you can mimic a language without speaking (knowing) it. Take most young English speaking kids, many of them know how to count to 10 in Spanish, but if you ask them to just say the number seven without going through the list in order unless they have had previous experience they would not be able to answer, without going through the list.
I believe that Herpo first created a horcrux using a snake and the bound he had with the creature allowed him to somewhat undertand it. That conection later was developed into parseltongue.
I believe it can be understood (Dumbledore) and you can imitate a few words here and there (Ron) but you can't be fluent unless it's in your blood (Harry/Voldemort).
Harry Potter Folklore hey I was wondering if you could do a video on how they set up the barrier between the muggle world and the magical one yes I was like your first three comments
I was watching u when u were at 1000 and it doesn't seem that long ago and now to look at it now it's grown significantly u deserve this for ur effort, dedication and the connection u have with ur subs. Ur a true legend
Omg u replied, but I believe u have made a community like no other idk why but this community seems to respect one another and encourages one another with no hate or mean comments I love this community and u hold my utmost respect for making this community which I plan to stay with for much longer
I'm pretty confident that Herpo the Foul is an ancestor of Salazar Slytherin and that's how Salazar got his hereditary gift to speak Parseltongue. I also feel that Parseltonuge was created by Herpo using a snake as a Horcrux and gaining the ability that way.
Raining Pigs Studios but personally i prefer him dying against bellatrix because he died in harrys arm and had a grave and a really lovely last time with his friends in the battle harry probablt wouldnt have been there if he died and it would be even more emotional but if he survived then i wouldnt have to cry
This is certainly not cannon but I truely think it s plausible that magic teaching wasn't even divided into categories and subject in their era each founder presumably taught he s class formed of student belonging only to his house all magical styles and methods they know long before subject and subsequently joint classes were added into hogwarts curriculum
Let's see Gryiffindor probably taught Defense Against The Dark Arts, Slytherin taught Potions, Hufflefuff taught Charms and Ravenclaw taught Transfiguration.
I was fascinated with the language ever since I was 8, seeing "Chamber of Secrets" for the first time. Hearing the whispering, hissing reminiscent syllables was the first exposure I had to snakes being secret keepers of arcane mystical knowledge, both in the Harry Potter universe and in shamanism/witchcraft like practices. In the video games with speaking to the snake Malfoy summoned, and with Harry hearing the voice of the Basilisk (in English) in the film, it was made more clear that those who can speak Parseltongue hear and/or speak it as their native tongue, but to others, it sounds like a series of whispering, hissing syllables strung together in a random order. I am interested in seeing whether or not Newt Scamander can understand Parseltongue when he comes in contact with Nagini in "Crimes of Grindlewald". He is a magiozoologist, meaning he works with magical creatures and investigates their living habits regularly; heck, he even has whole enclosures and fields for them to run around in in his TARDIS suitcase. I would not say he was born with the ability to speak/understand Parseltongue, but I think maybe he could understand snakes (magical or mundane) through other means.
Love your stuff. Just a quick correction from a linguistic standpoint, the two examples of parseltongue used here do not contain any nasal (i.e. 'n' 'm' 'ng') or liquid sounds (i.e. 'L' 'r'). They are composed of vowels and voiceless fricatives (specifically 's' 'f' and 'h'), with own voiceless velar stop ('k'). Together it would look like "saihasa efeiska" (sorry not IPA). The hiss-like sound is from the voiceless fricatives
I don’t know if you have already done it or if it has been explained already, but you should do a video on if Harry was still able to speak Parseltongue after Voldemort destroyed the horcrux within him
I think it originates from a human (Wizard or Witch) that had to speak with a snake in a life or death situation and their magic responded by giving them the ability to speak with snakes. And as that ability was created and merged with their magic, it became hereditary.
