- Johnny McQueen, leader of a clandestine Irish organization, has been hiding in the house of Kathleen and her mother, planning a hold-up that will provide his group with the funds needed to continue its activities. During the hold-up, things go sour: Johnny is wounded, cannot make it back to the hideout, and disappears in the back-alleys of Belfast. Immediately, a large-scale man-hunt is launched, and the city is tightly covered by the constabulary, whose chief is intent on capturing Johnny and the other members of the gang.

I just watched the entire film on my smartphone. It being my only source of entertainment without power due to hurricane Sandy. And it's a welcome treat to be able to view one of my favorite movies.

@@patriciarussell1177 I don't recall that there were any interruptions when I watched this back then- just after Hurricane Sandy- 2012 I think it was. Watched it in my vehicle so as to charge the smartphone at the same time. Also recall that power was restored shortly after. I don't think we were without power for more than 10 hours.
Sandy? That was in 2013. Hurricane Helene just devastated the south and east this Sept 2024.
This movie is a striking testament to the power of black-and-white cinematography. Color has its place, certainly. But the moody, stark intensity of a monochromatic palette can generate incomparable images and suspense. Thank you, Robert Krasker, for this and for "Brief Encounter" and "The Third Man."

The movies you refer to would have been diminished had they been in colour. The black and white is so atmospheric.
Still hate B & W I miss what is going on in the background as we all know color and light affect us.

Fanstastic Film. Amazing filmmaking and one of cinemas most underrated films.
James Mason, a fine distinguished actor like many others of that period. Particularly good in this but I also loved him in A Star Is Born with Judy Garland, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, Cry Terror, North By Northwest & Lolita just to name some. Don't make actors like this anymore or movies of this calibre. Those days are long gone & most movies have lost that gripping appeal that they once had. Thank goodness we can watch & enjoy them like this.
Great, moving, one of my favorites. Reed was a great director and artist. The mood, the palette, the lighting, is perfect. Reed knew how to take his time, not rushing the movie, doing it right. And the casting is superb.

alice hudson well not a northern accent, I thought this was set in Belfast. N.I accent is much harder with hardened vowels, a bit Scottish in its sound. I live in N.I.

These enchanting but Vigorous men are not to be dismissed. One must become a very careful discreet listener for all of the subtle nuances.
I saw this movie for the first time on television in the 1950s when I was in high school. I was unprepared for it. It was unlike any of the Hollywood movies that I had grown up watching. The characters and the settings and the way the story was presented put this on my list of favorite movies. I know that I had seen others, but this was the first "British" movie that I remember seeing.

They don't make movies like this anymore. Magnificent, full of doubt and faith and so beautifully realized. Hard to believe Carol Reed made this and 'The Third Man'.

10 years later and it is still a wonderful film of Quality at Hollywood would never be able to come close to today. They are so focused with affirmative-action woke messaging shaping public opinion that they I have completely forgot about putting out Quality to serve their customers. The reason Hollywood is going down the tubes movie theaters are empty award shows set a new record lows each and every year and they still don’t get it. One of the most beautiful films ever made. This was James Mason's favorite performance. I saw this as a child and many years later it still stands alone in its grandeur. And what about the performance of FJ McCormack as Shell? Pure genius!

Seen this before and the second time around brings home this masterpiece. Everything about this flick is top shelf. All the acting is excellent and Mason stands in a class of his own. Tku for post.
Truly, one of the great films, right up there with Carol Reed's other masterpiece "The Third Man."

this film is almost too painful to watch. I love how beautifully it is filmed, the music, atmosphere..[ black and white photography greatly contributes to this ].they all support the story so well. I watched it many times and after I cannot watch any other movie for a while, few seem to have so much meaning . depiction of human nature is so well portrayed, the film doesn't try to influence us, convince us of anything or change us, maybe there is its power, the impartiality.. well, its just my impression.

