... More coming then 😀
so i posted my comment before the end. there is no adding anything, it's all just them, whether it's from their mouths or their feet or beating their chests. it's all just them!
Wow.. Then that's totally amazing.. 'cos I find it hard to believe.