Love the vid! I look at parseltoungue as a mix, as in you can learn it but it can be hereditary. Such as when its hereditary it gives you the ability to understand what snakes are saying to you whereas when you learn it you can only understand a person speaking to you in parseltoungue. Like if genetically your ears pick up the certain sounds a snake makes but if you don't have the genetic basis you can't understand the snakes directly though you can still learn the language and speak it to other humans, since humans can understand another human speaking parseltoungue like they heard Harry in chamber of secrets etc. but they don't hear the snake
My nephew experienced the almost-similar thing when Harry and the Dursleys went to the zoo. He was 3 and all the snakes were sleeping. I knocked their glass cage to wake them (just like Dudley did) but they seemed so uninterrupted. But when I decided to walk away, my nephew stick his face to the glass, and keep staring at them like a minute or two, then say something weird that sounded like 'salah salah salah'. All the snakes in the cage were up, and started to come near my nephew. I was scared that the snakes would scare my nephew so I wanted to take him to move away. But he stoned and didn't let his eyes off the snakes. He seemed so happy watching those snakes. Omg as a Harry Potter fan, I was so scared that he was a parselmouth haha. 🤣🤣
It's mythology from all over the world, Nagini is a Hindi word. She was inspired by Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, even the Bible. It's common in literature and even more so in fantasy literature, which in itself is a sort of re-working of mythology and old literature, seeing that it was created by George McDonald, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien who were literature professors fascinated by mythology :-)
James Karoub but we don't really know what it takes to become an animagus. We only know it takes up to a year, and part of the process is holding a mandrake leaf in your mouth for a month and citing the same incantation (I forgot what) every night.
"What if Lily or James survived?" like, what if Lily used the love protection on James and Harry, or James be the one to use the love protection on Harry and Lily!
I can't find this anywhere but I think it would be interesting to discuss how the battle would have played out if Snape wasn't chased out from the school when he was looking for Harry. Would they have had a sincere moment etc, would Snape help fight once he had relayed the message?
Hi!, nice video, have you ever done a video on Madam Pomfrey? I`m reading the books again, and I noticed she`s everywhere and I know nothing about her hahaha.
can you have a video that explains why Dolores Umbridge never was send to Azkaban? She tortured Harry, used illegal spells, sent the Demintors to attack Harry and Dudley..she should have been sent to Azkaban
PipsKay I was under the impression that Dolores did go to Azkaban after the Battle of Hogwarts. Perhaps, though, J.K. never told us. I would assume she'd get killed, arrested or flee the country.
I really like your videos, and your theories about Harry Potter and I admire your work of research you do on finding clues for creating your theories and explanations about things we didn't know :) Could you perhaps explain or talk about how the soul of a wizard works? Because when Dumbledore asked (idk if it's the same in the books as the movies) Snape to kill him, instead of Draco. He talked about sacrificing, so Draco's soul wouldn't be "destroyed". What happens to Snape's soul if e.g Snape would sacrifice himself to kill someone if it's the task of someone else (Draco)? And gets a soul "destroyed" by only killing someone, you don't want to kill, or is it when you kill someone intentionally, even so you can even kill someone out of self-defense or defending your friend - how does that effect the soul? Thanks
you know i am curious since i just finished watching what if Harry was Sorted into Slytherin would affected the Plot story video but what if Draco was the same as Harry but instead sorted into Gryffindor and would it affect his role in the story?
No hate, because your channel is great and I love watching your video's, but please try to get all your photos in high resolution that would be better to watch
There's a theory that Parseltongue was created by Herpal when he placed his soul into the Basilisk he created. If that is true then I'd put a piece of my soul into a Dragon!
I did that, too, when I was a kid :-) It was called Lanterea and later, I discovered that it was actually quite similar to Saami. It's quite common, you know, linguists create languages for TV series and movies. Although Tolkien's languages are widely acknowledged to be the best by far.
I would love to see more videos about Grindelwald and Dumbledore, for example theories about witch hog warts house Grindelwald would have been in or about the 1945 duel. Is it possible that he, like Dumbledore, eventually became more morally aware and started regretting his actions? How did they become evil?
