I made a dice tower

  • A friend at work asked if I could make a dice tower. I can make anything. Usually. So, with that being said, I made a dice tower! This is made from some 4/4 cherry that I had in the shop. I resawed everything down to around 1/4 inch. Black felt in the box which I'm not super happy with. According to my wife there are different grades of felt, I had no idea.

    If you were to do it again, could the tower portion be on a hinge? To create one piece that folds? I guess the sperate pieces could be used individually....

      You could, and I've seen them that way. The only thing I think you'd have to account for would be a way to keep it from accidentally tipping back inside of itself if bumped or something. I've thought about doing one maybe with a magnet or something? Not sure. Wife wants me to make a Yahtzee box that would hold the score cards and everything. Still playing with the design on that one. Thanks for watching!

    I'd make one of these too if I had all those fancy dice

    Looks like a neat build. I have been thinking about trying one on the lathe, but I'm not certain of the process quite yet.

    Turned out really nice... one improvement I'd probably consider, make it so the tower part rotates/closes, so it's not just two separate pieces. Nice work! 🤓👍

      Live Free and DIY I thought about that, but this design led to a small cavity at the bottom. perfect spot to store the dice when not in use.

    looks good for what it is bro. i thought it was mahagony..lol you should try flocking sometime. same concept- tape off the edges apply one coat of polyurethane let that dry brush on the flocking tar stuff and then use the tube to apply the flock.while the tar is still wet. but it takes about a week for it to fully cure and flake off..good stuff bro!

    • @ReaperWoodworks
      @ReaperWoodworks  7 років тому +1

      Joe basementwoodworking thanks man. I have some flocking but I wasn't sure how it would hold up under the repeated use.

      ReaperWoodworksalways bro!!& yea I see what you mean I use it for the bandsaw boxes and it holds up great ! I just apply it real thick you know when you spray the powder i spray it on real thick let it dry for a day tap it out etc.. you know the drill..lol
      I think it would hold up good but that's just me.amd seeing that it's a commission project for a friend never the less I think you went the right route especially if you were having doubts I've learned to always go with my gut

    super cool! how is the noise level? would you consider using cork or felt inside the tower to reduce the noise? I like the 2 piece design so it is compact when not in use. it would be neat to add a couple pins to the top rotated up.

    • @ReaperWoodworks
      @ReaperWoodworks  7 років тому +1

      Scott Haun the noise isn't bad. I'm building another one soon and I'm going to add some cork to the inside ramps and see if that reduces it any. thanks for watching Scott!

    That's cool. It's something i've wanted to make and just haven't got around to it. Have you thought about flocking instead of felt? or do you think the dice need the stronger cushion. Digging the thumbnails.

    • @ReaperWoodworks
      @ReaperWoodworks  7 років тому +1

      Kaged Creations I thought about flocking, but honestly I don't know that it would hold up well over time. I'm going to order some 1/8" thick cork and slap that down inside. nice cushion, easy to cut and should last a good long time. Go make one!

      I really should. I have a ton of really cool dice, from back when I had time to play games haha.

    I love how clean and well finished this is. Great work. I made a mini dice tower (it's the first video I ever uploaded to my channel if you wanna check it out) It is a similar design in some ways but made by repurposing some bamboo desk tidys. Did you ever upload anything about your idea for improving applying the felt. I'd be interested.
    I had some trouble too, I have some sticky back stuff for my next project.

      Mind Milk D20 thanks for watching. I actually use cork board now! Great for killing some of the noise and a lot easier to work with. I just use spray adhesive to put it down. Works great and you can get big 4 packs of 12x12 sheets from the craft stores for pretty good cost.

    I would pay 25usd for that ... is that to low (hope that's not an insult), cuz it feels like 25 bucks to me, but if you're delivering it to me, I'll say 30usd. If it was a straight up trade, 3 big jars of homemade Strawberry jams or two cases of home brewed+bottled Rootbeer.
