@@Nic26482648- Did you watch how he determined what the barrel internal pressure would be when sealed? He was thinking more logically, and more simply, than most might. If they are sealed when cold, they should maintain a little pressure almost always.
Definitely going to have to try this! Just a heads up about filling the barrels with cold dense air - the more air you pack into a barrel the less buoyant it gets. A quick google search on full vs empty scuba tank buoyancy will tell you that the full dense tank sinks and the ‘empty’ tank floats in water because the full tank has more mass, so if you are wanting more buoyancy out of the barrels I believe you’d actually want to seal them while it’s warm out so that the air in them is less dense

Wonderful wish I were a hell of alot younger to make this but as for the sealing of the drums just a thought use plumbers sealing putting makes one hell of a seal. Or even liquid tape will never leek and waterproof.
The problem I have had a hard time getting my head around is the “pointy front” of the pontoons. I like your solution! I also like your McGiver outboard!

Joeblow Johnny Lots of states make it that difficult to make sure it isn’t a stolen boat renamed, or a boat that was demolished/sold as salvage (do not refloat), that someone patched up and wants to put back on the water and sell to someone who doesn’t know any better..... but mostly the stolen boat issue.
I can imagine seeing this on the water with optional flood lights shining down in the water from the underside when you want to look,, and a lidded square hole in the floor. Through it fishing inside a skeeterproof cabin. They say fish like to gather under shade. And fish in the rain, too! Beer in the frig! Bring a big ice chest! It's name would be "The Other Woman!"
Fill them Barrels with expanding foam and you will never sink, And never worry about a punctured toon. Adds no weight to speak of added to all that wood used in construction 😳. Nice toonboat though.
@@chud327 it expands, less then 15 -20 gallons a toon. It expands over twenty times its volume, use the closed cell fast foam formula. Once the reaction starts it really pops off.
@@chud327 It will take approximately 16 pounds of liquid Marine Foam to fill one 55 gallon barrel. Where do yo get 409 gallons? No barrel can be sunk or crushed. Slice open a barrel from end to end and never know it. You can also have smaller barrels attached in a few place throughout the underside, fill those with foam to then hallow out the inside leaving about 2 inches of foam encasing the inside and cut access doors in floor and you have more storage then you can shake a stick at.
Regular foam absorbs water you would need the really expensive waterproof stuff, but a leak on one barrel wouldn't sink it and could be repaired fairly easy!
Very cool and most people these days don't get it... Glad you loved and thanks so much for watching. Hope to start building #3 real soon, I think it will have 2 - 4 barrels also...
I installed valve stems in my caps. Just drill proper size hole Pull the valve stem thru the whole in the cap. Glue the caps back in . Then fill them with air. They float way better.
Hope you used treated wood. Then used lead primer over the wood, then for the finish color you used marine paint. I used to help my late Father-in-law maintain his 35' Owens, an all wood boat. He taught me a lot, the Owens was a flush decked boat just like a PT boat, just shorter and wider with three geared GM 400 cubic inch marine engines with three speed props. She drew 3' of water empty, 4.5 ' fully loaded with fuel and consumables, and was capable of 45 knots full throttle. What a thrill being at the wheel!
@Jim Watson problem was the foam caused alot of metal rot because it holds water against the steel due to it being open cell foam I've had to repair countless military vehicles that had been patched with spray insulating foam which tripled the rate of rot
Me and my daughters built one of these last year, took it out dozens of times on the pueblo reservoir in Colorado, plan on doing it again next summer way to much fun
Nice project. You know those open gaps between your barbells will cause a tremendous drag Your diverters are good but you should cut strips of barell to wrap those gaps.
If you fill those drums with that two part foam mix stuff you can get even more buoyancy and no risk of leaking..just a thought..the only bad thing is all that plywood wood around water it won’t last long I would have added some sheet metal for added strength or expanded metal
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I believe the buoyancy wouldn't increase as that is an effect of displacement. But the barrels couldn't leak if filled with foam, that would be correct. Also it is pressure treated plywood.
I'm goin to do this. I have alot of those barrels lying around. Maybe put some astroturf on that deck for some grip. This video has given me alot of ideas. Props to u sir.... pun intended. Lol

