"One reason I smile on stage is because I know I'm completely crushing perceptions of not only what a violin can do or what music can possibly sound like but also what a black man is capable of." So love that spirit. Rock on brothers. Rock on.

Black men have always been capable! It’s the stereotypes, prejudice, and pure ignorance that has crushed his spirit these past centuries. I’m preaching this to myself as well because I’ve had moments of ignorance in the past. I’m not perfect, but God is bringing me along!
      ❤️ Love these talented men!

I'm not black, but I know the same stereotype. I am 6ft2, 260 pounds, shaved head because I am going bald, scars all over my face from accidents as child, and dark bags under my eyes because I work at a computer all day. I also have a strong case of resting bitch face. When I meet new people it's easy to notice they are visibly tense by the sight of me, as if I am some skin-head neo-nazi drug dealer who kills people for money. To counter this I always try to be polite as possible. I excessively say please and thank you to everyone I meet. Truth is I'm kind of a softy. I write a lot of poetry and sing love ballads in the shower. Never judge a book by it's cover folks.

Music is for ALL. Pagannini started it all, he was the first rock star, called "the man in black", because of his quest to impress the ladies the stuff shirt preachers shit talked him and said he sould his soul, thats where that whole thing about musicians selling there souls started lol and all the chill preachers just sat back and chuckled because instead of shying away Pagannini embraced it to promote himself which caught all his critics off guard, he wore even more black cloths and started growing his hair out longer. The moral of the story is that that great musical mind didn't give a shit what people thought of him, it was about creating what Mos Def calls "The Ecstatic"...take us higher, that's what music is about, take us higher.

  • @SobrietyandSolace

This is highly encouraging and inspiring to see. Regardless of ethnicity you are a fantastic artist and a joy to listen to, but if we're going to point out the obvious (omg he's black), this means a lot to me on a personal level. I grew up in a shitty housing project surrounded by drugs, domestic violence and somehow won a scholarship/bursary to a prestigious private school (after initially being rejected despite scoring second highest out of 700 students; take a guess why!). Whilst at the school I couldn't afford any of the residential trips or music lessons but I wanted to fit in with the rich white girls so badly. I had a snobby, nasty music teacher who was horribly dismissive of me but I taught myself flute, piano, guitar and whatever else I could get my hands on, sneaking into the music department before school, during breaks and even after hours (I knew the key code). I loved being in orchestra, choir and several other bands even if I couldn't (and still can't) read music. Too many black youths grow up today thinking the world of classical instruments/music is one they don't belong to which is not true. Whenever I go to the theatre, ballet, a concert or a horse show I am always the only black person, there which makes me self-conscious and disappointed that lots of young people like me may have second thoughts about participating in these things for that very reason and subsequently, their absence cyclically reinforces the stereotype that black people do not have any interest in these 'refined and cultured' things, as subjective as that is.
Oh and even if you don't like Classical (or Baroque or Romantic) period music, there are so many stylistic crossovers to enjoy (like in this video) and the many classical samples in hip hop that turn the tables by deliberately playing on the juxtaposition created by cultural stereotypes. We should appreciate the contribution to popular music the masters have made. I think we wouldn't have metal if it weren't for Bach and Beethoven lol

Very insightful. Black Violin is playing in our town Sat. Night at the fancy theater, but before that they're playing at our local community center where I work part time. It's the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center, so there will be a lot of kids there. I'm the old white dude janitor in a sea of black and brown people, but they accept me. I ain't never been prejudiced. Can't want to see, hear, and meet these guys.

Daymo02 Hallelujah and Amen to that. Black men are doing all types of things other than rapping not that there is anything wrong with rapping. There are hundreds of black men and women in every area of the arts. I can't name them all but thankfully we live in an age of the internet where little black boys and girls can be exposed to other things in a way that they could not before because of the expense that may be involved. There are not only black violinist, but cellist, pianists, and conductors, not to mention also in fields other than music and sports. It is all about exposure. When my son was born, I began saving my coins. I brought him to symphonies, plays, museums, sporting events, amusement parks, traveled to other countries, had him join cub scouts, go camping, play pop warner, little league, bowling, basketball, space camp, try martial arts, and even though it dove me crazy, let him try BMX for a while, go to comic con & gamer conventions. He found his niche, computers and gaming. Now for the time being works in the gaming industry and loving it.

