There was a bad storm once when we on a Viking Line (Finland, not Viking Cruises) ship between Helsinki and Stockholm. It was in December, so there was also ice in the water, and the crew told us in the morning that the captain stayed up all night for that one. They stayed in visual contact all night with a Siljaline ship as well, you could see it from the windows. It was definitely rocking and rolling, and then that sick feeling when you hear the ice grate against the hull.
I don't know how you're not on TV narrating shows like this. The production quality and narration is as good as any shock reality show that's ever aired on network television.
On a Navy ship I was officer of the deck on, crossing the North Atlantic in December we were taking green water over the bridge, 80 ft above the water. I have a great appreciation for the power of the sea
When I told my navy veteran grandfather about my experience on a winter cruise between Finland and Sweden, he guffawed. I said that it was only a few hours of open seas but he said what a few hours it was! And it indeed was, though most of the time that's an uneventful cruise. He was a WW2 veteran, and they patrolled the Scapa Flow.

A 25-minute ferry! That's why I'm here. The sea is so foreign to me and the couple of times I've been in boats it's been so awful, I'm dreading my vacations just because I'm scared of the ride 😂
Me either. Even if it's free. In a few weeks a friend is going to Mexico on a cruise as it was postponed during covid. What??? Besides its winter and the cartels are in control who is to say they won't storm the ship and kidnap the thing. There 8s no police on those ships. Its terrifying. Even if they don't go ashore its still scary. No thanks.
As long as you stay in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, or around the Bahamas, you won’t really see these rough seas. It’s when crossing the Atlantic or Pacific or the North Sea you have rough seas.
They survived, didn’t they? If you’ve never seen this before, it is pretty scary. Most ships will survive, but if there is loss of control due to engine or electrical failure things can get lifethreatening very fast.
Ah, the Irish crossings will put hair on your chests. As a kid in the 80s we got stuck just 10 miles from Dublin overnight on a very old ferry. Everyone was crying, with no possible rescue as the storm was too bad. Corridors in life jackets and sick bags. There were priests heading up groups of women cracking out novenas. The new fleet brought in through the 90s were game changers. No one even left the bars, regular travellers were like battle hardened sailors. Us Teens like 'this is nothing, we've seen sh!t'.
Earlier this year in June I was aboard the carnival Mardi Gras, one of the largest ships in the carnival line. We were going through the Caribbean, and remember the seas being super rough during the entirety of this 10 day trip. My butt was clenching so hard, I’m pretty sure it got muscle built lol… if I was on such a large ship and IT was getting rocked around, I can’t imagine being on anything smaller without actually crapping myself. Anyway, I’m going on another cruise this upcoming summer along Mexico!
was just on the carnival celebration, their biggest ship we were ROCKING the whole time, im not new to cruises and it was some of the worst i’ve ever experienced, and the waves were definitely not the worst i’ve seen, i learned when ships are slower they rock more, but that’s mostly all it is so hopefully that’s some piece of mind!

