I was always under the impression that jonins were distinguished ninjas of high skill and you cannot promote a chunin based on some test. Such a title can only be earned through exceptional performance on real high stakes missions.
Jonin rank is earned from a good mission resume. I’m sure a chub in that has proven themselves and done many high lv missions become Jonin Look at Neji: within 3 years, he jumped to Jonin
The other thing that people often forget about is Tokubetsu Jōnin or "special Jonin." These are ninja who, rather than having all-around jōnin skills, only excel in a specific area. The two examples are Ebisu for being able to tutor young ninja, and Ibiki Morino who is Jonin level through interrogation & torture only. There are more example of these characters, but those two are the confirm best examples in the manga. So, I believe a Jonin is an elite ninja that is very skilled in many different area's and they are probably capable of handling A rank missions on a regular basis. They should also be mentally mature enough to mentor a group of Genin.
@@spit-fire no he’s a regular jonin , he was a special case in getting accepted into the academy as a kid because ykno bad at ninjutsu, bad taijutsu etc .
I thought you would mention inconsistency at Jonin level. My issue is that Jonin are made jobbers to boost the perceived power of lower level ninja too often. I'll never understand how the Sound 4 escape Konaha when they are surrounded by Anbu agents only to fall to genin a few chapters later.
1. Sound 4 as a team are Jonin level, but as individuals, they are weaker 2. They were drained from the mission prior 3. All but one of their fights ended up being unfair. Shikamaru and Kiba's 1v1 turned into a 2v1, and Choji had a haxx pill that multiplied his strength 100x. The one fair fight almost ended with the death of Neji, and he only survived due to some insane medical ninjutsu.
Kidomaru caught the Anbu in his spider net, that’s how they escaped The Sound 4 at base are at least chunin in lv but in curse mark lv 2, as we saw as a team, they took out two Leaf Jonin. Personally, they needed to go curse mark 2 to survive that encounter
I always figured Jonin was based on skills and accomplishments. I figured it was not just combat based. You could be a sensor, a healer, a sabator, or a highly specialized ninja, not just a combat based ninja.
You know what I think. A good idea for a Jonin exam would be to tie it in with the chunin exam, specifically the forest of death portion. It would pair up a genin squad with a random chunin from their village to complete the task. It would test the leadership skills necessary for a jonin and the adaptability skills of genin necessary for a chunin. I would thin that would be pretty interesting.
Likewise another misconception is that Genin are barely ninja. They are at best your everyday cop. They aren’t meant to fight. Like at times we see in the series, they are meant to help everyday citizens, maybe at best they work as bodyguards for low level goverment people. The way I always saw it was that Chuunin were by far the foot soldiers of the Narutoverse. Thats why the Chuunin exams are so important, because its a totally different line of work. Sure some Chuunin go become instructors but a lot of them are just soldiers. I don’t really think a Jounin exam would even be needed. Ninja of that skill are so rare that I believe the inuniverse explanation that the rank is personally awarded by the Kage who recognize the individual shinobi. If anything maybe the same board of people who manage missions and oversee operations have some people who keep an eyeout for jounin candidates and maybe forward them to the Kage for evaluation. But a big exams type thing? Nah.
And the chunin exams were made by the 2nd hokage to be sure inexperienced ninja weren't being killed on the battlefields like his younger brother.... it's really not that deep lol you don't need to show your skills past being able to hold your own in battle, so after the 4th war especially Naruto would easily skip ranks
Yeah and with the selection rates for chunin it would probably be 500 in total of that rank or above and of the 500 i could see less than 100 being jonin.
Ninja's are not just Foot soldiers they're spies they can be important to the economy because they help the goverment in confrences and many more things and there really important for the economy
The Chuunin exams aren't just for the villages to show off. It's a way to give Genin a taste of real, serious combat in at least a semi-structured and refereed environment to make sure they're ready for it before you send them out on more dangerous missions or in some cases, war. The vast majority of Genin do not go on missions like that. Team 7 only did because they were lied to about the difficulty of the mission and the Sasuke Retrieval Team were sent out of desperation.
Shikamaru was the only one promoted cause of his battle sense lol. Everyone was just competitive which isn't exactly the purpose to become a full soldier. Everything is sorta designed to not make you die in the actual battle field. In the eyes of the village, Shikamaru earned the title to handle himself and his own appointed taskforce to retrieve Sasuke. Even though arguably Shikamaru isn't the best fighter per se
If Genin weren't sent to retrieve Sasuke, how would generic Jonin do by comparison? And how many known Jonin would need to be sent, and how would they do?
