    I'm happy to see you were able to take underwater videos with this cam. I purchased a SJ8 cam and the first time I used it for scuba diving the housing leaked, ruining the cam. I was no deeper than 20 meters. I'll stick to my first generation GoPro which has over 80 dives on it.

    Honestly, that fish at 3:10 looked like it lit a camp fire! But it's not at all uninteresting down there. A terrific variety of animals and plants. And even a seal wearing an aqualung and mask!

    Newt, that was some of the best underwater footage I've seen from you so far. Absolutely amazing stuff, mesmerizing. That cam does
    well with colors at that depth (at least) and pretty good with backlit subjects too.

    • @RalphQuinn
      @RalphQuinn 6 років тому +1

      It's usually shrimp feeding, could possibly be other crustaceans like crabs too. It's an amazing sound when you're down there because it sounds like it's actually in your head because of the speed of sound in water being higher than in air! Like the sound you hear when trying to eat an entire pack of popping candy in one go

    Hey Andrew, great video. We are buying this camera, our first action camera, to bring diving in Cairns in August. Would you recommend different settings for a variable depth dive in Cairns do you know? Any guidance greatly appreciated. It will be August when we come, dives from 5m to 20m deep.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  5 років тому +1

      Good choice. You could try the Underwater white balance setting if you don't have a video, but that will look abnormally red in the shallower water. My preferred setting is to use Cloudy WB, under expose a bit (-0.7EV) and adjust contrast in editing.

    I have now switched to the GoPro Hero 7 Black....My SJCAM SJ8 Pro broke within a couple of months of using it (shut off and wouldn't turn on at all). SJCAM told me to contact the seller which I did who offered to send me a new one...it never arrived. They supposedly sent a second (from Malaysia again) it never arrived again. Then the seller said they would refund me...never happened despite repeated promises. I contacted SJCAM to tell them I wanted to get a replacement and sent them video of the malfunction (like I did to the seller). They erased my help ticket like it never existed...I haven't heard back from them...I'm done with SJCAM...which is sad because I like the SJ7 STAR for cockpit audio when I fly. The only problem I've had with the two SJ7 STAR cameras is that the micro usb port has broken off in both cameras (I superglued a micro usb to usb cable on the second one before it totally broke off so I could keep using it in the plane while charging it at the same time with a USB power supply). The first SJ7 would not record sound after the micro usb port broke (while using the plug in official SJCAM microphone. The GoPro Hero 7 surpasses everything...that's all I'm saying..the only problem is that it's never going to be as cheap as SJCAM. I did all of my video reviewing with the SJ7 and SJ8 but they will be retired soon with GoPro cameras. The hypersmooth technology is what sold me and it is great. I do not have room in the plane to have a gyro.
    UPDATE: They also took down my 2nd help ticket without anything said....DO NOT BUY SJCAM!!!!....or should we call it SCAM and make the J silent?