The big problem on Viking Sky was that the oil level for all the engines was at the minimum mark, apparently that was quite normal at the time of the incident in the company. That did not go well when the ship encountered rough weather, making all engines (4 of them, if I remember correctly) fail.
Yes we lost all 4. It was later determined that, as a result of drifting, we were a ship's length away from likely hitting the rocky coastline. VERY fortunately, they got an anchor to hold. We could not launch the boats due to the bad conditions. My wife and I were among the 400+ who were evacuated by helicopter.
Why would a cruise liner engine team choose to operate at minimal lubricant level during a sequence of putting out to sea? That seems one step from being criminally negligent in overall operational scheme & consideration of safety toward your passengers. Someone in charge of such things who "made the call" should have answered to hearings & investigated for possible applicable charges. Was this somehow a norm in operations across the industry? Very problematic if it was..
Anthem of the seas clip is normal, the cabin is on the lowest deck of the passenger cabins way below the lifeboat deck as can be seen on the image of it, the square windows are passenger cabins and are roughly 15 to 20 feet above the waterline so waves hitting them happens all the time.
The main reason why people are sent to their cabins in modern ships is that the ships can stay afloat but just like the second clip, staff are more concerned about furniture rolling around and hit you. In your cabin there is very little furniture that can hit you.
Those poor people. The seas are not always friendly. As much as I love the ocean. I wouldn't want to go through that. Big respect for those who work out on the Ocean. GOD Bless.
Was on Royal Caribbean's Fantasy in the Gulf of Mexico in 2008. The cold front that caused snow in New Orleans moved into the Gulf and hit us on the way to Cancun with 30 foot waves. Half of the passengers were sea sick and didn't show up for several meals. The swimming pool lost a lot of its water. Took me two days once we got back to lose my "sea legs".
Royal Caribbean does not have a ship called Fantasy, also, in any storm as you describe all pools are immediately drained to lower the centre of gravity of the ship.
@@andrewwatkins4852 Nope, there is a Disney Fantasy, and a Carnival Fantasy but no ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet is named Fantasy. The Liberty has two sister ships, Freedom and Independence so I call you out as a liar
The power of the ocean is something you have to see to truly understand and believe. Just watching a video of it is not enough. Until you are on the deck of a ship and looking up to a wall of water as tall as high rise office building, you just don't get it. It is *awesome* in the most literal definition of that word.
Thank you for actually showing the clips. So tired of people finding these videos and talking over everything happening or just showing pictures that arent even from the actual topic.
If it is not the cameraman that survives, it sure will be John Wayne who single handed keeps the boat afloat , while flying the helicopter and saves 120 folks each time to the nearest shore which is 800 miles away and does it 12 times on the same tank full of fuel. Then goes back and brings the sunken ship back to Port suffering only a broken arm . what a GUY.
Everyone who boards a ship must know where their lifeboat station is. You can think 111 years of safety regs following the Titanic sinking for that. Speaking of which, if there was a more orderly evacuation of the Titanic, more lives would've been saved.
Wow when that one ship's window blew that must have been a hell of a blow to the window. The power of water is kind of terrifying when you think about it.
I have eaten soup in that weather. I have also been thinking why no one has recorded the stuff I saw in the North Atlantic sea. It's because of the sheer fear of your life. You don't think "Ow let me take a selfie with a 100 foot wave".
That second clip gets me every time. The people sitting there define the word stupid. There's literally a one thousand pound piano waiting to break free from the floor and crush everyone in it's path. A lady literally gets hit in the head with a ceiling panel and doesn't move an inch while it's swinging around waiting to hit her again. There's a glass table dancing around the room just begging to remove somebodies legs in a cinematic fashion. The guy filming even says "get that on video", like it's going to be used as evidence of how the cruise liner can control the weather and make people not be absurdly clueless. People, is the worse person to be around when common sense and self preservation will save your life.
I feel the same, however, sadly, I feel the guy getting everything on video was purely for financial gain to claim back on insurance or sue the company. Money is more valuable than common sense to most.
I recently was on the Carnival Sunshine, we did encounter a storm while heading to Princess Cays in the Bahamas. Sadly we couldn’t get to the island because of the swells and another ship that was already there almost capsized while trying to leave so they didn’t move for over a day. Hats off to both ship captains and crews for keeping the patrons safe.
Damn right! Now her 1st namesake was one heck of a roller, and not only nearly capsized, but could "roll the milk out of a cup of tea". The Queen Mary has had plenty of people turning green during her sea career.. Let's just say she isn't going anywhere in her current Long Beach lagoon😉
“Ladies and gentlemen, due to the extreme wave activity and to avoid any unnecessary injuries, we request that everyone return to their cabin. You might have noticed tables, chairs, and some potted plants moving back and forth across the lounge areas. For your convenience, the chair of your choice will follow you across the ship, and meet with you at your cabin.”
Not gonna lie, I laughed at the lady getting clocked in the head with a ceiling tile. It was so unexpected and almost cartoonish! But if I was in a place where furniture was flying around (and they had some deep faith in that piano’s anchors!!) I’d be hauling ass back to my cabin! … maybe I’d even ride a chair back to it!

The natural disaster is truly too great!

This, my friends, is why I'd never go on a cruise ship.
Love watching these. I’m on Ovation of the Seas right now bound for Sydney and the Pacific is so smooth it’s easy to forget you’re on a ship!
Thanks goodness the piano stayed put .

"...the worst cruise ship disaster of all time?" No mention then of the Costa Concordia on which 32 died, after which the ship was scrapped.