+Szion Blue "Yo" isn't a word, yo. And straight up, this is just passable violin playing; you can find music students in a half dozen Music Conservatories and music schools right here in the NY area alone who can fiddle even better than these guys. What is "straight up" fantastic about them is they have a great marketing machine behind them and they throw in hip-hop nonsense along with a classic instrument that they play only marginally well and bingo, they've got themselves a hook that the sheeple buy into. Listen carefully to what they actually are playing and there's nothing at all exceptional about it....other than it's fast, not clean or precise or difficult music. Listing to some REALLY talented young violinists playing some really sophisticated classical violin music and you will see what exceptional really is...and that this is not, either straight up or sideways.

+Captain Cinema You're wrong. They may not be the most talented musicians on the planet, but they're *different*. You can play 1000 Bach concertos or every Vivaldi piece, but you don't compete with these people. Why? Because they came up with something new, violins aren't only classical, they can be played in many different ways, and just because two people did something different doesn't mean they don't deserve the credit for doing it. It's like saying rap isn't good because they aren't singing - that's the point. They *aren't* singing, and bravo to them for making something new.

+Zeusrulezs10h1 Different doesn't always necessarily mean better...or even good for that matter. Then again, whether people like it or not is very subjective. People seem to have really thought it was great to hear John Cage play a single tone for three hours. Sure it was different. Was it anything worth hearing even a first time, let alone more than once? That depended on the individual that spent that three hours listening to a G#. Some will love it; some will say, WTF. As for this little ditty, for those who seem to appreciate it and it gives them pleasure, they are welcome to that subjective assessment -- it's their prerogative; but I think you can see from my post that my subjective opinion about this piece is pretty much, WTF -- which is MY prerogative.

+Captain Cinema What is important here is the message, not their ability to play the violin, they do not pretend to be the best violinists here, so please stop trying to put them down. They are not even that popular, they are conveying a freaking positive message and every human being should be ok with trying to annihilate stereotypes. You're missing the point. Totally. Missing. The. Point.

    • @RonanArm
      @RonanArm 9 років тому

I have to say the captain is right. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, saying they're not good violinists based on their stage performances is incorrect. I'm a pretty good violinist, but I often don't play that much, because it's hard and doesn't usually sound as nice as playing to half my potential. If you want someone that is OBVIOUSLY a good violinist that does this kind of thing, look at David Garrett or Ben Lee.

Your brilliance and mastery are truths in anyone's face. Thank you showing the world! It's a better place with you in it! Thank you for addressing stereotypes through your music and also your words. I grew up with white skin but have alot of Native American in me and with a maiden name that had me physically and mentally bullied as a child. Also, as a child because my nose looked "different" than white people's usually do. I have played the violin and classically trained since age 10. 50 now and branched out to playing hip-hop. Taught alot of children to play classically, but also fiddle techniques, and also some hip-hop. Most fulfilling thing to be able to teach a child!💖

    Ho. Lee. Shit.
I came across you guys when an ad for your song played on Lindsey Stirling's channel. Normally I skip ads as soon as possible (and get annoyed when UA-cam doesn't let me.) Not this time.
The INSTANT the song started playing I began searching desperately for more info about you guys. Liked, subscribed, I will buy your songs. You absolutely have a brand new dedicated fan. Keep striving, keep playing, keep spreading your message, and keep being incredible role models with your music.

So I have a major project I started 7am this morning, I look for my usual Bach for concentration...later UA-cam pushes this through..im still typing as the melody roads, carrying my emotions in a ride of a life time, my thirsty soul was filled to giddy!
It's 3:37 pm project done, but I have shared and listemed and still listening.
Brothers are just...what can I say, always taking things to NEXT LEVEL AWESOME!

A friend got me hooked on Black Violin's first album and I've been a fan of theirs ever since. They are amazingly talented and creative. Of course, whenever Black people dare to step outside of the comfortable little boxes small-minded people like to put us in, they lose what little minds they have, hence the oh so casual dismissal of these young men's talent and drive. Besides, if Apocalyptica (whom I also love) can play cello rock/metal, why not hip hop and violins?