@@morphingninja We actually have a fairly good idea of this. Because the Sound 4 fought two fodder Jonin (special Jonin in the anime, meaning they have Jonin level skills in only one area). The Sound 4 had to gang up on them, go all out and even use their second stage curse marks and even then they only just barely won, were exhausted and needed to rest for a while afterward. Keeping in mind, these 2 fodder Jonin went into the fight exhausted and out of chakra. So if they had gone into it well rested, they would have won. So your answer is 2.
It seems like Jonin are personally promoted from Chunin - Neji and Naruto were both examples of this - Tsunade promoted Neji and Kakashi promoted Naruto (albeit after his education)
@@alexzero3736 when you’re a jonin you don’t have to have a squad. There are other jonin such as choza, shikaku, ebiki, etc who are jonin without a squad.
@@alexzero3736 there's a reason why team 7 calls kakashi "sensei" it literally means teacher. in order to teach a group of genin you need to be a jonin, but not all jonins are gonna teach a group of genin. anko doesn't have her own team and she's still a very skilled jonin, whether or not you lead a team of kids doesn't determine if you're a jonin or not
Honestly it’s probably just that if you’re ready to be jounin, the kage/elders know who you are and will promote you. Like a corporate promotion - early levels are more standardized, but high levels come down to reputation and contacts
The only reason they had the chunin exams was because tobirama wanted to make sure children didn’t uselessly die in battle so they had to pass an exam to make sure they can handle themselves in battle(yes I know it’s a bit ironic since a lot of them die in the exam)
We saw the most dangerous chunin exam, whit Orochima and the sand village. And barely anyone died, people dying probably happens, but its not nearly as common as throwing kids in battle .
I'm surprised you didn't mention Neji who not only was the only Jounin at the start of Shippuden from the Leaf Genin but was double promoted. He was always strong enough to be Chunin but his anger and stuff held him back but because of his skill, intellectual capacity, wisdom, and prowess plus judgment (he took it upon themselves him and his team) to save the Kazekage Gaara. He was double promoted. Chunin is about showing promise and skill which is why Shikamaru became the only Chunin, but Jounin is the full package of intelligence, wisdom, judgment, leadership, and fighting prowess at a high level. That's why Neji got it. But there are Jounin...special Jounin that excel in one area so extensively they were made Jounin cause their skills in that area are unmatched, like Ibiki.
I can't remember what episode it was but it was mentioned haphazardly that the kage has the power to promote a ninja to jonin rank as long as they're. accomplished enough Also, winning the chunin exam tourney does not necessarily equate to being the only way to get promoted to chunin. Shikamaru lost by forfeiting his match against temari but was still recommended to the kage and konoha council to be promoted to chunin because of the tactical thinking, composure under pressure and rational decision making he showed. I believe the jonin selection process is very similar but instead of a semi-controlled environment like an exam, the villages use ninja missions to sift through their chunin to find ninja with the qualities and accomplishments worthy of being given the title of jonin, the ninja is then recommended to the kage and the village council which thus finally decide if the ninja does qualify for the promotion.
It's also likely because there's so many genin that want to promote to Chunin (which is why there's so many chunin) instead of having the kage constantly monitoring the genins and their progress, the chunin exams are probably a good way to gauge the best ones in a quick manner. And then for ranking up to Jonin, it's usually gonna be the chunin who make a name for themselves for being especially skilled.
A Jonin Exam after the timeskip would have been an amazing idea to develop all the side characters and show how far they progressed. It would have been way better than them doing nothing for the entirety of Shippuden. That's why i felt nothing for Neji's death... Cuz by the time he died he had basically disappeared from the story and become fodder.
Disagree. Would've wasted time. HOWEVER, we definitely could've made room for side characters to show their growth in other ways. Have one team per arc similar to Shikamaru's team in the Hidan and Kakuzu arc.
It could have been better filler than some of the rest. I do have to ask where the community sits with Ninja Ostrich? Given anime communities, it's either a 'god tier' filler character or the worst thing to happen to filler. There is no in between.
