It can't be understated how much it helps having all of these names of houses and their important people, and where they were geographically, contextualized visually on a map while they're being explained. The times when I read the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc. it was like slashing my way through a jungle of names, relationships and places too difficult to comprehend well enough to picture.
Sindarin Elves on discovering the petty Dwarves: "Arrgh, hideous creatures, kill them with arrows even though they're too disgusting to eat!" Noldorin Elves on discovering Men: "Awww, cute animals, let's make pets out of them, take them home and teach them tricks!" Eru Iluvatar facepalming: "I thought I gave you Firstborn Children more intelligence than this..."
Yeah I've been a Tolkien devotee since junior-high days (late '60s, when I read LotR end to end a dozen times, appendices and all), and from the start I've had rather qualified appreciation for the Elves. Sure they have some wonderful qualities and talents and all, but in a lot of ways they're as much a hot mess as we humans/Men are. 😄
"This is the only romantic elven union where the man is an elf, and the women is a man" that cracks me up trying to re read that. Another top quality video! Your work is so thorough
Haleth is one of my favorites....I'm just saying, Tolkien loved strong, independent, intelligent, women, this is no secret. Thanks Mellon! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
i havent read most of Tolkien's books but listening to to you speak about them is absolutely thrilling! I truely appreciate this channel. especially since Amazon is desperately trying to ruin Tolkien's works Thank You
I have read much of the legendarium and listened to hours of collegiate level lectures and you still suprise me with information I have never heard or picked up on. Bravo!
Yet another amazing video - 40 minutes long and I wasn't bored for a second. You should know that this is not just because of Tolkien, but because of the wonderful storytelling nature of your voice 🙂
Oh man, I've been sick for the past few days and get emotional more easily. Basically started tearing up when you compared Hador to a dog and how Fingolfin loved him and knew he'd lose him someday. Just tears. Beautifully put.
I have watched your whole series. I would like to tell you how impressed I am with your knowledge and the intelligence of your various inputs. I am unable to fathom why you don’t have a few extra zeros on your subscriber count and views.
Ah, enjoyed this one. Very interesting idea that Sauron would be the one to sow distrust among the Edain, I had previously thought it was a bribed human, but yeah, seems like a shapeshifter was involved
I’ve been listening to your channel for 4 hours straight on a long drive. Again, the way you tell the story is in the spirit of the storytellers of yore and so rich in character and drama. It’s given me ideas for my own channel and I look forward to both more videos and your book you are working on.
Fingolfin and Finrod are the greatest elves imo. I really wish Fingolfin would have been there with Beren and Finrod when they were captured by Sauron. I have a feeling Sauron would have gotten smoked and Finrod would have lived to join the Fellowship later in the 3rd age!
Finrod was too pure of a soul, he wasn't allowed to grow older because would have grandfather paradoxed the whole story out of existence purely because of of his immaculate vibes.
Thingol gets the short-shrift in every Tolkien video I have ever seen. He is one of the first 3 sentient beings to ever exist, he was one of 3 liviong beings beings who first saw the bliss of Valinor, and he was the only being ever to forsake etenral bliss for the sake of love. Pretty bad-ass himself if you ask me and definitely deserving of all the respect he ever demanded. Forget the race of men, he was one of the few people who had the right to say to the likes of FIngon, "You an't seen nothing kid!".
“How do ye of uncouth race dare to demand aught of me, Elu Thingol, Lord of Beleriand, whose life began by the waters of Cuivénen years uncounted ere the fathers of the stunted people awoke?” Based last words
@@johns1625i don’t think Elwe was one of the first Elves to awaken because he technically had two brothers - which indicates to me that they must’ve had parents. Perhaps their parents were among the first.
I got nothing to say that hasn't been mentioned by others other than that out of the many amazing Tolkien related youtube channels, this one is without a doubt the best one.
I stumbled on this amazing channel a few weeks ago and have been watching the videos at every free moment. The knowledge, the enthusiasm, the love for Prof Tolkien’s work is very moving. Thank you for hours of joy and wonder.
Andreth made it to 94! She got that little bit closer to the Eldar... Andreth and Aegnor are meant to be, but not in Arda Marred. In Arda remade Finrod and Aegnor will find her.
You could see the sons of Finarfin as Finrod being the nice brother, Angrod being the catty brother, (will be nice to your face but bitch about you behind your back and has alot of influence) and Aegnor as the quiet, intimidating, military disciplined, bite is worse than his bark type of brother. No wonder Celeborn had to keep a low profile when marrying their sister. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The people of Haleth are called "haladin" because that is their word for "warden": which is presumably what they call themselves after settling in Brethil.