Sure brings back memories as a youngin , Ma god rest her soul her side of the family consisted of inlaws & outlaws end of fall early winter The whole clan would gather there was usually a 3-4 day hunting trip I think that was the men getting away from the wives an kids 🤣 , an then the next 4-5 days everything was cleaned , processed , some of it cooked / smoked , one downside there was only bathroom in the old house but thankfully we still had a old old outhouse. My Ole Man was a mullet fisherman by trade so there was tons of fish that had to be cleaned along with gulf lobster , Grouper , turtles , Couple deer , 3-4 wild hogs , couple Gators , wild turkeys , I can't tell you how many dozens of squirrels but a bunch 🙄 , we also raised chickens an rabbits so like 25-30 of them would be cooked up , also raised pigs so 3- 4 of them would be culled + them razor back boars , several goats , He had a huge wood smoker man those smoked mullet was the best , there would be one wild boar that was pit cooked , Swamp Cabbage , the women folk cooked non stop for days cracking cornbread, pork skins , pork brains & eggs , hog head cheese ( not that nasty store bought stuff 😖) they also canned up all kinds of vegetables an made jam & jelly's as we had a bunch of different fruit trees , an nut trees . At the end every one had a car trunk load of meat & canned goods to take home . The old folks that lived thru the Great Depression always looked forward to their manatee steaks as a kid it must have been an a acquired taste 😝. It was rare we ever bought meat from the grocer , an the stuff we did buy normal staples we had a tab an The Ole Man usually bartered the biggest part of that off with fresh seafood
@@RussMeister70 , Of course now days it's illegal to harvest them . But I recall it being said that you could get 2 different types of meat from one , The underside ( belly area ) was akin to pork while the upper portion of the back had a more beef texture. Its also claimed by many that Large Snapping Turtles have 7 different types of meat on it .

Time will tell, but in the meantime thank you for a design the average every day guy can build in his driveway - as long as it doesn't piss-off your HOA.
I sure hope you build one and it works great for you. Yes, it can be done right in the driveway. Maybe you can get a doctor's note for the HOA... thanks for watching.
I love it! I’m wondering about longevity, I’m thinking of building one much in the same way but I want to build a railing all the way round with seating. My concern is if the plywood decking needs replaced I would have to remove the railing and the seating.
I'm building my own home a pontoon boat. I need to know how long are your barrels? My barrels worth 34 in a 1/2 inches long. where did you get the Springs from? And if you're barrels are 16 and a 1/2 inches apart does that mean the plywood sits right on top of them?
Sorry it took so long to reply… my barrels are around 36 inches, the springs are from an old trampoline, I don’t leave a space, but there is a frame the plywood sits on . Thanks for watching
Or drill a half inch hole near the holes. So you can feed a valve stem through it. Thats how i make my own two liters for fun shooting. I drill through the 2 liter cap.
Great design, but you should go 1 more! Make a 30' to 35' pontoon boat, and put a cabin on it. Use aluminum studs to keep it light weight with 1/4" plywood for sheathing!
An appropriately sized one absolutely each barrel can support 455 lbs or so before submerging so really you'd olny want to have each barrel responsible for like 200 lbs for safety and stability
Can you give more details about the materials: Where'd you get the barrels? are used barrels ok? Did you use treated wood? Did you finish the bottom wood too? Did you build the trailer? What was the total cost to make this?
I used all treaded wood. 2X4's, 2X6;s, treated plywood, deck screws, plumber strap, and waterproof glue. I found the barrels on facebook marketplace. I found the trailer on facebook marketplace too, for only $200. $350 for the boat, $200 on trailer, and I build one of the engines for $90. The trolling motor was free... My father stating in 1970/74 would get us 10 steel barrels (no plastic back then) and enough 2x4 and 2x6 so my brother and I and friends would build a ski platform following fathers written instructions ... We would go to the junkyard and get an old rear end as an anchor ... Then call our friend and pick it up and walk it to the beach, using it all summer as ski/swimming platform ... Great times living the simple life in Coden AL ...
Very cool and thanks for watching!
Just wanted to say, I've truly enjoyed all of your boat videos. You have the best kind of DIY spirit, and I really enjoy how you involve your family. You know how to have fun and enjoy life. Keep on truckin!
Thanks so much, I sure do try. Thanks for watching.
Cool boat , very relaxed, simplicity at its finest 🙏😊
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!!!
Wonderful wish I were a hell of alot younger to make this but as for the sealing of the drums just a thought use plumbers sealing putting makes one hell of a seal. Or even liquid tape will never leek and waterproof.
same idea with u.
Drums are already sealed with the bungs. They store liquid. no sealant needed.