Yeah my head canon is that they get promoted based on accomplishments Like even excluding characters like Kakashi, characters like Asuma completed hundreds of missions a good chunk of those being A and S ranks So I think once you've reached a certain level like maybe 6 A ranks and a S rank you might have to be promoted as it just proves how strong and reliable you are With Naruto he never officially got the chunin promotion so his maturity intelligence and knowledge was always a question mark because based on his accomplishments beating Kakuzu by itself could have earned him jonin imo Plus I forget if it was just an anime scene but Temari told Shikamaru to go for Jonin at the start of Shippuden so there might be another element like a request or something
I think Tsunade once said that having Naruto as a gennin makes him legally tied to Kakashi and as Naruto has a good relationship with Kakashi it was good cause Naruto is a special case he's a jinchuuriki and must be kept under survelliance, also he as a genin must be legally within a ninja unit under a jounin and Kakashi is reliable to protect him against Akatsuki as well as having Sakura, Naruto's companion and Tsunade's apprentice, within the unit as well. Also it'd look bad if someone within the leaf, like Danzo, targets a genin, even if it's the jinchuuriki, as well as blocking Naruto from legally be able to take on A and S rank missions on his own volition, because Tsunade knows his attitude, if he's given the opportunity, even when he was little, he'd definitely like to take on a rank SSSSS mission. So mantaining him a genin legally blocks him from taking dangerous missions on his own, only with special permission from her he could take B+ rank missions. Sure if Naruto passed his chunin exam before there's nothing to be done, but mantaining him as a genin was more of a political thing, if Naruto was chunin or higher then he would be able to take harder missions on his own, perhaps one day Tsunade slips and misses Naruto entirely and when she notices, he already left to X place to fulfill a dangerous mission, it could be already too late if out of nowhere she gets intel that Akatsuki or other strong opponent is there, even sending reinforcements might not be useful. But as a genin, only she can give a direct dangerous mission to him, thus controlling where he is and the possible dangers he might encounter, sending him only if it's necessary, and of course coordinating perhaps with Jiraiya, letting him know where Naruto is outside Konoha in case Akatsuki shows up and all of that
I remember watching in the anime about the Jonin exam, they even stated that you needed to excel in two different chackra elemental natures as part of the drill.
I think that Dragon Ball is one of the only shonen series that can pull off multiple goated Tournament arcs. Although, after the origional Dragon Ball they kind of fell off and just felt like he wins because he's stronger. But before that, it was all about technique.
The tournament arcs were also masterfully used as benchmarks. Goku lost to Roshi in the first one. Goku brought Tenshinhan to the brink but lost by a hair, showing he surpassed his previous self. The third one, while Goku intentionally handicapped himself against Piccolo Junior, he won against Tenshinhan fair and square, showcasing his growth. The Tournament of Power was not a standard tournament, but Goku wasn't even the final winner. He had to team up with Freeza and the two of them sacrificed their spots to win so that 17 could
A jonin exam is unnecessary. I always assumed Jonin are just exceptional ninjas that are promoted by a board consisting of the kage and advisors as well as exceptional jonin
Perhaps the missions given are the test. After completing enough B-rank missions, a Chunin is given the option to take an A-rank mission. If he succeeds, he is promoted to Jonin.
A jonin exam would prolly be village specific. And it would prolly include mostly critical/extreme stress thinking like a written exam and then practice battle scenarios? But each village would definitely keep it within the village.
If there is an exam I think it would be a simple test to see if they are capable. Not a tournament but perhaps a test like a high ranking proxy mission
10:15 there would be that many children at the age of Naruto and sasuke as there were 2 mass calamities for the kids as naruto's birth would have reduced birth rate for that year and maybe a few more years and uchiha clan assassination would also have reduced a few kids and also have discouraged parents to send their kids into academy
I think the chunin exams is like the ninja Olympics sure you can just become a chunin from normal means like missions and stuff but the chunin exams shows whose gonna be the big deals of the next generation
From what I recall the starting reasons for the chuunin exams where die to diplomacy, to show the other nations what your youth is doing, over time this became what was shown in the series with showing off to attract customers and such. This tells that the nations did previously promote their own people based on their own values instead of having a public tournament, also there seems to be a lot of civilians who want to watch it great way to gather funds, less people complaining about taxes, so basically a millitary demonstration where they show of their weapons (tanks drive and shoot, planes fly over head ect) and this is in line with what we learn in the hidden mist arc, ninja are viewed as simple tools/weapons with no feelings, these genin are just tools that are being shown off, also in the 1 v 1 rounds the reff states they will intervene as to not let someone die, the best of the tools/weapons that would be shown of at the final stage, can't let the merchandise drop dead before the big show.
One thing I wondered, did Kakashi sign his team up for the Chuunin exams because he really thought they had a shot at passing, or more because he thought it would be a good learning experience?