Wouldn't making parseltounge hereditary work similar to a family curse? Like Dracos wife Astoria having that illness from a curse generations ago put on her family. of course I don't know how it would work but the intentions when casting the curse would be similar (tho they did it on themselves) cause when you think about it, being a parselmouth has been more of a curse from dark magic than a cool family trait
1:40 I noticed 1 mistake, you said that human animal verbal communication had never been achieved outside of parseltounge but we know that when a person transforms into their animagus form they can communicate with others that they become (for example when Pettigrew tracked down Voldemort by talking to the rats)
I think parseltongue can be possibly taught to others, as all language can be imitated. I believe that the language becomes hereditary, not on the speaking aspect, but the understanding from a snake itself. Say a parselmouth wizard can be understood by a regular wizard but a regular wizard can't understand a snake (they can't hear their voice as a parselmouth can) the way a parselmouth can. So the hereditary aspect is something to do with being able to hear the snake and interpret the language, but a regular wizard can't hear the snake even if they did learn the actual language - they can only speak the language with another wizard
Could you think of this idea 💡 what if Draco never fixed Ye (wardrobe I can't remember the name) so the death eaters couldn't get to the room of requirements and to get into the clock tower
To draw on this: Parseltongue itself, if examined, has much ancient Indic sounding virnacular. Think where many snakes are most prevalent. India, Africa, Asia.. Indeed, I came to read once that the written orm was based on English wizards, and their ideas of the sonds of howling. As always, much intreague, friend.
According to Newt Scarmander, a lot of information on snakes and runespoors comes from Africa, there’s a lot of African parseltongue’s which would suggest it might not just be hereditary and in fact tribes could predate Herpo
Keep in mind that Herpo the Foul would have to be Slytherin's ancestor. Also it is possible to learn parselmouth as shown by Ron when he opens the chamber of secrets in book 7 to retrieve basilisk fangs.
I would imagine that snakes are partially magical creatures and we Muggles/No-Majs are unaware of their magic. They use their mouth and windpipe to create their sounds, mostly hissing which is high frequency. They hear not with ears but with their tongues. As the snakes tongue is tiny it would best pick high frequently sound. Parseltounge is not heard with the ear but rather with taste buds which are tiny and "wired" to the sound hearing part of our brain. The speakers brain turns it to speech.
Do u think it could be possible to talk with other animals like dogs or bears? Also why haven't other wizards in the future tried to unlock this kind of ability do u think?
Maybe he's like Voldermort, his family was his Horcrux, then eventually gotten so used to speaking it when he made the basilisk he had no fear cause he could control it cause it might have been his familiar.
Hey there. I've been watching many of your HP history and theories. During breakfast this morning I had a thought. While watching your video on parseltongue. Could it be possible that Hero the Foul is actually Salazar Slytherin? Hear me out. Herpo invented the first horcrux; meaning he is immortal. The lore never goes over how/if he died, only that he lived in ancient times. If we look at Voldemort after he made his first horcrux, he starts to go bald. Salazar has always been depicted as bald. Same as Herpo's image. If you look at the images of Herpo and Salazar side by side they look fairly identical.. Just a small theory that I wanted to share with you.
It would be interesting to find out more about this Herpo. Is Salazar Slytherin descended from Herpo the Foul. It would seem that answer would be yes. What happened to the Horcrux of Herpo the Foul. How long did he live.
Herpo the Foul, whose name stems from the Latin word for 'creeping animal' and the modern study of amphibians and reptiles, was also famed for being the first wizard to hatch a basilisk, besides his creation of the first known Horcrux. Ironically, Basilisk venom is one of the few substances that can destroy a Horcrux, so perhaps that's how poor Herpo possibly died; his pet Basilisk may have mistaken the dangerous object to be a chew toy.
Maayal Rizwan Most probably, Dumbledore's Phoenix would have healed him as Phoenixes are known to have healing powers...Fawkes healed Harry's wound given to him by the Basilisk with his tears in the Chamber of Secrets.
Maayal Rizwan in all likelihood he wouldn't have fallen for it and drunk it in the first place . if my memory doesn't fail me, Dumbledore stated, while being at the hospital wing with Slughorn ron harry etc, that he would not drink such a stinky thing
Maayal Rizwan Dumbledore is smart enough to know what is poisoned, also Snape would've told him since he is a triple agent . And ANYWAY Dumbledore has Fawkes and many potion masters at hogwarts to save him ( if they had time).
@@Pklrs Btw I don't think he said that. At least not in the book, don't remember the movie. He isn't in the hospital wing in the book. He doesn't say things like that in the books, and actually does generally drink mead like the one that was poisoned. He likes mead, that's why Slughorn was planning to give it to him.