Yes...I'm here to tell about it. I was on the Sky. We were on the return journey from a Northern Lights cruise.
The best part of this was all the cruise line commercials during this video.
WoW some of your story's are both fascinating and scary at the same time. Enjoy your trip to Beautiful Mexico 🇲🇽 and stay safe ❤

Utube and the couch are the best places to see the ships 😂! I totally agree with you!

She was trying to get paid lol probably cited emotional distress and did lol
And these are the reasons why I will never go on a cruise. The ocean scares me when she’s wild .

As long as you stay in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, or around the Bahamas, you won’t really see these rough seas. It’s when crossing the Atlantic or Pacific or the North Sea you have rough seas.
That ocean don't fuck around🌊⛴️

Luckily the camera man always survives !
If it is not the cameraman that survives, it sure will be John Wayne who single handed keeps the boat afloat , while flying the helicopter and saves 120 folks each time to the nearest shore which is 800 miles away and does it 12 times on the same tank full of fuel. Then goes back and brings the sunken ship back to Port suffering only a broken arm . what a GUY.
😂😂
Crazy thing is, my grandma was supposed to go on that carnival cruise ship during that time. I am happy AF she didn't 😂😂😂
This is why cruise lines require everybody to participate in their muster drills!
Everyone who boards a ship must know where their lifeboat station is. You can think 111 years of safety regs following the Titanic sinking for that. Speaking of which, if there was a more orderly evacuation of the Titanic, more lives would've been saved.
why is furniture not attached?
Yeh you'd of thought being at sea it'd be fixed to the floor to stop casualties
Yeah, good question

Wow when that one ship's window blew that must have been a hell of a blow to the window. The power of water is kind of terrifying when you think about it.

I have eaten soup in that weather. I have also been thinking why no one has recorded the stuff I saw in the North Atlantic sea. It's because of the sheer fear of your life. You don't think "Ow let me take a selfie with a 100 foot wave".
Captains gotta be insane to do that job haha amazing!
When I was in the Army, I lost my rifle and was charged $83. That's why in the Navy, the Captian goes down with the ship.
gee, thanks, I got sea sick just watching this!😄
That second clip gets me every time.
It's a good thing that piano was bolted in place..too bad none of the other furniture was!
It's real easy to watch a film and critize people. Had you been with them, you'd be doing the same thing. It's called shock.
I feel the same, however, sadly, I feel the guy getting everything on video was purely for financial gain to claim back on insurance or sue the company. Money is more valuable than common sense to most.
@CleoS-vx5pd what is he gonna sue about? They go around storms but can't stop all the waves. I wish him luck
@CleoS-vx5pd when they got there is irrelevant. They are all there.
I'm getting seasick just watching these videos
And I don't get seasick
I recently was on the Carnival Sunshine, we did encounter a storm while heading to Princess Cays in the Bahamas. Sadly we couldn’t get to the island because of the swells and another ship that was already there almost capsized while trying to leave so they didn’t move for over a day. Hats off to both ship captains and crews for keeping the patrons safe.
It looks like 2016 was a curse year for the cruise industry weather wise 😭
The guy who was supposed to play on the ship laughing at the waves crashing at the window. No survival skills whatsoever. That’s terrifying dude wtf😭
The Queen Mary 2 breezes through this kinda sea conditions all the time, with no issues. But then again, she's an Ocean Liner.
Damn right! Now her 1st namesake was one heck of a roller, and not only nearly capsized, but could "roll the milk out of a cup of tea". The Queen Mary has had plenty of people turning green during her sea career.. Let's just say she isn't going anywhere in her current Long Beach lagoon😉
I have shivers just looking at this sitting here on my couch
And you all thought Carnival was the first cruise line who had a rollercaster.
I was on the very first Viking ocean cruise ship. Talk about elegance..
But this captain in this video I can’t believe this company actually hired someone like this
This video is exactly why I've never been on a cruise.

5:32 It's probably a good idea to have the piano bolted down.
You would think all that stuff would be.
Not probably, definately. I love playing piano but I surely don't want it to crash into me!
These videos just keep telling me over and over that I will NEVER sail on a cruise ship to anywhere, it even a small ship, a boat, a canoe, or even a kayak! Water terrifies me so much I do,not even go into a swimming pool! But I will take a tub bath😄😄

Can you imagine what it's like to play the Steinway grand piano while it's moving around on deck?
The piano was actually anchored. Surprised the large round planters weren’t anchored as well.