I think both. Naruto and Sasuke had already shown that they chunin level. In all honesty Sasuke was probably chunin level before he even left the academy as shown by how Kakashi was impressed with him during the bell test and then later how he takes on chunin at the same time during the land of waves mission. Naruto is also able to hold his own against jonin in the land of waves mission. Sakura is the only one who clearly wasn't ready.
Wasn't the Land of waves mission actually an A rank mission? They completed a jonin mission as genin. Pretty sure Kakashi knew the chunin exams were gonna be a piece of cake for them
@@chrisblanc663 exactly. If two genin almost fresh out of the academy (except gai's team bc they were stated to have skipped the exams one year to build up strength) so if two people eligible to be the arguably highest honor below hokage would hold anything back and use non lethal attacks? Nah, they'd be absolutely bloodlusted. Someone would get hurt more than Lee did, no cap
I guess Jonin is a case by case promotion. Some one that has exceptional talent or accolades as a Chunin gets pulled over to the side in a more private matter and is promoted. Either by successfully leading a Squad that lead to critical success or benefit to the village, or has a high success rate in missions at and above their pay grade.
We were indicated why when naruto was going through becoming jonin. Correct me if im wrong, but the difference between chuunin and jonin is smaller than the difference between chuunin and genin. Chuunin dont need to be tested in such a grandiose way like the chuunin exams to be promoted to jonin, its something you attain when your knowledge and experience warrant that promotion. I think there is tests to become jonin but again the difference to become a jonin is merely knowledge so its prob just a straight written test
If there were a jounin exam, I think it would be like the test that Mizuki and Iruka went together. Tower that is heavily surveilanced and booby trapped, by finishing several those types of challenges higher ups decide if they can rank to jounin or not. Was it filler arc? But it gave me an idea that chuunins every now and then get a chance to take on something that might earn rank of jounin. I recall it was scroll fetch in dangerous booby trapped tower. The way those two were judged gave me a feeling of eaxm.
All I heard the entire video is that the Third Hokage did REALLY dirty by Might Dai. Like, "the Kage can promote anyone to Chuunin whenever they want..." Did Dai Dirty.
Even sai does state that the promotions in the Root was completely different process. There are probably different routes to become a shinobi other the academy but is basically equivalent to real world advanced academic placement
Technically there’s a Jonin Exam but it’s a mix of completing missions as a chunin, getting recommendation from an actual Jonin (most likely your squad captain) and passing writen exams to test out your knowledge. During the third war era some chunins were promoted based on their performance on the battlefield and recommandation by their captain alone no exam needed since Konoha needed more Jonin fast cause they were losing them fast.
Apprently there is a jonin exam similar to the chunin exam criteria. But we never see in anime. I think its mentioned in manga. You also qualify by completing a bunch of certain number of a,b,c,d rank missions. From what i researched online.
I always thought the chunin exams and or status shows that you've proved the ability to think and make decisions as a ninja. And the a Jounin status are those that posses exceptional skill and abilities.
The only difference between Chunnin and Jonin is that Jonin is more powerful and has more experience and should be able to handle A-rank missions on daily basis. During Chunnin exams Ibiki said that chunnin is a full-fledged ninja, chunnin is a leader of the group and his duty is to lead people, come with good strategy and make sure all of his subordiantes will make it alive. For chunnin power is not that important, important are battle inteligence and leadership - that's why Shikamaru was promoted. Jonin is just step above, they have battle inteligence and leadership but they also have more power and are able to face more difficult or more dangerous threats. Power level is only difference between chunnin and jonin, that's why i think jonin exams aren't needed because when Kage sees that you have power and you're capable of accomplish more difficult missions then you'll get promoted to Jonin.
10:49 Kakashi actually kinda trolls Naruto in that scene. When he's talking about promoting him, Kakashi says at the end, "is what I'd _like_ to say," before giving him all the study materials. It's all to imply that Naruto wasn't really promoted there.
Its one of the few times they acknowledge that he spent 3 years on a training journey and missed all the normal educational milestones along the way. (Its also kinda weird Jiraya never brought him back to the village to retake the chunin exams)
It would make sense to have a rule where someone who kills a high priority target in the bingo book gets promoted to jonin, kind of like trial by combat promotion. Similar to a padawan becoming a knight by defeating a Sith.
each level of becoming a higher form of ninja should all have some sort of test involved. Kishimoto put so much effort into becoming a chunin but they pretty much don't show much of how you become a jonin and so on. are there levels of charka you need to have or certain abilties/leadership that you need to be able to do?