I'm so glad i just watched this little classic, Mason is brilliant but also are the characters he meets during his night of hell. Classic Irish noir...
Fabulous. And one can't help thinking of The Third Man, what with these shadows looming large on walls under the light of lampposts, as fugitives run through arches.

Robert Newton and James Mason in a film I've never seen before - I think I may have died and gone to the big Cinema complex in the sky..
Many have already said that this movie is a masterpiece. Indeed it is, personally I feel that this movie was far ahead of its time. You'll see great actors and supporting cast as well as the legendary James Mason. You can't go wrong with this film. It goes far into the depth of what people see and fell, that of which they rather not talk about.

Carol Reed was Oliver Reed's uncle. Both wonderfully talented and Carol Reed had a genius for choosing authentic characters and this film is a great example in the reality of the the young children to the established stars. Thank you for posting this enjoyable film.

@@TheredundantroseWhilst I agree that the name "Carol" in this case was traditionally unisex in English speaking countries, it is more of a boy's name in some parts of Europe as a variation of "Charles" (from Latin "Carolus") with varying spellings.
Nowadays in Britain it would be regarded as only a girl's name and any boy given it, would also be given a hard time (it is now seen as old fashioned and weird).
What an astounding film--despite its anti-Irish agenda (they're all heartless, as is the world, says Johnny MacQueen) and the over-fatalistic ideas behind it, director Reed and star Mason (in maybe his greatest performance ever) make it an astonishing visual and aural experience. It's harrowing and chilling, and you can't shake it off in spite of its 40s settings; Johnny's fate seems to become our own. This is a flawed, spectacular masterwork. Thanks so much for sharing it!
This story is heart-wrenching that so many who listen to the sermon from the pulpit yet not know the depth of the message. The journey for one man tossed about by others who lacked as he stated at 1:40:06 the spirit of charity.
I think this film really is a bit better than The Third Man. Great film! James Mason was great as always.

MUST SEE CLASSIC ! -- My late father was frequently mentioning it... So, I didn't missed it on the first occasion, at the Cinémathèque, half a century ago. Undoubtedly a great + quite impressive flick, and definitely worth watching, even if I've always preferred, personally, Carol Reed's "The Third Man". Both among the very best of those years.
Lovely movie. Means more to me as it was my mother's favourite. She loved the "When I was a child" speech, I love the kids begging for "pannies".
Born in 1936, I was eleven years old when this film was made. Yet, I can still remember the impact it made on Britain, of which Northern Ireland was a part August, 2023..

It isn't just Mason's speaking that is great, but you can actually see him deteriorate physically as time goes on. A great film, but not one you'd wish to see very often.

Some years ago,I opened an account in a local Building Society. The lady who dealt with me was called Carol Reed. After completing my transaction, we spent quite a while discussing the films Directed by her namesake. She was very knowledgeable about him,and his work.

I've never seen this film before, but it was great.What a drama end love story.I have to say.I wanted Johnny to escape withhis woman.

WOW! This was really good! Great storyline, backdrop, and excellent characters. I don't remember it, but I'd say this is one of the best roles for Mason. I didn't expect the Bible to be respected and quoted at the end, I was NOT ashamed but comforted, imagine... Whoever wrote this was very talented. Well preserved.

Love this old flic. James Mason (Rommel) is a genious.
He was excellent as Rommel in "The Desert Fox". Saw it again recently on Film 4. Mason was a fine actor.
He played a very sinister villain in 'Salem's Lot' and a traitor opposite Paul Newman and Harry Andrews in 'The Mackintosh Man'. But one of my favourite Mason roles wasn't as an actor but as a narrator in 'The London Nobody Knows'.

The 'noir' film works not only because of its atmospherics but with its psychological acuity or verisimilitude as well. A person falling apart as he dies wounded, or thinks he is going to die, is an excellent touch, right out of Poe's "Tell Tale Heart". This is a great example of how the genre works so well. Father Director used to say: "There is no honor among thieves." In reality there is no honor within a thief--that is why that particular direction was chosen in the first place. Midnight is not only a trope for the end of the movie but for the end of a life not well lived.