I’ve never watched LOTR but always wanted to, and stumbled across your channel by chance, just wanted to say loving all of them man they’re all so amazing keep making this amazing content!
Holy Moly! I was watching the vid and just thinking about if a Male elf has ever married a human female and BAM, you started talking about it. Youre some kind of wizard arent you.
Fantastic content. Im really impressed with your depth of knowledge of Tolkein's legendarium and your delivery is perfect. The more I hear the more im convinced that Tolkein created the greatest story in our known history.
Thanks! I'm so hooked on the Tolkien Mythology, thanks to the way you tell these stories. I'm not rich, but will be happy to send you some appreciation as I go thru your videos. Thank you!! I'm so grateful. You rock! Have you considered a Patreon subscription?
"Unlike elves, no one knows where humans go after death". I wonder why they don't appreciate the gift of Eru and why it wasn't hard for Morgoth to turn them into rebels. :-) He must have said "Oh [sad face], poor you, it must be sooooo hard to appreciate a gift if you don't know what you'll get after unwrapping it [tears in his eyes]. On the other hand, if you like surprises, it's good... I guess..."
That's so funny, but Idt they would've have known it was a gift until being told by Finrod or other elves. They wouldn't have even known about elves. I think may have been more "doesn't it suck to get sick, old and die? There's a whole continent of others more loved living their best immortal lives in bliss" that'll get people easy anyday
Second that. Boudicca was one of the most amazing persons in history. She and her people accomplished an amazing smackdown on the arrogance of Rome (for a while, at least), which was stunned at the defeats they received at the hand of a "mere woman".
I always wondered why so many Noldor and men of the House of Hador lived in Hithlum and it's surrounding lands, I mean it sounds like it was cold and the land wasn't very fertal, yet the House of Hador and the Noldor who live by them seem to be one of if not the most powerful faction of the free people's of Beleriand. Galadriel was not of pure noldor blood. Her grandmother is Indis a Vanyar princess. Her mother is a princess of the Teleri. That makes her 50% noldor 25% vanyar and 25% teleri. So she may not be bound to noldor customs. AND Celeborn was Sindar. He definitely doesn't abide by Noldor customs
Umm… 50% Teleri from her mother, 25% Noldor and 25% Vanyar from her father. And her maternal great-uncle was Elu Thingol who was Sindar. She was a Noldor princess whose ancestry was mostly not Noldorian so you might be right that she didn’t follow all of their customs, especially with her spending so much time in Doriath and marrying Sindarin Celeborn.
"He always has something to say and as per usual he doesn't say the nicest thing". Thingol is so extra, all the time. 😆 Explains so much of Thranduil's behavior (with all his Doriath-envy issues...)

Loving your channel more and more! I'm new to your channel, however, I've been into Tolkien since 1981. However, I haven't been able to read anything by Tolkien other than The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion (although I read it twice, back who knows when). In what book can I read more about Andreth and the elves? I tried about 40 years ago, to read his Unfinished Tales, though they were incomplete according to Christopher Tolkien, but after that, I know more books on unfinished tales have been published. Where might I read about Andreth and Finrod Felagund, please? I'd love to know.... Fun fact, since 1981, every autumn (or fall as we Americans say -- and I'm 1/2 Spanish and 1/2 American -- I read Tolkien only in English) I used to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every fall for 20-30 years, until I saw that I had to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings separately, as every time I read all 4 books one after the other, an old relative would die. I know this is superstition but I, about to turn 60, only have one old relative left and I want her to stay alive. So when I read or watch The Hobbit, I take some time before reading or watching The Lord of the Rings, and I'm warming up with your videos before starting to read The Silmarillion once more. So where, my Rainbow David, can I read about this story? If there are any typos, it's because I've been trying to train my Spanish mobile spellcheck into being bilingual, but it's a tough task.... Thank you, my dear Tolkien enthusiast and Melon! By the way, I'm an English linguist, snd also a philologist, which is why I love Tolkien and language. Sadly, I didn't specialize in the same dead languages he did. I was only offered Old English (reason why I recognized it immediately in Rohirrim names), but that was it.

I always found it a weird worldbuilding detail that there’s 13:00 “an eleven custom that the Noldor only marry during times of peace”. Cool idea but doesn’t work. Why would the Noldor have that custom? This is the first and only war they have ever been apart of.