Exams are not about leadership they are about actual shinobi skills. Gathering info, determination, surviving in wilds, completing a mission, and fight. Naruto failed written test first time because he didn't write anything.
@@alexzero3736 leadership/strategy are qualities they look for in higher ups like jonin. it may not be the most important but it does help them decide and not just pure skill/strength and completing a task.
The chunin exams were made by the 2nd hokage to stop inexperienced ninja from going to the battlefield and being killed like his younger brother was. I'm actually surprised at how many people seem to forget that here lol
I think it would make sense that in order to promote someone to the rank of jonin it's more of a case-by-case basis rather than doing a tournament style, whereas in you could promote someone from an entry level ninja to a journeyman level ninja with a tournament style. Whereas in being a high level, ninja would require a lot more than just a tournament to prove your skills and it's just something I guess a ninja would get overtime and if someone felt you were worthy of it, you would be promoted to that
God how I miss the rougher unkempt look of Kishimoto's earlier art style in Naruto. It honestly felt like it reflected his fantasy world of shinobi and tailed beasts in a more twisted and dangerous way. Like everyone of these people was damaged in some way given a harsh angular look was applied to their body shape, faces and even clothing. The later smoothed out and orderly look, while pleasing on the eyes just....lost something and never felt quite as lived in as the early art style did.
Why does the Jonin exam have to be a tournament arc? It seems like if you are perceived to have the necessary skills, high mission difficulty, mission completion, proficiency, and/or power level, you can be tested to see if you qualify for Jonin level. This can be done individually, or in small groups. This can be like one of many Naruto training arcs.
Shino and if Sasuke didn't leave he'd definitely be a jounin for real for real everyone else being chunnin or below makes sense but I think Naruto should have made the rank after Pain or the war
In a lot of stories, the best fighters, sorcerers, ninjas, whatever they’re called usually are promoted to the top through their achievements and ability rather than a test. For example, in Star Wars, I know to become a master, you have to basically be chosen by the Jedi council to be promoted.
Chunins to Jonins are like adult leveled Ninja with all the skills they need to survive The purpose of the Chunin Exam is like a coming of age ceremony which Genins, which had basic training in their 3-men squads have a chance to prove the skills they learned in their tenure After the Exams and if Ninia promoted, it’s like being graduated and they’re recongized as full ninja Chunins are like intermediate Ninja that graduated from being Genin and have choice to go further as Jonin, which are the elite Ninja It’s more of a requirement for Genin to take exams in order to become Chunin, as they’re to prove they have the skills to graduate from it, but once they’re promoted, it’s less of one route to Jonin, as to become Jonin one must be recommended for their performance by enough villagers abd approved by the Kage, not unlike how a Kage is elected as well although without needing the Feudual Lords approval
Where did you get the number that 9 are formed each 6 months? In the anime they say naruto was the only student not to graduate to genin. And Sasuke's report card in the manga showed there were 90 students in his class. It's also not unreasonable to assume that there are multiple academies training students.
In universe, something like that would probably be an internal matter. The village leader and a hand full of specialists and or trusted voices giving a hand full of tasks to at most a few people they're on the fence about promoting. No elimination process or real risk of career ending injury. Just a pass fail on whether the prospect does indeed have the traits the military head was concerned about. Could even be disguised as a regular thing like a physical. The characters could be receiving secret jonin tests every few months to a year with their doctors visits, and when they pass the tests within the tests, they get a tap on the shoulder, a new flack jacket, and a briefing on their new obligations.
Always thought of the bell test as the Jounin test. If you can take a bell from a Jounin you can take: info, any weapon, any scroll from said Jounin. Otherwise why would Tsunade be watching Naruto and Sakuras bell test personally? I always thought it was a clever way of showing the test and have a lot of people not notice.
Even though this is from the Filler Hell of OG Naruto Season 4, the topic was touched upon in the 3 or 4 episodes that had Iruka & Mizuki as a main focus.
In the military (navy to be specific) the first couple of ranks auto promotion when you are that rank long enough then it's a combination of testing and evaluation on the job and last is just a board of high ranks looking at your evaluation and achievement to see if you can be one of them. So Naruto system works in that's aspect where school leads to genin testing leads to chinin and evaluation and achievement leads to jonein. Like itachi some military folks make it upe the rank very very fast in a short time so age does not matter
Having a bunch of near Joning level ninjas inside of an enemy's village is a perfect way to break havoc. Becoming a Chuuning is like graduating from middle school, you can have chuunins on missions that will never threaten their lives, so you can have plenty of depth in Chuunin ninjas, even more than Genin and Jonin level ninjas. Doing exams for high skilled Chunnin level ninjas would be like risky for less prepared chuunin, the Chuunin exams were very risky already, imagine Jonin exams... That would be hardcore.