He is on Famous Wizard Cards in the video games, from what I've heard, but he was never in a movie. I hope he is, though, since there is a lot I need to learn about Harry Potter lore, being the Potterhead that I am! XD
Great video and greatideas on how the parseltongue language was created. Even though I repeat myself: could you please make a video on muggle/wizarding relations, whether it would be possible to reunite and if the muggles would rediscover the wizarding world with the help of technology. Because it would be much harder for wizards of the 21st centruy to hide from CCTV, smartphones and so on.
That's quite a talent to speak to a animal that has no ears to detect sounds specially quiet sounds like that. I have a snake i can never tell if hes hiss sneezing or just breathing too hard when i pick him but now i know hes been trying communicate this whole time wish i knew what he was saying but dosent me no good cause i know he can't hear me breathing back at him.
What if Snape got to Harry before Voldermort killed him? Would Snape of confessed at that point about Lily & Dumbledore's death arranged and then unite to fight Voldermort?
It appears that Parseltongue can be *mimicked* if not taught: Ron manages to imitate Harry's Parseltongue in "Deathly Hallows."
Nick Hentschel yep.
Nick Hentschel mimicked as in "spoke parseltongue well enough to open a door that can only be opened by speaking parseltongue"?
you can mimic a language without speaking (knowing) it. Take most young English speaking kids, many of them know how to count to 10 in Spanish, but if you ask them to just say the number seven without going through the list in order unless they have had previous experience they would not be able to answer, without going through the list.
Dumbledore seems to be able to understand it, too (from his memories of the Gaunts) although I don’t think it’s ever established he can speak it
It was because of (liquid luck)
I believe that Herpo first created a horcrux using a snake and the bound he had with the creature allowed him to somewhat undertand it. That conection later was developed into parseltongue.
Ron learned some words so it can be taught
And it doesnt look very hard tho too, CMON ron learned it
Spencer MacDougall i think Harry only told him what to say
Spencer MacDougall yes Rowling said that Dumbelore understood it an could speak it but did not like to
Paladin Samuel basically learnt a few words, meaning that he could learn more, it's like learning another language
I believe it can be understood (Dumbledore) and you can imitate a few words here and there (Ron) but you can't be fluent unless it's in your blood (Harry/Voldemort).
Was that you speaking parseltongue? If it was that was very good, I think you might be slytherin's other heir
+Nazmin Nna yes that was me speaking parseltongue :) thank you :)
Harry Potter Folklore hey I was wondering if you could do a video on how they set up the barrier between the muggle world and the magical one yes I was like your first three comments
Nazmin Nna he is a slytherin actually, he said in one of his videos
Nishant Bahuguna I'm a Slytherin too and I'm parseltounge as well
hSALfFlash 38 saying savahasasa doesn't count
I was watching u when u were at 1000 and it doesn't seem that long ago and now to look at it now it's grown significantly u deserve this for ur effort, dedication and the connection u have with ur subs. Ur a true legend
+William Stephenson thank you very much William.. this time last year I had 80 subs I can't believe just 1 year later I'm sitting at 75K
Omg u replied, but I believe u have made a community like no other idk why but this community seems to respect one another and encourages one another with no hate or mean comments I love this community and u hold my utmost respect for making this community which I plan to stay with for much longer
William Stephenson is heir
I appreciate all the thought you put into your videos! Thank you for doing what you do ❤
Dude your channel is the best!!! It’s a bit insane to make a channel on this but I’m so happy you did it! Love you dude great content carry on
I'm pretty confident that Herpo the Foul is an ancestor of Salazar Slytherin and that's how Salazar got his hereditary gift to speak Parseltongue. I also feel that Parseltonuge was created by Herpo using a snake as a Horcrux and gaining the ability that way.
XD i love your attempt at parseltoungue XD
What if Dobby survived Bellatrix and joined the battle of Hogwarts?
I think that it'd be amazing. Dobby is one of my favorite characters.