The problem I have had a hard time getting my head around is the “pointy front” of the pontoons. I like your solution!
I also like your McGiver outboard!
Thanks so much on both!! I hope to build number 3 real soon, I hope you will be checking that out. thanks for watching.
Hi , can you explain the procedure the state require in steps in order to get your REGISTRATION for your home built boat ? Thanks
I just went to the DMV and said homemade boat, they gave me two forms to fill and and it took about 30 minutes and $32.25. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@chud327 wow ....wish my LOUISIANA state was that easy ! Lmao ! Have to furnished all verifiable receipt with only new purchase in materials ! Have to have craft inspected ! If you made it through this far successfully then you filled out a REGISTRATION form and paid the state tax of that receipt value before they issued hull I'd # to be mail to you ! ......YOUR state is easy ! ..... what state is that ? I'm moving there ! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

Lots of states make it that difficult to make sure it isn’t a stolen boat renamed, or a boat that was demolished/sold as salvage (do not refloat), that someone patched up and wants to put back on the water and sell to someone who doesn’t know any better..... but mostly the stolen boat issue.
Lovely DIY boat project. Greetings from sunny Jamaica.
Me too and thanks for watching in Jamaica!
Man, I really enjoyed following this series. Genius! Love DIYers!
Totally agree!
I love the idea of the flood lights and fishing with out skeeters and in the rain. Maybe that will be on boat build #3. Thanks for watching.
Fill them Barrels with expanding foam and you will never sink, And never worry about a punctured toon. Adds no weight to speak of added to all that wood used in construction 😳. Nice toonboat though.
Thanks so much. I would be concerned about the price of 409 gallons of foam. Thanks for watching
@@TentFever You could fill them with empty plastic soda bottles, probably for free.
Regular foam absorbs water you would need the really expensive waterproof stuff, but a leak on one barrel wouldn't sink it and could be repaired fairly easy!
Fast with two four barrels . I caught that . loved it .
That's a good idea
Um barco ⛵ muito original
Hope you used treated wood. Then used lead primer over the wood, then for the finish color you used marine paint. I used to help my late Father-in-law maintain his 35' Owens, an all wood boat. He taught me a lot, the Owens was a flush decked boat just like a PT boat, just shorter and wider with three geared GM 400 cubic inch marine engines with three speed props. She drew 3' of water empty, 4.5 ' fully loaded with fuel and consumables, and was capable of 45 knots full throttle. What a thrill being at the wheel!
You could also use a few tire valve stems to positively pressurize the barrels and if needed adjust on the fly
Would insulation foam work, filling barrels ?
@@VagoniusThicket not insulating foam it's a semi open cell foam and absorbs water... use closed cell marine floatation foam it will not absorb water
@Jim Watson problem was the foam caused alot of metal rot because it holds water against the steel due to it being open cell foam I've had to repair countless military vehicles that had been patched with spray insulating foam which tripled the rate of rot
@Jim Watson it doesn't matter if it's steel or stainless steel anything that holds moisture shouldn't be kept in constant contact with it
Hmm that's a good idea
Me and my daughters built one of these last year, took it out dozens of times on the pueblo reservoir in Colorado, plan on doing it again next summer way to much fun
So cool to hear, I hope to build my third for this summer. Thanks for watching!!
Woohoo, finally you're back with another pontoon boat!! Have been waiting ages for this. Happy sailing/cruising.
Thanks so much and I have been waiting for this one too. thanks for watching.
Me too! Glad to see you again
@@brettm1118 Thanks, I love hearing that!!!
Nice project. You know those open gaps between your barbells will cause a tremendous drag Your diverters are good but you should cut strips of barell to wrap those gaps.
I have seen the barrel strips covering the joints. That might be on build #3, we will see. Thanks for watching!!
I saw one in Jacksonville back in 1985 and it hasn't left my mind yet!
That is so cool and thanks for watching.
Pure genius!! I really like your ‘just do it’ style. Thanks. Keep up your good work!!

Nice boat mister.... i wonder how nature and wildlife protected and care so well at your country even arround settlement
You are country as country could be. I live in Pinellas so you now I'm from Florida, right on brother.
I'll say it again your country is cool 😎
A manatee steak? Can you explain how to get a mantee steak plz. I'm serious. Dm me if needed
@@RussMeister70 ,
Of course now days it's illegal to harvest them . But I recall it being said that you could get 2 different types of meat from one , The underside ( belly area ) was akin to pork while the upper portion of the back had a more beef texture.
Its also claimed by many that Large Snapping Turtles have 7 different types of meat on it .

I do recall a Family of Martin's that lived in the Palm Harbor area, I think ( not for certain ) they may have been related to the John's Families in the area.