This curious film was Mason's attempt to consolidate his popularity in The Seventh Veil a couple of years before. He had no formal acting training - not necessarily a bad thing - and was heading for a career as an architect - for which he had formal training - until he got bitten by the acting bug.
In his day he was an immensely popular star known for his particular brand of languid passion. I have no idea what real Irishmen think of his accent in this melodrama but as a Yorkshireman of Irish ancestry born a stone's throw from his birthplace, Huddersfield, I hear the flattened brogue of Tykes from these parts throughout this and indeed throughout the rest of his career.
The so called 'languid passion' might in fact be simply the impression given by the languid drawl of his priviledged class of mill owners who - until the era of denim in the 69s and 70s wiped them out - had it made.
Historical note: My uncle drove for my grandfather's transport firm back in the 30s. He took load after load of quality wool fabric from Huddersfield to Hull. It was all one colour - plain grey. It puzzled him what is was for but found out a few years later whenhe was up against the Wehrmacht. It was their field grey!
Hitler certainly knew a thing or two about quality worsted and I like to think that Mason's family made a bob or two out of what was - in retrospect - treasonable 'trading with the enemy'. Of course nobody knew we would be fighting the Hun again only 20 years after the first fracas... except Churchill who, it has to be said, dragged this country into a wholly avoidable conflict.

I'm from Huddersfield - my dad worked for a legal firm that James Mason continued to use for some years even after he became famous. He would drop in at the office occasionally.
Avoidable, but I think necessary, willie, both practically and morally - but I'm happy to let that ride. All the best.
Truly a classic movie. As to Churchill, the war was very much on and well on its way to being lost when he tool over. If he did any dragging it was out of disaster and to eventual victory.
That might explain why Mason didn't sign up like his contemporary stars. I believe he was something of a conscientious objector.

Good movie. Really liked Robert Newton. You can see a resemblance there with him Keith Moon of The Who. Moon was just like Newton.
The broken shoelace- a sign of things off to a bad start. Happened to me at a race one time- sitting on the end of the trailer putting on my race shoes and the lace broke. Went out for the first practice and stuffed the car into the wall. Was back on the trailer and on my way home within an hour.
The films superb one of my favourites. I love the way the actors use their eyes and the artist who wants to paint peoples. Only one thing if the film is set in Belfast why were the children who were mocking the police officers and one of the gang the only ones to have Belfast accents.
Thought I was the only one to notice that all the accents were from south of the border!
Well done. A more expressive Mason as a young star rising.

that of the films I really love that many are written by R.C. Sheriff. He wrote this one, The
Invisible Man, Quartet, The Four Feathers, No Highway in the Sky. Of the directors, I'm
impressed by Michael Powell, James Whale, the young Alfred Hitchcock.

The ending is fantastic. Bleak as it ever should be.
An old film?.....black and white?....no matter; the opening scenes are enough to get you hooked. It's Carol Reed; every scene says something...watch the faces; watch the masterly cutting...a class act.
I love old black and white films. It's an art form called Film Noir.
Excellent movie and beautifully shot and staged. It gets really corny with the hallucinations (as just about every older movie does with those type of sequences) and I didn't buy Mason's portrayal of constantly being under some kind of fever or spell-it just comes across as forced, which a lot of portrayals of characters like that or drunk were in studio movies-but overall, it's excellent and very ahead of its time. Carol Reed was a great director.

Don't recall watching this film. Always a treat to find a hidden gem. Definitely 'noir'.
Not many northern accents apart from the kids. Sounds more like Dublin than Belfast. I expect they couldn't find any Ulster actors as they were mostly loyalists and wouldn't glorify the IRA.
I love this movie...Mason reminds me of being on a long drunk.
