    For blocking. Don't block the person, block his hitting arm. Meaning: Center your body on his hitting arm, not on his body. Also, quick tip for blocking: Both thumbs up and spread your hands when you block. Good luck!

      thanks for the addition! there are so many situations where you can apply that. but also a TON where that concept is a little too simple to get players taking the right space. we go in depth with the different play calls and angles in “Control the Net: The Blocking and Peeling Master Class” It's a part of our Ultimate Defender Series www.betteratbeach.com/ultimatedefender

    Wouldn't it make more sense (at least for me lol.) that the person being served more - usually not the tall blocker , but the smaller defender, play on the side they are more comfortable hitting/receiving at?

    Great info, esp love the idea of Net Protector, for shorties. which i sort of already do on tight sets particularly when offense is known to repetetively dink or drop it short when no ones there. But my partners never i understand why i cheat up. Is Net Protector just for in case oversets or also used when i know if i leave the front open, theyll use.it.?? Cuz U only mention "for oversets" in the vid., but i think u meant both. Clarify? Pd Thanks for including adjustments to game format for short ppl.

  • @kumiokada7216
    @kumiokada7216 3 роки тому +3

    This is great to hear from pro which one to play which side, and why! I pick up different partners for not only pick up games but also tourneys, and I always ask my partner (usually stronger player than me) to take left side for those reasons, sometime partners disagree, but now I have variation from you guys! 😁

    • @Mikkarus
      @Mikkarus Рік тому

      It's a bit more complex I believe. E.g. I'm an average right-handed player and prefer playing on the left side. Sometimes partners ask me to play on the right. And I feel it inconvenient because of 1) different pass direction 2) my set becomes worse due to the other foot should be put forward 3) positioning for attack differs a lot. I really become weaker in almost all aspects on the right - unfortunately I'm not a universal or high-level player. So if you and your partner both are better on the same side - it's not so obvious who to change side. You should consider where your team get or loose scores. E.g. you are bad passing in one position and much better in the other. Or you take most scores by attacks of one player and wish to give him more convenient side. You can even change sides depending on who serves to get maximum profit.

    I never thought too much about the side thing in terms of your actual strengths. I just always happened to like playing on the left, although I'm trying to expand my horizons with the right since I need to work on that in transition anyway.

      I play on the right side, not coz i choose to but every partner i have wants to play on the left.

    Hi Brandon! Another great video! Some of your thoughts were new to me, and they make a lot of sense!
    I want to add something to your question who should play on the left or on the right:
    Which player can cut the ball to the right or left? Not everyone can without a lot of training. In my opinion, that has a lot to do with whether one naturally curls his wrist inside or away when spiking. Everybody has a tendency. Very few people really snap their wrist straight down.
    You and Mark are both wrist away guys. (you even throw a tennis ball with that motion!). For you it should be a lot easier to cut to the right.
    I on the other hand am a wrist inside person, meaning I snap my wrist to the inside when spiking. Thus I can cut easily from right to left.
    What do think? Do you agree?

    • @bighitsfootage
      @bighitsfootage 3 роки тому

      Shooting form isn't the same as a swing, so it shouldn't really have an effect. It probably has to do with where you like to approach the ball from / how you line up for your swing

    • @SteveMcMief
      @SteveMcMief 3 роки тому +1

      @@bighitsfootage no, that's not it.
      And I also disagree. Shooting is like spiking, but then stopping high. I was talking about the wrist that curls over the ball.

    so play the net, for an overset, but if you can't block or it's a bad set, pull line, sounds good.

    • @betteratbeachvolleyball
      @betteratbeachvolleyball  2 роки тому +2

      Pretty much! You definitely want to stay up at the net in case of an overset or if the setter attacks on 2, but then you will decide whether to block or pull based on the set and the type of hitter. We have a TON of information on blocking in our Ultimate Defender Course: www.betteratbeach.com/ultimatedefender. We can show you the right positioning and movement for every type of defense. THEN, we’ll show you when to use different defensive play calls to beat certain types of players.

    I love the fake peels idea. I'm going to try it on a pro player and see if it works at all lol.

  • @Iffy50
    @Iffy50 2 роки тому +1

    I'm a right handed hitter, but I have a goofy foot approach. I hit much better from the weak side. As far as blocking, I think a lot more teams should never block, or block only if the setters are putting the ball very close to the net because they know there will be no blocker. As far as position on serve receive, we usually have angle to the server make the call and it's their middle. (if one hitter is significantly stronger they will usually call and take middle)

  • @celineli7086

    How about if the tall blocker is also the strongest hitter?

    • @Mikkarus
      @Mikkarus Рік тому

      That's obvious. This tall blocker will rarely be a target for serve - to avoid his hard hits. So the smaller player should just choose preferable side for his own attacks. And he will also try to do good passes for second-touch attack for his taller partner - but this sort of attacks never happen out of the court with diagonal steps, so there is no advantage in a specific zone. Look at world-class pairs: right-handed defender (smaller person) usually plays on the left side and attack most of the balls after receiving serve.

  • @jimmybaldbird3853
    @jimmybaldbird3853 3 роки тому

    My partner and I both like blocking. Is it dumb at the higher levels? When it is on my side i take block and the other side him. I dont see it ever, but it works and we move a lot less. We win a lot of games. We both share responsibilities on our half. Is this stupid? When i play with other people they dont like it.

    • @Iffy50
      @Iffy50 2 роки тому

      How do you know what you are going to block? If you always block your side, don't the other teams catch on?

    • @Mikkarus
      @Mikkarus Рік тому

      I believe it will be easily broken on higher level - against teams who can effectively attack from the second touch and from backward sets. You know, people try to play with 3 touches even on beginner level without proper attacks - just to be prepared to the moment their level will allow them to get benefit from it. Same with blocking strategy. It could work very well for you now and quite ok if you are not planning to move to the next league, but if you do - unconventional habits will hit you hard.