@@chud327 your welcome. I dropped a sub. I'll keep watching. Btw. The plastic ones I used in 1992 are still working fine. It went from my home to a hu ting camp in the swamp. I think I have replaced 1 due to a gator. Just a hand pump and tire gauge.

Super cool. Looking forward to more on this.
Thanks for sharing.
Love that and thanks for watching! Sorry it took so long to reply…
from a guy who has built a lot of stuff, instead of the straps i would have used 1/4" aircraft cable and stainless turnbuckles. you could always go back and check tension and re-tighten them. i would worry about those straps work hardening and snapping..
1/4 inch ss cable with turnbuckles would be the bomb. It would take a bite out of the budget get stainless steel cable and 16 turnbuckles, but it would be cool. Maybe someday and thanks for watching.
Good idea filling with cool air. Might be able to throw a few ice cubes in it and let it melt a little and seal it off. The water won’t effect it much I don’t think.
I have seen people drop a little dry ice. It does the job and leaves no water inside. thanks for watching.
Out of all the videos I have seen, yours is by far the best, if it's ok, I will try to make it like you did, very nice pontoon Sir
Wow! Awesome comment and did you ever make one? Sorry it took so long to reply!
the mad scientist is loose and at it again...a little welding spark, a cloud of sawdust and presto...a pontoon. really kool man, bet you,ve watched the Munsters "DRAGULA" episode 100 times...but cant imagine all the goodies you'll eventually add and just love how the trailer was utilized for jig and templates. not a bunch a boring time measuring, just start throwin that mother together. although it looks great, maybe some automotive adhesion promoter for camo-painted barrels for a true "swamper"...and since it has two 4 barrels, the "dual-quad" wouldnt be a bad name nolol..."DQ" for short haha...kutgw son...and cairy oan.
Dual quad would have been a great name! Love the comment and thanks for watching
I wish you had thought to seal the underneath side of the deck, I don't know if it mattered but I would guess that it could get water splashed up under it. How well has held up for you? It looks like it turned out nice. Thanks

Wild bit of kit you built there! I love it especially those outboard motors that look like you’ve stolen the lawn mower motor

Looks hell of a lot sturdy than my friends pontoon boat. A wave hit the front siding a crushed it like a can. 😂. Their junk. Good build.

What would happen if you installed a tire valve into the barrels and put like 20 psi in there?
I would worry they would leak or get hit by something… otherwise would be a good idea. Thanks for watching
I like those springs holding the barrels!
Jut in time to help me decide on a safe, stable platform for fishing off of since I've been having problems with my balance due to Neuropathy from my type II diabetes and your boat was THE answer to that problem - Thank you.
Excellent video on how to build one by the way, especially since I just happen to have the tools needed to do it with.
The doctors say less drinking may help, but my medications did mention that my pills may be affected or enhanced by alcohol and I did not know if that was a suggestion or a warning. Ha, Ha.
I admire your thinking. Thank you
Thanks so much and thanks for watching
I love it! I’m wondering about longevity, I’m thinking of building one much in the same way but I want to build a railing all the way round with seating. My concern is if the plywood decking needs replaced I would have to remove the railing and the seating.
I screwed everything down which would make it fairly easy to replace the plywood. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Mine is still holding up good a year later….
Fiberglass the deck. It works👍
Great job, looking into adding a half pontoon in the middle of my boat more to the stern as it sinks here.
These are great ideas for that application.

If you have a local insulation company, ask price get them filled, with closed cell foam, then its unsinkable
Good evening Chud and everyone ! What a great job on the pontoon boat, thanks for sharing your video !

Looks heavy but floats great, love the wide open deck
Me too, much more comfortable than my Jon boat. Thanks for watching
I'd add a 3/4 in fender washer on top of the springs, as well as the staples. Seems a bit more solid?!
That is a good idea, it is about time for me to go under an put a shot of grease on mine. Thanks for the tip and for watching.
@@chud327 side thought : varnish/seal the underside of the deck?
Badass rig, btw!
Ya got my wheels spinnin!
Great build, what was your total cost?
Im sure it's a lot more today. If I knew a year ago what I know now, I would have stocked up on a ton of lumber.
@@Fried-Pig-Nipples I know right! A good thing to do is repurpose pallets, but there is so much you can do with that
If you still have issues with barrels collapsing you could try putting a very small amount of dry ice in then seal it.

Pontoon with a cabin would be so great and thanks for watching.
I have 28 ft ..1962 airstream trailer..you think it could be placed on a. Boat like this?
Good luck and thanks for watching.
Totally awesome.... coolest DIY boat I've seen. Good luck with it!