Well, in universe, the reason the chunin exams have an initial tournament, was because too many genin passed the forest of death test. Otherwise, they would have gone straight to the last tournament. So, given the fact that only about 8-10 genin were expected to pass, a theoretical jonin exam could be carried out with, lets say, the 10 current strongest chuning on the village. Alternitively, maybe completing a certain amount of S rank mission, lets say, 10, could also be a way to consider somebody a jonin. Regarding pacing, I could see a very quick Jonin tournament arc been done, right before Pain attacks, as a way for preparing the village for further Akatsuki attacks, after Azuma's death.
if i were a kage i would do a test , select a strong jonin to-be the evaluator (also to make sure the jonin to-be doesn't die) the mission hunt down a strong B rank or a weak A rank rogue ninja. this tests their ,information gathering skills, their stealth/secrecy (they have to make sure the target doesn't realize they are being tracked) and then their assassination/fighting skills.the evaluator can intervene at any point if they think the person taking the test doesn't have the skills necessary . based on the results of the test they can also make suggestions for example "they have no talent for fighting but they are great at acquiring and managing information". also the evaluator can intervene to take down the target if its scaping or if the target and the jonin to-be have similar strenght
One point that wasn't raised is that a full on battle between jounin candidates could even be dangerous to spectators and the surrounding area. They're likely to have some pretty destructive jutsus, and think about if summons get involved too. One could also argue that 1-on-1 fights isn't the best way to select jounin anyway. It makes sense for chuunin because unlike genin they are expected to hold their own on the battle field without supervision, so they have to prove that they can. Presumably a chuunin eligible to become a jounin has already proven their combat ability in actual missions.
I was always under the impression that it was like the games. You fulfill a certain number of high level missions and you can be promoted. The Chunin exams are just for promising Ninja who was to expedite the process in a show of strength and good will between the villages (like a child Olympics)
I honestly think it makes sense that there is only a chunin exam and no jonin exam, the chunin exam feels more like a closing of your training to become a ninja. The chunin exam is probably to certify that you are a certified, real ninja, while genins feels more like still in training, but on the field this time and if you have the potential, you get to try the exam. After that, it's up to you to prove yourself and the higher rankings are aquired trough merit ands feats
Prior to finishing this video my opinion was the genin are privates chunin are field Sargents(squad leaders) and jonin are officer ranks and kage are like 4 star generals
The chuunin exams were for the public. They were mediated and monitored by jounin if genin get out of hand. Who's going to monitor Jounin... hokage? No nation wants to reveal jounin abilities
I also think it is said that in order to go Jonin, you have to be able to add a chakra nature to Justus or manipulate chakra in some other high level way. I think Kakashi might have said something about it one time.
I originally assumed it was based on merit/recommendation, since that was how Neji was promoted in the chunin exam filler arc. But Kakashi forced Naruto to study before the latter could become Jounin, so maybe there's a written exam as well?
I was always under the impression that jonins were distinguished ninjas of high skill and you cannot promote a chunin based on some test. Such a title can only be earned through exceptional performance on real high stakes missions.
Jonin rank is earned from a good mission resume. I’m sure a chub in that has proven themselves and done many high lv missions become Jonin

Maybe Danzo got to them.
fr where are they

I always figured Jonin was based on skills and accomplishments. I figured it was not just combat based. You could be a sensor, a healer, a sabator, or a highly specialized ninja, not just a combat based ninja.
You know what I think. A good idea for a Jonin exam would be to tie it in with the chunin exam, specifically the forest of death portion. It would pair up a genin squad with a random chunin from their village to complete the task. It would test the leadership skills necessary for a jonin and the adaptability skills of genin necessary for a chunin. I would thin that would be pretty interesting.
I really like this idea.
Nah.
To add to your comment: I think a jonin exam would also endanger the candidates because they have more important tasks.
A jonin level threat was essentially a nuke.

Neji being a jonin is such a joke... Where's his own team then?
did he ever lead a mission himself?
@@alexzero3736 when you’re a jonin you don’t have to have a squad. There are other jonin such as choza, shikaku, ebiki, etc who are jonin without a squad.
