I'm sure the movie creators based the way they made the Hippogriffs on birds like ducks. My little duck always bowed his head when introduced to someone, and the person was required to stroke his head in one specific place or he'd yell at them. Also, the dragon in Gringotts, when they were escaping, was breathing like my other male duck would after he would attack me for looking at him :D