Then I wouldn't cry at nights and all would be right in the world
Raining Pigs Studios then he'd died there, no offense to him but more powerful, skilled wizards died in that battle
Madison same
Raining Pigs Studios but personally i prefer him dying against bellatrix because he died in harrys arm and had a grave and a really lovely last time with his friends in the battle harry probablt wouldnt have been there if he died and it would be even more emotional but if he survived then i wouldnt have to cry
Am I the only one wondering which subjects each of the Hogwarts' founders taught?
I kind of thought the founders taught everything, but only to their houses.
This is certainly not cannon but I truely think it s plausible that magic teaching wasn't even divided into categories and subject in their era each founder presumably taught he s class formed of student belonging only to his house all magical styles and methods they know long before subject and subsequently joint classes were added into hogwarts curriculum
I think slytherin taught potions because when Harry’s at school both of the potions masters were slytherin
Let's see
Gryiffindor probably taught Defense Against The Dark Arts, Slytherin taught Potions, Hufflefuff taught Charms and Ravenclaw taught Transfiguration.
I really like this channel!! So awesome that this exists. Thank you, for bothering to do all the research. Please keep doing what you do!
Really interesting comment! I was fascinated in the language ever since I was 8 as well! XD
It's possible, Dumbledore understands parseltongue but can't speak it iirc
Nice video and whats really funny is that before this video was published I was thinking How did Parseltongue originate well now I know
I love your channel so much! It's so amazing!!! Thanks so much!!!
Your channel is legendary, mate! Keep it up!
Thank you for making that point (from a fellow linguist) :-)
Can you do a top 10 of...
• Most powerful wizards of all time
• Most skilled wizards of all time
• Overall greatest wizards of all time
Great work on this video mate! :) Love your vids so much!!!
You're officially my favourite youtuber i love your videos ❤
I have a question is Harry the last person to know how to speak parseltongue
RON hahahhahaha, Actualy Idk
Durell Reid There was another parseltongue in the Cursed Child.
Johan Hendrik van der Meer ok
Johan Hendrik van der Meer Shhh we dont talk of that.
We do not speak of "The Cursed Child!"
You sound much like Seamus Finnigan :')
I don’t know if you have already done it or if it has been explained already, but you should do a video on if Harry was still able to speak Parseltongue after Voldemort destroyed the horcrux within him
please do the ultimate harry potter tag! love your videos :)
Yaaay, thank you for doing a video on my question 😁thank you as well for the hard research!
Loved it and so far all your content!
I think it originates from a human (Wizard or Witch) that had to speak with a snake in a life or death situation and their magic responded by giving them the ability to speak with snakes. And as that ability was created and merged with their magic, it became hereditary.
what if argus filch wasn't a squib
Can you do what would happen if Lupin had joined the 3 on the hunt for horcruxes?
I appreciate the work you put into these! Very interesting :)

Love your videos man
Love you channel keep up the great work. A video suggestion that might be interesting is the how does occulmency work ?
excellent video mate. nice research
Maybe do one on how you can become an animagus. Or weapons/history of weapons.
James Karoub James, Peter, and Sirius all somehow became Anamagi out of sympathy for Remus.
+Katheryne Koelker I know that but I mean how they became animagus, and why they chose the animagus they did
James Karoub but we don't really know what it takes to become an animagus.
I watched u at 3k and u gave me a shout out and uve grown so much
Dude!!! Ur like a Harry Potter Historian!
this slays.. very helpful and interesting 💚🐍
well done i love this channel

a fantastic idea,Dean please do this one please
Ravenclaw Avenger aw I don't know, maybe she did go to Azkaban after the battle of Hogwarts..I don't know, she could have
PipsKay I thought she was after the centaur's were done with her.
newposter30 no in the next 2 books she back working at the Minister of Magic again
I wonder if there is a language to talk to Cats, Eagles, and Badgers too
matthew mann what an interesting question!
Nah we Slytherins are special.. Only we have the ambition for such a thing.
matthew mann Haha can u imagine Harry just barking at a dog or just yelling "CAW CAW!" At an eagle? 😂😂 would be so funny
DeBejaardeKleuter
Well then why aren't they developing more languages, the slackers!!!!
Jk, I'm sorry if I offended any Slytherins.