@@alexzero3736 You really think Neji never lead a mission during the time skip?
Not all jounins become teachers to a group of genins.
@@alexzero3736 there's a reason why team 7 calls kakashi "sensei" it literally means teacher. in order to teach a group of genin you need to be a jonin, but not all jonins are gonna teach a group of genin. anko doesn't have her own team and she's still a very skilled jonin, whether or not you lead a team of kids doesn't determine if you're a jonin or not
Well Naruto is still a genin as of Boruto
I believe Jonins are promoted based on the high level missions they complete. Such as S and A rank missions.
That’s what I thought. Jonin is more about talent and reputation, Chuunin is more about being able to lead or solo missions
Honestly it’s probably just that if you’re ready to be jounin, the kage/elders know who you are and will promote you. Like a corporate promotion - early levels are more standardized, but high levels come down to reputation and contacts
Yup and they typically also need to be very very good leaders and we all know that Naruto is shit at leading/teaching 😂
Field promotions basically
I can't remember what episode it was but it was mentioned haphazardly that the kage has the power to promote a ninja to jonin rank as long as they're. accomplished enough
Also, winning the chunin exam tourney does not necessarily equate to being the only way to get promoted to chunin.
Channel finally starts to get the attention it deserves. Keep grinding & growing
A jounin exam would be like the Kakashi vs. Guy battles. All the most powerful ninja in the verse would get together and play mini games.
Cuz by the time he died he had basically disappeared from the story and become fodder.
tbf neji was already jonin
@@aidenbrand7373 you're right but that's far from the point
Disagree. Would've wasted time. HOWEVER, we definitely could've made room for side characters to show their growth in other ways. Have one team per arc similar to Shikamaru's team in the Hidan and Kakuzu arc.
@@Shark-hn4mv lol, more of a waste of time then the war arc? OK
It could have been better filler than some of the rest.
I do have to ask where the community sits with Ninja Ostrich? Given anime communities, it's either a 'god tier' filler character or the worst thing to happen to filler. There is no in between.
Yeah my head canon is that they get promoted based on accomplishments
Like even excluding characters like Kakashi, characters like Asuma completed hundreds of missions a good chunk of those being A and S ranks
So I think once you've reached a certain level like maybe 6 A ranks and a S rank you might have to be promoted as it just proves how strong and reliable you are
With Naruto he never officially got the chunin promotion so his maturity intelligence and knowledge was always a question mark because based on his accomplishments beating Kakuzu by itself could have earned him jonin imo
Plus I forget if it was just an anime scene but Temari told Shikamaru to go for Jonin at the start of Shippuden so there might be another element like a request or something

The tournament arcs were also masterfully used as benchmarks.

"And it was a very successful arc that everyone loves!"
Orochimaru: "Am I a joke to you!?"
If there is an exam I think it would be a simple test to see if they are capable. Not a tournament but perhaps a test like a high ranking proxy mission
The out of universe exam is literally, "we met the tournament quota."

I have always settled for the idea that these exams happen offscreen. Great video man, I chuckle every time a but pops on screen haha
CEO of making ur essay longer
they still could have made a jonin exams micro-arc after the whole kaguya thing, just to serve as a sort of "everything coming full circle" thing.
One thing I wondered, did Kakashi sign his team up for the Chuunin exams because he really thought they had a shot at passing, or more because he thought it would be a good learning experience?
Probably both
I think both.
Pretty sure Kakashi knew the chunin exams were gonna be a piece of cake for them
Naruto could compete with low-level jounin. At the beginning of series.
Yes.
I feel like if they pit jonin against each other it would likely end with someone or both dying or injured to the point they can't fight anymore
Exactly two people who are jounin level would absolutely destroy each other
Like rock lee and garaa?
@@chrisblanc663 exactly. Nah, they'd be absolutely bloodlusted. Someone would get hurt more than Lee did, no cap
I remember when Minato casually put Kakashi on the anbu rank, and then the 3rd hokage offered him the position of jounin to improve his mental health.
Jounin exams would be like attending an exam to get a promotion at work
All I heard the entire video is that the Third Hokage did REALLY dirty by Might Dai.
Like, "the Kage can promote anyone to Chuunin whenever they want..."
Did Dai Dirty.
Off topic, but is the background music from Ragnarok Online? Noticed around 2:20
I always thought the chunin exams and or status shows that you've proved the ability to think and make decisions as a ninja. And the a Jounin status are those that posses exceptional skill and abilities.
The Jonin Exams wound be a written test only
The only difference between Chunnin and Jonin is that Jonin is more powerful and has more experience and should be able to handle A-rank missions on daily basis.

@@jacobjensen7118 guess there are alot here who probably forgot or didnt get to that part of the story.
Who's a character that should have been a Jonin?
that pig from tsunade
Shino and if Sasuke didn't leave he'd definitely be a jounin for real for real everyone else being chunnin or below makes sense but I think Naruto should have made the rank after Pain or the war
Naruto, especially since Kakashi said he was going to get Naruto out of Chunin.
But... Boruto just completely fucking forgot about that.
In a lot of stories, the best fighters, sorcerers, ninjas, whatever they’re called usually are promoted to the top through their achievements and ability rather than a test. For example, in Star Wars, I know to become a master, you have to basically be chosen by the Jedi council to be promoted.

That guy with the katana who held Madara for 3 seconds is a jonin, i bet

Chunins to Jonins are like adult leveled Ninja with all the skills they need to survive
The purpose of the Chunin Exam is like a coming of age ceremony which Genins, which had basic training in their 3-men squads have a chance to prove the skills they learned in their tenure
After the Exams and if Ninia promoted, it’s like being graduated and they’re recongized as full ninja
Chunins are like intermediate Ninja that graduated from being Genin and have choice to go further as Jonin, which are the elite Ninja
It’s more of a requirement for Genin to take exams in order to become Chunin, as they’re to prove they have the skills to graduate from it, but once they’re promoted, it’s less of one route to Jonin, as to become Jonin one must be recommended for their performance by enough villagers abd approved by the Kage, not unlike how a Kage is elected as well although without needing the Feudual Lords approval
Great video man!
Where did you get the number that 9 are formed each 6 months? In the anime they say naruto was the only student not to graduate to genin. And Sasuke's report card in the manga showed there were 90 students in his class. It's also not unreasonable to assume that there are multiple academies training students.
Nice video
Love the Ragnarok Online background music
Like itachi some military folks make it upe the rank very very fast in a short time so age does not matter
its hillarious how the subtitles always find an other word Jonin ;)
World Trigger exist, is really popular and half of the whole story centers around big tournament
if i were a kage i would do a test , select a strong jonin to-be the evaluator (also to make sure the jonin to-be doesn't die) the mission hunt down a strong B rank or a weak A rank rogue ninja. this tests their ,information gathering skills, their stealth/secrecy (they have to make sure the target doesn't realize they are being tracked) and then their assassination/fighting skills.the evaluator can intervene at any point if they think the person taking the test doesn't have the skills necessary . based on the results of the test they can also make suggestions for example "they have no talent for fighting but they are great at acquiring and managing information". also the evaluator can intervene to take down the target if its scaping or if the target and the jonin to-be have similar strenght
Probably a jonin exam would look like the bell test in reverse. You would need to keep the bells away from a Jonin squad.
When are we going to get an update from the Naruto rewrite series
I was always under the impression that it was like the games. You fulfill a certain number of high level missions and you can be promoted. The Chunin exams are just for promising Ninja who was to expedite the process in a show of strength and good will between the villages (like a child Olympics)
It was always a test to prove intelligence and loyalty to the Kage of your nation in the final exam.
10:58 he was told he would have to study to become a Jonin so I'm guessing he got distracted again or something lol
Yo my dude I'm waiting for the next part of naruto rewrite. I know you didn't hit the goal but I would love if you would continue
I really wanted to stick it out through the whole video but it’s too stressful to feel like I’m listening to someone have a stroke.
Akira Toriyama: "Did someone say... Tournament Arc?"
The Leaf Jonin are just built different!!!!
Okay I think it would be badass to see a bunch of chuning fight
I also think it is said that in order to go Jonin, you have to be able to add a chakra nature to Justus or manipulate chakra in some other high level way. I think Kakashi might have said something about it one time.
He has! Your correct but also too add on most jonin has 2 or more chakra natures
@@Melag534 yes!!!!!
It’s because someone tells the hokage to promote u to Jonin u can see it in the movie Naruto road to ninja 0:25
imagine Might Guy activating the 7th gates during the jonin exams 💀💀💀
I originally assumed it was based on merit/recommendation, since that was how Neji was promoted in the chunin exam filler arc. But Kakashi forced Naruto to study before the latter could become Jounin, so maybe there's a written exam as well?