Ask dr. Dolittle i think he went to hogwarts or was at least invited.
i LOVE your channel
I am taking parseltounge language classes this summer
Very informative. You should do more on Herpo (hope I'm spelling that right) the fowl. Maybe a five facts video or something like that?
I really like your videos, and your theories about Harry Potter and I admire your work of research you do on finding clues for creating your theories and explanations about things we didn't know :)

No hate, because your channel is great and I love watching your video's, but please try to get all your photos in high resolution that would be better to watch
There's a theory that Parseltongue was created by Herpal when he placed his soul into the Basilisk he created.
If that is true then I'd put a piece of my soul into a Dragon!
were they wrong about professor trelawney? i was listening to the audiobooks and she was right quite a few times.
J.R.R Toilken created his own language and alphabet to that language, very interesting
I did that, too, when I was a kid :-) It was called Lanterea and later, I discovered that it was actually quite similar to Saami.
It's quite common, you know, linguists create languages for TV series and movies. Although Tolkien's languages are widely acknowledged to be the best by far.

I really do wish JK Rowling would find some linguist to create a Parseltongue conlang for the fans. I would learn it immediately

what is your name? I discovered your channel and I loved it!
Very very very good video ❤️
Could you think of this idea 💡 what if Draco never fixed Ye (wardrobe I can't remember the name) so the death eaters couldn't get to the room of requirements and to get into the clock tower
can you make them longer? can you do on how to get into ilvermormy school of wizard and witchcraft?
To draw on this: Parseltongue itself, if examined, has much ancient Indic sounding virnacular. Think where many snakes are most prevalent. India, Africa, Asia.. Indeed, I came to read once that the written orm was based on English wizards, and their ideas of the sonds of howling. As always, much intreague, friend.
According to Newt Scarmander, a lot of information on snakes and runespoors comes from Africa, there’s a lot of African parseltongue’s which would suggest it might not just be hereditary and in fact tribes could predate Herpo
wow I love that vid well done
Wow, great research
Great video.
You may be the heir of slytherin'.'
do a video on why abracadbra is not a spell in harry potter
Bless you for trying to speak parseltongue 😂 sounded like me after a amazing night out the morning after
Great job
+Harry Potter Folklore could u pls make a video explaining Herpo the Foul, I'm very interested in him
Herpo the Foul, whose name stems from the Latin word for 'creeping animal' and the modern study of amphibians and reptiles, was also famed for being the first wizard to hatch a basilisk, besides his creation of the first known Horcrux. Ironically, Basilisk venom is one of the few substances that can destroy a Horcrux, so perhaps that's how poor Herpo possibly died; his pet Basilisk may have mistaken the dangerous object to be a chew toy.
what if slughorn gave dumbledore that poisoned drink which nearly killed ron??
Maayal Rizwan Most probably, Dumbledore's Phoenix would have healed him as Phoenixes are known to have healing powers...Fawkes healed Harry's wound given to him by the Basilisk with his tears in the Chamber of Secrets.
Cherry_420 i know but that is on the outside of the flesh not the inside
Very interesting video
Herpo the Foul seems to be getting a lot of references. Think there will ever be a movie discussing, if not featuring him?
He is on Famous Wizard Cards in the video games, from what I've heard, but he was never in a movie. I hope he is, though, since there is a lot I need to learn about Harry Potter lore, being the Potterhead that I am! XD
Great video and greatideas on how the parseltongue language was created.
Even though I repeat myself: could you please make a video on muggle/wizarding relations, whether it would be possible to reunite and if the muggles would rediscover the wizarding world with the help of technology. Because it would be much harder for wizards of the 21st centruy to hide from CCTV, smartphones and so on.
+Luca Schlichte added to the list :)
Thank you! :)
Video Suggestion: The Life of Bellatrix Lestrange.
Damm that's cool never thought of that
video idea!!
what if proffessor slughorn gave the poisoned gift which ron nearly died from to dumbledore???
try doing 5 wizards that know parsel-tongue
What if Snape got to Harry before Voldermort killed him? Would Snape of confessed at that point about Lily & Dumbledore's death arranged and then unite to fight Voldermort?
Dean: *speaks Parseltongue*
The rest of his Slytherin friends: 👀👄👀
Thank you Harry Potter Folklore for the video
